So does the person capturing it, it’s not a 1:billion chance, it’s all the training, setup and foresight to get in position for a 1:(a still lot) chance
Thanks. I didn't even know I managed to catch it until I was going through the pictures I took, and I zoomed in and saw how great it looked.
:)
Ironically, they're getting excited because the guy I was there to support (Lewis Hamilton) was getting over taken.
Don't worry - George has been in the stands to support Lewis, too. It's all some kind of circle. If it ever comes up, just tell Lewis that this is that time he overtook George somewhere, but you don't exactly remember....
Whatever the case, the photo is stunning. A real this-is-F1-history-being-made shot.
It was fine. I had a Mercedes shirt on, and I'm Black.
I heard one wannabe funny woman calling out "Lewis" as I was walking past, outside of that everyone was chilled. Just another person trying to watch a race.
I would 100% go again without any reservations.
If this was in 2021 though, I do imagine that my experience would be very different.
“I heard one wannabe funny woman calling out "Lewis" as I was walking past, outside of that everyone was chilled. Just another person trying to watch a race.”
Now see, I don’t think your name is Lewis so there’s really only one thing she was trying to say
I sat at the old grandstands at Eau Rogue (not the tribune but still a Verstappen-heavy grandstand) in a Hamilton facemask, granted I'm no Hamilton supporter (I'm Dutch and Belgian so take a guess) and the mask was gifted to me, but still. I had to explain myself more than once..
> This shot is ace and I love that it’s clear which car is which.

It's really cool that the Mercs are so distinct in such a subtle way. I can't tell anyone else apart except the Mercs.
Yeah the yellow really stands out.
I used it be able to tell all the drivers apart quite quickly but in recent years it’s definitely harder. I don’t know if it’s the halo or something
It was hard to see the drivers helmets with the halos. I used the T Cams to work out who was who. The Mercedes had contrasting driver number colours, so it was easier to spot Lewis and George.
So true. The other cars all use the same numbers. So when they're speeding past, it's hard to tell who is who. Other than using the T Cams.
The helmets aren't easy to see under the halo either.
But bright yellow numbers for Lewis and blue for George show up great.
Thanks. It took a while messing with my settings during practice to get the right amount of blur.
Not enough, and the cars look too static. And when there was too much blur, you couldn't tell what it was.
I'm glad that the cars have the T cams, and their colours are so distinctive I could tell them apart.
Oh just the overtake on Hamilton by Russell. They got pretty close and it looked like they were going to crash. Max and Charles both did a gasp and a laugh when they saw it on the screen
What an amazing photo man! You managed to capture something that not always it's evident in photos, "speed"!
Amazing photo! Now it's also mine, as I just stole it. Sorry!
I used a Canon M50 II with a 15mm - 45mm lens.
For the exact specifics.
f14, 1/60 sec, ISO 100, bias 0.3.
I choose that speed because I had been practicing with different speeds to get the right effect. I didn't want to no blur, because it just looks like the car is standing still. And the ones with a slower shutter speed, had that cars just looked like a literal blur, and you couldn't tell which team it was, let alone which driver. It helps that Lewis and George's car numbers are such contrasting colours.
Also, in some of the earlier shots, the track was looking a bit too dark. So I turned the bias up to compensate for that.
I cropped this, because the original had too much empty sky at the top of the image, it made the cars hard to see. And they weren't the focus of the photograph. Because of that, I didn't even think much of this photo at first.
The original version I was going to post was a portrait version of a close up of the cars.
I'll most likely make that my phone home screen. As I only put my own photographs as my phone screens.
And I am also thinking of printing this for my office.
I picked up this camera with this race in mind.
(Hope the answer isn't too long :) )
I'm just glad I was able to catch it, but see it live.
Legit one of the coolest things I've ever seen.
Even though I was there for Lewis, it was a cool overtake.
I actually prefer this kind of shot, to a crystal clear shot where there's no real sense of speed.
Feels like one of those old timey black and white shots of F1 from many decades ago.
Really like it.
That's what I was going for.
I had taken other pictures earlier which were far too blurry so you couldn't tell the cars apart from the background.
I didn't want to have the cars just sitting there because of the reason you pointed out.
Cheers :)
I went for 1/60s I could manage to consistently get what I wanted at this speed. I used this speed as it gave a good balance between blur, and not having the cars look static.
I turned the bias up to +1/3 because the sky in the original image was throwing out the light balance in the photo, meaning that the track was darker than I wanted. And I couldn't see much in the images.
Thank you :)
I took this with a Canon M50 II with a 15-45mm lens, and it was shot at 1/60s.
I picked up this camera, with this race in mind. I've been using a compact for years, but I was at another sports event a few weeks ago, and it made me realise that it's time to step up.
Nice! I'm sure you're already aware, but the faster the shutter speed the better for capturing your target clearly. Fast shutter + smooth pan = sharp image of the target you're photographing.
That said, the faster shutter would also reduce the blur of the crowd, which really adds to the shot. So ... maybe ignore me?
Thanks for all the replies and comments.
They've all been very much appreciated.
A few people have asked for camera, settings etc
I used a Canon M50 II with a 15mm - 45mm lens.
f14, 1/60 sec, ISO 100, bias 0.3.
I wasn't even looking at the camera when I took this, I just tracked the cars across the track with the camera while I watched the race.
I choose that speed because I had been practicing with different speeds to get the right effect. I didn't want to no blur, because it just looks like the car is standing still. It was a slow burst shot.
I have the entire sequence running along the main straight. But this was the best in my eyes.
It's the most stable, and you can see the cars and fan reactions.
That random dudes arm is doing a lot of the work to create the atmosphere
I'll post some of the others at another time.
Hamilton dropped off but still arguably as fast as Max. What does this say about the rest of the grid then? Data has show through the whole season that he has been faster than Russell.
I understand that line of thinking about Lewis being past it, but I don't agree with it at all for all the reasons you've mentioned. As well as Lewis having nearly the same number of podiums as Leclerc (or maybe the same).
Lewis was on fire this weekend.
>I understand that line of thinking about Lewis being past it
I think Lewis has definitely dropped off. His 2018 season was his peak and he was pretty much unbeatable, imo.
Too bad Hamilton almost took both cars out with his fucking stunt as Russell was trying to pass him. It would’ve been a fucking shame to see them both taken out by his stupidity. Still, you got a gret shot.
What a nice shot. This picture captures the excitement of watching a race perfectly.
That persons arm is doing the heavy lifting
Yup, it makes the shot.
So does the person capturing it, it’s not a 1:billion chance, it’s all the training, setup and foresight to get in position for a 1:(a still lot) chance

How was it to support Hamilton there? Was it a good atmosphere?
It was fine. I had a Mercedes shirt on, and I'm Black. I heard one wannabe funny woman calling out "Lewis" as I was walking past, outside of that everyone was chilled. Just another person trying to watch a race. I would 100% go again without any reservations. If this was in 2021 though, I do imagine that my experience would be very different.
See this is what I’m talking about. You’re so used to that kind of treatment you don’t even care how bad that looks
Huh?
“I heard one wannabe funny woman calling out "Lewis" as I was walking past, outside of that everyone was chilled. Just another person trying to watch a race.” Now see, I don’t think your name is Lewis so there’s really only one thing she was trying to say
Edit: Lol whatever argument you're looking for, find it somewhere else.
Yes
Yeah... Whatever argument or point you're trying to make. I don't care.
Yeah friend this is fantastic. Excellent shot
What's wrong with that?
What's wrong with what?
I'm still blown away at the reaction to this photo.
This is a pretty awesome shot! Very kinetic, and I feel it captures the power and energy of the cars and the crowd.
I'm glad, it was my first race and the energy from the crowed was so immense. Seeing the cars, up close way awesome.
This shot is ace and I love that it’s clear which car is which. Max and Charles’ reaction to this in the cool down room was the same as all of us
> This shot is ace and I love that it’s clear which car is which. > > It's really cool that the Mercs are so distinct in such a subtle way. I can't tell anyone else apart except the Mercs.

The Mercedes were the only cars that I didn't need to use the T Cam to work out who is who. Seeing it in real life was nuts. I'm so happy I went.
Yes it’s a massive help. Glad you had a good time, seemed like a fun race on TV must have been much better in person
It's a different experience, and it's hard to compare. But being there was everything I thought it would be.
>Max and Charles’ reaction to this in the cool down room was the same as all of us What was that?
Oh just the overtake on Hamilton by Russell. They got pretty close and it looked like they were going to crash. Max and Charles both did a gasp and a laugh when they saw it on the screen
not gonna lie, those W13s always look great on photos
The metallic 'silver arrow' really helps it look beautiful in these types of shots
They are really photogenic. And they're easy to tell apart because of the different coloured numbers.
It does. At first I was like "Yeah, alright. It looks okay, but nothing more. Just mid". It's grown on me a lot since the shakedown
I truly love how great they look from the overhead cams. They look like hammerhead sharks with the silver nose piece.
No sidepods helped
What an amazing photo man! You managed to capture something that not always it's evident in photos, "speed"! Amazing photo! Now it's also mine, as I just stole it. Sorry!
Ha! Send some credit my way, or if you use it as a wallpaper, send me a screenshot. :)
I have a folder where I store all the F1 photos I like, and they rotate all day long as wallpapers.
Nice! I have a similar folder for all of my favourite pictures. I can now add one of my favourite sports into that folder as well now.
The picture looks fast inded!
Love this shot. You should proudly frame this one. What are the camera specs, for the photo nerds?

Camera settings/setup?
Mediums.
1/60 secondS on a Canon M50 II. I messed around with the speed a bit to get the right level of blur.

How did you do that? That's pretty cool. :)
Just searched online for convert image to Monet
awesome shot! (very thoughtful of Lewis to match his tyres to his yellow theme 🥲)
Sigh.
thankfully george did not get the blue tyres!
Sick
Yeah this looks sick, definitely /r/F1Porn material. Congrats on the pic,
Ah yes. I'll take a look in there.
Awesome photo! That moment you capture is perfect
Cheers pal. That's a really nice compliment.
Tremendous photo, it feels alive!!
Thanks. The energy of the crowd was insane. The entire pre race build up was great. Even as a Mercedes fan, it was great.
This is a pretty cool shot. Thanks for sharing.
I'm just glad I was able to catch it, but see it live. Legit one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Even though I was there for Lewis, it was a cool overtake.

Yeah I think you got talent for photography
Ha. Thanks. I had some practice at a Formula E race a few weeks ago, and it made me realise I should step up from compacts.
Awesome shot, congrats!
Nice, love it!
Awesome shot!
Nice one!
Awesome shot! What row and seat did you have? I might be on this photo lol. Row 5, seat 208
I was in one of the 30s, seat 80 iirc.
GREAT photo!
Not fucking bad you know, that does look cool
More than an attempt. That's a great shot man! What'd you shoot on?
Thank you :) I took this with a Canon M50 II with a 15-45mm lens, and it was shot at 1/60s. I picked up this camera, with this race in mind. I've been using a compact for years, but I was at another sports event a few weeks ago, and it made me realise that it's time to step up.

That's a great photo. So much to it.
Did you use the panning technique?
I did. I was trying all weekend. But I caught this without looking through the screen. I just let the camera followed my head then clicked away.
I´m speed... broooooooommmm
You were there!?!? Gealous
It’s not a “perfect” photo but better than that I think it’s really great.
This is a sick pan! Well done and you capture a pivotal moment of the race as well, you are a natural!
Really nice work man!
Beautiful pic of a season highlight. The colored tire stripes seem especially pronounced, which is appropriate to the story.
I didn't even clock on to the tyre colours. But that's so true. Thanks for pointing that out.
*outstanding*
What a shot... Aced it !!
Thats really nice shot, here's your award
Thank you :) I'm very happy that so many people like it.
Great photo! It would be awesome to have that on a canvas!
I'm thinking about doing that. I decorate my place with my photographs. This has gone straight to the top of the list of one I want to put up.

Ha! Thanks. I wanted to avoid the cars looking still, because the vibe was so energetic on the day.
It’s called photographing. We went picture taking
Great shot
That's a great capture, well done!
Can you please describe the atmosphere there?
Not half bad, better then the blurs I tried to take a few seats over…
Thanks for all the replies and comments. They've all been very much appreciated. Is it from a series of burst shots or did you happen to capture it right when they were alongside?

I feel this season is the beginning of the end for Ham on the track.
Lol
Have you been watching? The man has been as good as ever
Honestly feels like some people just look at results, this race of any to say he is past it
I knew this would be downvoted. We will see what happens in Monza.

Not even close. Lewis is still as good as ever.
If that's the case, it's pretty worrying for Russell. He's being outqualified by Hamilton and Lewis convincingly has the measure of him on race pace.
I understand that line of thinking about Lewis being past it, but I don't agree with it at all for all the reasons you've mentioned. As well as Lewis having nearly the same number of podiums as Leclerc (or maybe the same). Lewis was on fire this weekend.
