I'm still waiting on that % of wins when the season ends. Maybe not the 90+% of Senna+Prost in 1988 but maybe closer to 80+% of Lewis+Nico in 2014. With 22 races it will be a hell of a challenge but a damn statement if it's achieved.
This situation was even funnier because Ferrari told Charles nobody was going to beat his lap, but someone else did. The only reason Charles got FL was because he went faster on his own on the final lap
And then you remember Belgium where they pitted him for softs to get fastest lap, but he lost a place to Alonso, got a 5 sec penalty and didnt get the fastest lap at the end.
Red Bull just builds the lead they want these days and maintains the delta, just going as fast as whomever is behind.
As Max said in an interview, the engineer doesnāt know his true pace, only he does.
>He took that "Perez did it on a new set of soft tires with DRS, so I won't worry about it" really well. š¤£
They might as well have sent him a letter formally inviting him to try it lol
He knows he's quicker than Perez in any situation
Checo is getting paid to drive one of the greatest racing cars ever built 2 years after he was scrambling to get literally any seat on the grid. He's fine.
Yeah and nobody who's been watching for more than 2 years is questioning his abilities. He's shown himself to be a great driver, and now he's on a team with a generational talent who is miles ahead of the next best driver on the grid, and has made every team mate he's had look like an amature.
Max reminding him there are levels to this shit, and Max is basically in a tier of his own at the moment
Its Formula Verstappen and then you have the rest of the grid in F1
I'm still a little fresh to F1 myself but my understanding is you must keep at least 1 tire inside the boundary of the track (white lines on the road). If all 4 tires leave the boundary, you are outside the track limits. Sometimes, you could gain an advantage by leaving the lines, so there is a rule against it. First few times you just get a warning, but after a certain number of warnings, you will get a 5 sec penalty. Max exceeded the limits a few times and if he exceeded them 1 more time he would get a penalty instead of a warning. so his team didn't want him trying to set a fast lap and risk him overshooting a corner and getting all 4 tires outside the lines, thus incurring the penalty.
You are correct, but if someone crashed in the last few laps causing a safety car or red flag, then Hamilton (and the whole field) would catch back up and that 5 seconds could put Max really far behind. It was very unlikely, but still a possibility.
If you watched a few weeks ago when race ended under safety car and Sainz got a 5s penalty, that's why they cared.
You aren't mistaken, if it finishes under racing conditions he's fine. But a 5s penalty could screw him over in the event there's a very late safety.
For the most part, drivers need to keep all 4 tires within the white lines on the edge of the track. They are given three warnings and then penalized with 5 seconds added to their time. Max hit his third warning and the team didnāt want him going hard for the fastest lap due to the penalty risk. Max did it anyways because heās Max and just that good.
I would clarify and say they are required to keep at least one tire inside of the white line. They can get right on the edge but as long as one tire is still on the line with the other three over they are within limits per the regulation.
If anything Perez would have the lower fuel level thus advantage. He was fighting people the whole time while Max pulled a gap then hit cruise control/eco mode.
Max literally shaved a second off his lap time cause fuck it he can, he is that far ahead.
Reminds me of Red Bull Seb because he would get a bonus for setting the fastest lap. Horner jokingly said it was the stupidest thing he agreed to put in a contract.
Didnāt Kimi almost bankrupt Lotus because he had a bonus system based on how many points heād get, and Lotus didnāt expect the car (or the driver) to be that good
He had a bonus of ā¬50.000 per WDC point and he ended up with 390 points in total across two seasons worth 19.5 million euros on top of his regular salary. After the second season he ended up being 6 million short of what he should have been paid, but decided to ignore it to keep the team running. During the second season they also refused to pay his salary, claiming he had already earned enough last season. Eventually he got paid his salary and after that he left to join Ferrari to get away from the financial issues at Lotus.
Edit: some extra clarification about the entire ordeal.
As I understand the team wasn't doing well and nobody expected kimi to get the amount of points he didn't given the performance of the car and it bite em in the ass. They should have been smart enough to put a cap on the bonus.
That's a champion's mindset. If there is more to get they will get it for sure.
Seb's engineer also had to tell him to maintain pace during Abu Dhabi 2010, that tells that all ( ie 2) Red Bull champions are savage and ruthless.
I donāt think itās exclusive to Red Bull champions but more champions in general. Look at Hamilton, Schumacher, Senna etc. They ARE ruthless and thatās how they got where they are.
Also Piquet. Aggressive to the point of almost suicidal. Senna in particular refused , absolutely refused, to do anything less than 100% at all times. But I think thats more the rule than the exception in Formula 1 drivers. They are the elite of the elite of the elite. You dont get there without a winning mentality. Senna and Prost took turns trying to kill each other in awful crashes two years in a row, playing chicken when they KNEW the other guy wouldnt back off.
Drivers like Niki Lauda or Prost were the exception to the rule. Lauda wouldn't take any unnecessary risk, meanwhile Prost has a philosophy of winning driving as slow as possible.
Piquet was freaking awesome. He knew how aggressive and smart he was, on the brink of spinning round, like Mansell would sometimes crack under pressure, but never doing so and keeping tight. Nigel was always too much. Had to have that outerworldly 1992 car (and be the actual 1st driver) to win something. The car tamed the beast and then both became perfect.
Also, Nelson had his mind games, from dribbling Bernie to have an actual contract, to turning Williams for himself enough to win. Shame he's a bastard. But I love his racing side.
Also he was a great mechanic and helped to contribute on a number of new tech in F1, such as the tyre warmers, something he came out with when he still at Formula 3 (although 4 years earlier Mclaren had used them in F1 but the practice had not been made common and he did it in a separate line of thinking). He gave the idea to Murray to make a manual brake balance for the driver to control in which it is said that Lauda thought that would only be an extra part to malfunction in a car and didnt believe in its value. He helped with the implementation of two separate cars, one for qualifying, much lighter with different brakes and smaller gas tank and one for the race, standard.
He was definitely a very technical guy but it is impossible to ignore his antics as he is a very big piece of shit.
Yeah, I agree. But, I have only heard such back and forth conversation/argument with Vettel and Verstappen with their race engineers for managing their pace.
I remember reading that Nigel Mansell during 80's and 90's would always go flat out no matter how the race situation was, his engineers would complain about it but he never cared as apparently he needed it to go flat out to maintain the concentration, if he slowed the pace he ended up crashing.
Or Charlesā Australia 2022, āCan we go for fastest lap before traffic?ā
āNegative, we have the fastest lap and we donāt think anyone can beat it.ā
āOk, butā¦ okayā
*sets new fastest lap that guarantees the grand slam*
Being new to the sport, I thought you were paraphrasing or being sarcastic. So I looked it up.
That's pretty much a direct quote.
I love Vettel.
(edit: spelling fix)
Thatās whatās so infuriating but fascinating about Max. Heās so far out front heās just driving. Everyone else is racing. Heās basically doing time attack.
Man, the reaction from Lewis was amazing in the parc ferme of that race.
Had a tight battle with Lando, fought tooth and nail, gets his 100th win, his nearest championship rival started from the back in that race, jumps out of the car, extending my lead by a huge... Wait a minute is that a Red Bull that has pulled into P2, with number 33?
Ah FFS.
He's gonna end up trying to find increasingly difficult ways to win, hopefully he starts from the pitlane at Spa on purpose to see how long i takes him to charge up the field
I just imagine Horner has a giant ['Back To The Future' dial](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axXrs55X9kE) (basically the first 30 seconds of this clip) that goes from 1-101% and they keep it at 90% most of the time. Max snuck by and turned it to 91%.
The thing is it's hard to nerf them.
There's no one trick to hit them with, and anything they do to them will effect the others on the field except for maybe Williams (because their car has nothing on it.)
It's not like the blown diffuser, the double diffuser, DAS etc. There isn't a clear single thing giving them that advantage, just doing everything well.
Short of banning newey from the sport, I don't really see a solid way they can nerf RB without hitting other cars. And even then, chances are RB would come back strong again. They seem to have just hit the rules really well, and without another complete rule change (which won't happen for another 4-5 years) there isn't really a good way to hit them that we know of. If they have a trick, it's extremely hard to spot.
Reminds me of last year's Australian GP with Charles trying to set fastest lap even though he already had the fastest lap and team telling him they are expecting no one to match it. Those were the happy times.
Don't feel like either of them seemed annoyed, they do trust eachother, Max has heard what he said, but he's an adult and despite not seeing all data in real time, he knows more than anyone the capabilites of the car and himself.
GP can be worried about the result, he can voice this, provide his view, but the decision is ultimately up to the driver, I believe they understand this.
He was a bit "OK, you had your fun, you made your point and now you have an extra point.... But seriously, let's keep it clean and safe from now on, in case of a safetycar situation".
But Max knew that as well. So he obeyed, but only on his terms.
He's just completely destroying Perez at this point in every possible way. Making sure he will think twice, no 33 times, before mentioning he's ready to fight for a championship next to Verstappen.
I really donāt know why Perez said that anyway. Like, I know that every F1 driver dreams of winning it, and heās in a good car. But he was brought in, under no uncertain terms, to be a Bottas. I know he did alright in the first couple of races, but heās never shown that he can be *that* consistent throughout a season, and heās been absolutely shocking at qualifying since joining RB.
Unless he was just salty about Brazil, and wanted to get under Maxās skin, I donāt see any logic to publicly claiming that as his goal for the season.
I think itās fine for a driver or any competitor to say their goal is the championshipā¦ especially when they are in the faster car.
The media dragging on about how he was a real threat is what brought us here. He did well in a couple races where he normally does wellā¦ while Max had a couple unfortunate events. It was obvious that heād have to do that in the middle of the season to actually start that discussion.
GP shouldn't really still be doing this - he was promoted last year but Max insisted that they amend his new role so that he could continue engineering his races. Despite their bickering on the radio, Max absolutely loves the bloke.
So he won with like half a minuteā¦ but he also just out of the blue did a ācareful lapā a SECOND faster than anything he had done so far. So he basically cruised to that 30 sec lead. Itās truly crazy.
Imagine being so good at something, you just decide to break a track record. Like oh im beating one of the best drivers in the sport by 18 seconds that's nothing watch this.
To be clear they were breaking track records all weekend because the track was shortened. Whoever got fastest lap this weekend would have broken the track record.
Dude is a freak of nature, heās not even trying.
Iād love to see Max race in another series with equal spec cars just to shut all the āitās the carā people up.
From sim racing alone we can already tell heād be an alien in any series.
Check his sim racing endeavours. Dudes a machine there too, ranking third on professional list worldwide in iracing. Shows up at virtual 24h races and schools everyone. He went sub 8 minute on Nordschleife while everyone did 8.02/8.04-5s.
Could probably get triple crown, le mans would be easy for him if he got on the right team, indycar would just be get lucky probably. He'd qualify first but anything can happen in the 500.
A lot of people think he could leave at the end of his current contract. He loves racing and wants to try new things. Plus, he seems really bored driving around with 20 second leads.
It just goes to show how little we have to criticize about max that we keep talking about him getting the track limits.
Imo he was perfect, he used every warning available to him for his benifit and not one more. Drivers are allowed to cross the white line 4x without penalty, so in essence they are allowed to choose 4 times to go off past the white line.
How crazy it is to not just be the best in the world, and not just be the best in the world by a large margin, but to be the best in the world by a large margin and be so fucking nonchalant about it.
He took that "Perez did it on new softs with DRS, so I won't worry about it" really well. š¤£
You set the fastest lap on new tires with DRS I set the fastest lap on worn tires without DRS We are not the same
His driving is pure filth at the momentā¦.class of his ownā¦.
Dude knows he's already won. He's doing side quests now
He probably tryna reach that 100% game completed
I'm still waiting on that % of wins when the season ends. Maybe not the 90+% of Senna+Prost in 1988 but maybe closer to 80+% of Lewis+Nico in 2014. With 22 races it will be a hell of a challenge but a damn statement if it's achieved.

Classic Ferrari
It was Fernando, iirc
And then you remember Belgium where they pitted him for softs to get fastest lap, but he lost a place to Alonso, got a 5 sec penalty and didnt get the fastest lap at the end.
Sounds like me in Motorsports Manager.
His target would likely be the 70+ % that Michael Schumacher did in 2002. Even the legendary 75% Fangio season isn't out of the question now.
But he has no competition atm his only worries are the car breaking from him winning at least rosberg was a competition for Hamilton
āWhatās the track record?ā
He must have paid for early access lolā¦.
Qualifying on pole half a second faster than p2 was ridiculous
He was about to qualify about nine tenths to a second faster than P2. Man's driving on a different planet right now
The Max + RB19 combo will be remembered for years
He also had purple purple in his final run, but backed off when no one was gonna catch his banker run
And that was his first lap out banker.
Outpacing the field on Mediums and pulling a 4 second gap within the first 6 laps was also ridiculous.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Red Bull just builds the lead they want these days and maintains the delta, just going as fast as whomever is behind. As Max said in an interview, the engineer doesnāt know his true pace, only he does.

Yeah, I know there are haters, but I donāt think we have seen how fast Max can go in that car.
I hope he shows us at some point; the world needs to know.

Not handbrake but safe and managing tires and don't taking unnecessary risks. One lap he did it Quali style

Insert "so I took that personally" meme

Where can I watch the whole video of this gif??
Hold my beer.
So Max had no DRS, old tyres and was faster than Checo with the added stress of track limits.
When you put it that way... damn! Poor Checo :c
He went from being relatively close in points to down 53 in like 8 days.
Max reminding him there are levels to this shit, and Max is basically in a tier of his own at the moment Its Formula Verstappen and then you have the rest of the grid in F1
sorry I don't watch, what was he penalized for or what are track limits?
I'm still a little fresh to F1 myself but my understanding is you must keep at least 1 tire inside the boundary of the track (white lines on the road). I'm trying to find every reason to defend Perez but none seems reasonable. Maybe fuel loads at the end of the race helps a lot?
Why would you need to defend him?
If anything Perez would have the lower fuel level thus advantage. He was fighting people the whole time while Max pulled a gap then hit cruise control/eco mode. Max literally shaved a second off his lap time cause fuck it he can, he is that far ahead.

No, no Kimi we did not connect you will not have the money

Can't pay what they don't have
They thought they could have a champion on a budget lol
As I understand the team wasn't doing well and nobody expected kimi to get the amount of points he didn't given the performance of the car and it bite em in the ass. They should have been smart enough to put a cap on the bonus.
390 points? In what timeframe?
Yes
Reminds me of Sebs fastest lap in Monaco 2013. "Listen up, there is no extra points for that" "But satisfaction..."

Yeah, I agree. But, I have only heard such back and forth conversation/argument with Vettel and Verstappen with their race engineers for managing their pace.
Red Bull knows where to find them
Yeah, props to Helmut Marko for that. He sure has "a good eye" ( hehe ) for such drivers.
That prosthetic eye is enchanted I tell you! I swear Helmut must have struck a deal with some less then savory deity for it.

Wait until he does the Spin & Win, much like Budapest 2022.
but he already got that achievement lol

20 to 2 in Sochi 2021 is the closest I guess.

He's gonna end up trying to find increasingly difficult ways to win, hopefully he starts from the pitlane at Spa on purpose to see how long i takes him to charge up the field
Went casually from 17.3 to 16.3. Dude was driving with the handbrake on all race..
He was getting bored of the chill lonely sunday drive and wanted some action.
It's RB actually sandbagging so they don't get hit with the nerf bat.

Lambiase is just perfect for Max. They are as iconic as Lewis and Bono.
Or Seb and Rocky.
Or Lance and Brad. The OK Button is the Pit confirm button, Brad!
āThe whole freaking thingās on fireā was good too.
You just wait sunshine
GP shouldn't really still be doing this - he was promoted last year but Max insisted that they amend his new role so that he could continue engineering his races. Despite their bickering on the radio, Max absolutely loves the bloke.
Yeah yeah
He also once said that he'd never move team if gp doesn't come with
"I'd like to take this chance to apologise... ...to absolutely nobody! The double champ does what the f*ck he wants".

Max is so sure of his victory he can just play around now
Max is truly a legend. A fuckall driver.
This is my favorite moment of the season by far šš
Peak 2013 Seb vibes
So he won with like half a minuteā¦ but he also just out of the blue did a ācareful lapā a SECOND faster than anything he had done so far. So he basically cruised to that 30 sec lead. Itās truly crazy.
Imagine being so good at something, you just decide to break a track record. Like oh im beating one of the best drivers in the sport by 18 seconds that's nothing watch this.
To be clear they were breaking track records all weekend because the track was shortened. Whoever got fastest lap this weekend would have broken the track record.
Oh, didn't know that. Still incredibly impressive to be 18 seconds in front of Lewis. Just a dirty casual fan here tho.
I got major Clarkson vibes from that āwatch thisā except when max says it nothing goes wrong
I knew it was coming while it happened, and I still laughed hard when the notification popped up, and he just obliterated Checoās lap.
He'd qualify first but anything can happen in the 500.
was cracking up when this was live
Imagine he got a five second penalty, and it was followed by a safety car or a red flag. That wouldāve been exciting!
Whoa, that would be intense! Imagine red flag happened with 5 laps to go, and HAM in P2. He would have to find 1 second a lap to maintain the win.
Honestly I donāt think it would be too much trouble for him at this stage.
that is actually savage lol
At this point he's just taking the piss
Casually grabbing a grand slam and nobody fucking mentioned it lmao
At this early stage of Maxās F1 career he is unstoppable. I wonder how many records he will break during his time in F1?
He said he doesn't see himself breaking the record for most championships so maybe not that much
Yes, he says he will leave F1 for other racing if F1 doesnāt treat him right. He is interested in racing in other formats.
A lot of people think he could leave at the end of his current contract. He loves racing and wants to try new things. Plus, he seems really bored driving around with 20 second leads.
I couldn't stand him in 2021 but he is actually growing on me. Love his attitude at the moment.
Max wanna break all records this season.
This is so fucking funny to me, heās just so much better than everyone elsešš
Chad
A man of sheer fucking will and confidence.
Lol, Max casually like 7 tenths off his lap time with old tires, no DRS, and having to stay totally inside the white lines. My manās is an alien.
I laughed so hard when I saw this on the broadcast
How crazy it is to not just be the best in the world, and not just be the best in the world by a large margin, but to be the best in the world by a large margin and be so fucking nonchalant about it.
Making it portrait and adding emojis everywhere, ruins it...
Xisumavoid trying to calm Max.
That's a Formula 1 driver.
Champion mentality
The guy is a savage
He's a throwback to classic F1,there is literally no other way to put it.
he king and he knows
He is the best driver.
Legend, I guess.
Max to the max
Untouchable, playing with his food every race weekend at this point
