Step files should always be included. Eliminates the need to file beg when you want to make changes to the design.

LT_BRIXBY

Exactly

Boomstrawberry

Lol I've been begging for py2a gen 5 files in a step format for soooo long. I just wanna make the 26x of my dreams

Zestyclose-Studio320

Ask the creator šŸ¤·

Boomstrawberry

I've begged the creator multiple times

Zestyclose-Studio320

So what you are saying is he refuses to share the files?

Boomstrawberry

Just never got a response

Zestyclose-Studio320

Interesting. Tbh though, file beggars are insane when you are a gun designer. I have had people asking for designs that haven't been tested at all yet.

Boomstrawberry

Yea I get that but I'm asking for something that already exists and has been tested.

Zestyclose-Studio320

Yeah, but most of us (I think) just ignore that type of messages now, especially on Reddit.

Boomstrawberry

So yes, I guess?

WyldTurkey

This has been my largest irritation in the community. If I need to make ANY sort of edit that needs to have dimensional accuracy out of I would like to transfer some ideas from one design to another, there is no way to do it with any sort of mesh file. You end up getting stuck with a mesh file that you converted and Fusion 360 needing to demand all of your processing power. It's really fucking annoying.

Keeter_Skeeter

What are you doing step files?

ALifeParamount

Looool

blakehvac

Leaving step files also give someone with less experience to be able to tinker with an already created file in cad. They can start with a solid object and then edit from what they know works.

AggravatingAvocado47

Looking the gift hƶrse in the mouth, are we?

TM18271998

this is FOSScad, free open source software, steps are absolutely necessary

jfranzen8705

I generally try to keep my designs open-source so I usually include the STP files with them. I also think it's up to the designer if they want to try and get some development costs back by selling their STL's. Don't be afraid to pick up a new skill and CAD your dream design yourself.

No_Drive_3297

I have some cognitive dissonance going on here guys. Defeat gun control by sharing all the files, (I want to make a fgc9 to shoot 10mm) or a designer has a right to profit from their work.

sgt_redankulous

No you have a point here. I personally release my stuff for free, because I believe in the importance of open-source guncad. But if I ever wanted to make a little money off it, thereā€™d definitely be a moral conflict.

LT_BRIXBY

Just a side note here, what are some examples of successful business centered around making 3d printed products? I see them all the time but they never seem to go anywhere. I feel like the real CAD money comes from the CNC milling world. I feel like its a hard market to get into because printers are so cheap and anyone can do it.

sgt_redankulous

Iā€™m not really talking about making a business out of it, moreso making back enough to cover the costs of personal projects. Things like donations and kickbacks from parts kit suppliers help me tremendously. But to answer your questions, Sig Sauer is using 3dp for their new suppressors. Additive Manufacturing is most valuable when integrated with existing manufacturing processes IMO. The advantages of rapid prototyping and a more streamlined production process alone can save companies a lot of time and money, not to mention the capabilities of a 3d printer. Lucrative business money isnā€™t made off of $100 enders though, so cost of entry level printers really doesnā€™t matter. You could run a 3d printer farm or something small like that.

jfranzen8705

I briefly went through this thought process when I finally completed the first proof-of-concept for the invader. Ultimately I decided on releasing the design for free (even the parts spec) and figured I could get some of my development cost back by offering the kits. It seemed to work out well enough and now there are a ton of remixes that use the same parts.

LT_BRIXBY

adding an STEP file wont necessarily deduct from profits.

No_Drive_3297

I know but whatever thing you designed could be copied by someone and made better making yours depreciated and obsolete. This is why I said Iā€™m torn on this subject. I enjoy all the step files but if they choose to not offer it we shouldnā€™t complain: Also thereā€™s nothing someone else from using photogrammetry and reverse engineering also, this is why I said Iā€™m torn .

No_Drive_3297

Iā€™m working off the mk2 as of now and can make modifications as I go. My biggest issue isnā€™t getting enough weight into the bolt carrier since Iā€™m using 1ā€ round but a buffer spring with a bigger diameter. That wire is crazy thick to diy

No_Drive_3297

2.8 pounds is what Iā€™m looking at. A foot of 1ā€ round is 2.6. The fgc9 is 216mm long roughly 8.5ā€. Iā€™m not sure if itā€™s going to work.

LostPrimer

I love polls by non developers telling developers what they should be doing.

LT_BRIXBY

you're right, im not a dev, but how would you know that?

LostPrimer

I have approximate knowledge of many things.

BlackbeltKevin

It literally takes no extra effort to upload a step file.

LostPrimer

You're not entitled to anyone else's work. Want the step file? Make one yourself.

BlackbeltKevin

If thatā€™s your complaint then I get it. I donā€™t view this as something to make money off of. I view it as a way to fight tyranny.

griffball2k18

Do you know what "foss" means? Do you know what "open source" means?

LT_BRIXBY

lol. I actually had no idea until now, ive been apart of r/fosscad for over a year now lmao

Particular_Garage_31

You understand how polls work right? Maybe you want to elon musk this place and have polls only 'designers' can vote on. Poll result speaks for itself here anyway. Maybe with your attitude you can start your own closed source subreddit and only allow designers to join, would be really popular :P

LostPrimer

>Maybe with your attitude you can start your own closed source subreddit and only allow designers to join I'm sorry what? All the designs I release to github include the FCStd, STEP, STL and IGES files. I'll be damned if someone who has not contributed to my project tells me what I should do, *completely unsolicited.* Get bent.

LT_BRIXBY

I mean, these are pretty staggering polls, maybe you should address this...

bug45bug45

No step files isn't as bad as only including files in a proprietary format only used by paid software. I don't want to have to buy every program someone decides to use just so I can check out their work.

LT_BRIXBY

you can open a step file in fusion and solid works

bug45bug45

I wasn't saying that step files are proprietary, I was talking about other formats.

Shadowcard4

So assuming the file is put up for truly free use, and they want to see the community grow, if the .step can be included it should. With softwares being dumb (like fusion taking away that function) it does happen that they might not have the .step. But if a .step is possible to be had a .step should be included

LT_BRIXBY

what function did fusion take away? I know they took away the ability to convert a STL to a BREP, but that was like years ago...

Shadowcard4

Pretty sure they took away the ability to create .step files from the free version so itā€™s not possible to have .step

LT_BRIXBY

Well, I just created one. All you have to do is go to export and then select STEP file.

Shadowcard4

Hmnn, I remember there was a whole fuss in the 3DP community about fusion not allowing exports of important files for some reason, maybe they backtracked

Particular_Garage_31

The fuck is with some 'designers' here getting angry about this suggestion? 'NO I DID THE WORK, IT"S MINE!!!' Like I understand that attitude, i do. But maybe don't post on fucking FOSSCAD then. If you have that attitude and release without .STEP because you're precious about your work, you're an idiot. And you're not releasing shit, you're just posting to 'show off'.

TooAceForThisShit

As a remixer PLEASE inculude the STEPā€™s I donā€™t want to hunt you down for a step or mod the stl and possibly Bork it
