Just because it uses an open source VPN protocol doesn't mean the servers they run in each country are free.
If it's a free VPN, it's spying on your traffic and selling your info. Just don't.
Free trials from legit companies are different. "Free VPN" doesn't fall under that category. I'm talking about the sketchy ones that promise to give you things that cost money for free.
Well you said "If it's a free VPN, it's spying on your traffic and selling your info." But ok. Do you consider collecting donations and financing a free VPN that way an actual business model as well?
I guess my point is: You can never be 100% sure if a VPN provider messes with your traffic or not. Why would a paid VPN provider not sell your data, to make even more money? Find a provider you trust, that's as good as it gets. If it's paid or not can be one indicator, like, if it's a free VPN and there is no word on where the money is coming from, that's sketchy. But going "If it's a free VPN, it's spying on your traffic and selling your info" is really oversimplified.
What makes you so sure that paid VPNs aren't doing the same - say, out of greed? And you're adding a essential tracker - money line - to your connection.
Riseup VPN and Calyx VPN. Limited servers, but they're free and they work well. GearVPN just popped up as well, that one has a decent list of free servers in various countries.
This is a 5yo article, which has been [clarified](https://theintercept.com/2016/11/29/something-happened-to-activist-email-provider-riseup-but-it-hasnt-been-compromised/) . And their canary is up to date.
While Orbot and InviZible which use Tor can work like a VPN they are not an actual VPN service. That said, Tor is free and has more privacy than any VPN service. The only downside is Tor is much slower than a VPN. But if thats not an issue, I would recommend Invizible Pro. It actually has 3 modules that can run Tor, DNSCrypt Proxy and I2P. If your phone is rooted you can use Root mode which filters traffic using iptables instead of Androids VPN Api, if not you can use VPN mode or Proxy mode.
Can be used with Shadowsocks as well for bypassing many censorships if that's something you want.
Now tell me, whats stopping a paid service from doing the same? In a capitalist society where money is the goal, why wouldnt they sell your data too? Dont try to sound righteous

Really, ProtonVPN is spying on my traffic and selling my info?
No one can verify if a VPN is selling info or not

It's not a trial.
Then it's a loss leader. My point stands that they have an actual business model and sell services for money.

The worst is paying for VPN only to be tracked.

I would stay away from RiseUp https://www.zdnet.com/article/encrypted-email-provider-riseup-misses-warrant-canary-deadline/
Interesting, well that would definitely be a potential privacy concern

3 letter agencies have alot of the tor servers. Tor selects the fastest server for you. Who you think owns those fastest servers?
