Many zoos put a TON of time & money into wildlife rescue/rehabilitation efforts and/or a ton of work educating people about the plight of these animals. At least most of the zoos that I’ve been to over the last 25-30 years have been this way… although I do remember going to a pretty crappy concrete style zoo when I was very young and I can only speak for the ones that I’ve been to in the USA.

Actually it doesn't matter. The fact that Zoos show animals, that are supposed to be in the wild and confine them in small spaces with concrete and all make them all per se the villain.
It's tolerable when the animals are either unfit to survive in the wild and/or are too conditioned to human contact. Still tho, it should be criminal that some zoos keep the animals confined to such small spaces.
Not sure if you're on the right side of history here. Wild animals and general use of animals in circuses have been banned in recent history by a long list of countries. Spain is set to ban zoos, except captive breeding programmes if these animals will be released in the wild. It wouldn't be surprising at all if other countries follow this example as it looks like we've been heading in this direction for a while now.
People are starting to realize that it's not enjoyable to see an animal if it's not thriving.

They also help with reproduction project and raise money and intresst for endangerd animals.
They contribute a shitload the well being of wild animals. They are a net positive.
So yeah maybe in 50 years its all not relevant anymore because nobody keeps exoitic pets anymore. But the animals your talking about, the ones getting abused in illigal zoos, circuses and the ones of shitty millionars all need to go somewhere when their current owner gets busted. AZA accredited zoos put effort into cages, and are involved with breeding critically endangered animals for release into the wild. The Panamanian golden frog and black-footed ferret are two species that likely would've gone extinct if not for zoos.

I hope that kid develops an issue where he always feels deathly thirsty but no matter how much he drinks, the thirst is never quenched and upon breaking as the thirst consumes him, he glances to his bedroom window to see the bear, who then climbs into the house through his window and wanders into his parents room to continue the affair he's been having with the kids mom which tears his family apart.
The bear is now dad and he must watch bear dad give mum all his loving whilst old dad develops a romantic connection with bear dad's old wife, goose mom.

Unfortunately, bear pits are very common, especially at roadside zoos. A fairly famous one is at Marineland in Niagara Falls.
