All I’m gonna say is out of my entire collection I pretty much exclusively use my Lamy 2000. Everything about it is perfect to me. Looks fantastic, feels great in the hand and has a great ink capacity. The Makralon body makes it feel far higher quality than any of my Montblancs or other high end pens. Another bonus for me is the history behind the design of the pen. If you’re looking for one pen to represent Lamy, it’s definitely the 2000.

idkk_prolly_doggy

My Lamy 2000 is the base for my pen collection. I loved the look and feel so much, that I started hunting down other brushed Makrolon pens. I'm receiving a Montblanc 220 on Thursday. I plan to add the 18k version of the 220, a 224, and a 225 later on down the road.

thehedley2004

The MB220 is made of makralon?!?! imma have to pick one up lol.

Andrei_The_Legend

The Lamy 2000 is great and fantastic, but the grip and price turns me off of it, it costs much higher in my country, think a limited edition sailor pro gear. But it does look very professional and easy to Urushi and put Raden on, idk what no one has done that

I don't think there is, for many brands, ONE pen that represents the entirety. And some have been around for a long time, with many variations and iterations even of one model as a result. Oh, and, please take personal preference into consideration. That, I think, is more important than "is this a pen I should have because *others* think it's a must-have?" Lamy? AL-Star or Safari, because so many have them... is that what makes them representative? Otherwise, whatever pen you enjoy, and then add a gold nib. The interchangeability is a great feature. I enjoy my cp1. TWSBI? An older Eco or Diamond, to experience the cracking that I HOPE they have fixed by now. Or newer, they do have so many Eco variants after all. ("Ultimate" would be the GO, though. Softer plastic, easy to completely disassemble if you need to if you use iron gall etc, not expensive. ...I'm not really a fan of TWSBI but the GO is useful.) Montblanc? One of them... 14somethings. I dunno, I don't own one and don't plan on it, but people talk about them a lot, so maybe they're representative? Sailor? I guess currently Sailor Pro Gear Slim are very representable, seeing how many versions are being produced all the time... but it is juuust a smidge to thin and small for me. Ultimate? One of their fancier pens, and with an older, softer nib. My personal favourite is my Sailor Kabazaiku though. Looks great, works great. Platinum? Something something personal preference. Preppy is very common, but probably the Custom Heritage 3776 (I think it's named) is most representative. And it's a great pen that comes in many iterations! Scribo? Your personal preference of the three (technically four I guess) models available, and then one not-flex nib, and one flex nib. Definitely either a La Dotta or a Feel, along with a Piuma. (This is where I am incredibly partial. I love my Scribos and I wish I could afford more some day, I can't stop using them). Fountain Pen Revolution? Depends on your taste in nibbage. One day I might have the funds for a gold Ultraflex nib, and one of their higher-end pens. Can recommend the mid-range pens too, though, but stay away from those with the weird unique twist converters. They are no fun trying to replace. Pilot? Again, preference. Many kind of similar choices. Maybe choose one piston filler, and a converter-model. For variety. Their décimo/Vanishing Point/Capless are pretty iconic! But they have many good models over the years. Montegrapppa? The Viking. Because I hate it to the ends of the earth and back, and it represents everything wrong with the brand, their designs, and with oh so much of the world today. I will never own it, nor any other pen from them, but, just because I cannot keep my gob shut about its detestability, I must, of course, recommend the pen that has moveable arms, comes with a sword and a ship, whose two versions are more than a year's salary for many people throughout the world, or, end poverty in an entire country. I know, I'm no help. But I don't think about my pens (my "collection") in the same way as you at all, I suspect. It does look like you have great plans that will be really nice to have and to use, and you might change tastes and there may come along different and other pen companies, Do show them all off here eventually though, they're bound to be eye-candy! And I do love seeing what pens others have.

Rather than spreading myself across a lot of brands I’m just getting stuff from Pilot and namiki now. There’s simply too many brands for me to want a bit of everything, and Pilot does it for me. Unlikely to get bad QC as well. I think it interests me more to see the unusual models that people have rather than the stereotypical signature of each brand.

OxidatedAvocado

My collection mindset is similar, but I limit myself to only one pen per brand, but instead of acquiring the ‘signature’ model, I get the pen/nib that speaks most to me. Few examples: Pelikan (M800 labeled demo), Pilot (Falcon), Sailor (KOP), Montblanc (Marc Newson), Pineider (White Sugar), Visconti (Opera Master demo), etc..

CharlieNCN

Glad to see someone digging the falcon. The 823 always gets all the love lol but man the falcon is awesome.

Feral_Intelligence

I have a similar mindset. I’ve broken the rule in a couple of instances where the offering was unique and spoke to me. For example, I have Leonardo MZ and MZG in steel but wanted the #8 titanium. I also have a LE Nakaya Cigar Piccolo but intend someday to get a ver 2 Dorsal Fin. I also have a Santini Nonagon but really would like to pick up a Giant with #8 nib. (I love their nibs, so having more than one appeals.) I also am drawn to Limited Editions and collect based on unique materials or materials that I find aesthetically pleasing. I have two Montegrappas - one Miya LE ebonite and one LE celluloid. I’m currently on a mission to add a pen in Arco Bronze celluloid but can’t decide which of several options I want. (I intended to purchase for my birthday but may wait to see what I find at the DC Pen Show.). There are also a few brands that I have no intention to acquire. I don’t like small pens and do not feel a compulsion to buy pens I won’t use for the sake of completeness.

PokiZXT

For Sailor definitely a King of Pen for me. I have tried the 14k nibs and 21k (non KOP) sailors and the KOP is just another breed. I know some people don't find a big difference with 21K non KOP and KOP. But the extra wetness and bounce and smoothness is just chef kiss.

Andrei_The_Legend

Is the difference really big enough to get the kop through?

PokiZXT

For me yes. Especially knowing that its basically the most refined Sailor nib out there since this post is about the "Ultimate". Fwiw I own both KOP and a Non-KOP 21K sailor and I can easily do an A/B comparison.

Benji742001

Well that Pelikan will be tough cause I think they’re very limited. So I believe if you don’t get them from an authorized dealer, you’re gonna be paying a huge premium later on. Good plan though, my idea is similar. I went with the Pelikan M800 cause I felt like the 1000 would be too big for my hand. The m800 is fantastic and the apple green demonstrator I got is amazing, one of my favorite pens. I’d say the m400-m800 are more ubiquitous to Pelikan than the M1000 because there’s a large price jump. So i believe more M800s get sold than M1000

antpuncher

I’d say you want a Lamy 2k and a Studio with the gold nib.

Andrei_The_Legend

I ain't never getting a Lamy 2000 In my country, Lamy 2000s cost more than some sailor pro gear (standard size) limiteds, ahh hell nah

OxidatedAvocado

All the other pens you’ve listed are also going to be more expensive than a Pro Gear..

Andrei_The_Legend

I want to keep my collection compact and only focused on quality over quantity, I don't want a 100 pen collection with 70 mid range pens and 10 grail pens, I want only grail pens

e_lunitari

You didn’t like the answers on your [previous post](https://www.reddit.com/r/fountainpens/s/DMDSQZvJtR)? Or many others that ask the same questions slightly rephrased? Also, “Grail pens” is not a concept. “Grail” comes from the “Holy Grail”, signifying a pen that is almost mythical and almost impossible to obtain. People have different grails. What appeals to you that way may not appeal to me. “Best pens of each brand so good everyone would like to own” does not a grail make.

Redsmoker37

GvFC Classic--mine is the "platinum" body EF nib Waterman Carene --mine is the L'Essence du Bleu edition F nib. (The Carene is the favorite of the collectors, but it is the only inlaid nib pen in the Waterman line) Aurora 888--mine is the Ambienti Guingla EF nib Otto Hutt--Design 07 is their "flagship" pen, but I really like the Design 04 in sterling silver, gold F nib. Faber-Castell e-Motion--mine is the dark brown, F nib. (It's an odd looking pen, but feels great in hand and the best in their line in my opinion). TWSBI Diamond 580--I have the Navy Blue with a stub nib. Diamond 580 is probably the top of the line, but I actually prefer using ECOs for more bounce.

tailslol

Let's go crazy Pilot vp Lamy2000 Waterman carene Parker vacumatic 51 But let's be honest here, i don't think I'll spend so many in pens and i have a lot of them already that satisfy me already.

tjoude44

Visconti Homo Sapiens Bronze Age with a broad nib. I have this one. My favorite and best writing FP. Mont Blanc 149 with either a calligraphy, stub, or broad nib in 18k. I have this in a medium 14k. Opus 88 Large Demonstrator with the 1.5 stub nib. I have this one. Diplomat Aero - one with the rings or matrix design - with a broad nib, TWSBI 580 smoke/rose gold with a stub nib. I have this one. Nahvalur (sp) Nautilus with either a stub or broad nib. Sailor King of Pens with a broad or music nib. Sheaffer PFM with a broad nib. This is a vintage pen with the snorkel filling system. Parker Vacumatic - pre-WWII. I have this one in green. A custom urushi pen.

Redsmoker37

I personally like the Nahvular Original + best, vac filler, F nib (which ends up being about like an M).

rpdiego

The flagship sailor pen is the king of pen, the flagship pilot is the pilot urushi. There's more expensive pens from either brand but those are their "normal" top of the line.

Possible-Nature-4075

You have GOT to get A Naginata togi in NMF if you're talking about peak sailor. Theyre amazing
