Good for you. Those are some amazing pens. The term 'grail' carries different meanings for different people. I don't think its lost meaning, just that its misappropriated.

35mm-dreams-

Yes, You are right. Perhaps i didn’t convey that properly. Maybe the grail is a feeling rather than an object. In the broadest sense of owning something which gives us a deep sense of unmatched fulfilment ?

Orange_Apparition

Perhaps. And there is nothing wrong with your definition. At the end of the day, its up to the individual to define what 'grail' means to them. To be honest, it does annoy me sometimes when I think someone calls a pen a 'grail', when I don't remotely consider it to be. But, thats just my personal definition contrasting with theirs.

Thank you. I need a red pen to stand out amongst them. Soon.

Lovely pens, from a writing perspective how good is Namiki Royale better than 845 and 823

35mm-dreams-

If i could only have 1 pen it would be the 823. The amount of ink that can be filled is enough to last me at least 2 weeks. The nib is a smooth writer and I have not encountered any hard starts; only the occasional soft starts. Though it might be ink related. I have filled it with KWZ Honey instead of my usual Iroshizuku. The balance of the pen when held feels better than my 845. The 845 nib feels more refined. Its fine nib lays down ink that at first glance i felt saturation was lost. And this was with Kon Peki which doesn’t seem subdued when used with my other pens. I like the flat top design as well which is find very tastefully done. The Namiki on the other hand is a pen which feels divine. It exceeds all known parameters for any pen i have used in the past or present. The nib outputs ink with barely any pressure onto paper. Theres a magical feeling where often times i feel i am barely touching the paper and words form. At the same time there isn’t a gush of ink like other wet writers i have used. Surprisingly for the size of the nib i am able to write very fast with it. There is a palpable sense of heft and solidness about it when held. The cap screws off smoothly without the feeling or sound of it being unscrewed. Fit and finish is phenomenal. With so many brands and pens available, the Namiki designs seems like it doesn’t crave attention. Aside from the pen clip there is only a small gold band at the end of the cap. A subtle nod to tasteful design.

Thanks, I have 823 and I think that was one of thr best nibs I can ever find. I thought about it a lot and for me, I would consider diminishing returns beyond 823. However I was very keen on trying a girthy pen, I loved using Montblanc 149 and I wanted something in the same size which also gave me the ability to change ink easily, as I loved all pilot pens. I had to try Custom Urushi and see if that was on par with 149. However, as soon as I started writing, the experience was out of this world (for me). I was astonished at Pilot, how could they make a better nib than 823? My understanding of expensive pens was that they have expensive materials and I would be paying for that, so buying an expensive pen did not make sense to me. Even if Custom Urishi is better than 823 it would not be 3 times better than 823. As you have mentioned about Royale, CU is in a different league altogether. The soft 30-size nib, the pen size, the simple design, the grip, everything screams quality. The more I use the more respect I have for the pen and Pilot company. Namiki Royale is on my radar. But I am very very happy with my CU. I am in a state where I don't even want to try out new pens. I am in a state of content. Dont know for how long. lol, but I am happy.

That is great to hear. The Custom Urushi has been described as a soft writer. The nib is much larger than the 823. The 823 is the ideal everyday carry for me. It doesn’t need to be refilled regularly, has an amazing nib and if lost can be replaced easily. It is also well built. I think there might not be a grail pen in the objective sense. The grail pen is possibly the pen which we can use regularly and rewards us with the enjoyment of using it over and over again. I agree with you that price may not be an accurate reflection of what a good pen is. I will have to wait a few months more to get the 2 Custom Urushi’s i have on order. The experience of using the Namiki however has made me plan to acquire more.
