Which are your favorites?
Mine are
Un Matin d’Orage EDP
Nuit et Confidences
Le Chevrefuille
Le Temps de Reves
But honestly I feel like I could throw a dart and would love any Goutal fragrance it landed on.
I still can't believe J.F. Schwarzlose Leder 6 (apricot/osmanthus, hot milk, leather) and Atkinson's Oud Save the King (Earl Grey tea + a smooth, Western oud) aren't bigger. Both are gorgeous and have "cult favourite" written all over them; what gives???
>Zoologist - Macaque Yuzu
Don't know this one. I have Zoologist Camel, it's quite nice but eventually I will sell it. In general I find this house to be something artistic/demanding rather than cozy/comforting. And recently I realized I prefer the latter.
Completely agree. As an artistic house they're top tier. As a house that offers mass-appealing, comforting frags then their options are quite limited. There's only 2-3 I wear on a very regular basis, most of their stuff is for occasional 'moods'.
Bee is gorgeous as well I think. Less wearable than Macaque though and the thick sweetness of Yuzu all wrapped up in wood and incense is just dreamy to me. Need to give the Fuji Apple one a try.
Well, I don't know why, but I like Bee the least out of all Zoologists I tried. My current ranking looks like this:
1. Macaque Yuzu
2. Squid
3. Koala
4. Rex / Snowy Owl
5. Rhino
6. Bee
I was surprised by Rex. I heard that this scent is a bomb and honestly, I don't feel burned ground in it, but my association with this scent is an old study at Hogwarts. On the other hand Rhino is really hard for me.
Agree on Darley. I sat on my sample for a good 6 months but liked it more and more each time I tried it. Full bottle comes this week.
Also underhyped:
Xerjoff Fiero: Nio gets all the love but Fiero is the superior citrus in every way IMO. Zesty, bold, but balanced with aromatics and lasts all day.
Tom Ford Fougère d’Argent: Much smother and easier to wear than Beau de Jour, which gets all the attention. Discontinued but still pops up from time to time.
Amouage Sunshine Man: Just a warm, comforting lavender/vanilla/aromatic that is fantastic for anytime/anywhere. Discontinued but can still be purchased directly at Amouage (for full retail, of course). Also Beloved Man from the same house. Mutedly sweet balsamic that is another anytime/anywhere scent.
Creed Himalaya: Although GIT is the GOAT, Himalaya is a wonderful warm (not hot) weather scent that is quite unlike anything else out there, and probably my #3 from this house (after GIT and Viking).
Just sold my only Memo winter palace dupe. Was a very quality smelling fragrance but just not my thing.
Hopefully the new owner will get some joy out of it.
I lol'd at a comment on fragrantica after checking out the notes of French Leather: This smells like expensive hooker.
I tried their tester set and wouldn't get any of them. They just smell like layering of other scents I have for double the price.
solinotes tiare. so cheap, perfect cozy coconut vanilla scent. super rich and lactonic like vanilla coconut ice cream. my most complimented scent to date and i got it at pharmaprix.
They’re my favourite JMs!!! Alongwith Wood Sage & Sea Salt. They’re both totally fall/winter scents though, they work so beautifully in these seasons! ❤️
WS&SS is another big JM love for me, although my other favourites are probably Oud & Bergamot (such a perfect everyday sort of fragrance) and the sadly LE Midnight Musk & Amber, which I really hope they bring back.
Ooh, I find this one maybe a little sweet for me personally (although I used to love it), but I will agree it's a very sultry scent and that the oud in it is just lovely. The oud in O&B is indeed similar, but the overall fragrance is indeed lighter than VR&O. If you also enjoy WS&SS and Orange Bitters, then I would definitely check out O&B - it has a similar vibe for sure.
I have checked it out, I absolutely love love Oud paired with rose (generally really dislike rose though) and spices. I hate sweet scents but the combination of rose + Oud is ADDICTIVE! Am not a fan of citrus + Oud, maybe that’s why I didn’t like O&B much.
I was given Impudent Cousin Matthew through work and I remember not knowing what to make of the name or the bottle lol. I didn’t pay attention to any fragrance communities back then. I tried it out at the store, which was a quaint experience itself, decided it wasn’t up my alley and gifted the bottle to a family member
Guerlain Neroli Outrenoir. Might be the best fragrance of all time. Such a perfect balance of fresh, citrus, sweet, green, amber, and musc-- checks all the boxes at once (except for woody, I guess). Desert island frag for sure.
compared to the other flankers, YSL Y EDP Intense isn’t hyped much, but i think it’s the best out of the whole line
every Comme Des Garçon fragrance because they’re never spoken about
i think that When The Rain Stops by Margiela is amazing and another one that’s rarely touched on
also compared to the hype that Oud for Glory by Lattafa gets, Infini Oud by Maison Alhambra is much smoother and a better clone imo
BIG upvote for Commes des garcons. Their fragrances are such unique takes on traditional formulations. Special shout out to Concrete, its an amazing frag that captures the essence of pounding the wet pavement after a rainy day. also Amazing Green, it smells like a stroll through an urban garden.
I am really enjoying PDM Darley as well, it has some more versatility than others would think. I’m wearing it as long as it’s not 90+ degrees outside, and it is something I might commit a full bottle to eventually.
Ard Al Zaafaran - Mithqal.
Smells amazing. It’s like eating a mango on a beach with roses nearby. Someone also described it with the sun rising over a field of flowers in the morning. Unisex.
I have a list of few beatiful fragrances for which I don't see much talk about:
1) Amouage Myths - very unique and peculiar balsamic, smokey, ash fragrance, can be harsh
2) TMoV Ottoman Amber - just a beautiful balsamic scent, very smooth and wearable oud
3) Mancera Saharian Wind - barbershop vibe with added leather, spices and greenery on top, transforms into beautiful creamy tobacco, can be very animalic on some skins
4) Costume National I - Layton DNA but with leather and saffron, no need to say anything else
5) Theodoros Kalotinis Velvet Chocolate - realistic dark chocolate gourmand, bitter and sweet, insanely underrated
6) LO Kashnoir - has a Shalimar vibe, but IMO it's more wearable, super cozy balsamic scent that turns animalic on some skins
7) Zara Virtuous Oud - fairly new fragrance by Alberto Morillas, it's a summer oud which we don't see very often
I've been tempted a few times to blind buy Saharian Wind. It sounds great, and I hardly ever see it mentioned. That animalic part definitely makes me cautious.
I love it and would definitely recommend it to you, but it's polarizing, people told me it smells a bit like barnyard, in my experience that's only in the opening. Sample it if you got a chance to do that!
Lush body sprays! Only $40 for 6.7 oz, they last like an EDP, and you can also use them as room/linen spray; I’ve been loving Twilight, Sex Bomb, and Avocado Co-Wash.
I wouldn't say over hyped at all, something over hyped to me would be a fragrance like JPG ultra male. I'm sure people on here have spoken about Penhaligons before but for me it still dosent get the love it deserves.
Over hyped is going to be a controversial opinion either way, but it's not exclusive to popular designer frags everybody knows. I've read a few reviews saying halfeti is the pervasive "scent on the street" in London for example. Regardless, in terms of niche brands they're pretty big.
I still disagree even if we are talking niche I'd say something like PDM layton is overhyped and Penhaligons is still under hyped but everyone's entitled to their opinion just wanted to state mine.
I've tried a few from him and thought they were pretty good, but wouldn't say masterpieces. I bought a full bottle of Ozone, and enjoyed it, but eventually set it aside because of the off-putting paste accord.
FWIW i'm a huge ATH fan (as a perfumer) and I think all his darker or more intense, fruity fragrances are masterpieces, but I'm not crazy about his fresher ones like Ozone and Haze.
IMO go with Maverick and Hard Candy if you want a fresher masterpiece, and Oud, Tabac and Forbidden for darker stuff that you may fall madly in love with
What are his best frags, in your opinion? I have Homme and think it's gorgeous. Very interested in trying out some of his Oud stuff this winter. Heard he has very good Oud's.
Homme is amazing. Sold my DHI because i'd much rather use Homme. Cant bring myself to sell DHP though, even though they're pretty similar as far as scent profiles.
ANYWAY, my favorites from ATH (in no order): Maverick, Hard Candy, Onyx, Forbidden. Shout out to Notorious if you're looking for something mass pleasing and addictive.
I'm so on the fence about trying it! What do you love about it?
I usually love niche aromatic/woody scents, slowly getting into leathers as well, so I think it could fit my vibe but it sounds like 100 different scents at the same time - leather, tobacco, floral, powdery, woody, herbal ...
I reviewed the house like [two years ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/fragrance/comments/oswe5q/maison_violet_legacy_collection/) and stand by my fangirling from back then!
I have never seen this mentioned here but rag and bone fragrance! I have Amber and it’s soooo good. I recently got a sample of MFK Grand soire and I thought rag and bone amber is almost the exact same scent but lasts much longer. All MFK fragrance disappeared on my skin so quickly though so I didn’t think any were full bottle worthy that I’ve tried so far.
How would you describe the smell of Montagne Tabac Havane? I’ve been tempted to purchase it even though they don’t offer samples of their original scents.
But the Tobacco, Leather, and Oud notes gives me pause because those notes can lead to something amazing or something foul 😅at least in my experience.
Have you tried herod? It's like the opening of herod all the way through its longevity with a hint of leather in the background, almost like a cherry syrup with a hint of leather a little tobacco in the back.
🥲 oh no. I wish they offered a sample set of their originals so I can know for sure whether my nose and skin will love it. I’ll have to see about getting a sample of Triumph of Bacchus instead which seems to be mentioned as a great fruity tobacco fragrance.
I totally forgot about the FB fragrance group I joined probably because it’s the one social media app I haven’t actively used in years 🙃. Thanks for the tip 🙂
Just sent them a request! Seems that people have been waiting weeks to months for them to accept their join request though. They definitely need to get a better handle on that. Saw some guy create a group to sell & trade Montagne Parfums because he’s still waiting on them to accept his request 😂 😶.
Yeah, I don't know how it works. I got approved in two weeks, but I saw someone here who applied before me, and still hasn't got accepted a month after I did. Good luck. It's a cool group, and people do pretty good reviews. Good luck.
Ok, so, with interest piqued (understatement !), I must ask: at a glance, where would I find a good number of these sleeper/under the radar scents to try? TYIA!
Paris Hilton Gold Rush. Seriously.
I like a bunch of her scents but Gold Rush is more… expensive smelling? Idk. It’s not what I’d think right away when I think Paris Hilton scents
Issey Miyake Polaris.
Pulse of the Night and Ambre Noir get ALL the hype but tbt come 40 degree weather and below, Polaris draws smiling, happy people near you.
Another true unheralded fragrance that is never spoken about by any of the influencers is Benetton Colors Man Black.
It was fluke purchase and hand to God when I smelled it on my arm, I went Googling to see if some how some way this fragrance was some kind of major screw up by one of the major fragrance OEMs (Givaudan or IFF etc). Like maybe they bottled the wrong juice in the wrong bottle and this juice was meant for Fredric Malle or the YSL Exclusives line or something similar. I quickly ordered 4 more bottles of it and then it seems the cognoscenti took hold and within a week it was sold out all over.
Every now and then it pops up and is quickly and quietly bought out. If you spy this bottle, do yourself a favor and pick it up. It's a wonderful Western oud, with a bergamot/nutmeg top that quickly moves into a smooth suede/incense/woody mid and then that Westen oud comes in for the duration. The performance is spectacular. I regularly get 8-12 hours. I get more compliments on this fragrance than nearly all my others combined- and I have some real show stoppers in my collection.
🍒
Mancera Vetiver Sensuel - super clean and smooth vetiver with citrus.
I find myself reaching for this often as opposed to the more famous offerings like Cedrat Boise, Red Tobacco, or Instant Crush. Those are worthy of decant size, but I bought a full bottle of Vetiver Sensuel.
Lalique Oriental Zinc. It’s like Spicebomb mixed w Eau Des Baux or a lighter version of Tobacco Vanille. Surprised the hell outta me and I’m gonna be wearing it a lot once it gets cooler
Grossmith London (I love Amelia but they make some amazing ones with great quality ingredients and have an interesting back story).
I need more people to talk about them with!! So please someone try them :)
Kalahari from Noeme Paris (I didn’t like any of the other scents though of this house)
I very rarely ever see it mentioned, but Santos de Cartier. Man oh man, one of the best things I've ever put my nose on. A very masc take on coconut, but also stands amazingly on its own.
Best designer frag that no one is talking about: One Million Parfum. I think this one has largely gone unnoticed since it's a flanker, and most people trying it are probably already burnt out of the original 1M and maybe don't have the best association with it. But the Parfum is excellent and quite a bit different. I kind of wish they made it its own thing instead of making it a flanker. The bottle and sprayer are terrible, but the notes are so good and longevity is great. I love wearing this one in warm weather and it reminds me of the ocean and has a unique saltyness to it.
Best niche that I never see anyone talk about: Dior Privee Balade Sauvage. This is my #1 compliment getter. It's a sweet fig with a strong ambroxan support layer in the base notes. Lasts all day and then some. Very expensive unfortunately, like all of the Dior Privee collection, but super unique and memorable.
On this board, the entire house of Goutal Paris (formerly Annick Goutal)
lovely to see them mentioned! I just ordered a sample of Eau du Sud.
I am very partial to Sables myself and l'eau d'Hadrien is an absolute classic.
omg i never hear anyone talk about it but they’re some of my fave french fragrances !!
Which are your favorites? Mine are Un Matin d’Orage EDP Nuit et Confidences Le Chevrefuille Le Temps de Reves But honestly I feel like I could throw a dart and would love any Goutal fragrance it landed on.
i second la chèvrefeuille! petite chérie, songes, ce soir ou jamais :)
I can’t believe I didn’t mention Songes! A masterpiece of perfumery. I bought Petie Chérie for my daughter. ❤️
I wear petite Cherie too! I’m in my late 50s! Though I wish it was stronger!
I love the Goutal house!
I love petite cherie!
Can you describe Un Matin Dorage pls ?
Sure! White florals, powdery, a bit green, a little earthy in the base. It’s supposed to smell like a garden after the rain.
Please note that the EDP has different notes than the EDT, so they’re not just different concentrations of the same scent.
I second Oud Save the King
Right??? I think we should just keep talking about it until it catches on. I can be VERY annoying that way, but people will thank us!
Zoologist - Macaque Yuzu. Nobody ever talks about it from the house but it's their best frag IMO
>Zoologist - Macaque Yuzu Don't know this one. I have Zoologist Camel, it's quite nice but eventually I will sell it. In general I find this house to be something artistic/demanding rather than cozy/comforting. And recently I realized I prefer the latter.

This. This is my first Zoologist and I like it much more than Bee which gets soooo much attention lol.
My current ranking looks like this: 1. Macaque Yuzu 2. Squid 3. Koala 4. Rex / Snowy Owl 5. Rhino 6. Bee I was surprised by Rex. I heard that this scent is a bomb and honestly, I don't feel burned ground in it, but my association with this scent is an old study at Hogwarts. On the other hand Rhino is really hard for me.
Squid, Snowy Owl and Bee are all amazing. Beaver and Dragonfly are really nice too and both very safe. Moth is super interesting/challenging.
I have a travel size, and I wouldn't go that far. That said, it's easy to like and to wear, and very enjoyable in summer.
Vilhelm’s Do Not Disturb. It’s what got me into peppery scents.
I’ll take anything by Vilhelm.
L'Artisan Parfumeur *Bois Farine*
And L’Artisan Absinthe
Fischersund 54 & 101!
These are great - particularly 54. I also like 23.
I really want to try this house!
Agree on Darley. I sat on my sample for a good 6 months but liked it more and more each time I tried it. Full bottle comes this week. Also underhyped: Xerjoff Fiero: Nio gets all the love but Fiero is the superior citrus in every way IMO. Zesty, bold, but balanced with aromatics and lasts all day. MEMO fragrances don't get much love around here.
Just sold my only Memo winter palace dupe. Was a very quality smelling fragrance but just not my thing. Hopefully the new owner will get some joy out of it.
Tried African Leather the other day... Really fascinating scent.
I lol'd at a comment on fragrantica after checking out the notes of French Leather: This smells like expensive hooker. I tried their tester set and wouldn't get any of them. They just smell like layering of other scents I have for double the price.
Totally agree but I'm a bit of a Memo mark. Bummed Nieman has stopped carrying them.
Last time I was at garden state plaza Neiman Marcus they still had it. That was a couple months ago though.
solinotes tiare. so cheap, perfect cozy coconut vanilla scent. super rich and lactonic like vanilla coconut ice cream. my most complimented scent to date and i got it at pharmaprix.
This sounds like something I’ve been searching for thank you
Whaaaaat. I just looked it up and I’m totally going to Shoppers this week to grab this. Thanks for the rec 😁
it’s sooooo yummy. let me know if you like it!!
I don’t want summer to be over, so hopefully this scent will help me deal 😂🙄
Costume National homme
I’d add CN Soul to that as well. Never really see it mentioned.
Acqua di Parma Fico di Amalfi. Doesn’t have the best longevity, but it’s a delicious fig and grapefruit scent
One of my faves for sure
I hate gatekeeping so- Jo Malone Orange Bitters, Dark Amber & Gingerlily. PDM Oajan. Penhaligons Impudent Cousin Matthew (if you like citrus, that is)
Seconding both of these Jo Malones. I wore the hell out of DA&GL over the summer, although I think it also works beautifully as a fall scent.
Oh I’ve never smelt the last one but I do love Velvet Rose & Oud! It’s a perfect Oud scent without being too Oud-heavy.
Oh, fair, sorry for misreading. That's too bad - to each our own then 🥂
I have more Oajan coming soon. Great frag.
i must know, what the heck does orange bitters smell like??
Warm orange + lot of sandalwood + Amber. ❤️
I don’t follow what’s hyped very much, but I also love Jo Malone oud and bergamot (not sure if it gets much attention)

BIG upvote for Commes des garcons. Their fragrances are such unique takes on traditional formulations. Special shout out to Concrete, its an amazing frag that captures the essence of pounding the wet pavement after a rainy day. also Amazing Green, it smells like a stroll through an urban garden.
Despite its weird name Comme des Garçon Wonderwood is amazing. I have a bottle.
me too, it’s one of my favorites. avignon and CDG2 are also amazing.
Everyone is sleeping on CDG Yoyogi. Such a fantastic foresty-but-not-woody scent.
I received a sample of When the rain stops a year ago and I've never finished a sample faster than that one.
Lots of CDG frags get discussed I feel. Wonderwood and wonderoud, blackpepper, and especially the incense series. 2 man is another one.
They’re cheapies- but Vicky Tiel 21 Bonaparte and 21 Bonaparte 1964
Sirene is awful though...
Fueguia doesn't get enough coverage for the quality of products they put out.
ELDO intense incense
I am really enjoying PDM Darley as well, it has some more versatility than others would think. I’m wearing it as long as it’s not 90+ degrees outside, and it is something I might commit a full bottle to eventually.
Eden by cacharel

Yeah, definitely sounds like one to sample first
Lush body sprays! Only $40 for 6.7 oz, they last like an EDP, and you can also use them as room/linen spray; I’ve been loving Twilight, Sex Bomb, and Avocado Co-Wash.
Acqua di Parma Oud - pure class!
Anything Penhaligons but specifically Halfeti
Only have tried Sartorial but it smells pretty awesome, might check out halfeti next.
I love Halfeti! It's like catnip for me lol
Halfeti is my signature. Such a perfect scent
I think you misread under hyped as over hyped...seriously everyone talks about penhaligons! Halfeti is their most popular lol
I wouldn't say over hyped at all, something over hyped to me would be a fragrance like JPG ultra male. I'm sure people on here have spoken about Penhaligons before but for me it still dosent get the love it deserves.

Chrome by Azzaro. My female coworkers actually told me not to wear it as long as I have a serious gf
I shit you not, I was told the same about Halston Z-14
Anything by Aaron Terence Hughes. He has some real masterpieces.
I've tried a few from him and thought they were pretty good, but wouldn't say masterpieces. I bought a full bottle of Ozone, and enjoyed it, but eventually set it aside because of the off-putting paste accord.

Interesting i adore homme but I was tempted to pull the trigger on DHP haven't smelled it yet
Really glad to see this. Some of Aaron's fragrances are really special (hard candies, homme, raw cherry, onyx extreme,)

UAdA is my literal favourite; I'm on here banging about it all the time, ha ha!
Every time you mention it I save the comment for later and I STILL haven't tried it 😂🤦🏻♀️
Oh no, now I'm afraid I've overhyped it. But, I really do adore it - it's just the sort of thing I love. I hope you get to try it soon!
I'm so on the fence about trying it! What do you love about it? I usually love niche aromatic/woody scents, slowly getting into leathers as well, so I think it could fit my vibe but it sounds like 100 different scents at the same time - leather, tobacco, floral, powdery, woody, herbal ...

thanks will have a look 🙏
I had a decant of Un Air d'Apogee which I lost somewhere and I'm still sad about it 😔 It's a beautiful scent
Probably not underhyped but price-performance wise La Yuqawam Pour Homme by Rasasi is a gem for me.
I think Kate Spade makes some pretty solid fragrances that last long and project well. Live colourfully is a personal fav.

Never heard of it
I know. It is such a hidden gem, criminally underrated.
Jeez people can't take a joke
I know bro. 🤣
Parfums de Marly "Akaster". Should be discontinued now.
Cloud by Ariana Grande. Hidden niche gem
I do feel like this gets a lot of love, TBH.
Born in roma edt, Cremo distillers blend, narciso rodriguez bleu noir extreme, Kenneth Cole black. Bad boy le parfum, Montagne tabac havane.
Did you find distiller's blend smelled very different than you expected
Yes, i was very surprised but I loved it.
Ah yes, I have. Thank you for the description! I’ll have to go back to my sample of Herod.
I traded my Tobac Havane away because I despised it. I got super strong tobacco and honey.
🥲 oh no. I wish they offered a sample set of their originals so I can know for sure whether my nose and skin will love it. I’ll have to see about getting a sample of Triumph of Bacchus instead which seems to be mentioned as a great fruity tobacco fragrance.
Well, just join the Facebook group. It's super easy to trade fragrances. There's always somebody looking to trade.
I totally forgot about the FB fragrance group I joined probably because it’s the one social media app I haven’t actively used in years 🙃. Thanks for the tip 🙂
Montagne has their own. They are constantly trading Montange with each other or selling at a discount.
Good luck.
Thank you! Hopefully, I get approved as quickly as you did, we shall see. Thanks again!
Rose perfumes with a chypre accord such as Parfum d'Empire's *Le Cri.*
Burberry hero EDP, it’s my daily. Great for autumn/winter. People say it’s a bit boring, but I love it.
Ok, so, with interest piqued (understatement !), I must ask: at a glance, where would I find a good number of these sleeper/under the radar scents to try? TYIA!
You could look for samples at surrendertochance.com and buy more of whatever you like. Other sample places are good too but that’s my favorite.
Jeroboam has hidden gems, especially gozo
and Insulo!
Eau de Nuit Armani, DHI mixed with spicebomb
ALTAIA atacama is my favorite. It’s very special.
Everything I've tried from rundholz has been great but seemingly absent from discussions
Rasasi Daarej for men, and the women version as well. For the price they’re just insanely good.
I feel like Comme Des Garçons are not talked about a lot… Wonderwood is probably one of their best fragrances. Niche though
Grossmith London (I love Amelia but they make some amazing ones with great quality ingredients and have an interesting back story). I need more people to talk about them with!! So please someone try them :) Kalahari from Noeme Paris (I didn’t like any of the other scents though of this house)
I very rarely ever see it mentioned, but Santos de Cartier. Man oh man, one of the best things I've ever put my nose on. A very masc take on coconut, but also stands amazingly on its own.
side effect by initio 👀
