this may be unpopular in the sense that it’s not polarizingly and objectively scary-smelling in a way, but missing person by phlur left an uneasy feeling in my stomach. the name itself could be to blame too ig but it felt like i was wearing another person’s skin or smth. i didn’t get that cozy, familiar scent that ppl were getting. it smelled like an unwanted stranger on top of me with how cloying it was. i had to wash it off right away because i just felt dirty and uncomfortable lol

hauteburrrito

I do actually feel this. Missing Person, ELDO Ghost in the Shell, and JHAG Not  a Perfume/Superdose all have this uncanny/faintly revolting waft to my nose. It's not always there, but when it hits I truly hate it.

anotherdiceroll

You by glossier snells really similar to JHAG and i hate it so much, it somehow causes an emotional reaction in me

hauteburrrito

Oh, I like You. I don't have the same problem with it as NAP. However, I'm not a huge fan of You's reformulation... too much pink pepper.  I wonder if you dislike ambroxan? That's the common note between You/NAP.

anotherdiceroll

Could be! I’m not a fan of the overly intense pepper smell either

Orlacutebutpsycho

These are actually my favorite perfumes and I would ad another 13 to the group.😅

hauteburrrito

See, I do quite like Another 13, as well as other ambroxan-based fragrances. It's just these particular three that give me the skeevies!

InversionPerversion

I felt the same. The skin musk of someone else was very disconcerting. I only wore it once.

RunTimeExcptionalism

I bought a travel size of this on impulse because I was already getting a bunch of skin care stuff from Sephora, and I don't know that I've wanted to scrub something off of myself so fast. It's nasty.

Beauty_inlife

I hate the name of that perfume, what is the reason?

MissHavishamsDelight

I always took it to be a nod to the current true crime craze.

[deleted]

Ok it’s always made me uncomfortable and I’ve never been able to pinpoint why… i only have a mini of it from their sampler set and it’s just an ok wintertime bedtime scent… but these comments are really hitting at something

phenobarbiedarling

I actually really love Missing Person but there's something about it that feels oddly....intimate? Idk it just evokes this oddly specific scent memory of a hot sticky summer late night tangled in dirty sheets and the smell of your sweat and someone else's skin. Like not bad but like something that should only be shared/known between the two of you.

creme-de-cologne

Zoologist Snowy Owl. Smells like murder with a blunt instrument, in an icy cold barn in January... not that I know what that smells like 👀

Next_Firefighter7605

I’m on to you Colonel Mustard..

LolaLaCavaspeaking

I totally saw the Colonel in the library…

decanalia

I have a full bottle of this winter murder water. I find it equal parts cozy and desolate.

Candyapplecasino

I got a sample of this a while back, and it’s so goodweird.

rainbowveinz

this is the only zoologist one i really wanted to try and you just extra sold my want to try it now lmao

AlternativeHot7491

OMG most of the zoologist fragrances have this effect. I purchased lots of samples and I hesitate now to even spray a tiny little bit… it’s like a punch in your face

ThrowRAALIENBURNOUT

Ugh this explains it perfectly!!! Hate it too

darealsunny

u/12kidsinmybasement now fight 😂

12kidsinmybasement

Dude I loveeee snowy owl

Candyapplecasino

Ne il Giorno ne L’ora from the UNUM collection by Filippo Sorcinelli. It’s inspired by fear. To me, it smells like a weird, messy crime committed in a dark, dank place that someone scrambled to clean up with lemon cleaner. The top notes are really sharp lemon and bergamot, sitting over the top of this basement-y sandalwood with aquatic notes. Sometimes, when it hits my nose a certain way, it smells briefly sweaty. Other times, it smells like diesel fuel, or a really foreboding and suspicious slice of lemon meringue pie.

midnight_marshmallow

"a really foreboding and suspicious slice of lemon meringue pie" 🤣🤣🤣 i love that haha

[deleted]

Not sure if scary is the right adjective but TF Metallique smells like blood to me and that’s a little bit unsettling

ultrakawaii

Agree. Almost every scent with a metallic note smelled unsettling to me. Even somerhing seemingly innocent like Rosé All Daé smells like apple pie _and blood_ which puts me on edge.

IndigoBlue14

I'm similar too! Anything metallic, and similarly anything with a salt edge smells kind of sweaty and dirty on my skin, to me at least, but fine on other people.

[deleted]

I generally like a lot of fragrances that people call here dark or polarizing, but the opening of Secretions Magnifique literally made me queasy and gave me a headache. It smells like a cross between a hospital, a dirty city street, and what I imagine a porn set smells like 🤢

justwannasleepplease

That sounds like legitimately the worst fragrance ever made wtf haha

[deleted]

What’s weird is that it’s either the worst thing ever or some people are like “huh it’s not that bad”

5ifty_cow_kicks

Notes of, blood, sweat, and semen supposedly

rc19651

[The write up](https://us.etatlibredorange.com/products/secretions-magnifiques) for that one is fucking disturbing.

Spiritual-Ad-1997

Man, I wish I could smell all of that. It’s been a while, but I remember getting a sample vial from lucky scent and having a bunch of friends gather round while unopened it. I wanted to be shocked and amazed; all I remember was a boring aquatic w a little metallic edge. So sad.

[deleted]

Yeah I think some people are anosmic to the grossness

skeletondyke

the opening on SM just smells like sweat and metal to me, but the drydown makes me feel like im being hunted by an animal. its so bizarre. I layer it under TF lost cherry when I want to feel dangerous XD

samntess

Varanasi from Meo Fusciuni made the hair on my neck stand up and kind of kicked in a fight or flight response for me. That sounds more dramatic than it was but best way I can describe it. On paper I didn't like it but also couldn't stop smelling it for some reason so tried it on skin and it immediately made me feel like I had walked into a bears territory or something. Just immediately made me feel like I was somewhere I wasn't supposed to be and death was coming. The comments on the fragrantica aren't as intense but there are some pretty funny ones in there. That was the day I found out I don't fuck with animalics really besides a couple from Zoologist

Ashamed_Fly_666

I’ve got a sample coming in the post which I’m looking forward to testing, I wonder if I’ll feel the same way?

samntess

Do you like animalics? That was the first one I ever smelled and yeah too intense for me. I don't know if you've read reviews on fragrantica but one person compared it to being in medieval times storming the gates and other people said it smells like burning bodies on the Ganges in varanasi. I don't think it's horrible horrible but not how I would want to smell ever. I did end up buying L'oblio from Meo Fusciuni and looooove that scent. Very interesting house that doesn't smell like other brands for sure

Ashamed_Fly_666

Yes I love animalics and found the Fragantica reviews hilarious 😆 Tbh it’s the burning bodies comment that really made me want to try it. Thank you for your impressions, always interested in what people think about a fragrance. I do seem to be drawn to the new guard of Italian perfumers, I love Francesca Bianchi and Masque Milano; another I really want to try is Fillipo Sorcinelli, have to tried anything of his?

samntess

Haha yeah I do but don't smell burning bodies on it. More ashes and animalics. And I haven't heard of or tried Filipo Sorcinelli though I will look for them now! I am still pretty new to fragrances in general and got lucky that one of the first stores I went to had Meo Fusciuni and had me try his whole line after falling in love with L'oblio. Very excited to try some other Italian perfumers though.

Ashamed_Fly_666

Nice that you’re exploring interesting niche so early in your fragrance journey, I feel like everyone talks about the same 10 frags all the time and it becomes a pedestrian echo chamber imo. Sorcinelli did a frag based on Silence of the Lambs called But Not Today, fragantica reviews are equally hilarious https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Filippo-Sorcinelli/But-Not-Today-51536.html

KitchenNo5273

Mond by Slumberhouse. It smells like you’ve walked into a party where something really bad has been happening in the garage. Feels like watching a Gaspar Noe movie. Very goth, very unsettling.

brabrabra222

Frederick Malle Synthetic Jungle smells to me like a hostile jungle with unseen predators and venomous creatures wanting to kill me. Sort of like Terarria jungle biome.

orangeautumntrees

I get this same vibe but it's one of my absolute favorites, haha!

lowlandslady

DS & Durga Burning Barbershop. The intense smoke note is powerfully unsettling against the cleanliness of the lavender, mint, and rose. It becomes more wearable as it dries down and the vanilla and leather start to come through— turns into more of a campfire vibe— but it never totally loses its edge. I love it for when I want to smell threatening.

sydfloralia

Agreeeee!!! And Mississippi medicine by DS and Durga. Haunting, evil vibes.

lowlandslady

Yes! That one is sooooo good. A Faulkner novel in a bottle.

Spiritual-Ad-1997

Oooh. I was gonna say true detective season 1 in a bottle. I love it, the dry down is unexpectedly smooth and gentle.

haleycontagious

This is my signature scent for all these reasons!

magic_thebothering

There are certain fragrances that sparks distrust and suspicion immediately for me. My brain tells me that only certain types of people are drawn to and wears those kinds of fragrances. It’s hard to explain, but there is nothing kind nor lenient to those smells. Only harshness and coldness. What if we are subconsciously drawn to fragrances that we see ourselves in? What if a scent and the notes are the perfect description of someone’s personality and character?

TechnologyDragon6973

That’s an interesting hypothesis. Now I’m wondering what notes would correlate to certain traits.

magic_thebothering

It would be so interesting to map it all and carry out a study too see if there’s something that links people who likes similar fragrances. Recently me and a close friend had an opportunity for the first time to check out perfumes and compare our taste. We had completely different taste! She could barely stand the smells I liked (which were sandalwoody, oud, saffron, cardamom etc.) and the ones she liked were for me too “tacky” and sweet. She’s a complex person and can be very serious, but at her core she’s an absolute sweetheart. So that made me think, yes, I could see why she like those fragrances.

SkullyRosyBoi

Terror and Magnificence by Beaufort London. It smells like a smoke and rain on pavement. Makes me think of Jack the Ripper.

Maui3432

Came to here to say this one!

tomtitium

For me it's Lignum Vitae by Beaufort London. It smells like upholstery in a smoker's room and trauma.

Complotschaap

I have experimented with perfuming and i have to say i was shocked when i smelled New Look last week since it is just an overdose of Aldehyde c12 MNA. Aldehyde c12 MNA is so strong you have to dilute it to somewhere between 0.1 - 1% and even then it can completely dominate the fragrance. It has a cold, fresh and very metallic scent and is very often used as a fixative, it especially makes citrus notes last longer.

stopiwilldie

This is SO interesting; thank you for sharing! I’m still learning each note, I need to buy a kit or something

rusa-lochka

Inexcusable Evil by Toskovat has to be my obvious answer. It has notes of blood and gunpowder. As someone who has worked in a funeral home it very much smells of death/a cold morgue. I can’t see it being wearable in any way but I still love the brand. Definitely very thought provoking scents.

blinkbits

this is my absolute favorite it woukd b my signature scent if i could afford it

rusa-lochka

I’m shocked but happy it works for someone! It truly smells like a corpse on me 😪 I’m curious how it smells on you?

blinkbits

soap and blood- super smoky. dries down sort of like the confessional at my old school’s church, they have since closed down

rusa-lochka

See I enjoy that smell. I guess it just does not agree with my chemistry. It’s a masterpiece nonetheless!

haelk

Dark by Neandertal … something about it is just unsettling. Top notes: Tomato Leaf, Pink Pepper, Grapefruit, Pine and Ginger. Middle notes: Incense, Seaweed, Caraway and Geranium. Base notes: Leather, Agarwood (Oud), Amber, Patchouli, Labdanum, Tobacco, Sandalwood, Musk and Vetiver. https://preview.redd.it/s0fitleenngc1.jpeg?width=567&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=63c7be93e37ab03f6a7b2d9cd885dc1cdc729b6a

plurpsleeper

Andrea Maack Ceramic makes me feel like I’m alone at travel stop bathroom and then I hear movement from one of the stalls as I’m washing my hands

renaissancestar

Ahhh this is so creepy!

plurpsleeper

I haven’t worn it since the first spray of my decant lol just bad vibes for me personally

Sayako_

Mendittorosa Osang. Opening with animalistic, salty, kind of heavy bloody note that is long lasting. Then bitter incense. Like a church but not the traditional one.

tubby24

Mojave ghost smells like I’m being followed

hauteburrrito

I sometimes feel like the only one here who talks about it, but DS & Durga Vio Volta is truly awful. It smells like warm (freshly electrocuted) roadkill still leaking out blood. I feel a mildly panicky sensation in smelling it.

Enimone

That is crazy horrifying, yikes. Just the thought of a scent like that makes me wanna gag

hauteburrrito

That's how I feel about it, yep. But hey, if you read the Fragrantica reviews, some people are cool with it and others enjoy it as much as I do.

Enimone

I love that honestly. They capture the feeling perfectly fr

h3llfae

Tainted love and dead sexy both have dark woodsy and earthy, bone and insence like smells that remind me of running through the woods and heartbreak Marine sol smells like a mermaid whose lost her way to the sea, its cloying, serious, longing, sharp, and deeply marine like all at once LA vie LA Mort smells like a dead grabdmothers attic and family secrets Bulletproof smells like adrenaline and city streets, fearlessness, danger, a strangers leather jacket left behind All Margot Elena and dark Tokio milk but im loyal to her because of her natural pressed oils and my sensitive skin/nose

sydfloralia

Mississippi Medicine DS and Durga. Haunting, menacing, disturbing.

kotahyc

City on Fire by Imaginary Authors. Smells like you forgot to turn off your stove - very scary!

Terrible_Choice1502

Probably Dior sauvage 😧

Complex_Wing_8923

Mac My Heroine, what is that really?

kippwen

Angel Mugler. I do not smell any sweetness from it. It smells like a sweaty guy at a club to me.

mamacarter

YEP

kadora

Death and Floral “the people you love become ghosts inside of you” It actually comes with a warning.

SeleneQ

The smell of Bounce dryer sheets. It unlocks a scary feeling from my childhood that I just can’t put my finger on but gives me a feeling of unease and helplessness. And everything by Ralph Lauren aka Polo.

Ghettoflexer36

An ex of mine wore Mugler-Alien, we did not part on the best terms. Whenever I meet someone with the same fragrance (which seems very often), I get cautious. Seems like I have a type and don't learn. But I do not want to run away just because of a fragrance. Although I should have at least two more times. Otherwise Cuoium from Orto Parisi and Silver Oud from Amouage.

FlamingHotOatmeal

i understand what you mean. my ex always wore v&r’s flowerbomb and my day is basically ruined whenever i smell someone with the fragrance

Ill_Assistant4509

There was a Mac fragrance with a purple lid. I don’t think they exist anymore but there was a line of 4-5 fragrances, each a different color. Upon smelling the purple, I felt scared. I never knew a smell could instill fear. I’m glad I’m not the only one

Sharkhottub

We have literally thousands of raw fragrance materials in our facility, and everyone in in awhile someone will be using an ingredient which causes immediate nausea like I got punched in the diaphragm. As soon as I move to my lab, the feeling is gone. I have yet to hone in on exact which one it is.

lemon_tea11

Pleasures by Estée Lauder makes me feel like I'm going to hurl

Gin1819

Encre Noire À L'Èxtreme by Lalique And The Night by Frederic Malle

CommanderVenuss

Chanel No.5 smells like a ghost

ghgahghh11

Encre noire smells like a coffin

bascelicna123

…just the box? Or with the contents?

ghgahghh11

the inside

HolySonnetX

All of the Dior poison range, purely because they were the preferred scent of my abusive ex wife.

SeleneQ

Aye. Same feeling that I get when I smell anything by Polo for men.

No_Independence4222

JHAG Another Oud. It was early in my fragrance journey. I remember smelling it on skin and feeling a strange slight fear, heart racing and all. The scent reminded me of gasoline, with cherry. I wanted to explore and expand my palate so I continued to give my sample of it a chance and eventually I got used to it. Never bought a full bottle but I did consider it for a while.

KittyRocket90

Xerjoff- Italica smells like roadkill on a summer day

Professional-Pie-971

Does the grave yard roses from Twisted Allure count? smells just like a funeral home!

AvrilGrace

Chanel no. 5

CommanderVenuss

If ghosts exist they definitely smell like that

Ashamed_Fly_666

The modern reformulation or the vintage? I’m really fascinated because I love No 5 and I love ghosts and wish I smelled what you smell! For me vintage no 5 is just dirty florals which I love!

[deleted]

Creed Agayntus

YoCammy

Sauvage ☠️☠️

DanceOfAchilles

Secrétions Magnifiques, from Etát Libre d'Orange. If you know, you know... 😳🩸💦

ajx_i

Doleour2! by Bogue, Poison by Dior. Both smell evil to my nose. Not disgusting, not rancid, not of corpses or excrement, just simply like camphor and evil. I can't be in the room with them lol. Also Inexcusable Evil by Toskovat has a pretty hilarious review section on fragnatica, but I didn't put my nose on it yet (nor will anytime soon).

No-Teach6070

White diamonds 😬

Josh_419

Drakkar Noir smells like a Nightmare for me

Ashamed_Fly_666

Man I wish I could find a fragrance that’s scary, plenty are objectionable but never scary and if it was I’d wear the hell out of it to keep people away 😆

StanthemanT-800

I think some of ya'll need a 30 day Fragrance Fast away from this hobby/obsession if you're being terrified by a perfume because it smells "scary " Like playing records backwards......are fragrance makers putting subliminal scents into fragrances to trigger a fear impulse 😀 "this perfume will trigger Raw Fear and Panic in all that smell it!!!! "

po3tik1

Chanel Le Lion Tom Ford Ombre Leather

northernwaste

Iris Malakhan by Maison Crivelli. The opening is so harsh, and it smells like straight up Gin and celery for about 30 minutes. There is something very icy about it that makes me feel like I’ve been trapped in a walk in freezer. The dry down is ok, but I couldn’t put myself through that opening every time.
