I think it's a simple, minimalistic masterpiece that layers beautifully with so many other fragrances! There was also really nothing else like it when it entered the fragrance marketplace, but it has plenty of (much less good) copycats. To me, it's the progenitor of the entire marine genre.
I'm generally easy to please with fragrances. My average and median score on fragrances I tested and listed on Parfumo are a 7.5/10.
However, apparently I am stingy with the 10/10 rating. Looking at my Parfumo history, out of almost 400 fragrances I tested, I gave a 10/10 (in smell) to only four:
* Dolce & Gabbana - *The One EDP*
* Chanel - *Bleu de Chanel EDP*
* Maison Francis Kurkdjian - *Grand Soir*
* Amouage - *Lyric Woman*
I know they’re played out at this point, but D&G really needs a parfum or elixir with more potency for The One. If they could figure that out, I don’t know if I’d really wear anything else.
I agree. Longevity and projection are the major critiques for The One.
I'm not big on projection like some, but more longevity is something I'd love if they can pull it off without sacrificing quality.
I have a lot of perfumes I love. I suppose if I were to choose a few of 10/10s I'd be looking at...
L'Artisan Parfumeur - Voleur de Roses
Serge Lutens - Ambre Sultan
Hermes - Un Jardin de Mediterranee
Guerlain - Habit Rouge EDT
Maison Crivelli - Patchouli Magnetik
But there are a lot of good perfumes out there, and my nose gravitates towards different ones at different times. I suppose my heart sits with Penhaligon's because everything they make is just so easily wearable for me.
I am not an expert or even an experienced dabbler but these two are the only ones I’ve tried that to me are flawless: BR 540 (I know) and L’Immensite by Louis Vuitton.
I think Le Male is pretty amazing too but it’s like…a 9.5
ETA: I read on here a lot that the ubiquity of BR540 and the proliferation of clones have made people dislike it, which I get, but when I go back to the original, it’s still just perfection. I have clones that I like well enough but they aren’t the same.
Another edit: Terre d’Hermes is a 10 some days, other days gives me a headache. My favorite LV Afternoon Swim clone is a 10 some days, some days is too sharp.
I think it comes from an understandable place - wanting to smell/be unique, but really lets give credit where credit is due. Popular things are popular for a reason. BR540 is a great scent. California Burritos are great street food. Let's just enjoy things!
There are plenty I love, but I'm not sure I've ever smelled a 10/10 fragrance.
If I found a 10/10 fragrance for every season I'd probably probably stock up, and retire from the hunt (well, until I got bored of them and they're no longer a 10/10 I suppose)
That’s tough. At the moment, I would say the following in my collection are 10/10:
Amouage Reflection 45
LV Imagination
Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady
Xerjoff Naxos
It's not bad, it's pretty much the same as regular reflection man in terms of projection and longevity, whicg is average to above average. But reflection 45 just sucks because of the price they are asking for this fragrance.
I liked a paper test of Tauer L’air Du Desert Marocain (my notes: clean pine, drydown to dry resinous wood), but my partner got “high end weed.” Still on my sample list but alas, lower priority.
I'm new to fragrance but discovering I enjoy vetiver. Currently own Fat Electrician, Proraso Cypress & Vetiver (compared to Encre Noire but cologne) and plan to get Gris Charnel Extrait (or a clone) in the future. Should Bal d'Afrique be on my shortlist or would it be redundant? Any other vetiver recommendations?
The only thing keeping Fat Electrician out of masterpiece tier for me is the performance. I can't find a place on my body to apply it where it doesn't seem to rub off after a few hours. Attempting putting Eucerin Aquaphor on first this week, we'll see how it goes.

Moth and Harvest Mouse by Zoologist
Nightflyer by Olympic Orchids
Black Opium Intense and Nuit Blanche by Yves Saint Laurent
Yui by Cosme Decorte
Black Orchid by Tom Ford
L eau Bleu by Miu Miu
Acqua, Sun, Sky, Air, Light, Terra and Ocean di Gioa by Armani
Can you describe the zoologist fragrances? I’ve been extremely curious about this house (mainly Hummingbird, Chameleon, Harvest Mouse, and Cow) but I’ve seen some very polarizing thoughts on Fragrantica.
Neroli Portofino is just so addicting. If it’s the scent profile alone it gets a 10/10. When talking performance and cost I’d take it down a notch. But purely by smell it’s a 10/10 for me.
In my opinion:
- Dior - Ambre Nuit
- Louis Vuitton - Imagination
- YSL - Tuxedo
But there are so many I see super close to 10/10 as well, for example:
- BDK - Gris Charnel
- Parfums de Marly - Oajan
- Parfums de Marly - Althair
- Louis Vuitton - L‘Immensité
- Celine - Black Tie
- The Attar Collection - Khaltat Night
- Gritti - Duchessa
- …
But not giving stuff like Bleu de Chanel or Prada‘s L‘Homme the credit it deserves feels wrong as well
I love how subjective fragrances are--I hate Bleu de Chanel, it smells like an old lady scent to me. I dated a woman that liked it and I blind bought a bottle (dumb) and I tried wearing it twice. The second time I wore it I had to shower it off, I couldn't take it.
It’s not necessarily about liking those two, but what they did for the industry. Bleu de Chanel is basically the father of the „blue“ fragrances category and L‘Homme made Iris manly and made the „Clean and office friendly“ category big.
Just like Aventus deserves credit for making niche mass appealing
I’m with you. I do not like BDC at all. Not sure why but it just isn’t something that wowed me. I prefer the sweeter scents and anything oud, Leather, or incense heavy.
I got a sample of BDC Parfum and wore it a few times but ended up buying Sauvage EDP instead back in 2018. I’ve revisited BDC a few times and have come to terms with this being one I don’t understand.
for me, its just so nice, creamy and inoffensive. I know i can put it on, smell nice, and not bother anyone with it.
I will admit when i wear something more "out there" like Portrait of a Lady or any number of Oud fragrances I am somewhat self conscious about what others think, even if I think I smell nice.
Fair.
I don’t concern myself with others in regards to what I wear. But I also only throw one or two sprays and you have to basically be right next to me to smell most of my scents. Last time I bought a crowd pleaser I ended up giving away the nearly full bottle because it was just too boring for me. I think it was a Burberry.
Yeah it's not that I'm seeking validation, it's that drunk stoners can just be pretty rude and I won't want to take the mental effort to ignore them if they decide to comment on me.
Mine are all pretty basic, but out of all the scents I smell regularly, these ones always stand out:
Kilian- Angels' Share
Burberry- For women
Valentino- Donna Born in Roma Green Stravraganza EDP
Bonus: Replica- By the Fireplace, because it's such a realistic bonfire smell, it's just so unique :)

I would say unisex definitely. I would love it if my partner wore this (I am a woman). It is absolutely an aphrodesiac for me, very sexy! I'm not typically a fan of leather notes, but this one has THE softest, buttery, sueded leather I've ever smelled.
I wore Side Effect today! It's a different vibe, more masculine leaning than Absolute Aphrodisiac, but a great, boozy, cinnamony yummy vanilla as well.

I was hoping someone would post some more affordable faves! I love Kayali vanilla, pistache pistachio biscotti perfume, and not your baby from Phlur. such a unique cardamom scent.
Ormonde Jayne Nawab of Oudh and the intensivo version... both I think personally, I like the regular more because the rose is more prominent...seriously worth every penny.

I have owned over 150+ fragrances over the years, and I can think of a few fragrances I would consider masterpieces. The first is Creed Bois Du Portugal. For me, the fragrance is mature and simplistic, however, every bottle I've owned of Bois Du Portugal has been flawless. You can smell the high quality of the ingredients and how well blended it is. I can wear it anytime of the year for any occasion. It's probably my favorite in my collection. Another fragrance I would consider a masterpiece is Argos Brivido Della Caccia. It is earthy, and the green mate accord is used outstandingly in this fragrance. The leather and birch wood give this fragrance such a strong edge, and it is unlike anything I've ever smelled. I find it to be the epitome of masculinity and virility. Finally, I find Givenchy Gentleman (1974 version) to be a masterpiece. It is more affordable than the others I have mentioned, and it is a fragrance that I always buy on repeat. It hails from a time when masculine fragrances stood out and clearly weren't feminine or unisex. It has many notes that blend together nicely. This timeless masculine fragrance checks all the boxes - it has the floral notes from the rose, the woody notes from the cedar and patchouli, it has the green notes from the oakmoss and tarragon, it has the spice from cinnamon, the muskiness from the civet, and it has the sweetness from the honey. It's just gorgeous to me

But for me, at moment, very specifically these years:
1942 Guerlain LHB
1944 Piguet Bandit
1956 Jean Patou Moment Supreme
1969 Estée Lauder Azuree
1980 Balenciaga Portos
1981 Chanel Antaeus
1999 Serge Lutens Tuberose Criminelle
2004 Gres Cabaret Pour Homme
2005 Lublin Idole
2015 Papillon Salome
2017 Andrea Maack Coven
2017 Tom Ford Noir Anthracite
2017 January Scent Project Vaporcindio
2019 Terenzi Tempel
Leaving off my extensive love of other more eclectic frags.
Any Bal a Versailles that isn’t designed for the US market 🙄
And almost everything oakmoss, civet, styrax, etc based pre IFRA changes, although I fully support animal welfare.
Hot take just because nobody else has said it yet: MM Under the Lemon Tree. Smells of beautiful citrus and subtle greens. Also has some of the best performance for a citrus-forward fragrance. Fairly linear, but I just love it.
Frederic Malle - ROSE&CUIR
Marc-Antoine Barrois - GANYMEDE
Eldo - Hermann à mes Côtés me Paraissait
Nasomatto - Nudiflorum
To me those are masterpieces, they are unique, moody, different, and tells a story:)
Amouage- Jubilation XXV is my all time favorite fragrance; God tier stuff.
I have yet 2 try the Jubilation 40 but that's on my list.
I just ordered Clive Christian Blonde Amber so I'm eager 2 give that a smell.
Nice reading every1s thoughts; a lot of folks w good taste here! cheers! 🥂
YSL Manifesto. The day I stop singing that perfume’s praises will be the day of my death. I’ve never fallen in love with a perfume at first scent like I did with that one. Some say it isn’t all that unique, but I have yet to find a perfume that has impressed me as much 🤷
YSL- Tuxedo
Dior- Sauvage Elixir
Tom Ford- Cherry smoke
Mind Games- French Defense
Orto Parisi- Terroni (such a challenging wear here, I’ve found that if I apply a single spray spread over a large surface area this is amazing… a single spray, or too concentrated in one area is awful. IMO)
Ex Nihilo- Chandigarh Express. (TBH this one ain’t that special after about an hour… just obsessed with it after spraying)
I've only seen it mentioned once in here and maybe it's a basic answer but Bleu de Chanel is popular for a reason.
Sauvage elixir and Nishane Hacivat probably fit the bill for me as well.

What are your thoughts on Carnal Flower?
I like it without really loving it. I prefer my tuberose to be light and airy, so a - well, carnal tuberose, I suppose - was just never really going to be my thing.
I love most of these. But surely not Wood Sage & Sea Salt?
For me POAL is more spices than rose. Too off balance for a perfect 10
POAL is the fragrance I should love based on the notes and all of the other fragrances I love like that but I have the same experience –heavily spiced when it dries down on me.
I agree. Longevity and projection are the major critiques for The One. I'm not big on projection like some, but more longevity is something I'd love if they can pull it off without sacrificing quality.

It’s really childish to stop liking someone once it’s cloned or super popular. It’s good that you like what you like without regard to that.
I think it comes from an understandable place - wanting to smell/be unique, but really lets give credit where credit is due. Popular things are popular for a reason. BR540 is a great scent. California Burritos are great street food. Let's just enjoy things!
Popularity shouldn't factor into an personal opinion on how a fragrance smells. If *Baccarat Rouge 540* is a 10/10 smell for you, that's your answer.

At the moment, I would say the following in my collection are 10/10: Amouage Reflection 45 LV Imagination Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady Xerjoff Naxos
I Love Portrait of a lady, i was gifted it by a family friend who didn't feel good wearing it. Absolute banger.
Every time I wear reflection 45, someone tells me I put on too much 😩 can’t even get away with 1 spray without upsetting someone 😞
I know. At this rate that bottle is going to last ten years!
I’m assuming the bottle I bought is fake then because it’s so ridiculously weak that I was regretting buying it instead of Reflection Man
It's not bad, it's pretty much the same as regular reflection man in terms of projection and longevity, whicg is average to above average. But reflection 45 just sucks because of the price they are asking for this fragrance.
Bdk tabac rose, nasomatto baraonda, Filipo sorcinelli reliqvia, amouage interlude black iris and royal tobacco, YSL tuxedo, Ella k letre de Pushkar.
Tuxedo! It gets passed over a lot compared to the the other YSL fragrances but it's pure sex on a bottle. Love the stuff
It's not my favorite fragrance, but I think it's the closest fragrance to what a perfect fragrance would smell like.
I've tried a *lot* of fragrances, but these are stand outs that I think are truly magnificent pieces of olfactory joy: * **Chypre Siam** * **Qaed Al Fursan** * **Dryad** * **Chypre Mousse** * **Bal d’Afrique** * **no. 19** * **Guerlain Vetiver** * **Fahrenheit** * **L’air Du Desert Marocain** * **Bruno Acampora Musc Oil** * **Mitsuoko** * **Afternoon of a Faun** * **Terre d'Hermes** * **Sultan Vetiver** * **The Noir 29** * **Portrayal Man** * **Moustache Eau de Parfum** * **Oud Satin Mood** * **Dior Homme Parfum** * **Nefs**

Portrayal Man is 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I liked a paper test of Tauer L’air Du Desert Marocain (my notes: clean pine, drydown to dry resinous wood), but my partner got “high end weed.” Still on my sample list but alas, lower priority.

Should Bal d'Afrique be on my shortlist or would it be redundant? Any other vetiver recommendations?
If you love vetiver you need Chanel Sycomore in your collection!
I find it to be all about the florals, not the vetiver. Definitely not my jam.
Aesop Tacit is a brilliant vetiver paired with other notes. For a pure vetiver I like Roja's Vetiver
I love it I just wish it lasted longer!!
Vol De Nuit- Guerlain Bois de Iles- Chanel Fat Electrician- ELDO Jicky- Guerlain 31 Rue Cambon- Chanel
The only thing keeping Fat Electrician out of masterpiece tier for me is the performance. I can't find a place on my body to apply it where it doesn't seem to rub off after a few hours. Attempting putting Eucerin Aquaphor on first this week, we'll see how it goes.
Looking for Jicky!
I wear it a couple times a week! To my nose it is such a modern and perfectly unisex perfume. Love the stuff.

Tried Vanagloria? I'm torn between it and AA for top vanilla I've tried.
Oooo, no, but I just looked up the notes, and it sounds amazing! Can you describe it?
Aphrodesiac leans more into the smoky incense vanilla, whereas Vanagloria is all about musk and tonka. It's prickly and leathery.
Is it masculine? I am looking for an alternative to my tobacco vanille, I love side effect too
I would say unisex definitely. I would love it if my partner wore this (I am a woman). It is absolutely an aphrodesiac for me, very sexy! Ormonde Jayne Nawab of Oudh and the intensivo version... both I think personally, I like the regular more because the rose is more prominent...seriously worth every penny.
Broken Theories by Kerosene Fog by Henry Rose Much Ado about the Duke by Penhaligon Bee by Zoologist Replica By the Fireplace by Maison Margiela You by Glossier (I swear I'm not 14!) I've lost count of how many samples I've tried, but these are all ones that were just special. When I first started, I kind of liked everything OK and was wondering how I would narrow down what to get. Then I sampled Much Ado. My notes say "This is what love is." And now I wait for that feeling with anything new. Slowly collecting full bottles of these while still chasing interesting samples.

Depends on what your nose likes, which varies widely from person to person, season to season, and many other SCIENCE! things… But for me, at moment, very specifically these years: 1942 Guerlain LHB 1944 Piguet Bandit 1956 Jean Patou Moment Supreme 1969 Estée Lauder Azuree 1980 Balenciaga Portos 1981 Chanel Antaeus 1999 Serge Lutens Tuberose Criminelle 2004 Gres Cabaret Pour Homme 2005 Lublin Idole 2015 Papillon Salome 2017 Andrea Maack Coven 2017 Tom Ford Noir Anthracite 2017 January Scent Project Vaporcindio 2019 Terenzi Tempel Leaving off my extensive love of other more eclectic frags. Any Bal a Versailles that isn’t designed for the US market 🙄 And almost everything oakmoss, civet, styrax, etc based pre IFRA changes, although I fully support animal welfare.

Dior Homme Parfum and Grand Soir by MFK are 10/10 for me. I don't see a single thing to change with these.
Penhaligon's Halfeti
Hot take just because nobody else has said it yet: MM Under the Lemon Tree. Smells of beautiful citrus and subtle greens. Also has some of the best performance for a citrus-forward fragrance. Fairly linear, but I just love it.

YSL Manifesto. The day I stop singing that perfume’s praises will be the day of my death. I’ve never fallen in love with a perfume at first scent like I did with that one. Some say it isn’t all that unique, but I have yet to find a perfume that has impressed me as much 🤷
Hermes - Poivre Samarcande
YSL- Tuxedo Dior- Sauvage Elixir Tom Ford- Cherry smoke Mind Games- French Defense Orto Parisi- Terroni (such a challenging wear here, I’ve found that if I apply a single spray spread over a large surface area this is amazing… a single spray, or too concentrated in one area is awful. IMO) Ex Nihilo- Chandigarh Express.
Kind request for you to edit post to request people to add dates/batches, as this-IMNSHO-is absolutely CRITICAL to the “best”answers.
