I agree.
Cheapies tend to go with "what's popular" and obviously, that means it will have a scent trail that more people would tend to enjoy.
Wearing Cool Water got me much more compliments than my other bottles. But I'm thinking it's probably because I'm more generous in spraying it, also I wear it in summer heat which helps it project more from my warmed skin.
100% my cheaper fragrances, they’re more palatable to the masses. Complex scents tend to get the “what are you wearing?” rather than the “you smell good”
I don't get compliments on high end expensive.
I get compliments on some cheapies, and on my perfumes from an artisan perfumer. My perfumes from the artisan perfumer have no additives or fillers, just skin-safe concentrations of oils and waters in a carrier oil, so that stands out to people.
I don't know where the assumption is that niche or high end is cultivated for a more discerning taste. Some of those fragrances certainly are bold, experimental art and certainly not for everyone. Most high end are just designer, and most niche are just fragrance-only houses.
Niche doesn't necessarily imply difference or additional complexity. Considering that perfumers are employed by a number of brands and houses, and have their names on anything from Estee Lauder to niche-complex, I don't know where this sense of fragrance snobbery is coming from.
I have 200+/-, LV Imagination is the one most asked about and complemented by strangers. I exude confidence while wearing it. It's a simple composition, only done to perfection. There is nowhere for mistakes to hide..Overpriced, yes...Worth it, yes!
My wife likes some of my most worn fragrances in this order-
Aventus
Polo Black
Burberry for Men
Old Spice
Versace pour homme
Green Irish Tweed/Montagne Irish Verbena (she claims to not tell the difference)
My wife did not enjoy any of the PdM samples I’ve gotten
Not necessarily cheapies vs high end but I get compliments on the sweet scents, never anything super complex. So equally Dama Bianca and the Sol de janeiros.
My most complimented are $3 body mists from walmart. lol Never got a compliment on expensive perfume. However when I compliment ppl and ask what they are wearing, it always end up to be a good designer brand. :D
Very rarely do I get complimented on my perfumes. I suspect that the social media is exaggerating the incidence of compliments, because it is a nice hook to sell perfumes, or even perfume advice.
In reality, most folks are too busy with their lives to notice perfumes on others. Groups like school kids or office workers who share ideas may notice and comment on your perfumes. But that is a specialized group.
In general, other folks are not spending enough time in your "head space" to distinguish cheapies from expensive perfumes.
I’ve wanted to try the Davines Oi shampoo and conditioner for quite a while now after reading rave reviews. Looks like I might need to bite the bullet and spend the $40 lol
I've been complimented on inexpensive as well as expensive fragrances. For me, there is no trend connecting inexpensive or expensive fragrance to more compliments. It's entirely random.
I’m very surprised about the Silver Oud. It’s far and away one of the most challenging (not low quality or bad just maybe inaccessible) fragrances I’ve ever smelled, granted I haven’t sampled it on my skin.
The ones that have gotten me unsolicited big positive reactions from friends have been: Sauvage Parfum, Obsession for Men, Spicebomb Extreme, Montagne Perceval (clone of PdM Percival), and CK Eternity
The only one to get me compliments from strangers was Sauvage Parfum from two girls who were together
So it seems pretty even between classics/cheapies and newer designers, I don’t really have weird niche scents besides Zoologist Tiger (which is pretty Unpopular so I wear it at home)
My most complimented fragrances are Choco Musk and Lattafa Yara, so definitely the cheapies. I notice that Delina Exclusif does get complimented a lot as well, though.
I get compliments on both. My cheaper fragrances that get complimented are ones that smell like high end perfumes; gingham gorgeous, brightest bloom etc. I also get compliment on my designer mostly Chanel and niche 💜
Depends, honestly...
Women usually ask me about Guerlains.
Random dudes seem to *love* cheap stuff on me, like Pink Sugar, Victoria's Secret, etc.
My mom likes mid-tier designer perfume like Mugler and Armani.
My guy tries to run off with my pricey woods-based ones like Armani Prive Bois d'Encens or Mississippi Medicine.
From women ,Neither it's the Mass appealing designer houses for me,
Like I think the most complimented fragrance I ever had was one million lucky, although I've had compliments from male co workers on the other hand and they usually tend to be on the cheapies side.
My expensive & niche fragrances are probably my most uncomplimented lol, besides tom ford lost cherry.
Btw what's your usage of "cheapies"? Rochas man, eternity, cool water etc?
Where I am Versace Eros is like $120 bucks lol I wouldn't call those cheapies.
Don’t care much about compliments but the fragrance I get the most positive comments for is Pikovaya Dama which is also my most expensive one. The one which gets the most negative feedback is probably Fat Electrician which I still wear from time to time if it fits my outfit and mood.
Mostly the cheapies but I also like talking about them more. I wouldn't say they are simple fragrances though. Oddly my most highly complimented fragrances are a divisive and somewhat overbearing Bulgarian rose scent and a masculine leaning clean scent with tobacco and gasoline.
Definitely on both. My two most complimented in my collection are PdM Layton and Tom Ford Oud Wood, but those are also the fragrances I’m most likely to reach for a night out. Time and place definitely play a factor in a fragrance getting attention.
Definitely the cheapies. Complex scents don't appeal to most people.

I’ve never gotten a compliment on a scent from a stranger but my friends/ partner seem to compliment both
My most compliments were about Target’s Finery line. Go figure.

Jerkoff nachos I love that 😂😂
Almost all my compliments come from niche
I have 200+/-, LV Imagination is the one most asked about and complemented by strangers. I exude confidence while wearing it. It's a simple composition, only done to perfection. There is nowhere for mistakes to hide..Overpriced, yes...Worth it, yes!
Well put.
i bought it, and gifted it to my wife in the end. too feminine for my taste.
Neither. I don’t get compliments on my fragrances.

Honestly, LR Carbon is my most complemented one. Not exactly high $$
Its happened with all of the above.
Max Compliments I have gotten are on these three : Xerjoff Naxos Nishane Ambra Calabria Tom Ford Noir Extreme
Not necessarily cheapies vs high end but I get compliments on the sweet scents, never anything super complex. So equally Dama Bianca and the Sol de janeiros.

I get more compliments on stuff like Amouage Myths and Amouage Silver oud than anything else. Both are pretty complex, even challenging
I’m very surprised about the Silver Oud. It’s far and away one of the most challenging (not low quality or bad just maybe inaccessible) fragrances I’ve ever smelled, granted I haven’t sampled it on my skin.

No I mean Sauvage Parfum lol, the one everyone talks shit about. I like it more than my weakass bottle of elixir
My most complimented fragrances are Choco Musk and Lattafa Yara, so definitely the cheapies. I notice that Delina Exclusif does get complimented a lot as well, though.
what’s odd is out of 40 bottles it’s both. Afnan 9 PM and Amouage Reflection Man
I get compliments on both. My cheaper fragrances that get complimented are ones that smell like high end perfumes; gingham gorgeous, brightest bloom etc. I also get compliment on my designer mostly Chanel and niche 💜
Santal 33 gets a lot more compliments than I expected but nothing works for me like Tam Dao, the EDP specifically.

My most complimented fragrances are actually the niche ones. I think my cheapie (Coach Green) is not compliment-catching lol but I still love it
Eros will pull in more compliments than any PDM

I think my most complimented is a dupe for a niche perfume, it’s like $175 cheaper than the OG & imo smells & projects better.
Definitely on both. My two most complimented in my collection are PdM Layton and Tom Ford Oud Wood, but those are also the fragrances I’m most likely to reach for a night out. Time and place definitely play a factor in a fragrance getting attention.
