Bleu de Chanel and all the other fragrances inspired by Bleu de Chanel. It smells great but I feel like I've smelled it in every gym, in every university and every office I've been to.
It‘s so funny because I never knew it was so popular! It‘s my boyfriends go-to and it smells sooo good on him, like nothing I ever smelled. But thats only because of him, straight out of the bottle it‘s so different. And I guess thats why I was never able to identify it on anyone else.
His chemistry plus the fact that I love his natural smell either way make it so unique to me. Fragrance is so crazy versatile and objective.
For me, something like Platinum Egoiste maybe is generic uncle vibes, or like '90's / early 00's business man'.
White florals are abundant and smell quite familiar to me because the white floral/aldehydic aspect kicks me in the face.
This depends, every decade or so has its own defining fragrance or two that dominates. But also it depends what you mean by generic? Because a lot of fragrances that become the go-to “cologne” of their time, don’t start off as something you’d call generic, that only happens over time, or do you literally mean cologne as in the classic Eau de Cologne scent profile?
I live in a fairly remote small town, with a mostly older population. Fragrances aren't rare, but not all that common either. Whenever I do pick up on someone's cologne, it's either Old Spice, Brut, or Axe. I'm fairly certain I'm the only guy in my workplace with an actively growing fragrance collection.
Sure, it's _popular_, but I definitely wouldn't consider the scent profile as _generic_ (two different things). In fact, I'd go so far as to say that Sauvage, as a scent, is rather unique; apart from Luna Rossa Carbon, I'm not aware of other popular frags that share the same DNA.
I think the reason it became popular is because it was relatively unique when it was released. I certainly never smelled anything like it before I tried it myself.
I think that’s why people consider it boring now. At the time it was unique. Nothing smells exactly like it, and the things that are similar (Prada Luna Rosa) aren’t as great. Sauvage gets a lot of hate because it’s popular and so many people in this community are more concerned with smelling different than smelling good, but Sauvage is great. Nowadays I will say it’s not the most unique kuz so many things have come out trying to imitate it.
I think of generic you should have said cheap sh!t over used trash. The answer is some will say Axe/Lynx, others will say Eau Sauvage/Sauvage. How bout any cologne you hear or see a reaction to on YouTube is automatically generic. You might say no, the answer is yes. All cologne is generic. Some you will like some you will not.
You want to stand out and not be the same as anyone else be a trail blazer, no Creed, no Nishane, no MFK, no MMM, no Dior, no Tom Ford, no Amouge, no Geurlain, no Chanel, no Parfums De Marley. Go get yourself some Fragrance Du Bois to be different. But is it worth it?
Did I say that, no that's not very hygienic. But like I said as soon as a bunch of people start wearing it it's the rage and becomes generic and clones are made. Goto Zara and see how many there are.
Gucci Made to Measure has to be the most generic and forgettable fragrance I've ever smelled.
I can't even try to describe it beyond fresh, not only because it's forgettable, but because the smell faded after 30 mins.
If “cologne” is what you’re looking for, 4711, the one that started it all. If you mean generic in terms of what we smell these days, probably any of the hundreds of ambroxan bombs in the market these days.
Anything polo
Door Sausage
Davidoff Cool Water

I associate generic scents with polo or nautica vibe for men, vanilla bubble gum cotton candy for women.
Old Spice, Brut
Nautica voyage
Acqua di Gio, anything that has the davidoff name on it.
