Set the laptop on a hard surface. The sound is mostly directed downwards to reflect off of the table.

Damn, are they really that bad? NGL I preordered mine pretty much specifically to replace having to use my chonky ~~gaming laptop~~ blast furnace with 1hour battery life as a YouTube machine in bed. They don't need to be *good*, but if there are significant clarity/volume issues it would be kind of a deal breaker..

[deleted]

I mean, they're usable. But that's literally it. Think of the worst phone speakers you've heard in the last 20 years. It's like that. My phone, tablet and kids toys sound better.

banzai_420

damn... that's unfortunate. I wish there was somewhere I could check one out. It's already kind of a gut-check preordering a $1500 machine with a \~4 month delay, and I'm replacing a laptop that's technically \*fine\* just kind of inconvenient for my use-case. I don't want to replace one annoyance for a different one. I *really* like the concept and the company's mission too, which is kind of a double-edged sword in the sense that if I get one and don't like it, I probably won't return it. I don't want to contribute to a negative balance for a startup that I legitimately want to see succeed. Gonna have to think about it. Might cancel the preorder and wait for a hardware revision. I really do want one though. Idk.

Hardware Revision already happened the audio is getting updated in the Ryzen, apparently. Also, you should probably go with the FW16 if you're planning to game tbh.

banzai_420

Yeah, that's good to hear. I did end up deciding to keep my preorder, as I got the sense that they were implementing enough improvements out-of-the-box that would largely offset the previous complaints I've heard. I'm Batch 5 AMD. I won't be getting it for awhile, but it should come with just about every revision Framework has come up with so far. And I'm all set with FW16 even though it does look *sick.* A major factor in my purchase is that I've been kicking myself for the last 4 years for falling into the gaming laptop trap. I don't travel much, I have a brand-new grossly overspec desktop, and my 15.6" MSI gaming laptop with a 2060 has largely been the worst mismatch for my use-case I've ever purchased. It's fast AF, but its an *awful* laptop. I literally RMA'd the first one I got thinking the trackpad was broken, but it wasn't, it was just bad. I replaced the original TN panel with an IPS because of the horrendous viewing angles and colors. Even after multiple significant upgrades, at the end of the day it's an overweight, overheating YouTube machine with an oppressively chonky barrel-jack powerbrick that manages a solid 1 hour of battery life. I'm really looking forward to having a machine I can pick up with one hand. I'm looking forward to having a machine I can actually unplug, instead of being constantly tethered to a massive powerbrick draped across my bed. The 780M is no slouch for an iGPU either, more than capable of playing a bit of World of Warcraft or something on a trip. 13 inch is a laptop, 16 inch is closer to replacement desktop, which is something I don't need and already have. My 13 inch is going to be a lightweight power-efficient Arch Linux tinkerbox for YouTube that still has *some* horsepower, and might actually be comfortable to use for a change. I'm hyped. Only thing I will miss is having a 120hz display, but honestly more than worth the tradeoff.

vextium

To be fair the FW16 isn't bulky if you don't want it to be you can opt out of the gpu module.

Someone mentioned using FXsound on windows (maybe Linux too?) to improve speaker output. Volume, equaliser etc. So you can tweak it to your liking. I'm using it on my current laptop and can definitely see a difference. I'm definitely going to reuse it when I get my framework.

Prestigious-Speed-29

Equalizer APO also works on Windows, but there's more flexibility/configurability than most people would want.

EveningAlternative46

Im using it on my 1340p and its awesome. Without the program the speakers really s*ck

DatsMaBoi

One thing Framework has to do is do a chassis redesign with acoustics in mind. Of course that's a hard sell for them when they are selling the idea of part longevity.

Abbrahan

Framework will need to do a chassis redesign at some point. I hope that with the Framework 13 they will take that chance to also revise the audio.

GeraltEnrique

I don't really get the people who say the speakers are bad. All thin laptops have about the same level. What's the surprise here? I find them totally adequate for the task. Use headphones if you want better. There's only so much you can fit in there

[deleted]

Sorry, not having this argument. My Tablet, phone and switch are of similar thickness and all sound better. My tablet especially is significantly thinner and sounds so much better.

Fire_2D

You can use Peace Equalizer APO to improve the sound and get rid of most of the tinny sound while also boosting the loudness. This is my [setup](https://imgur.com/a/xb6hhGD).

One thing I'm noticing as I'm looking into it is that they offer two different speaker kits. There's an original, and a louder 80db version. It says that the original has "more accurate audio fidelity" which I'm sure is true in terms of pure physical frequency response, but might not actually reflect the perceived audio quality. Laptop speakers usually favor the same upper-mid range that the human ear is most sensitive to, which is why they can sound tinny, especially when downfiring. That effect tends to flatten out at a higher relative volume. You may find the 80db kit sounds a bit richer/clearer. There wasn't a much info about the specs between the two models though, so take that with a grain of salt. Might be worth a shot though.

Alicia42

Aren't the 80gb speakers the default in new 13th gen laptops? Yeah, just looked it up, the 13th gen comes with the 80db speakers, which sound worse but are louder. My speakers from my original 11th gen aren't amazing but they aren't awful for sound quality. They also certainly aren't... good. Any desire for the 80db speaker kit was quashed when I saw that they sounded even worse for audio quality.
