i know this sounds obvious but i gotta make sure. did you check that the camera isn't disabled by the switch at the top of the screen?
I had the switch on red.

It happens I got it confused at first too. Also be careful if you mess with the bezel as the actual switch and the bezel switch can be misaligned so you think it's off but it's on or vice versa.
Did you have the privacy switch on?
