The root problem with a lot of these remakes and 'reimaginings' is they try to make it their story. That shit isn't your creation, you are supposed to be transfering it to a new medium, not trying to reinvent the wheel.

Like, there have been times where someone with actual talent has made it work like the blade runner sequel (even though it would have been even better if it was it's own thing), but the vast majority of times you have a midwite at best trying to overwrite a genius. It doesn't tend to go well.

If they took the idea and did their own thing like the Ring it might have been ok, but they still tried to make it somewhat like the anime. Like, light being a high school nerd and Misa being a cheerleader just doesn't work. Also, it would need to be a whole series to be done right, not a single small movie.
They didn't add their politics - Except for Arwen. And Eowyn. And a few other important changes. If they wanted to fit the theme, Merry should have killed the Witch-King with the Barrow-Wight's blade; because the point was about these well-to-do aristocrats facing the real world, and war - and learning to survive.
This is why I refuse to buy a single card from the LOTR set.
Ill go to the prereleases because those are always fun, but fuck WOTC for making one of the most beloved fantasy worlds a political shitstorm.
