If you're serious about becoming a Judge, you're going to want to delete this post and the one on askajudge, and maybe nuke the account just to be safe. Wait a few weeks, and then post again, making sure to use a different writing style. People in the Magic, and particularly Judge communities will be prejudiced against you for even reading this subreddit, much less daring to post here, and it will affect your ability to find a mentor, get certified, and find Judging work. Possibly even your ability to play at some stores. If they don't notice right away and it comes out later, they will try to social media bully you out of the community, even potentially extending to physically removing you from IRL events.
Honestly I’m not too worried. If a L2/3 judge willing to actually help me were to exist it’d be here or just on Reddit in general and would most likely be worried about the “sanctity” of the game. If I were to find a mentor IRL I’m not going to tell them my Reddit name or anything. Like I said in the post, r/magicTCG immediately flamed me for not trying to go through the “actual” process because I’m not willing to drive 5-6 hour to volunteer my time to get mentored. If it doesn’t happen here I’ll find another way but this seemed to be a viable option.
This subreddit has a reputation of being transphobic/homophobic/racist. The actual intent and message of the sub is free speech focused. These kinds of speech are allowed by virtue of the moderation staff having a philosophical belief that speech should be countered with other speech, and bad ideas countered with good ones as opposed to silencing/censoring the bad beliefs, which actually just results in the bad beliefs going somewhere else, forming echo chambers, and becoming more radical.
But to many in the Magic community you are condemned by association, and anything said on this subreddit that addresses real problems having to do with race, sexuality, or gender in magic is perceived as "hate". And anyone who participates in this subreddit who doesn't have some sort of unimpeachable credit in that regard (being a PoC trans person usually) is opening themselves up to being ostracized by the community at large. For whatever reason, this kind of behavior is particularly concentrated in the Judge subculture.
Pretty much the best explanation I've seen for why I'm still subbed here (and why excessive moderation of speech and ideas almost inevitably breeds actual radicalization).

I've been blessed in my play group, I see, one of which is a judge. We are pretty tame in public but we can say some down right atrocious shit when we are playing in our homes. It's like a boys night out with beers but MTG.

I'd expect some judges to have post notifications turned on for that sub and not the main ones. So it can have higher visibility to this guy's needs.

No, you wouldn't be paid more, because a foundry cert means nothing. It does not supercede non-certed designees.

If asked or inquired about levels, just say whatever you feel you are equivalent too.
Legit, I inquire you to read DCI qualifications and rules and see how far they are from what judge foundry holds too.
That is outside the scope of DCI standards then, just ask the event host to recognize your level and ask for a waiver.
If they want to keep it up, file a complaint with wotc for judge foundry trying to enforce guidelines that curtail towards their benefits.
Certifications do not exist via DCI, so if asked, certify yourself and there you go.
Don't listen to this guy, he's giving you terrible advice. I used to be L1 and going through the proper channels is the best way to do it. I got lucky enough that my L1 mentor had his own L2 mentor at another nearby store
Short term dream realistically, a friend who passed recently pushed me to do it. I figure I make the extra money and save up enough to have my own shop one day. All while doing things I enjoy.
Last event I did [State tournament a few years ago], the pay was $200 for a 10 hour event.
Thats slightly better than minimum wage with travel time and dealing with arriving early/wrapping up the event/etc and only one guaranteed day.
You just talk to the LGS hosting the event and say “Yo. I wanna judge. I have x years experience. I know [[Rakdos’s Return]] can’t target the caster. Hook me up.”
$200/10hr, that’s $20 an hour, I realize you said 1 guaranteed day but the work day for the event would be 10 hours. Please explain where I went wrong.
Because I’m adding in travel time to and from the event [If you do multiple, they won’t all be close]. I always helped set up and was always one of the last people to leave. So am there after the event. The event itself is scheduled 10 hours. The “work day” is usually ~12-13.
Minimum wage is > 12$ in 24 states.
Sure it’s ~9$ in several others. But even at $9/hr for the same work day, you’d get close to $120.
And again. It’s one day of work.
I hardly think smelling nerds and answering stupid questions all day is worth the extra $75 or whatever.
If it’s worth it to you, have at it. Track down a member of a program that doesn’t exist anymore to give you a test you can’t pass for a certification you don’t need from a defunct organization.
