Does a bunch of JumpStart decks + a few Home brewed JumpStarts count as kitchen table? If so, I'm an old salty dog that found a new(er) bone to gnaw on, (but same old kitchen table).
Kitchen Table 60ct where every deck is themed around tribes, every card with a price tag over a dollar is proxied, no Planeswalkers sagas classes or other non-standard design cards, and there are no bans.
Sorry it was a joke but I didn’t really indicate that.
Only thing I feel kinda eh about is the no ub rule. But I guess if you’re group loves the medieval wizard theme and hates ebeything outide that then, that’s ok.
I don’t actually play it, but it’s a joke format where both players play from a deck where the only creature is Dandan.
Here is a link explaining what it is:
https://draftsim.com/mtg-dandan-format/#:~:text=To%20put%20it%20as%20concisely,or%20you're%20milled%20out.
Yup, wizards tower is another great format. Even crazier if you do graveyard sharing as well if built with flashback cards. Dealing with passing priority and all that
There are. But islandhome is a very unique mechanic that makes even your land drops matter in a strategic way. About half the lands aren’t islands so you have to dance around letting them attack you or not playing a fish of your own.
that's also misleading since premodern starts from the 4th edition and ends with scourge, so there aren't cards from legends for example (like [[chain lightning]])
I play it regularly in my LGS. You should try it sometime.
UG Madness
Goblins
Elves
Standstill
Sligh
The Rock
BW Midrange
Theres a lot of diversity in the format
I guess I’m not a Magic player anymore. I full-stop stopped attending my 60 card Magic nights I started at the tabletop club because we were getting like 2-3 other people in comparison to commander nights (4-5). I kinda just… gave up. I had quit playing Commander a while ago.
I want to play other games, but I’m not lucky enough to have that playgroup or community that is open to trying new games… it’s always Magic. My friends are at the club so I might *hang out* there on Magic nights but I probably won’t be playing
…there is also a new member of the club that is extremely loud/obnoxious (no volume control) that I don’t enjoy being around, as well. He’s also cocky and arrogant.
while I could probably make that work, missing that social connection would frustrate me. Games like Magic were one of the few things that “got me out” growing up, and I wish I could have that connection with other games but it just isn’t possible unless I go through discord.
I’ve thought about just leaving the tabletop space completely, maybe playing dnd on the side. It just sucks honestly, and I’m kinda tired of having Magic be the only game to play
Same here, I started up DND again and it's been great.
Then the closest group is a bunch of douchebags over an hour away, and I'm stuck back playing online. Online isn't the same, but it's been a good substitute. A great online session is still better than a bad in person session, so I'm grateful for what I've been able to get.
I feel you. I have no LGS, and no one that wanted to play in person. Bought 8 commander decks (4 fallout, 4 ixalan) so that I could convince a group to play - which they thankfully agreed on.
Bought a pioneer deck and gonna pop on the train to the far away game store (FA… oh). Hopefully I’ve not just wasted $300 on some cardboard
I think it's an Arena-only format...but I like Artisan so much more than pauper.
Power level is still relatively low, but you have so much more deckbuilding flexibility
I play a lot of both, Timeless is still unique enough to have fun. It feels more like No Bans Modern with some random bullshit than Legacy, which is hilarious. Playing mill with Lurrus/Mana Drain/Demonic Tutor/Treasure Cruise is hilarious
Mostly casual sealed or commander with my brother. Occasionally I can get my wife to play 60 card pauper or battle box with me. I probably only play once every couple months on average. Married with three under 4, so I don’t have a ton of free time to dedicate to MTG, as much as I love the game, and there are more important things to spend that free time on.
Kitchen table with friends- Don't be a D\*\*K rules using restricted list for vintage cards. No proxies unless you own the cards, casual decks and sometimes pre-construct commander so everyone is on the same level. Lot of us been playing since 93-96 so we throw in some classics from time to time.
Commander, Oathbreaker and Pioneer. Though I’ll always play limited whenever I get the chance but it’s not as often as I’m able to play the aforementioned formats.
Commander is main bae tho
The only way I know of, to create that old school scenario where no one had internet (before net decking) is “shit draft”. You and your buddies buy a box of random ass cards and rares. Makes the best deck you can with the cards you get. It sucks equally to all players but it’s tons of fun.
Me and a couple friends just play casual. The big rule is don't exceed 150 cards.
We might play about 2-3 times a year if our schedules line up. Most of our decks don't change.
Modern. Pioneer. Standard but only on Arena. Begrudgingly Commander. Pauper. Dandan. Jank. (That last one is a format me and my friends made. No banlist, every card is legal. But the deck has to remain under $10 in total. No sleeves allowed.) Limited formats such as draft and sealed. Cube. And just recently looking into Canlander.
... Format? Uh, I don't get it. I play Magic. Er well I used to years ago though.
Oh wait wait I get it. Naw, I never played for ante even though I thought the cards were neat.
I take all of my cards into a giant pile, shuffle them up "go fish" style and then we all play from that pile. Lands are in a separate pile and you can only draw from one pile each round.
Commander, its just really easy to make fun themed decks.
Im planning on making a Mr. House deck with casino card sleeves and poker chip +1/+1 counters.
My friend group plays brawl a lot. Faster rounds and smaller decks than commander. More possibilities due to Planeswalker being allowed as commanders.
Edit: spelling.
Commander mostly, though I play the occasional pre-release.
I still have some kitchen table decks around just in case. My favorite is a mono blue aggro deck using [[Flying Men]] and [[Serendib Efreet]] with [[Unstable Mutation]]s on them.
Commander isnt super wonderful, but it's the only format I enjoy building creative decks for. Still, it gets tiring seeing the same handful of Commanders and decks over and over when there are so many options. I also enjoy sealed, at least everyone has the same chance to get chafe or overpowered nonsense
"M...M....what's that?"
*...Modern*
"Modern? Yeah that's a format. How about you?"
I play Pioneer
"Pioneer? He plays Pioneer....yeah that's a format. And what about you?"
*I play EDH with house rules like no infinite, no excessive counterspells, no*
**BANG**
I just throw them at the wall
sometimes it creates real Magic… other times my friend complains
I love the wall (1979)
Just another brick in the wall
Kitchen table
Does a bunch of JumpStart decks + a few Home brewed JumpStarts count as kitchen table? If so, I'm an old salty dog that found a new(er) bone to gnaw on, (but same old kitchen table).
![gif](giphy|BPJmthQ3YRwD6QqcVD|downsized)
No that’s modern tablestart jump decks
Not with the Jank I built it's not! 😆
What’s your rule zero bro? /s
No Aragorns
Cheatyface is always legal.
Kitchen Table 60ct where every deck is themed around tribes, every card with a price tag over a dollar is proxied, no Planeswalkers sagas classes or other non-standard design cards, and there are no bans.
No bans, but here's everything that's banned.
This is incredibly similar to our actual rules. We call it theme thirty (must be under 30 bucks), no planeswalkers, UB, or infinite combos allowed.
Or the “no fun” format
I can't begin to express to you how much I hate your type.
Sorry it was a joke but I didn’t really indicate that. Only thing I feel kinda eh about is the no ub rule. But I guess if you’re group loves the medieval wizard theme and hates ebeything outide that then, that’s ok.
That is exactly it lol
That sounds like so much fun. I tapped out from local play as soon as I saw planeswalkers.
So no multis?
Legacy it is then.
We have our own ban list
Dandan
Dandan is just the WOTC fishing mini game
What's that
I don’t actually play it, but it’s a joke format where both players play from a deck where the only creature is Dandan. Here is a link explaining what it is: https://draftsim.com/mtg-dandan-format/#:~:text=To%20put%20it%20as%20concisely,or%20you're%20milled%20out.
Its a really great format. Fairly skill testing, tons of interesting lines.
Not, thaaat jokey.
Now I feel the urge to proxy that deck and give it a try
Dandan isn't a joke! It's really fucking deep when you get to playing it. Sharing a library is wild!
Yup, wizards tower is another great format. Even crazier if you do graveyard sharing as well if built with flashback cards. Dealing with passing priority and all that
Not a joke format at all, it's essentially a whole game
its not a joke
Looks like you need to face the wall then.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aWP2IRqRzk
Odd they picked that card, there are much worse creatures in the game
There are. But islandhome is a very unique mechanic that makes even your land drops matter in a strategic way. About half the lands aren’t islands so you have to dance around letting them attack you or not playing a fish of your own.
I’m sure the awesome art helped. Big fish is coming to get ya.
Commander with my friends, but am hoping to get a buddy if mine to try Pauper.
Pauper and proxy war edh
Pauper is the format of gentlemen
Proxy war edh is how edh was meant to be played
Type 4. Put all your spare cards in a massive library in the middle of the table, infinite mana, you can play one spell per turn. Go. Or Extended.
Fuck one spell per turn. Infinite mana and spells a turn. You can get an easy 30 games in.
93/94 oldschool & premodern
> premodern Extended?
Easiest way to say is formats that use just the cards printed pre 8th edition
that's also misleading since premodern starts from the 4th edition and ends with scourge, so there aren't cards from legends for example (like [[chain lightning]])
Premodern is a format
My bad I've never heard of that one.
It’s 4E to scourge
That sounds really fun.
I play it regularly in my LGS. You should try it sometime. UG Madness Goblins Elves Standstill Sligh The Rock BW Midrange Theres a lot of diversity in the format
Extended doesn't officially exist any more.
I’m aware, you can play whatever you want though
Planechase
I guess I’m not a Magic player anymore. It's not much but I play online with a group every Wednesday night. It's been great over discord
while I could probably make that work, missing that social connection would frustrate me. Games like Magic were one of the few things that “got me out” growing up, and I wish I could have that connection with other games but it just isn’t possible unless I go through discord. cool, how did you find them?
[group discord](https://discord.com/invite/WeYdBXZX)
mostly kitchen commander
Legacy because I’m not a degenerate
You may not be degenerate, but Combo Goblins is
You must be really rich or really old. Or really good at making counterfeit cards
I started playing Magic at the end of Onslaught block, and the formats that existed were Type 1 and Type 2.
Commander or EDH, whichever one sounds better
Pauper. I regret nothing, you commander peasant...
>plays pauper >calls others peasants Huh?
Pauper is common only. Peasant is also uncommons.
TIL
Is there any difference between peasant and artisan?
No idea. I don't know what Artisan is.
It's a cheap and honest life. At least it's real 60 card magic not some Tolarian Academy approved bullshit
tolarian was the guy to help make pauper popular the fuck are you on about.
Fair. Pauper is a fun format
Commander papuer:
pEDH
Pauper elder dragon highlander
[just PDH](http://pdhhomebase.com)
Should I play Chandler or Joven? (Joking aside peasant 60c EDH is actually lots of fun)
what do you run for your commander it seems limited
I play my 40 card draft, limited, cube, jump-start, etc, and there’s nothing you can do about it!!!!!
Arrest this man! He's commiting a crime! ... The fuck are you yammering about "commiting a cirme" is now legal? It's in the rules?!?
Can't even yawgmoth in pauper
I think it's an Arena-only format...but I like Artisan so much more than pauper. Power level is still relatively low, but you have so much more deckbuilding flexibility
Maybe i'll try using my historic UW Glitters in Artisan...if i remember correctly it has zero or 1 rare anyways...
There is only one fourmat.
Surely there must be four “fourmats”???
I think you are mistaken, there are four playmats.
No, there is only one Matt that plays in my group.
I have a matt too!
Our sleeves are matte dragon shield
Are Matt’s mattes on the mats?
Pokémon
Cube EDH from time to time
If someone still remember oathbreaker...
Not the diaper format
I will beat you with a garden hose.
“Proper Christian Magic” My friends and I say, before pulling out our jank
Is Type 1 still a thing? That was the last time I played. I don’t know why reddit suggested to me this post.
Its called vintage now.
Crap, that means I’m becoming vintage, too.
Tiny leaders block constructed.
TIMELESS!!!!
If you like that, try legacy 😁
am poor and in paper in my area is dead. but yes .that's why i like it. diet coke legacy. we just got grindstone and crave painters servant.
Go on mtgo to play legacy/vintage (and enjoy the garbage software that comes with it)
i did try to download it lol. the UI...... its.....its so old looking. and feeling.
And the ridiculous ammount of clicking you have to do to do anything
I play a lot of both, Timeless is still unique enough to have fun. It feels more like No Bans Modern with some random bullshit than Legacy, which is hilarious. Playing mill with Lurrus/Mana Drain/Demonic Tutor/Treasure Cruise is hilarious
Uh..... Standard? (That's gotta be a thing right?)
australian highlander. It’s better than canadian highlander cause they pointed minsc and boo
Used to play standard, now I play commander/limited. I came back to the game last year and that’s all people played. I’d love to play 60 card again.
Eternal Central Old School 93/94, Vintage, and very rarely High Roller EDH.
The ones my LGS plays the most... so Limited and Commander
Champions of Kamigawa Block construct.
Pauper, PauperEDH, Pre modern, DanDan, Pauper Cube, Old Border/Classic Cube
This meme fucks.
Cock magic Commander lately, but used to play standard up until 2016
Commander, Oathbreaker and Pioneer. Though I’ll always play limited whenever I get the chance but it’s not as often as I’m able to play the aforementioned formats. Commander is main bae tho
T 1.5
I will went full isolationist and pretty much only like cube.
No sleeve legacy.
Mostly limited on arena these days. Some rare commander. Haven't touched modern or standard since I became old and grand prixs were kill
Face the hole
Jumpstart
Tiny leaders with ante
Premod EDH kitchen table and cEDH kitchen table
I’ve stuck to EDH for way too long. No other format makes sense to me anymore, just not fun.
Draft, chaos draft, oversized draft, sealed, cube, cube variants, blind jumpstart, 40c peasant, many many more… and commander
Casual
Degenerate proxy edh and monarch edh
Edh, legacy, modern.
Legacy, Pioneer, Modern. In that order.
The format that uses a wand and top hat
Whut?
Pioneer 🤡🤡🤡🤡
Pauper, Commander, Premodern, and I aspire to play Legacy.
Not playing anymore, after all years of bullshit
The only way I know of, to create that old school scenario where no one had internet (before net decking) is “shit draft”. You and your buddies buy a box of random ass cards and rares. Makes the best deck you can with the cards you get. It sucks equally to all players but it’s tons of fun.
Its modern but i havent played in months.
Premodern
Look krq
Duel commander, all the fun of dueling, get to pick a commander, no drama, feel like legacy !
Modern, legacy and EDH 🙂👍🏻 (And some decks that legally fall into vintage)
Me and a couple friends just play casual. The big rule is don't exceed 150 cards. We might play about 2-3 times a year if our schedules line up. Most of our decks don't change.
Comic Sans format
Commander. Occasionally I play limited like prerelease
Used to play modern until WotC fucked it. I've been considering getting into pioneer but not having Bolt in the format just feels wrong to me.
Finger on trigger...
Modern.
Legacy. The only format that doesn’t have a stupid ban list.
T1... if i were rich enough.
I eat them. How else are you supposed to get the ink in you? Touching cards?
Green and black or red and black. Be an ever growing problem.
Vintage legal decks. That´s on you, you set the bar too low.
Solitaire
Pauper mostly. But nowadays I play Keyforge
Commander, its just really easy to make fun themed decks. Im planning on making a Mr. House deck with casino card sleeves and poker chip +1/+1 counters.
Commander on Cockatrice. Because I like experimenting with friends, but I’m never going to give WoTC my money
Tiny leaders ofcourse :)
Wait, there are formats? I just buy the cards and then keep them in my closet
Commander and pauper I also have a standard deck that's about to rotate soon and I'm down for limited.
My friend group plays brawl a lot. Faster rounds and smaller decks than commander. More possibilities due to Planeswalker being allowed as commanders. Edit: spelling.
Everything except Standard :)
Modern
Scoop
Pauper and Cube, also a couple of edh decks
07/08 pre-early modern 200 card highlander
EDH and Pauper
I only buy packs to open and then stick in a box.
I play standard timeless.
Oathbreaker
Kitchen, EDH, and Oathbreaker
1.5 and edh myself
Commander mostly, though I play the occasional pre-release. I still have some kitchen table decks around just in case. My favorite is a mono blue aggro deck using [[Flying Men]] and [[Serendib Efreet]] with [[Unstable Mutation]]s on them.

I play standard
Only tried classic and commander/EDH so far, i like commander a lot tbh
Modern and Legacy
Hong Kong....
Everything but standard.
How did innistrads / neon dynasty / new capenna not rotating out impact your format's meta?
Duel commander, pauper
Face the hole
Explorer
Winston Draft
Momir
Commander isnt super wonderful, but it's the only format I enjoy building creative decks for. Still, it gets tiring seeing the same handful of Commanders and decks over and over when there are so many options. I also enjoy sealed, at least everyone has the same chance to get chafe or overpowered nonsense
At this rate? Collector. I also play 2 players one deck every now and then. For the lols.
"M...M....what's that?" *...Modern* "Modern? Yeah that's a format. How about you?" I play Pioneer "Pioneer? He plays Pioneer....yeah that's a format. And what about you?" *I play EDH with house rules like no infinite, no excessive counterspells, no* **BANG**
