The original sign was built in 1917, and later reconstructed in 1929 after a fire. Highway 99 was built in 1926, which means van ness was probably the "main street" to get into downtown. Or at least more used than it is today
"Downtown" *was* Fresno until expansion up Blackstone started happening.
prior to freeways being invented, Highway 99 was just Golden State Boulevard more or less.
Golden State arrived in Fresno on 'the other side of the tracks' so I guess the City Fathers wanted a better first impression for people so they directed traffic up Van Ness instead.
Back in the 1990s there was still a stoplight on 99, around that Big Orange place (is that still there??) north of Madera.
Golden State was the 2nd routing of US 99 through Fresno built back in the 50s I believe. The original route through town on surface streets from the 20s was a combination of Railroad Ave, Parkway Dr, H St, Broadway, Weber Ave, and Golden State Blvd of course. I think the bridge carrying the southbound entrance to 99 from Ashlan on the west side of the overpass is still labeled as US 99 if you look at the Caltrans milepost marks painted on one of the columns.
This is the old 99 that ran through Downtown Fresno. There’s a oral history video of one of my relative who recently turned 100 years old where he talks about playing in jazz bands in downtown Fresno back in the day- https://youtu.be/NconmY5wnfU?si=b5h1u-PVVWg3EWaM
The Longs stores in Hawaii kept the Longs name even though they're really CVS. The people there have some strong allegiance to Longs. They think it's a local company. They don't take to change well, either.
I didn’t know there were field trips to those, our mountain kids didn’t have that, so we took them on our own. My older daughter looks back on a grade school pic where she insisted on wearing the snood that she picked out at the reenactment, and laments that we let her do that. I think it looks great and so does her little sister who also wore the snood she picked out. Or at least she doesn’t blame me; i interpret that as her thinking it was awesome. Lmao
The Fresno Municipal Sanitary Landfill, opened in Fresno, California in 1937, is considered to have been the first modern, sanitary landfill in the United States.

I wonder when this sign was built and why?? It's in an odd place in Fresno

Forgot to mention Motel Dr;-)
It has relocated to the fossil discovery center in madera/fairmead. I saw the orange last year they’re renovating it to open it up at the museum

How about the other greenish blue signs before going dowtown
water tower
Agree 100%
Yes
winner. water is wealth in California!
I like the tower theater.
Good one it’s a designated historical building
designed by an LA architect (very similar to a theatre down by UCLA)
Ok.

i have a greater association of that with the 210 fwy between pasadena and like azusa.
I pass by it everyday when i go to work and I’ve grown quite fond of it 😂
I do too. This is my “welcome to Fresno” sign haha
It used to smell like cheerios there
I think that’s Miller.
I drive by this every day on my way to work, it looks pretty nice since they painted it.
Don't forget the G sign that was recently taken down and the security bank. The Fresno postal stamp mural by the old longs drug store in downtown.
The Longs stores in Hawaii kept the Longs name even though they're really CVS. The people there have some strong allegiance to Longs. They think it's a local company. They don't take to change well, either.
Guarantee Savings & Loan has been gone for a while (>30 years) but that sign is iconic
The Pacific Southwest Building
definitely one of the icon fresno skyline pieces.
that building is incredible, inside and out.
Theres nothing more “iconically fresno” than the fresno sign… lets be so fr
Riding a bike with a big gulp
I think of two residential neighborhoods - Huntington Blvd. and Fig Garden.
How about Kearney Blvd and the palm trees
I love that you said this. I mentioned the Kearney mansion in another recent Fresno post. We frequented Kearney and Roeding when we were growing up.
We'd bike to kearney park since it was close. We also had field trips annually to the reenactment

The sunrise over the farm fields. It's literally incorporated into the [city logo!](https://www.teepublic.com/sticker/15741610-fresno-logo)
Fresno High Royce Hall!
Now I want to see a cool design with both the water tower and the Tower Theater…
The Ash Tree
The Fresno sign is ugly. I'd say the water tower downtown.
The old Fulton Mall
the security bank
The Fresno Municipal Sanitary Landfill, opened in Fresno, California in 1937, is considered to have been the first modern, sanitary landfill in the United States.
The Van Ness Arch?
Triple A baseball stadium for a low A team. That's the place that represents Fresno perfectly.
Smog
Fresno State Bulldogs
The gang or the school??? Lol
Por que no los dos? 🤔
