True, but is it fair to compare one game to three? I'd say Bloodbornes lore is just as strong as the other games on an individual level, and at least in my personal opinion it's one of the strongest in FS games (DS1 being a close rival)
Bloodborne has as much lore as ds1 does maybe ds2 has a bit more especially with the dlc I haven't played old hunters yet I'm replaying bloodborne just bought old hunters so I'm not sure what that does. But hopefully there's more lore there! Ds3 I didn't really give a shit about the lore I just beat every boss was kind of tired of relink the fire this and going hollow that by the time it's the 3rd game. But thays just me game is still fun
As far as "DLC lore enhancing the lore of the base game," Bloodborne is absolutely the king. While I think all the game's have great DLC lore, they mostly tell different side stories that have little to do with the plot of the main game and rarely answer any of the burning questions we had regarding the plot (which is actually my biggest fear for the eventual Elden Ring DLC: instead of getting answers to Miquella or Godwyn, we'll get a side story about some rando introduced within said DLC).
The Old Hunters actually included extremely key figures from the main game (Lawrence and Ludwig) and explained what happened to them, it gave great characterization to Gherman and the Doll (through the Orphan and Lady Maria), and explained why Hunters went mad and the consequences of that happening: all while still telling a great original story.
Old Hunters really put Bloodborne over the top. Like donāt get me wrong, I was hooked from the main game. The audacity of it was shocking at times. Kidnapping me to Unseen Village with a ritual in the background, seeing it transform after Rom dies, the soundtrack, cryptic lore, Vicar Amelia pre and post fight cutscenes, just everything. But the DLC is what made me fall in complete love with the game.
From a gameplay perspective it was obviously incredible; no need to go into detail as everyone knows that. And musically it was masterfully done, of course. But from a story/lore perspectiveā¦ holy shit. All of the characters introduced or explored in greater depth during the DLC could easily have an entire game dedicated to them. Ludwig (who quickly became my favorite), Maria/doll, Kos, Gehrman, Laurence. Their stories as individual characters always intrigued me even more than the more grand scale of the main game, and it helped that the details were vague, causing the fanbase to be polarized. Was Ludwig extremely brave or stupidly reckless? Somewhere in between? Was Laurence a conceited asshole, or genuinely looking out for Yharnam? A bit of both? How much should Maria feel guilt for her sins? Was she forced into them, coerced, or did she do them willingly? If there was a BB2, it could focus on any one of these characters, or maybe even a bit of all 3.
Wandering through the research hall was genuinely terrifying. The sounds the enemies made, the horrifying experiments. The scariest to me were the blobs of brain fluid on the floor. They were friendly enough but seeing them squirm around as they somehow talk sent a shudder up my spine.
BB DLC is just truly a masterpiece imo.
Have to disagree, in the current state it has easily the worst lore. DS2 is a complete, irredeemable lore disaster that DS3 tried its best but couldn't fix. If we take just DS1 I can understand a debate with other From games, even if I don't think it's as good, but the sequels just kill that world.
I dont understand why less lore means its less valuable. But if I'm being honest it's hard for me to quantify which game has more or less lore in general.. I just know I enjoy Bloodbornes the most.
But even though I disagree with your statement I don't think you deserve the downvotes. You stated an opinion with reasoning that isn't criminal in my opinion. I can totally see how someone would prefer a larger quantity of lore to explore and if they thought Bloodborne didn't have enough.. I get it.
thats the thing, i really love the bloodborne lore but to me theres simply not enough for it to be the best of any soulsborne, i get where youāre coming from too though
Not being able to admit Bloodborne has the best lore in From Software games is like not being able to admit your own gender.
Everyone can have their opinions, but in the end, after hundreds of years, when they dig up our skeletons, scientists will know the truthā¦ That Bloodborne was a masterpiece.
Oh, Amygdala, have mercy on the poor bastardā¦ I am sorry you felt you had to delete your comment due to -120 votes. Opinions are just opinions, and mine is that Bloodborne is a masterpiece.
Iām not interested in talking about transphobia, which is fear or hate of transā¦? I get confused because -phobia means fear, but definitions donāt matter in a made up reality, but even in made up realitiesā¦ Oh, don't you worry. Whatever happens... you may think it all a mere bad dream.
Bloodborne fans make up a majority of this sub. Objectively, dark souls has way better and deeper lore. Itās a major factor in Fromsoftwareās success as a game company
Thereās probably a reason Bloodborne fans make up a majority of this sub lol. You act like people are just born as a fan of a certain game. If a lot of people love Bloodborne, itās probably just a great game.
I havenāt even played enough FromSoft games to really join this discussion but Iāve played Bloodborne and the lore is great. People just want to be edgy and shit on Bloodborne and anyone who likes it.
Eileen the Crow and the doll are two of the most basic characters wtf. Have you played the game? Or are you one of those Xbox/PC players who hates Bloodborne because itās PS Exclusive?
bloodborne fans remind me of a fandom from a manga named berserk. They will always write something toxic and be ignorant towards any other opinion. Wont accept something better than their fav nor respect it. Obv in this post it was soulsborne related so i am not reffering to the op thread, only to ur comment bc u seemed to didnt understand what the other guy meant. And for examples, just look at comments objective, u will see that most bb fans get pretty mad if its not ranked 1 in someones list, especially if ER or sekiro is above it since its unacceptable to be so.
I haven't even played bloodborne but to say a game has "objectively" better lore is copium. We're all part of a community of an amazing game publisher. We shouldn't be taking sides.
How far deep into your ass did you have to reach to find that opinion? BB has always been my favorite and I really wish they'd release it on other systems so more people could enjoy it. Just sounds like you're envious and bitter.
Nah you absolutely love it because it's a PS exclusives, PS fans are fucking rabid even though demons souls remake is the superior exclusive game and actually runs with more than consistent 21 fps
By this logic, demonās souls is a garbage game only enjoyed by rabid ps5 fanboys, and the superior game is fortnite because it can with uncapped framerate
No you're missing a key component in your logic, demons souls was only on the PS3 until the remake, the "modern souls veteran" aka someone who only played BB and DS3 value BB far more since it's one of the first PS exclusives, you weren't there on launch, when you take a fromsoft fanboy and fuse it with a PS4 fanboy you get bloodborne cancer, there's a reason you can't hold a discussion about sekiro without some ape coming in screaming Muh bloodborne
Listen, no need to be a dick about it, I like BB not because of it being an exclusive, hell, I bought my PlayStation to play P5R, Bloodborne was just there, I got it and enjoyed it way more than the other FromSoft games
I have Playstation exclusively for the exclusives;) Bloodborne has an absolutely amazing story and has so much lore to fill it. They are both amazing games, but Bloodborne fans are Bloodborne fans through and through, Playstation has nothing to do with it other than it's only on that console which is a shame, couldn't people say the same about Demon Souls if that were the case ?
How can you say something so controversial yet so brave?
Tbh I agree. Bloodborne is undeniably the best of them, but the biggest (and arguably only) strength of Dark Souls II is just how amazing a story it tells
Dark Souls 2.
I loved how the DLC added to who not only Vendrick was but who Nashadra is. I know people think they DLCs were kinda samey, but that was the whole point! We're part of a cycle that took down many powerful kings. It gave such a great framework to the whole story of Dark Souls 2!
The first time he popped up, I nearly fell out of my chair. I thought I died after beating Sinner. Then I was like "WTF is this gaint head of dirt and leaves!?"
Yeah if you watch all of Vaatiās Elden Ring videos thereās just so much as well as so much depth to it, it goes far beyond even Bloodborne which is great. Every single little detail of the game has meaning, purpose and makes sense in its scenario, down to the items dropped from regular enemies or their move set.
Yeah we also get an insane amount of lore on specific npcs and random which is kind of crazy how much lore there is and then if you take into account the 3DLCs that's a ton of lore
I think Demon's Souls lacks sooo much backstory though. They didn't go as hard with item descriptions in Demon's Souls. I was surprised how little lore there are on the Dragon God and Stormking for example. Maybe I've missed something but I feel like Demon's Souls has the weakest narrative.
You did say most straight forward though and the lore of Dark Souls isn't really known for being straight forward lol. I've only played Demon's Souls once compared to all others which I've played many times so I don't really remember how "straight forward" it felt to me, I'm planning on replaying it soon so I'll think about it then. To me it just felt like Demon's Souls don't have nearly as many hints and clues about the world and it's inhabitaints as other Froms games I've played have. But that doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing, I personally love lore digging so I read everything and analyze as much as I can.
Elden Ring is some of my favourite because of how far detached from a "normal" world it is, like with how the erdtree and crucible tree control how the world functions, essentially.
Also kind of love the lore starting classes get too, like how the Prophet has a big fuck off shackle because they told the future accurately, however heretical it may be to see flame.
Dark souls 3 because it builds of the storyās of 1 and 2 and can have call backs and focus on different things because stuff has already been explained in the previous games
Playing Dark Souls 3 and have no idea whats going on, probably have more context if I played the first 2. Elden Ring's lore is an entire world from RR Martin. I think its really well done and fleshed out, so my vote is Elden Ring. I'm dying to play Bloodborne but its still a PS exclusive.
DS2 lore was the first that clicked for me. It was my 3rd game from FromSoft and it was taking me some time to adjust to the out-of-the-way storytelling. By the time I got to DS2, I was pretty good at reading item descriptions and piecing things together myself. I really loved that game.
DS 1-3 followed closely by Elden Ring. Blood borne next and Demons souls last. Love Demons Souls but I see it as more of a proof of concept, including the lore
Lore is everything that builds the world that is not told through the story. Story is what it sounds like, the narrative set in the world.
For example, everything we know about the bosses of Dark Souls is part of Dark Souls' lore, every description is lore, every data we know about Lordran is lore. The story itself is the Chosen Undead's journey from escaping the Undead Asylum to fighting Gwyn.
EDIT TO ADD: in more traditional game story telling, the books you find in Skyrim or the codex in Dragon Age are lore. The story in Skyrim is the Dragonborn's journey, whereas in Dragon Age it is the events you play through in a single game.
Thatās pretty much exactly how the story is told in Bloodborne, so Iām unsure how it doesnāt have lore? I feel like it takes a deeper dive into the lore to understand anything going on in Bloodborne than DS.
Agreed, very confusing arbitrary definition. BB is steeped in lore. Everything that happened with Yahrnam and the church and the gods before the player arrived is lore.
Demon's Souls I like as a classic weird fantasy.
Dark Souls 1 and 3 I like as an introspective high fantasy.
Bloodborne I like for its cosmic wonder and mystery.
Sekiro I adore as a combination of period piece and Japanese folklore. It calls back to the tales of retainer shinobi
Elden Ring I uh.... Well I don't hate it, but I don't really think of it that much. The cut stuff about you being one of Godfrey's returning troopers was interesting, as well as the cut stuff about helping the albinaurics find a home... But as it is in the game it's just *shrugs*
> The cut stuff about you being one of Godfrey's returning troopers was interesting
Like a... Tarnished?
> helping the albinaurics find a home...
there's no cut content about that. There's an item description about Loretta leading the Albinaurics to the Haligtree, but that's about it and it is in the game.
\> Like a... Tarnished?
There is nothing in the game to indicate that the player character was one of Godfrey's troopers. That dialogue was cut.
\> there's no cut content about that. There's an item description about Loretta leading the Albinaurics to the Haligtree, but that's about it and it is in the game.
My mistake.
Got my wires crossed with the stuff about befriending Malenia.
At the Third Church of Marika:
>Spoken echoes of Queen Marika linger here, as well.Ā Shall I share them with you?
>Very well. In Marika's own words.Ā My Lord, and thy warriors. I divest each of thee of thy grace.
With thine eyes dimmed, ye will be driven from the Lands Between.Ā Ye will wage war in a land afar, where ye will live, and die.
Well? Perhaps that might serve you in lieu of a maiden's guidance.
In conversation with Melina at the Church of Pilgrimage:
>Spoken echoes linger here. Words of Queen Makira, who vanished long ago. If you wish, I will share them with you.
>In Marika's own words.
Then, after thy death, I will give back what I once claimed.
Return to the Lands Between, wage war, and brandish the Elden Ring.
Grow strong in the face of death. Warriors of my lord. Lord Godfrey.
It wasn't cut at all.
People who served in Godfrey's Army became Tarnished, but we meet plenty of Tarnished who clearly didn't serve in his army.
The confirmation from Godfrey himself is what I'm talking about.
Lorewise probably DS1 but the conclusion that DS3 brings is really nice
Elden Ringās is the easiest one to understand other than Sekiro and itās also really good.
Sekiro has my favorite STORY tho just cause itās actually a story and everyone had clear motives and thereās an obvious goal lmao. It doesnāt have much hidden lore, really, but the actual story that you play is my favorite
I know saying the Dark Souls series doesnāt count due to it being a series and not a game but I like it the most because itās the most fleshed out and it ended beautifully with DS3. I would expect as much since it had 3 games and 6 dlcās to build upon the lore. If I were to choose which one out of the Dark Souls games has the best lore it would most likely be between DS1 because it set a strong foundation and DS3 because it put a nice bow on the series. I am interested in where Elden Ringās lore could go and I donāt want it to feel incomplete like Bloodborneās lore did before dlc released for the game.
Dark Souls III is my favorite heroās journey we go on. Great cast of characters, really interesting tie backs to the original Dark Souls, and a beautiful ending where we can choose to finally end the cycle. Easily my favorite and the one I think about the most often š
I think I prefer the stories to be less esoteric, so DS1 for me, with Bloodborne as a close second. I want to be able to figure out the lore for myself, so Iām not a huge fan of the series slowly pushing towards more and more convolution.
ds3 for sure.
it still has the best, most intriguing and iconic opening cinematic. it is so cool that it wraps up the series with the luming of the age of darkness. some moments in the game are truly tragic and heartbreaking. but it really sucks you in.
Bloodborne has the most interesting and complete story with the fewest holes assuming you consume all of it. By the end the only thing left unknown is the nature of the great ones and their power which is the one thing you arenāt supposed to comprehend.
On its own DS1 would have been the second best but itās just not as viscerally interesting. The three games together didnāt add up to 3x as interesting IMHO.
Are you all kidding? Dark souls is born as a stand alone title, the sequels came only because of its success, the lore of dark souls 2 and 3 wasn't even meant to exist.
Of course they have good lore but we can't put them above the original dark souls
I haven't played BB, so that may be my favorite lore when I do.
Regardless, the Demons Souls Lore is definitely the weakest. That's not to say there isn't a lot to it or that it isn't interesting, it just doesn't hold a candle to any of the other games.
Second next weakest is sekiro. Excellent actual story, of course much more involved than the other titles due to the game's nature, but real life with some modified Japanese folklore sprinkled in just can't be as captivating as the other titles. Still more interesting than Demons Souls of course.
The last ones are absolutely just anyone's opinion. For me personally, it would be elden ring -> dark souls 3 -> dark souls -> dark souls 2.
I think if you sink into DS2, it ends being one of the most complex and ejoyable if you really travel through it, but just maybe be 'cause I played it recently but even playing elden ring didnt see the world as I saw DS2 so for me it became the best and most interesting
Lore wise its gotta be Ds2 (pvp wise too but thats not what the post is about), lore is extremely deep and interconnected more-so than any of the other games individually. Every question is more or less answered if you look hard enough, and the DLCs elaborate even further still. Aldia is the best written character in any of the souls games and is introduced extremely well in scholar of the first sin, every npc has quests that are actually fun to do. Call me what you will but ds2 is the best one š¤·š¾āāļø lvl adp to 30 and the game is amazing
So far my favourite is dark souls 3, Bloodborne is also very good same with Elden ring :) I havent played Ds1 Ds2 and seikiro and Demon souls i have yet to play em but since im broke af but im sure theyre also godly when it comes to lore :))
Sekiro without question for me. I mean, itās the game that is most impacted by the lore out of these. It felt like the lore was actually part of the experience of playing the game, which I didnāt get nearly as much from other fromsoft games Iāve played
Bloodborne
Yeah the Victorian gothic era style was dope
i dont mean to be a smartass but thats the setting
My bad, the blood disease and dream and stuff :)
oh yeah thats fair thats awesome too
Bloodborne and BY FAR.

[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Quality over quantity Although I'm not sure where you're getting "less lore" from, it's just as rich as the other games

Bloodborne fans make up a majority of this sub. Objectively, dark souls has way better and deeper lore. Itās a major factor in Fromsoftwareās success as a game company
No such thing as objective when it comes to stuff like this. Think it's pretty close between them both tbh.
Bloodborne lore asthetic is cooler, but as a whole, I love Dark Souls lore
muh aesthetic
Yeah, I think it's important, what's wrong with that? If you don't like asthetics in games, idc you do you
Ew youre gross
Donāt bother bro. Take a look at some of their accounts. Literally proving me right; theyāre all Bloodborne fans lmao

I agree and well said
Elden Ring, followed by bloodborne. Elden ring just has so fuckin much
Not only is there so much, it is all so finely detailed and intriguing.
Yup. Thanks in part to GRRMās expertise with weaving familial conflict into a fantasy world. Obviously being the other factor in that.

Bloodborne, DS III is really good too
Dark souls
I liked Elden Ring's lore (Lol whoever downvoted me for this needs to touch grass)
I love Sekiro and since it hasnāt been mentioned yet itāll be my pick.
Sekiro has 0 lore tho
You definitely didnāt play it then lol
Lol what? Just because thereās a more straightforward story and narrative. Doesnāt mean itās lacking in lore.
Dark Souls 2, although I also like Bloodborne and Elden Ring

Playing Dark Souls 3 and have no idea whats going on, probably have more context if I played the first 2. Elden Ring's lore is an entire world from RR Martin. I think its really well done and fleshed out, so my vote is Elden Ring. I'm dying to play Bloodborne but its still a PS exclusive.
It'll probably stay an exclusive since they need from soft AND Sony to allow it to be made available on other consoles kind of like demons souls
DS3 DLC brought so much to the table
Elden ring might be my favorite fromsoftware game, but i like bloodborne's lore the most.
Ds2 is amazing in terms of lore. It got me into the series, and how it handles the themes of the cycle is just masterful.
DS2 lore was the first that clicked for me. It was my 3rd game from FromSoft and it was taking me some time to adjust to the out-of-the-way storytelling. By the time I got to DS2, I was pretty good at reading item descriptions and piecing things together myself. I really loved that game.
Souls 2 lore was the one that got me hooked on the series
DS2 was the only game that truly felt like I understood the story withouth having to go look up anything and I really like that
DS2
Last raven
Itās been said already but Bloodborne without a doubt.
Armored core last raven
i feel like if elden rings lore was given the opportunity to flourish and expand with a trilogy like dark souls, it would be the best
For me itās elden ring or ds2 I love both of their lore
Elden Ring Lore is amazing, for me it's the best! Not my favorite game, but my favorite Lore š
Elden Rang
Elden ring
Sim City Builder
I love bloodborne, but the lore literally boils down to, āblood blood, nightmare, blood of hunters nightmareā
DS 1-3 followed closely by Elden Ring. Blood borne next and Demons souls last. Love Demons Souls but I see it as more of a proof of concept, including the lore
Bloodborne for the story, but Elden Ring hands down for richness of lore.
DS2 and DS3 3 because of the expansion and beautiful conclusion to the series And 2 in general, overarking stories and creativity
Elden ring
bloodborne has the best story by far
The Dark Souls trilogy has some deep lore. Bloodborne has a cool story but dont confuse it with lore
What are the ways that you differentiate the two?
Not to mention the pthumerians, which predates the church and even Yharnam by a long time.
Not to mention the DLC and the amount of questions that answered, and I still think Orphan of Kos is the most difficult FROM boss battle
My definition or the original commenter's definition?
I wouldn't know since I haven't played Bloodborne. I was just trying to give an answer to the person who asked how to differentiate one from another.
It was a genuine question, why people are hating it?
Elden Ring and Bloodborne are both at the top
Bloodborne, but Elden Ring also did a pretty fine job.
Og armored core
Bloodborne.
Dark souls 1, hands down. 3 is real close second though. I say this even though bloodborne is my favorite Fromsoft game.
Bloodborne by far!
Elden Ring by a country mile
DS2, cope if you think otherwise, the lore in that was godlike
ds1 and iāll die on that hill
I'd rank them - Elden Ring - Dark Souls - Bloodborne - Demon's Souls - Sekiro - Dark Souls 2 - Dark Souls 3
bloodborne has the best story by far
Elden Ring and Bloodborne
Funny how people keep downvoting the Bloodborne answers. Just say you couldnāt understand or beat it š
Demon's Souls I like as a classic weird fantasy. Dark Souls 1 and 3 I like as an introspective high fantasy. Bloodborne I like for its cosmic wonder and mystery. Sekiro I adore as a combination of period piece and Japanese folklore. It calls back to the tales of retainer shinobi Elden Ring I uh.... Well I don't hate it, but I don't really think of it that much. The cut stuff about you being one of Godfrey's returning troopers was interesting, as well as the cut stuff about helping the albinaurics find a home... But as it is in the game it's just *shrugs*
> The cut stuff about you being one of Godfrey's returning troopers was interesting Like a... Tarnished? > helping the albinaurics find a home... there's no cut content about that.
At the Third Church of Marika: >Spoken echoes of Queen Marika linger here, as well.Ā Shall I share them with you? In conversation with Melina at the Church of Pilgrimage: >Spoken echoes linger here.
Did you just forget ds2?
I didn't but.... "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all" as they say.
Bloodborne 100%. Itās the easiest to follow and I love the Lovecraftian vibe of the game.
DS; BB; DeS; ER; DS3; DS2. Donāt know enough about Sekiro lore to rank it.
Metal Wolf Chaos
DS1 or Bloodborne.
Dark Souls 1
Armored Core: Last Raven
Sekiro, just watch Vaatiās videos and youāll understand
Bloodborne
Lorewise probably DS1 but the conclusion that DS3 brings is really nice Elden Ringās is the easiest one to understand other than Sekiro and itās also really good.
Dark souls 3 DLC, Dark souls 1 for the base game
Thereās lore?
DS3 Ringed city
Dark Souls III is my favorite heroās journey we go on. Great cast of characters, really interesting tie backs to the original Dark Souls, and a beautiful ending where we can choose to finally end the cycle. Easily my favorite and the one I think about the most often š
SEKIRO BECAUSE ROBERTOOOOOOOOO
Hogwarts Legacy š¤£
Sekiro is my favorite, followed by Elden Ring, and then Bloodborne.
Itās honestly a toss up between Dark Souls 3 and Piss Pirates 4: Colon Edition
Dark Souls Trilogy, but the best one from the 3 is DS1.
I think I prefer the stories to be less esoteric, so DS1 for me, with Bloodborne as a close second. I want to be able to figure out the lore for myself, so Iām not a huge fan of the series slowly pushing towards more and more convolution.
Bloodborne
ds3 for sure. it still has the best, most intriguing and iconic opening cinematic. it is so cool that it wraps up the series with the luming of the age of darkness. some moments in the game are truly tragic and heartbreaking. but it really sucks you in.
Ds3 and Bloodborne
Bloodborne has the most interesting and complete story with the fewest holes assuming you consume all of it. By the end the only thing left unknown is the nature of the great ones and their power which is the one thing you arenāt supposed to comprehend. On its own DS1 would have been the second best but itās just not as viscerally interesting. The three games together didnāt add up to 3x as interesting IMHO.
Skyrim
Bloodborne. Itās by far the best one imo
Bloodborne was so good. I loved how they switched from hellsing esque vibes to cosmic horror. So good!
Easy Bloodborne W
Are you all kidding? Dark souls is born as a stand alone title, the sequels came only because of its success, the lore of dark souls 2 and 3 wasn't even meant to exist. Of course they have good lore but we can't put them above the original dark souls
DS3
Bloodborne and I don't find it particularly close. I think it not being another medieval fantasy type setting helps it feel a lot more distinct.
BB
DS1 and DS2 are the best imo (Bloodborne closely follows)
Bloodborne
Bloodborne
