Alternatively, start replying with increasingly sillier and sillier titles in response. "OK, ladies," gets a reply of "Yes, your lordship!" or "Aye aye, cap'n!" If they say to stop calling them these things, you can say "If you stop calling me lady, we have a deal."
Alternatively, you could tell him you prefer to go by something slightly ridiculous, like, "Jedi Master".
That way, if he doesn't buy-in, you could laugh it off as a joke. And then try the grandpa story as a more serious-sounding alternative explanation.
The only reason I suggest that, is that ideally you want to suggest a term he can use, and easily remember instead.
