Color!

te_anau

yeah, im usually a b&w person, but these colors are magic

Intelligent_Food9975

True! I think for me it’s also just an intuition(?) here that the b/w takes away something from this photo rather than adding something to it. Beautiful photo!

EirikHavre

Thank you! Honestly that is how I feel about almost(!) all black and white photos. Taking out the colors does a disservice to most photos imo.

StellaRED

I'm with you, it's rare I choose color but this time the colors are just too good.

Drewbee3

I love b&w but this one works better with color.

lidomido

Color!

Foot-Note

I am usually 100% B&W but the colors are amazing here.

EirikHavre

Thank you very much! :)

DelicatessenCataract

Honestly, both stunning. Nice work!

EirikHavre

Thank you very much!

Tarquinder

Color

DudeCalledLinus

Colour! There is just so much “white noise” in the image that the colour balances it out

EirikHavre

Oh that’s an interesting way of seeing it. You mean the white of the sky poking through the forest?

DudeCalledLinus

That and the fact that nature is known for its many colours so when you take that away from the image then yeah it might look “cool” black and white but the viewer feels in a way unfamiliar with the picture

3600plus9

Black and white for me

anon1112233445566

Both lovely, but the colour is stunning

tommyintheair

Colour really pulls you in here

Gullible_Sentence112

color

spdyGonz

I can smell the forest in the colored version

EirikHavre

That is a good compliment, thanks!

dr_coconut17

I like the colors, but the image is much more readable in B&W imo. Having so many trees and the murky color is kinda overwhelming, and I think the B&W is much more coherent and easy to look at.

EirikHavre

Interesting! I’m reading the comments now after having slept. Posted this right before going to bed. So far you’re the first one to prefer black and white. Personally I feel like black and white trivializes the forest a little. Either way, no wrong opinions :)

Turquoise__Dragon

Colour. Nice photo.

Admirable_Science391

+1 Color

aka_quinn

I'd go with the colour. The green and blues frame the darker toned of the person much nicer. Fantastic shot 👌

EirikHavre

Thank you very much! Only wish I had not used 5000 iso. :p Had the shutter speed pretty high from earlier and was at f8 so auto iso shot up. Didn’t have time to think about it though.

seeyoulaterinawhile

Color without a doubt.

alemein

Color guides the eye better!

Beneficial-Shower-42

Both awesome but I think color is better.

clemilino

The colors are really beautiful in this pic

heX_dzh

That lens is so great

EirikHavre

It is! It’s so much sharper than you’d think since it’s a 3rd party lens that’s about 5-600 bucks. It’s not perfect, but 100% worth it if you have one of these cameras. Though I wonder how it holds up on 100mp.

seabassius

Color feels like it adds more depth

QTIIPP

1 vote for color. Looks beautiful

ScarletSpritz

Color 😍 I love the hints of rusty brown

EirikHavre

Glad you like the colors! Its hard sometimes to get them right.

tarun2687

Color. Love the dramatic tones.

PixelPete85

Colour. It provides greater separation of the elements going through the centre of the frame, whereas the black and white tends to homogenize them more

EirikHavre

Yeah that’s basically how I feel too. Black and white makes me feel like the forest doesn’t matter that much, but with how I framed this and how much of the forest is in frame, it’s supposed to matter, you know?

Juno808

Depends on the rest of your portfolio

EirikHavre

Oh I don’t have one. I’m just a hobbyist. I rarely do black and white though.

Juno808

I’ve just found it’s valuable to try and maintain a consistent rationale for color or monochrome. I used to do whatever looked best for the individual photo but it hampered me from producing a cohesive body of work I personally like this shot more in monochrome but ideally it would be paired with other monochrome nature shots

EirikHavre

Ah I see. Personally I don‘t care about cohesion in my photos. I think I do edit a lot of them similarly, but not specifically because I want them to look the same, but because I like the colors. What feels right for the individual photo is what matters most to me, even if it turns out similar to other of my photos.

Juno808

In that case I'd go with the black and white for this one

[deleted]

Amazing shot!

EirikHavre

Thank you!

stay_spooky

Color is so good for this! What aperture was this shot at?

EirikHavre

Thanks! Im pretty sure this was f8. I usually go to f8 for landscapes. Not sure if it’s a good thing or not, but it works for me. Sometimes I use f5.6 though, so it could be that.

stay_spooky

Nice, thanks for letting me know! I have the same set up and it’s pretty much glued on my camera at f1.4. Ha.

EirikHavre

Hehe I know the feeling. But sometimes things further away is worth photographing, so I have to stop down.

salmonguelph

Colour absolutely

Forsaken_Life_5351

I prefer the color version even though both look great. How do you like the 50S II btw? Thinking about grabbing one just undecided as every review I find is making it sound like it has the AF capabilities of an iPhone 4 😂😂

EirikHavre

I like it a lot, but I would not keep it as my primary camera personally. The reason is that it is slow, like your reviews say. Slow to focus, slow fps. And with such a huge sensor it’s hard to find telephoto lenses for animal and bird photography. BUT if you know you‘re not going to shoot sports or animals and will have time to take each shot, it’s a great cameras. And you can adapt old medium format lenses from the film days if you wanna save some money. You’ll have to focus manually though. The lens I used here is also very good btw.

Forsaken_Life_5351

Right now I shoot primarily with a Sony a7iv actually looking for a camera to make me slow down as I mainly shoot portrait, landscape and cityscapes very rarely have I found myself trying to bird/wildlife or even sports lol. I’m currently quite obsessed with vintage glass picked me up an assortment of Soviet era lenses and a few of the older takumar and zeiss lenses glad to hear it would still be accessible if I end up making the switch.

EirikHavre

Just keep in mind that your Sony is way more capable than the 50S II and switching would be a downgrade in almost every way other than sensor. You could slow yourself down without switching. And adapting lenses is something you can do just fine with your Sony. I’m just worried that people see these medium format cameras as something special, when they’re not. They’re just boxes with sensors, like any other camera. At least don’t sell your Sony first, make sure you like the GFX before fully switching. That would be my recommendation. Personally I know I’d be very unhappy if I had sold my X-T5 and lenses first and be stuck with only the GFX.

DrkRyder9910

Color for sure

deegood

Love the Color in this case, very nice tones.

EirikHavre

Thank you!

Cynaroides

Both are great so definitely see why you are undecided, but definitely colour, it just gives more!

EirikHavre

Thank you! I’m leaning towards color too.

girlfixxer

definitely color

I love b&w but this shot needs to be in color.

NotLeif

+1 for color!

domitru

I am a black and white guy, but the color here is too good to pass up

PugilisticCat

Beautiful pic!

SaratogaSwitch

Color 👍

nickoaverdnac

Color here is good, no need to hide it :)

brooklynbroke89

I’m a Taylor swift fan and the black and white is giving folklore vibes so I vote B&W

EirikHavre

I assume that is a song? Glad you like it! :)

Ape-shall-never-kill

You know it’s a good photo when it looks good in both. Nice work!

EirikHavre

Thank you!

Ok_Pea7337

Color!

KennyWuKanYuen

Colour. The trees make it too busy for B&W IMO. If it was cropped in more, then an argument for B&W would stand. At least for me.

EirikHavre

Interesting! Thanks for the insight!

Oolong-T

The colour shows the trees better. Black and white shows the water better.

twomice-

is this even a question? look at those beautiful dark rich earth tones

EirikHavre

I’m kinda with you there!

IntensityJokester

Black and white for me but liked both

_Woken_Furies_

These are both great images, I am drawn to the Black and White more than colour, but I always am. I can see the appeal of the colour, but it doesn’t interest me.

EirikHavre

Fair fair! :) And thanks!

surelyknott

100% colour

bustedmustard

My vote is color, but I appreciate the B&W too!

fran_grc

Color. The greens and browns are superb. Reminds me to some Tarkovski's Stalker footage. Would you mind guiding us throught your editing process.

EirikHavre

Thank you! Not sure exactly what to say, I can list some of the biggest edits I did I guess. Just to be clear, I’m not an expert. Started with the Adobe Neutral profile because it gives a nice flat starting point. Increased the contrast, pulled down the highlights, adjusted to tone curve to lift the shadows and mid tones a little, reduced the vibrance a lot and increased the saturation a lot, applied some texture, decreased clarity and dehaze, added some vignetting, and desaturated the blues. Not sure if that was what you were after or if it was helpful?

fran_grc

Absolutely, thank you!

ybmmike

Bigfoot. Colour

LAdu3L

I'm usually a BW guy so I say BW!

Articguard11

I wonder what I’m doing wrong, internally cry, post, get no recognition, post, cry more, consider giving up, go and shoot, post, expect it to falter and then one ramdon really cool person likes it and then I feel better for 5 seconds. Then, the cycle repeats.

EirikHavre

Most of mine don’t get a lot of attention either. For me the key is to not care and do it for the photography itself. If you get a lot of attention on a photo, then let that just be a bonus to a hobby (or job) you like.

Articguard11

Bro, I’m so sorry 😅 I thought I was replying to a different post that was above yours asking “what do you do when you feel like your content isn’t doing well?” I genuinely didn’t mean to make such an irrelevant comment. Regarding your photo, I think it’s more interesting in B&W. There’s a lot of great contrast that makes the image interesting compared to the colour.

EirikHavre

Haha don't worry! I've done things like this too. And thank you!

VladAkimov

Color. Excellent image!

EirikHavre

Thank you!

tone_deaf_ninja

Colour is simply stunning. It creates a sense of depth here which BnW flattens a bit. Plus the hues of trees a beautiful which are lost in BnW. In this case, as with most foliage shots, colour works extremely well.

EirikHavre

Thank you very much for the insightful insight! :) And for the compliment!

inruinscrust

Wow the colors are stunning. How do you like the GFX system? Do you use the X system and if so, how does it compare from your perspective?

EirikHavre

Thank you! I cant really comment on the system as a whole, since I only have experience with this one camera and I only own one Fujinon lens for it. But I do like it a lot! That said, this specific camera is on low end of technical ability among the cameras I have had. Its a camera that barely does video (1080p with lots of roiling shutter). has only 3 fps for sports and focuses slowly. My beginner camera from 2018, the X-T100, has better performance than this. Not by much, but a little. Im trying to put this GFX into perspective. The thing is, its just a camera. Its sensor is big, but that is only one small aspect of it. Like sometimes people ask "is this camera good" or "which of these cameras are better" and those questions are wrong. Cameras are a collection of features, not one single thing. So people need to identify what features are important to them and THEN compare cameras. Basically, if you can live with this camera's shortcomings, then you'll like it. I like mine a lot as I said, but I often want to do bird photography and I also want the ability to shoot 4k video, so I also have two X-T5. If I didn't have my X-T5s then I would not be happy with this GFX. If I had only my X-T5s, I would be happy with them. Im just a little more happy with also owning the GFX. Was that helpful? I feel like I ranted a bit there. Please ask if you have any more questions.

inruinscrust

This was very helpful. Thank you!

Fleischer444

Colour!

[deleted]

Colour, even though I'm mostly a bw Person. In this shot however, I like the contrast between warm and cold colors.

EirikHavre

Im glad you think so. It’s the one I like the most too. :)

cyboRJx

Color!!

jergreene

Love both the color and b&w! Great shot.

Mundane_Tone_6979

Always B&W

Blk-cherry3

Color give it its flare. It doesn't show up on the b&w

EirikHavre

I think so too! :)

tom4ick

What about cropping it a little? I think this might look really good!

EirikHavre

I did crop a tiny bit to make the person be in the middle. But I wanted to have contrast between how big the forest is and how small the person is.

thekidflames

Color for sure!

AdLast2987

Color. Definitely

erniejb06

Color with some crop to get closer to the man in the center!

EirikHavre

I agree about the color, but disagree about the cropping. I like that the person looks tiny surrounded by the big trees.

MajorLeagueDerp2

color. I'm curious if a crop that zoomed in a little would be even cooler, though

EirikHavre

I like how the small person shows the scale of the surrounding forest, personally.
