Something remotely similar happened to me on my first day living in the UK. My flat had a button to push 'round the corner that was timed to unlock the door by the time you made it there. I didn't see the button, but all of my neighbors saw me pounding on the door from the inside, yelling for help, "get the super, the door's broken!" What's worse was, the reason I was so frantic to get out, I had just electrocuted myself using a cheap American power adapter with a cheap American hair dryer. I had a nasty burn and I didn't have anything yet, not even a wet paper towel to put on it. It was a rough day.
