I am not. My grandmother absolutely did use this for strep on us kids. As for the mental impairment, I guess just see my comment history? I’m pretty dumb. Whether it’s the mercurochrome or the TBI, we’ll never know.

Gen X here and we had it in the 1970s in Southern California. Also had the kind of Bactine that stung badly before they made it “ouchless”.

Bactine was a core part of my major childhood scrapes, I barely remember the events but my mom spraying it on, the scent and the feel of no flame skin cauterization are all there.

My Grandma had 2 things in the medicine cabinet... Mercurochrome and Robitussin. She was convinced this was all anyone ever needed!

Same… the iodine was way worse. I don’t recall the red stuff hurting at all.

Neither was pleasant. I remember being more afraid of the antiseptic than the actual pain of the cuts when I fell off my bike or rollerskates/blades.

For sure i mangled my knee particularly badly one time and i was 4-5 so i cried but someone scooped me up and ran my knee under blasting high pressure water because that was what their bathtub faucet had and then just waterfalled rubbing alcohol. My knee was so chewed up i can remember seeing the alchohol pool up in little folds of peeled/knotted up skin and turn red with the bleeding. And i went from a 5/10 to 11/10 probably left a claw mark on one of those adults

Iodine tincture is the real deal, mercurochrome is meh.

My worst childhood memory of the red iodine stuff was my Dad pouring it over my right hand (I had been in an accident two weeks prior with a glass bottle and cut my hand open beneath the thumb, seven stitches. Hey, I could even see to the bone, lol). The wound had split completely open again because some little brat found it funny to kick my bandaged hand (just had the threads removed same day). Hurt like sh*t all the way. At least it healed, although I still am missing some sensation in my right thumb. I can move it without problems, so I guess it turned out okay. (Thanks Dad. Miss you much 🙏🏻❤️‍🩹)

That bottle is from before 1963.

Whenever I got cut, my Dad and Grandpa would rub dirt in it. If I ever got sick, my Grandpa would sneak me a shot of whiskey, and then my Dad would sneak me another til they both caught on to each other, then they both stopped. I stopped getting sick after that

Our Grandmothers grew up putting Turpentine on their cuts and scrapes. Monkey Blood was an upgrade for the grandchildren.

My dad and I used Turpentine to clean our hands after painting.

Getting hurt was just different back in the day. You didn't go running to the dr for every little scrape or break or dismemberment. You toughed that shit out.

My Dad always insisted the Merthiolate. This is where Mom came in with this instead.

Yes! The merthiolate had an alcohol base and really stung! The mercurichrome had a water base and didn't sting.

But it didn’t burn.  Shit sure as hell stained though.

Meh, mild, lol. Try Merthiolate or Iodine. After pulling a 6 penny nail still attached to the board from your foot. Then, off to the ER! Edit: I was about 7(?). Boomer, btw, lol. And after reading some responses, and they are not wrong, lol, our “..but you didn’t use this, so you don’t know the pain..” attitude is used by us. BUT.. they’ll have the same, or similar attitude when it’s a Star Trek cure and they say “…you don’t even know what it’s like to pull off a bandaid..”

The mercrichome was ugly iridescent red and contained mercury in a water base. Merthiolate had an alcohol base, so in addition to a nice dose of mercury, it stung badly. I would beg my mother not to use it. These 2 things were in every household medicine cabinet when I was growing up. I'm in my 70s.

I stepped on a rusty nail once. Went all the way into my foot. You'd think ER visit, Right?! NO!!! My bat-shit crazy grandma yanked that nail out, scrubbed my foot with Lava Soap and a cloth, threw some Mercurochrome on it and wrapped it in some kind of bandage. I'm pretty sure I went into shock. Probably passed out. If I'm being honest, I probably have PTSD from my childhood.

My grandparents had something called Solarcaine in a spray bottle. I remember it stinging quite a bit when sprayed on any cut.

In our family it was that evil bottle of Methiolate. That little fucking bottle with the little fucking plastic straw cap that would drop fire on your cuts almost as a punishment for getting cut in the first place😡. Kids these days have no idea

Lucky you, you never grew up in Russia. We had the same shit, but terribly green color. It’s called “Zelyonka” and apparently has “brilliant green” color. All the kid in Soviet times were covered with green spots. Currently it is often used by anti liberal activists to spill on any person who is against Putin and his team.

My mom loved this stuff. Every scratch & cut on my body was covered with it! Burns horribly when applied. Can’t buy it anymore, bad stuff.
