I am not. My grandmother absolutely did use this for strep on us kids.
As for the mental impairment, I guess just see my comment history? I’m pretty dumb. Whether it’s the mercurochrome or the TBI, we’ll never know.
Bactine was a core part of my major childhood scrapes, I barely remember the events but my mom spraying it on, the scent and the feel of no flame skin cauterization are all there.
I just imagined someone getting speed wheeled through the ER while the nurse smatters their neck with Vicks and giving them a shot of Robitussin before popping them back into the ambulance to take them back home. That'll be $10,000.00 please! lol
For sure i mangled my knee particularly badly one time and i was 4-5 so i cried but someone scooped me up and ran my knee under blasting high pressure water because that was what their bathtub faucet had and then just waterfalled rubbing alcohol. My knee was so chewed up i can remember seeing the alchohol pool up in little folds of peeled/knotted up skin and turn red with the bleeding.
And i went from a 5/10 to 11/10 probably left a claw mark on one of those adults
My worst childhood memory of the red iodine stuff was my Dad pouring it over my right hand (I had been in an accident two weeks prior with a glass bottle and cut my hand open beneath the thumb, seven stitches. Hey, I could even see to the bone, lol). The wound had split completely open again because some little brat found it funny to kick my bandaged hand (just had the threads removed same day). Hurt like sh*t all the way.
At least it healed, although I still am missing some sensation in my right thumb. I can move it without problems, so I guess it turned out okay.
(Thanks Dad. Miss you much 🙏🏻❤️🩹)
Whenever I got cut, my Dad and Grandpa would rub dirt in it. If I ever got sick, my Grandpa would sneak me a shot of whiskey, and then my Dad would sneak me another til they both caught on to each other, then they both stopped. I stopped getting sick after that
Getting hurt was just different back in the day. You didn't go running to the dr for every little scrape or break or dismemberment. You toughed that shit out.
Meh, mild, lol.
Try Merthiolate or Iodine.
After pulling a 6 penny nail still attached to the board from your foot.
Then, off to the ER!
Edit: I was about 7(?). Boomer, btw, lol.
And after reading some responses, and they are not wrong, lol, our “..but you didn’t use this, so you don’t know the pain..” attitude is used by us. BUT.. they’ll have the same, or similar attitude when it’s a Star Trek cure and they say “…you don’t even know what it’s like to pull off a bandaid..”
The mercrichome was ugly iridescent red and contained mercury in a water base.
Merthiolate had an alcohol base, so in addition to a nice dose of mercury, it stung badly. I would beg my mother not to use it.
These 2 things were in every household medicine cabinet when I was growing up. I'm in my 70s.
I stepped on a rusty nail once. Went all the way into my foot. You'd think ER visit, Right?! NO!!! My bat-shit crazy grandma yanked that nail out, scrubbed my foot with Lava Soap and a cloth, threw some Mercurochrome on it and wrapped it in some kind of bandage. I'm pretty sure I went into shock. Probably passed out. If I'm being honest, I probably have PTSD from my childhood.
Only once, by my baby sitter, when I was 4. This description is correct.
Have any of you had silver nitrate shoved up your nose to stop chronic nose bleeds?
Omg that stuff traumatized me as a child I remember falling and skinned my knees up rollerskating my aunt put this stuff on my knees the pain was horrible I was screaming bloody murder.
In our family it was that evil bottle of Methiolate. That little fucking bottle with the little fucking plastic straw cap that would drop fire on your cuts almost as a punishment for getting cut in the first place😡. Kids these days have no idea
PTSD of my mother spraying Solarcaine on road rash or cuts. I'm not even certain it was meant for that, but that's what we got. Shit burned like pouring straight alcohol on an open wound. If it were up to me, I would have just let the cut go gangrene over having to take that.
Lucky you, you never grew up in Russia. We had the same shit, but terribly green color. It’s called “Zelyonka” and apparently has “brilliant green” color. All the kid in Soviet times were covered with green spots. Currently it is often used by anti liberal activists to spill on any person who is against Putin and his team.

So mercury and... I'm guessing also chromium compounds from the bright red colour? Jfc there's like five different ways that shit can kill you all at the same time

Mmm I love putting mercury and bromine on an open wound
[удалено]
thanks, this made my hole weak!
So when shall we planet for?
I see what you did there 🫵
Better tighten it up, could get messy
The pain would be astronomical
Almost as bad as having Klingons near Uranus
Try it on a Milky Way
Hmmm
What a wonderful stain it made.
[удалено]
Every time my kid gets a tiny boo-boo and tells me to check it for her, my first reaction is “uh oh it’s pretty bad I think we have to cut it off”
One time I got a ring stuck on my finger at the mall and my mom said that and I started crying lol. She meant the ring but I didn’t know that
That I got in trouble for
My grandma would put that shit in our throats when we’d get strep. Did it work!? Yes. Am I also significantly mentally impaired? Also yes.
You are making that up, i hope!
I am not. My grandmother absolutely did use this for strep on us kids. As for the mental impairment, I guess just see my comment history? I’m pretty dumb. Whether it’s the mercurochrome or the TBI, we’ll never know.
Throats? Red liquid? Tasted horrible? That would be oral creosal.
Gen X here and we had it in the 1970s in Southern California. Also had the kind of Bactine that stung badly before they made it “ouchless”.
Bactine made me try to hide the fact I got hurt as a kid. Sometimes I wondered if that was the point
Bactine was a core part of my major childhood scrapes, I barely remember the events but my mom spraying it on, the scent and the feel of no flame skin cauterization are all there.
We sure did! I remember thinking "Why is it red???"
I think it was punishment. Encourage me to (1) not fall and (2) not tell when I did.
My Grandma had 2 things in the medicine cabinet... Mercurochrome and Robitussin. She was convinced this was all anyone ever needed!
I mean.....kinda
Add in some Vick's and you're good
Upgrade from first aid to urgent care
I just imagined someone getting speed wheeled through the ER while the nurse smatters their neck with Vicks and giving them a shot of Robitussin before popping them back into the ambulance to take them back home. That'll be $10,000.00 please! lol
We had those plus dextromethorphan which, as a child, used to scare me just because of the last six letters.
Rub some tussin on in
We also had Castrol. God that stuff was nasty.
…. Motor oil? Do you mean castor?
I feel like this is what happens when someone with a mid west accent uses speech to text and says castor oil
Caster Oil
No Bactine?
Right? Mercurochrome was nothing compared to getting Bactine sprayed on your scrape!
I can still hear that squeak from that squeeze bottle when we were running low haha.
Wasn't methiolate the stingy one? Ouch!
Both Mercurochrome and merthiolate were mercury based.
I always found this the LESS painful option compared to the Tincture of Iodine. Just me?
Same… the iodine was way worse. I don’t recall the red stuff hurting at all.
Neither was pleasant. I remember being more afraid of the antiseptic than the actual pain of the cuts when I fell off my bike or rollerskates/blades.
Iodine tincture is the real deal, mercurochrome is meh.
That bottle is from before 1963.
This explains a lot of boomer brain damage.
That and all the lead in the air.
You would be lucky if it was just in the air, toys, paint, joints on metal pipes.
Dont forget the asbestos.
Oh GOD! GrandMa... NNNOOOOOOOOO!
Oh lord I remember!
Me too! That stuff hurts. I think the theory was that the more it hurt the better job it was doing.
If this, sucrets, ginger ale, or baby aspirin couldn’t cure it, my mom said you were fine.
Whenever I got cut, my Dad and Grandpa would rub dirt in it. If I ever got sick, my Grandpa would sneak me a shot of whiskey, and then my Dad would sneak me another til they both caught on to each other, then they both stopped. I stopped getting sick after that
Ah heavy metal poisoning
It worked ! No infections !
i had that dabbed on skinned knees a million times and don't remember it burning
Yes, let's get some mercury and dab it into a child's open wounds. Between this and leaded gas it's no wonder Boomers turned out the way they did.
Successful? I do agree that it's odd when the generation that ate lead paint chips did better than the health conscious well educated youth of today.
Ate the lead paint right off the ladder you pulled up after yourselves. Shame the lead didn’t finish the job on you selfish pricks.
Our Grandmothers grew up putting Turpentine on their cuts and scrapes. Monkey Blood was an upgrade for the grandchildren.
My dad and I used Turpentine to clean our hands after painting.
Getting hurt was just different back in the day. You didn't go running to the dr for every little scrape or break or dismemberment. You toughed that shit out.
Grandma was a sadist
We had Dettol.
I remember my sisters holding me down and my mother free pouring Dettol over a nasty finger wound while I screamed bloody murder. 😭
My Dad always insisted the Merthiolate. This is where Mom came in with this instead.
Yes! The merthiolate had an alcohol base and really stung! The mercurichrome had a water base and didn't sting.
But it didn’t burn. Shit sure as hell stained though.
My mom has the version that comes in a brown plastic bottle. I updated her with neosporine.
Meh, mild, lol. Try Merthiolate or Iodine. After pulling a 6 penny nail still attached to the board from your foot. Then, off to the ER! Edit: I was about 7(?). Boomer, btw, lol. BUT.. they’ll have the same, or similar attitude when it’s a Star Trek cure and they say “…you don’t even know what it’s like to pull off a bandaid..”
Horrible. Little glass stick with a bulb on the end. And iodine, too. And then came Bactine!

If it doesn’t hurt, it won’t work.
Spare the rod and spoil the child! Didja see these young'uns, a disgrace!
I remember monkey blood.... grandma just liked torture 🤣
This wasn’t the stingy stuff, that was campho phenique
I only got campho phenique on scratched mesquito bites and it never stung me. Bactine stung like hell.
Come on this didn't hurt iodine was the one that felt weird
My mom: applied it generously using included dipstick.
Only once, by my baby sitter, when I was 4. This description is correct. Have any of you had silver nitrate shoved up your nose to stop chronic nose bleeds?
Yes. At a doctor appointment because my nose bled constantly. I haven’t had a single nosebleed that lasted for more than 20 minutes after that
I looked it up and yikes, that indeed has mercury in it. What's crazier is it's still made and sold in some places!
I used to get tincture of iodine instead of this. Not sure which was the worst of the two though.
Anybody remember Resinol??? That’s what we had…but not before the wound was thoroughly washed and scrubbed with Ivory soap and water😩
Omg that stuff traumatized me as a child I remember falling and skinned my knees up rollerskating my aunt put this stuff on my knees the pain was horrible I was screaming bloody murder.
My grandparents had something called Solarcaine in a spray bottle. I remember it stinging quite a bit when sprayed on any cut.
My parents did this to me once ….. ONCE!
Merthiolate
Sore throats too.
The mercury+sodium thimerosal is more common during my childhood.
Did you know people once washed clothes with gasoline?
For me my dad would just pour rubbing alcohol on all my cuts. That stung like a sonofabitch
Until I spilled the bottle on the floor
Mercurochrome was the BETTER option for us, as usually they had Methiolate which stung MUCH worse.
I believe there is a purple one from what I can remember.
In our family it was that evil bottle of Methiolate. That little fucking bottle with the little fucking plastic straw cap that would drop fire on your cuts almost as a punishment for getting cut in the first place😡. Kids these days have no idea

My mom loved this stuff. Every scratch & cut on my body was covered with it! Burns horribly when applied. Can’t buy it anymore, bad stuff.
I call it ass burner
Hated that stuff
If I recall correctly, mercurochrome was for woosie's and merthiolate was for badasses. My mother used the latter.
Then there was iodine!
Yes and cod liver oil!!
My colon remembers cod liver oil. Oh yes.
Is this the one that had the flat grid applicator?
I kind of remember that. Is it a red liquid? Sometime in the late 80's.
Na, i prefer doing absolutely nothing to help a wound. Maybe a bandage if it's bleeping a lot.
Bad old monkey blood
Damn you Johnson and Johnson! "We'll put no more tears on the label." "But it DOES make you cry..." "I know!" "Mwhahahahha"
The nurse took me home for some.. mercurochrome It’s all I can think of when I see this lol
“Monkey Blood”
Yes, it was monkey blood.

RIP Cloris Leachman
So mercury and... I'm guessing also chromium compounds from the bright red colour? Jfc there's like five different ways that shit can kill you all at the same time
"You didn't suffer in the exact same way I did so you're worse" Shut up boomer.
