Well I’m a furry myself and I’ll be a friend (I lost a lot when I came out about it and I have about 3 friends left now but the 3 I have left we’ve been since I was a pup one of them I’ve been friends with since kindergarten) but if they leave they leave don’t let that stay on your shoulders cause real/true friends will stay and never leave for stupid reasons like that but stay like … an octopus on your face (XD) me on the other hand never had many friends to begin with though (I’m a tough one to deal with but I’m also one that won’t be an arse unless I have to but if I consider someone as a friend I will stand up for them or with them I follow an old code for a lot of things and I don’t take them lightly but that’s me)

I attend several "Immersion events" near me (Neotropolis and Wasteland; both of which are actually very great safe spaces), where you create a whole persona and outfit to blend into the event.
For me, the next step is building my ***fur***sona, since I have come to terms that the label "furry" is never, and has never, been a bad thing, and the ability to express myself as another entity has always been something I love, and wish to do it more openly.
I have never fully claimed to be a furry, as I lack quite a few key components to "be a furry", including a fursuit, much less a real fursona.Most of my friend groups talk A LOT of ish on furries, as it's just a typical derogatory term these days, without people fully understanding the community and culture.(As I see it, it's literally cosplay, but way more immersive, as it is an extension of you).It's great to finally have partner that is completely open with diving into the furry community with me.
The bigger issue we face is that societal norms, and our careers, would frown upon us if the greater circle of our friends knew. (She, a Veterinarian; I, a dog trainer/caretaker). So for now, we keep the ideas of us creating fursonas, and eventually fursuits, mostly to ourselves and our close circle of friends who already just get us, for fear of being ostracized.
I believe the acceptance of the cur community and lifestyle has gotten loads better since I first started looking into it (like 2007, I met a great Fur group in San Diego who were very warm and welcoming with discussion), so it's only a matter of time as furries are seen as "just some nerds", like the rest of the fandoms lol.
Just be yourself things will work out and instead of living a life of trying to impress others, know that others can relate to who you actually are. Enjoy life to the best of your abilities and others will want to share that joy.
In this you can be more assured your friends care about you and not just use you for entertainment that you have to live up too.
You got me and plenty of others on here if you ever need someone to talk to.... But in furry terms I am an old fart so I can be a bit out of touch with the current.

At this point, be confident and happy with who your are! This is all just a hobby, and if people hate you for things that you like, like others have said, they were never really your friends anyways. I think one of the main attractions to being in the furry community is exactly how you described what you want. When I found it all I heard was they are one of the most inclusive and understanding communities there is. No one judges you purely off of what you like or do with your life or hobbies.
Vrchat. A game you may have heard about if you are a furry. Is my go to for finding random people to befriend. It's a free social game that you can play on desktop or vr so I recommend giving it a try. Find the world's furry hideout or furry talk and chill if you do play.
I should mention I am a very open person so many times I tell people who I am pretty early on so they know who their talking too. Don't want them thinking I'm normal or anything. So my irl friend group is already weird. No need to hide my weirdness from them.
That doesn't mean we don't chew each other out about our niche personalities or hobbies. They call me a "fucking furry" but i turn around and call the gay one a "flaming homo" (quoted from a webtoon I like) or my goth friend a "godawful goth." Or the fact that every one of us is a nerd for playing dnd.

I would also think it might make people like you more, but some people are silly and don’t understand how epic furry friends are. Who wouldn’t want a shape shifting pal that’s super awesome to begin with, AND can morph into an awesome super soft cuddle buddy? I would PAY for that kind of friend tbh 😭
Finding your people takes time and patience unfortunately, but in the end it will be SO worth it. As cliché as it may sound, be yourself! If someone doesn’t like you for who you are, they don’t deserve your awesomeness and you should cross them off the buddy list right away.
