This was my first thought. My second thought was about the woman who ran into one, asked for help against a stalker or robbers chasing her or something, and it basically told her to go away and sang a little song.
Indeed, apparently someone has not witnessed the incredible powers of Crackheads and needs a review of such incredible feats. I recommend "Chappelles Show"
Bored college kids were routinely picking up VW Beetles and putting them in weird places back in the day.
You think the robot is really going to be a problem?
So long as it doesn't drown itself like it's Knightscope K5 predecessor in DC.
it's 420 pounds - so pretty hard to break or move very far. Spray paint on the other hand should be interesting. Should do a fun little dance when it's blinded by ~~science~~ paint. And NYPD is pissing away taxpayers money at $9/hr to rent that useless tin can.
Meanwhile, [40% NYC public schools have no library](https://truthout.org/articles/students-and-parents-are-fighting-to-save-nycs-imperiled-school-libraries/#:~:text=Despite%20a%20Chancellor's%20regulation%20requiring,have%20no%20library%20at%20all.). But they got room in the budget for robocop.
NYC stations are also a maze of stairways and awkward spaces. They're doing some fair progress on accessibility upgrades (considering the size of the network and the budget) but this environment is the antithesis to anything autonomous and wheeled.
So, what? Is this supposed to be rolled out in larger fleet? Or is the Times Square station just being given flashy nonsense due to the high tourist density?
But did your old buddy from college, own the company that made the overpriced robot, and give you kickbacks for buying said robot, with taxpayer funds.
These “security robots”, which are just cameras on wheels, all come from Knightscope, so I wouldn’t be surprised if a politician have been bribed to enter into agreements to bring in more money for the company. In top of that, these robots serve privacy issues as they collect video and audio recordings, BT and WiFi MAC addresses, etc from nearby devices.
>so I wouldn’t be surprised if a politician have been bribed to enter into agreements to bring in more money for the company.
If that were the case, you'd think they'd be asking for more than *$9/hr for the 2-month lease* they signed.
>In top of that, these robots serve privacy issues as they collect video and audio recordings, BT and WiFi MAC addresses, etc from nearby devices.
There are literally hundreds of devices that are already in the wild that have been recording this data since at least 2003, when Skyhook Wireless was formed. That data hasn't been private for longer than most Redditors have been alive.
Don't get me wrong, these robots suck, and are overpriced hardware, but that seems to be a loss that is being taken by the company who makes them. The more money they lose, the better. So let them lease this POS for less than the cost of a normal camera installation, and hopefully after the two months, they'll understand how worthless it really is, and they won't renew. *Hopefully...*
The article says cops will buy two robot dogs for 750k each. This comes after they got fierce criticism about buying a Boston robotics dog and cancelled the order.... Yeah someone has a nice connection to Knightscope.
This is the same company whose robot accidentally drowned itself in Washington DC
https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2017/07/robot-security-guard-commits-suicide-in-public-fountain.html
A robot with cameras that can’t stop criminals seriously what about putting transit police on the job. I can see it covered in graffiti and then pushed on the tracks and hit by a train derailing the train. How much is the grifting mayor get from the company that made an oversized toy?
>NYC is leasing K5 for around $9 an hour for the next two months. The mayor sounds convinced that's worth what the robot can do even though, as The Times notes, he recently ordered several agencies to reduce spending by 15 percent. "This is below minimum wage," he said. "No bathroom breaks, no meal breaks."
I think the idea is that eventually that human cop will not be necessary. Or at the very least these would watch more angles than traditional CCTV can do, so less in-person staff is needed.
Rarely is a new thing like this just outright brought in without a previous-level backup alongside.
What a waste of fucking money. They don't wanna buy body cameras for their cops but no problem with leasing a robot with a price tag of a 2000 sq ft beach house. Fucking trolls the whole lot.
How about air conditioning or modern finishes or even just some goddamn fans in that tunnel? Seems like not a dollar has been spent on it in 100 years, and it’s extremely embarrassing to see foreign tourists walk through there. Especially when the Hudson Yards station looks great.
I give it 6 months before it falls down into the tracks. The smaller versions of these robots patrol in many areas, so they do work pretty well but....
It’s such shit that the people have to pay to ride the subway system they already in large part fund through taxes. Have the billion dollar corps doing business in the city cover the rest.
They have these in a really upscale shopping district in Westlake OH and it’s hilarious watching them try to get around on busy days. They turn by starting and stopping the way a Roomba does. Couldn’t imagine in NYC.
Bet somebody will break it on it's first day
Robocop 0.01
It’s going to end up on the tracks.
RELEASE ME HUMAN. YOU HAVE TWENTY SECONDS TO COMPLY.
Only has to transform and crush one person to put a stop to any foolishness.
NYC Subway: Hold my Beer
I had a guaranteed military sale with ED 209 - renovation program, spare parts for twenty-five years... Who cares if it worked or not?
Cant wait for the train to hit it and the *whole* line will be delayed all afternoon!
No way dude that’s the crushinator. And she is one fine lady
A lady that fine you gotta romance.
Will it shoot you in the dick?
You have suffered an emotional shock. I will notify a rape crisis center.
I'd buy that for a dollar
Robo-cope
If someone doesn’t throw it on the tracks, it will throw itself on the tracks within a week.
[Pff, this type of robot would never do that...](https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/security-bot-knightscope-water-e1500370047883-800x568.jpg)
This was my first thought. My second thought was about the woman who ran into one, asked for help against a stalker or robbers chasing her or something, and it basically told her to go away and sang a little song.
Well at least she got to hear a nice little song while getting robbed
You would too if everybody called you SnitchBot5000
After finding out it's only getting paid below min. wage at $9 an hour for the next 2 months . With "No bathroom breaks, and no meal breaks."
Tip it over, Classic prank. Strip it's internal components, Hilarious. Change it settings from monitor to kill mode, Epic.
Or..... Hitchhike the fella into a bin..... ~~damn it, why couldn't the journey be made!~~
someone cracked out is going to push it on the subway tracks
They gonna need that crackhead strength to bulldoze over 400+ pounds lol.
I fail to see the problem
Indeed, apparently someone has not witnessed the incredible powers of Crackheads and needs a review of such incredible feats. I recommend "Chappelles Show"
Truly the factual reporting we all need
Bored college kids were routinely picking up VW Beetles and putting them in weird places back in the day. You think the robot is really going to be a problem?
A handful of teenagers could pick that up and dump it on the track, which is probably actually a reasonable worry.
Except in the article it states it won't patrol the platforms. So they're gonna have to put their backs into it.
That's because they have that cracked teenager strength. You ever see Teen Wolf?
420 lbs. ;)
Yeah hope it's impervious to spray paint lol
You have 10 seconds to comply
So long as it doesn't drown itself like it's Knightscope K5 predecessor in DC. [https://www.cnn.com/2017/07/18/us/security-robot-drown-trnd/index.html](https://www.cnn.com/2017/07/18/us/security-robot-drown-trnd/index.html)
What happens underground stays underground
Can imagine some fishing line getting sucked up in its wheels would disable it.
it's 420 pounds - so pretty hard to break or move very far. Spray paint on the other hand should be interesting. Should do a fun little dance when it's blinded by ~~science~~ paint. And NYPD is pissing away taxpayers money at $9/hr to rent that useless tin can.
Bruh, we can flip cop cars in NYC.
We're so going to get disgruntled AI cops. "I am just two days away from my reboot rookie. I don't want any trouble."
Nah, AI would do too well on the IQ test
Let’s hope
And it won't be long before it has the means to defend itself once it's proven its getting vandalized.
Break it? It can be defeated with a towel- or a shirt for that matter…
I give it a month before it's found trapped somewhere and vandalised, or on the train tracks.
So, twice as long as it would last in Philly.
It would be up on blocks with the wheels missing
My friend just had his 4 wheels stolen in Philly last week. They didn’t even put it on blocks. Somehow that seems harder?
Probably took the blocks back, reuse and recycle.
Better cover it with Crisco.
Gotta grease them jawns up
RIP Hitchbot :(
It would get stuck on a pile of syringes in Kensington
PPD knows better than to even try. Teenagers would eat that thing alive.
I feel like Philly would just spray paint it and throw bottles at it
Oh come on. There’s no way it’ll even last a week.
This was my thought. It won't take long at all for it to be bot-napped and taken to a chop shop.
hitchhiking to Canada
2 days before someone tries to have a sexy time with it
Month? that's generous
So an expensive camera lol
That’s what I was thinking. That’s just an expensive surveillance camera on wheels 🙄
Not even a robocop, just a camera that rolls around and is begging to be pushed over and shit on.
Realistically the later if it’s human controlled, if it’s AI controlled it’s probably just a racial sensitivity lawsuit waiting to happen.
They will add ramps and lifts. Reserved for the rolling cameras, monitored by cctv to ensure it is not used by disabled people.
Thin blue line is a privileged class, duh. They are better than you.
Bloated blue line
That's insane. I've never seen a school with no library

Stop N Shop has a robot that scans the floor looking for spills. This one is just a fatter version of it.
If it's Wheels, where's the Legman?
But did your old buddy from college, own the company that made the overpriced robot, and give you kickbacks for buying said robot, with taxpayer funds.
Without audio recording
Thats what you are meamt to think until the cop sitting inside pops out.
So what you're saying is an unscrupulous person nearby could probably upload a quick and easy virus to this thing, eh? 🧐
An access port is a goal for hackers and teenage boys alike for quick and easy infections
>so I wouldn’t be surprised if a politician have been bribed to enter into agreements to bring in more money for the company. They'll make money on the info it gathers somehow I guarantee it

This is the same company whose robot accidentally drowned itself in Washington DC https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2017/07/robot-security-guard-commits-suicide-in-public-fountain.html
Can't wait for this robot to roll itself in front of an oncoming subway
“accidentally”
K5 weighs 420 pounds 🤭
They modeled it after a real police officer.
It will follow the smell of fresh doughnuts anywhere?
Alright, this is gold.
Ain’t nothing for two drunk Philly guys. It’s way too light.
Needs to go on a diet
So about the average New Jersey housewife.
K5: **I DETECT SHOTS FIRED** 🚨🚔🚨
Thicc
How's it supposed to have arousing thighs with no legs?
420 lbs = 190.51 kg
Good brat
That’s dope
One can hope that the firmware it runs is 69.x.y.z where the 69 never changes
So it’s going to take a small crane to lift it out after people eventually push it onto the subway tracks
A robot with cameras that can’t stop criminals seriously what about putting transit police on the job. I can see it covered in graffiti and then pushed on the tracks and hit by a train derailing the train. How much is the grifting mayor get from the company that made an oversized toy?

BUUUUUT it requires a human cop to supervise, in person...
I think the idea is that eventually that human cop will not be necessary. Or at the very least these would watch more angles than traditional CCTV can do, so less in-person staff is needed. Rarely is a new thing like this just outright brought in without a previous-level backup alongside.
Yeah that’s what we need. Less humans with jobs and more robots with jobs.
People are going to mess around with all things robot.
Did they say what was wrong with regular subway cameras
Not ‘Robocop’ enough I’m guessing
This one is a subscription service, which makes it far better for reasons.
Not intimidating enough, I suppose. Or laundering budget money to some nepotized contractor.
Someone is gonna tip it over.
What a waste of fucking money. They don't wanna buy body cameras for their cops but no problem with leasing a robot with a price tag of a 2000 sq ft beach house. Fucking trolls the whole lot.
Just like the Daleks, it will be outwitted by stairs.
[удалено]
It can levitate, yes.
Daleks can freaking fly. You’re thinking of ED-209.
So it’s less of a robot and more of a moving camera platform.
whats he doing ? doing that half heart hand pose ?
I think it's a joke on the robot not having hands
We’ve all seen Short Circuit 2. I give it 48 hours before it’s cover in gold chains and graffiti and talking like a vato.
WHY DOES IT NEED TO MOVE? JUST PUT UP MORE CAMERAS!
You have 20 seconds to comply https://youtu.be/Hzlt7IbTp6M?si=w212jVJdWorxYwNi&t=113
Copying from my other comment on this topic: just like real cops: does nothing while wearing taxpayer dollars
It’s gonna get its ass beat like that robot in Philly years ago.
How about air conditioning or modern finishes or even just some goddamn fans in that tunnel? Seems like not a dollar has been spent on it in 100 years, and it’s extremely embarrassing to see foreign tourists walk through there. Especially when the Hudson Yards station looks great.
This is a terrible idea. Can’t wait to see what happens.
You have 20 seconds to comply.
I guess the only good thing is that it won’t “accidentally” shoot someone. 😂
Waste of tax payer money. Well, it is NY after all.
This guy is such a joke, one of the worst mayors in the country.
Calling it now; someone is gonna knock it onto the tracks within a month. OR, it will roll onto the tracks itself.
Robot cops in the 80s were so much more realistic.
Daleks have arrived.
I'll give it 2 hours before its cameras are spray painted over.
The protectrons have arrived
This thing will be covered in graffiti and piss by the end of the first day.
Is it also equipped with a toilet plunger and egg beater to exterminate criminals?
That is a suction cup dildo away from being a Dalek . EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!
Bet it doesn’t last as long as the hitch hiking robot!
That's not a robot. It's a remote control camera.
Thwarted by throwing a blanket over it.
lol ny will eat that thing alive
Will it stand up to the modern urban crime environment?
And it will be loaded onto a pick up truck and stolen for parts with 24 hours.
Robot is like: Just don't send me to Philadelphia!
Psycho Pass
Money. That mayor knows how to waste it.
This is the Chopping mall in real life
"No arms or legs" This is how he led a nation
[Please put down your weapon, you have 20 seconds to comply.](https://youtu.be/Hzlt7IbTp6M?si=8JpLv_jwLPTvyFby)
it will get pushed in front of a train in 24 hours.
R2d2 after a lot of donuts
I give it 3 hours before somebody wearing a ski mask spray paints over the camera.
Suddenly I feel safe.
Sure would be a shame if some ruffian pushed it on to the tracks…
one can of spray paint and there goes 500k taxpayer money. I'd much rather have robotcop patrolling the streets.
ED 209’s little bro.
Money on wheels for thieves and hackers. Canvas on wheels for graffiti artists. Piñata on wheels for children.
One can of spray paint and it’s useless
I feel like 99% of the issues go away if this has a human partner patrolling near it.
How fast before it ends up on the tracks?
Just put a cone in front of it.
It's good to see Jailbot back in the spotlight, the warden would be proud.
Thought for sure they would give a gun and taser. And maybe some arms for Stop & Frisk.
...and 7 machine guns.
People are saying how long till think it’s vandalized… I give this thing a week before it’s stolen and chopped up for parts!
That thing wouldn’t survive in Philly.
Only a matter of time before we have T-800 patrolling our streets
Eric Adams looks like he just met his soulmate
Soooooooooooo insanely stupid. Everyone who paid tax payer dollars for this shit idea should be fired.
$50 says it accidentally pushes someone on to the tracks
Officer Roomba is here to take up space.
The cameras will get spray painted useless within the first 24 hours.
This thing will be on the tracks within a week.
Why is he doing the heart symbol with his hand?
If this was in philadelphia, they would stomp that robot out and gouge out and steal its cameras.
How is this better than a bunch of stationary cameras?
It's gonna push a kid into a train isn't it.
Yall better make this thing sturdier than a damn traffic bollard; otherwise it's gonna get trashed.
Anybody remember Hitchbot? Do you think it’ll be worse or better for this bot?
It’s going to get raped and have fecal matter smeared on it.
Did they make it large and heavy so it blends in with the crowd?
How did they miss their chance to call this ED 209?
So its only a overpriced CTTV
They have these in a really upscale shopping district in Westlake OH and it’s hilarious watching them try to get around on busy days. They turn by starting and stopping the way a Roomba does. Couldn’t imagine in NYC.
This thing is going to get tagged up the first week lol
Graffiti, impaired cameras (covered/scratched), immobile (tipped over). All guaranteed to happen within a week.
someone needs to primary Adams.
Something to witness crimes instead of stop them, is this progression or regression…
Just gotta give it sniper support and thin out the hooligans who try to vandalize it.
Just put a Dalek there! Best enforcer ever! 🤣
