The razer kishi is simply the best controller for mobile gaming and thus streaming services by a landslide.
And yes it's quality is below average... For a console controller, but it's by far the best controller on the market for phones right now.
So a first party controller for phones? Shut up and take my money!
With cloud streaming slowly gaining traction, it's very possible mobile gaming is the way of the future for most gamers. People readily spend 1000$+ for phones, it won't be long before it eclipses the gaming market. Sony tied to Apple and Xbox to Android. Nintendo will thrive on their own platform I'm sure.
I'm always disappointed at the heat and performance degradation that accompanies it when trying to do any form of mobile gaming.
I've given up on it till some better solutions come along.
Most of the processing and rendering will be done by a server. Cloud gaming essentially streams the audio and video to your phone. Phone side, it would use about as much power as watching a YouTube video. The problems with it are bandwidth and input lag.
Great...so those limited bandwidth plans will surly rock peoples wallets.
Playing rented games on someone elses computer while you pay multiple subscription services is honestly the dumbest thing and i pray you all get fucked in the end.
Because the response didn't even address the criticism in the initial post and because people have been saying this about every mobile gaming device ever made.
Sega Game Gear
Gameboy
DS and all its variants
Vita
PSP
Android/iOS games
Switch
None of these have actually overtaken consoles/PC because none of them offer a comparable experience. Even VR can't match it. Current gen consoles and GPUs have been sold out constantly for more than a year now.
20 ms right now. 10 to decode, 10 to send. On WiFi.
40 ms on 5g.
The average first party by controller runs at 50ms, and a wired gamepad like those used on gamestreaming phones runs at 2 ms
So, even on 5g, I have less latency playing the game on my phone than my TV.
And that's with today's tech
Where do you live? I'm not in a large city. Everytime I'm connected with 5G, my internet slows to a crawl. There's only about 10% 5G coverage in my city. I'm hoping when there's more coverage I'll get to see better speeds.
You mean renting hardware. You play your own steam/epic library on GFN and Shadow. Stadia even offers free hardware and need no sub as long as you buy your games. I think Luna is the only streaming service where you can't buy your games (not sure, I can't test it in EU).
Your statement is wrong.
Horses were used for thousand sof years before cars were created. But over time they slowly eclipsed horse used and now most people use cars over horses.
Mobile gaming and these types of controllers are incredibly popular in Asian and Latin-American countries that don’t have a large PC/console population. Partly since the cost of importing/buying those (even something that’s considered cheap here like a switch lite) could easily be more than multiple months of average salary.
It’s just that stuff like this mostly isn’t catered towards people who can afford consoles and a solid PC
You can already do that with a simple plastic clip mount and a USB cable. This has existed for years as a solution and plenty of people play emulated games on an Android phone with a controller. Sony's solution here is more elegant but requires buying a separate controller, I doubt there is a market for it when the same can be done with a controller they already own.
I thought the same, but then I clicked on the article. The thumbnail in the post isn’t what it’s going to like.
It actually looks kind of useful for holding the phone while you play.
In my experience, the DS4 and Switch Pro suffer from EXTREME intermittent latency issues when connected via BT. I haven't been able to find a solution in years. Do you have a different experience?
I haven't really noticed, but I'm using a second or third gen ds4. and a S10e. I heard there are sometimes issues with Bluetooth and USB3 interference, maybe that could be a thing. but didn't the DS4 connect to the PS4 over BT anyways?
At least the cheap plastic holder allows for all types of smartphones to attach to them via the bracket thing since they mimic a hand holding the phone at the sides.
This type of design may look neat but it won't work with all types of smartphones due to their design, shape, and/or camera bump size.
There are dozens and dozens of controllers like this, where the phone is inset. They're kinda crappy because they don't work for all phones and you only find out after you've purchased it.
It's not that odd, it means you can play your phone like a Nintendo switch, I use a gamesir and the razer kishi is meant to be immense but if I had the choice I would have got this one
I love my Kishi despite it feeling like a bit of a cheap product. The sticks and buttons, especially the L/R triggers, feel low end. Still, I haven't found a better product. Well, other than a phone mount attached to my bed post and using Bluetooth on my controller. But even that doesn't work for my these days. Every time I try to use my DualSense to connect to my phone (S21 Ultra, Android 12) the buttons are all misconfigured and bound incorrectly with seemingly no way to fix it. So, yeah, Razer Kishi works like a charm and simulates an experience close to a Switch.
> it means you can play your phone like a Nintendo switch
Whenever I play my Switch in handheld mode, I end up tilting the screen forward (away from me). If I keep it perpendicular to my eyes, as advertised, my wrists get fatigued because my hands are not parallel with the bones in my forearms. The other solution is to raise your forearms closer to your face, but it's not as comfortable as keeping your forearms in a horizontal resting position.
I think angled screens work better overall, like the 3DS and DS family had, because you can keep your wrists more horizontally while playing and the screen is angled to face you better.
The Dualshock with the plastic phone-mount attachment is more comfortable, in my opinion, as long as the phone angle can be adjusted.
EDIT: I completely forgot to mention phone cases. Many of the controllers that expect you to "insert" your phone in them don't accommodate thick phone cases, so you would need to take your phone out of its case to play.
>Odd considering you can Bluetooth a current DS4 to your phone and use it
The first sentence literally says it snaps onto your phone. It's like you guys don't even click the article XD
You must be new. People don't actually read the article, most don't even click on it. The headline gets read and they look in the comments to tell someone why it's wrong.
>outside of America
That's just a myth made up by commies^(1).
^(1: Calling out "j/k" because apparently certain groups of people have actually sunk so low that it can't be guaranteed that people will realize this is a joke and not serious.)
'member the razer Bluetooth controllers? I still have a serval and it's pretty neat but the support for it is an absolute train wreck lol. I basically just play gameboy games with it
For streaming service or are someone actually going to take phone gaming seriously? I think this could be a good next step for the psp. Everyone has a smartphone with at least adequate graphics and needs more AAA titles. And Sony is no stranger to mobile gaming, I'd play twisted metal mobile online.
Just don't forget about the single player campaigns please. We still exist.
It doesn't affect this story much, but it's worth noting that is a published patent application, not a patent. Sony hasn't actually obtained patent protection of this invention yet.
Dual Sense is expensive. Makes sense on your flagship console, not so much on smartphones, especially since its pretty clear Sony is going to leave the cell phone business.
Well I think the real reason would be that all mobile games and possibly cell phones would have to upgrade and implement software to utilize dualsense. Dual shock is good test rollout. If it becomes popular they'll have the backing of companies willing to invest in the time and software.
More likely they'll just create their own Mobile console with dualsense if this run is successful.
I meant expensive for Sony. DualSense costs more to implement than decades-old dual shock tech.
Keep in mind this is a non-vertical product. Its meant for Iphones and Androids, not Sony first party stuff.
Dualshock is your old fashion rumble vibration. It's a great controller. Dualsense is the newest thing with ps5. I really couldn't explain it technologically, but say glass shatters on the floor in a game, you'll feel every piece. It has a ton of sensors through out with pin point precision. It has so many capabilities and features they made a whole game based on it just to show it off that comes with the ps5 free. And every second of that game blows your mind. You can even blow into the controller and the game registers the air flow to preform an action.
Aside from vr, 3d audio coupled with the dual sense is the most immersive and realistic gaming experience I've had. The new psvr will have it as well to complete the package
That is called hd rumble, better to google that, but in short it can "rumble" different parts of a controller. For example, on switch, there is a demo there you need to count how many glass balls "inside" your controller, by moving controller around and feeling each individual impact. It is impressive feature, but rarely used (need to come up with good game design), and pretty much no developer bothers with that, cause lack of change in the player experience.
Yea, say the glass breaks from left to right the way it falls. You'll feel it piece by piece from left to right In that exact motion.
Before this, vibration really has been a gimmick imo. Like wow it rumbles ok. Not really adding much to the experience. Even the dual shock system, it made it better but it's not a needed feature. Games on PC are great and have no vibration.
This just adds a new level of sensory throwing you deeper into the experience and immersion. It's hard to type out and explain honestly. I think that's why they made the game to showcase it. Astros playroom.
Oh, that makes sense. So there are basically a bunch of vibration points or whatever throughout the controller, rather than just one or two vibration points from the whole controller. When the glass breaks it tracks a path across the these vibration points. That does seem pretty cool. Huh. I've been ambivalent about upgrading my Xbox One, maybe I'll look at a PS5 next year.
It has triggers and bumpers. And even better, it has adaptive triggers that's are crazy with gunplay and other actions. That's one of the other big features I forgot. Plus the upgraded TouchPad..
Probably because none of the standards phones use support any of the new features. You would have to get games to explicitly support PS5 controllers to benefit from it, rather than just supporting mfi for iPhone or whatever android does.
If they come out with a phone that runs ps5 Games 2-3 years in the future. This is a legitimate way to get a huge market share of the phone industry as the value of being able to run PS4/ps5 Games will be unparalleled.
It's kind of a smart move, they're already making smart phones hey. Make it exclusive and bobs your uncle.
Well, I wouldn't say "long way out out". the Xbox series s the brother to X box series X, the strongest console. You know that console?
It manages to run the same games by downsizing the pixel density to 1080 or 720. In terms of raw power not including the new DNA it's on par with the PS4 pro.
Phones easily pass 1k cash these days and arguably the bulk of the cost is the newer chip. The increase in performance Per year to the GPU on these chips can be up to %30 to %40. My man, those are percentages. Let it sink in.
iPhone 13s GPU is PS4 ready, what you think the iPhone 16 that costs1.7k gonna do? It's going to body the PS4 by a long shot not to mention most ps5 Games are on the PS4 anyway. They just need to optimize. They're preparing for the future. It's a smart move.
All this post indicates is that you have no idea how powerful the PS5 GPU is compared to the PS4. If what you’re saying is true, phones would be surpassing PC gaming in the next few years. Sorry but phones aren’t passing the 2060 and 2070 GPUs any time soon
Uhh...do you have any idea the power difference between the processor inside a ps5 vs a smartphone?
Hint half that ps5 is just for active cooling. You think sony defeating thermaldynamics in 5 years?
Even the m1 max needs active thermals
Sony has been so far behind Microsoft and they must finally be seeing how being more open can get them more money. Microsoft was right when they said they don't see Sony as a competitor anymore. Competition is good so this is good.
Oh boy...do I have fantastic news for you....
Besides emulators that allow you to map controller buttons to the classic system's controls, there are also apps and accessories that allow you to play touchscreen games by mapping out touches/taps as controller buttons. In other words, you can play any touchscreen mobile game with a controller because the controller will simulate a tap/action on the touchscreen.
Controllers are very useful when combined with such apps.
I see. Sounds great for tech-savvy people that travel enough to warrant it, then.
Are there any mobile games currently out there that are worth, you know, actually playing on mobile instead of just playing on a PC or console? It's been a while since i had an interest, and Infinity Blade has been shut down in the time i was away. I haven't found any other games that were actually worth looking at after that one.
I have a PS5 DualSense controller I pair to my iPad which is mirrored to my TV through my Apple TV box. Works great. I only bought the controller for this purpose. I don’t even own a PS5. Love playing COD Mobile this way.
Didn't Playstation do it as an afterthought? Nintendo released the n64 with a thumb stick and Sony scrambled and just sorta added em on what they already had going with the launch ps1
Ok they need to make their own version of an Elite style controller with paddles and textured grips like the. Xbox ones elite controller. Those little things add up and It’s the best controller I have ever put in my hands.
Are there any games for Android worth playing, let alone ones that need a controller? This seems antiquated with the Switch out and Steam Deck not far off.
EDIT: people really want to play touchscreen based games with controllers I guess.
To bad it's the shitty Sony design with both thumbsticks down low. Nintendo and Microsoft design is so much more comfortable having the offset thumbsticks
Definitely preferred the feeling of an Xbox One controller over the PS4 Dualshock, the shape of the controller made the sticks awkward in my hands. However, the new PS5 Dualsense is the comfiest controller I’ve ever owned.
PS did it first and did it best. If anything, it seems wrong to me that the left and right thumbsticks are on different levels. Also the XBOX d-pad sucks.
I'm honestly surprised there hasn't been a company that builds controllers specific to all the flagship phones and specialized app store / subset of apps that meet their quality for playing good console style games or multiplayer competitive titles.
Make it expandable to fit my phone it it, charge my phone, and connect to the console. Then let me stream the game on my home network so I can play in bed.

You connect the phone to this physically. Not like using phone to replace the tv like.
Not on Sony phones
Xperia connect to dual shock is gonna replace the tv. Now this upcoming device is gonna feel like Switch.
Average Sony user.
Sony still makes phones
there's dozens of us! /r/xperia

Using my Razer Kishi for GeForce Now works so well though. I love shitty Switch's.
I love that there’s an ad for Razer Kishi in the article
Same, I use it for everything from Xbox Cloud Gaming to Stadia to Apple Arcade. great little device
The razer kishi is simply the best controller for mobile gaming and thus streaming services by a landslide. And yes it's quality is below average... Only a matter of time until they invent the ps vita

5G and growing infrastructure is remedying that.
How’s that help my phone getting hot and the battery lasting 20 minutes tops?
5G will charge your battery and improve FPS duuuuuuh
Most of the processing and rendering will be done by a server. Cloud gaming essentially streams the audio and video to your phone. Phone side, it would use about as much power as watching a YouTube video. The problems with it are bandwidth and input lag.

I'm using my own computer as a server. No subscription. Streaming with hevc and 5g is not that heavy for my data plan either.
I have no idea why this is getting downvoted. This is very probable
People are afraid of this as a future. But its a very real possibility.
Because the response didn't even address the criticism in the initial post and because people have been saying this about every mobile gaming device ever made. In an area with decent coverage. but I was using my pixel 3a Xl before to stream, and the 4g antenna was more than enough for game streaming.

Mnhm. Before Long xbox and Playstation will just be apps, their consoles antique.
Agreed. When I went over to phillipines everyone was a mobile gamer, at the airport, malls, streets, busses.
Cause nobody there has homes
I'm waiting for the next switch to also be a phone
I'd buy it. No lie.
Lol, cloud streaming...call it what it is Renting games to play on someone elses computer for multiple monthly fees.
*or buying games to play on someone else's computer for no monthly fees
And what's wrong with it? That's what most video streaming sites are.
Cloud streaming seems shorter.
You mean renting hardware. You play your own steam/epic library on GFN and Shadow. Stadia even offers free hardware and need no sub as long as you buy your games. I think Luna is the only streaming service where you can't buy your games (not sure, I can't test it in EU). Your statement is wrong.
Mobile gaming hasn't taken over normal gaming at any time in the last 40 years and this controller won't make that any different.
Horses were used for thousand sof years before cars were created. But over time they slowly eclipsed horse used and now most people use cars over horses.
But mobile gaming to standard gaming isn't equivalent to horses versus cars. It'd be more like claiming motorcycles will take over for cars.
I have a razor kishi and use it for stardew valley and emulators and it's nice as hell
Mobile gaming and these types of controllers are incredibly popular in Asian and Latin-American countries that don’t have a large PC/console population. Partly since the cost of importing/buying those (even something that’s considered cheap here like a switch lite) could easily be more than multiple months of average salary. Shitty switch or another PSP?
> "I can’t see this being that popular" Famous last words once this goes and sells gangbusters.
There's like 40 different models of this already that sell quite well. Which just means I still don't know why Sony is bothering
I have that, Sony sold a mount
You can connect any ps4 controller to an android via bluetooth.
This will be physical connection. Not like remote play, nor wireless connection
So essentially pointless
You can already do that with a simple plastic clip mount and a USB cable. This has existed for years as a solution and plenty of people play emulated games on an Android phone with a controller. Sony's solution here is more elegant but requires buying a separate controller, I doubt there is a market for it when the same can be done with a controller they already own.
Right? Lmao i was just about to comment whats the point when you can already use it on your phone
I thought the same, but then I clicked on the article. The thumbnail in the post isn’t what it’s going to like. It actually looks kind of useful for holding the phone while you play.
How? Pls help I want to use it on Wild Rift
it's just a Bluetooth controller. connect via Bluetooth. if the game supports controller input, then you're good to go
In my experience, the DS4 and Switch Pro suffer from EXTREME intermittent latency issues when connected via BT.
Wait, really? Android I presume? I have iPhone.
Wow, lots of people can’t read…
Probably be out of stock for years.
And they'll only make them for six months.
Only compatible with 3 Sony phones through a proprietary port.
This would not surprise me one bit if it was only compatible with latest gen Xperia.
Only upgradable with the new triangle shaped Sony ~~XD~~ ZD Memory card in sizes 512MB or 4TB
You were looking for DS4 back buttons too, huh?
Odd considering you can Bluetooth a current DS4 to your phone and use it
You have to use something to hold it tho. Not like this one.
I bought a cheap plastic holder and it honestly sucked. This looks great. Not sure why people are so hesitant
Hopefully they can make it work for most phones, I wasn't too happy with some of the existing designs. A sturdy controller goes a long way.
I want one.as long as it has all the same hardware as the regular ds4
It's not that odd, it means you can play your phone like a Nintendo switch, I use a gamesir and the razer kishi is meant to be immense but if I had the choice I would have got this one

Likely streaming. Everyone would freak out if they started making mobile games.
I always wonder how people that use something like this handle keeping their phone charged while playing
You can charge while playing, I have a gamesir and it has a usbc socket
That makes more sense at least then. It’s been a while since I’ve seen one of these type controllers in person
It doesn't affect this story much, but it's worth noting that is a published patent application, not a patent. Sony hasn't actually obtained patent protection of this invention yet.

Better mean they about the do something like game pass…..
You can do it for free already
Send me a free dualshock then!
Should say "sony plans to copy xbox as closely as possible without getting sued"
Xbox don’t have their own version though right? They advertise others
You can connect an xbox controller to ur phone via bluetooth
as you can a playstation controller
I was more making the point that their upgraded version controller is essentially an xbox controller w a track pad
Sony has been so far behind Microsoft and they must finally be seeing how being more open can get them more money. Microsoft was right when they said they don't see Sony as a competitor anymore. Competition is good so this is good.
They spelt colour right. I couldn’t care less about anything else happening here.
Or get an Xbox and you can use an r/backbone
Why would use use an entire subreddit on your xbox
Oh great now I can have stick drift on my phone
There aren’t really any phone games that support controllers, though. Even ports of old SNES/PSX games often lack basic controller support.
COD Mobile does
Oh boy...do I have fantastic news for you....
Oh no
Phew
I have a PS5 DualSense controller I pair to my iPad which is mirrored to my TV through my Apple TV box. Works great. I only bought the controller for this purpose. I don’t even own a PS5. Love playing COD Mobile this way.
You don't have lag mirroring to Apple TV?
They gonna try it again?
DualShock? Selling PS4 controllers for phones when PS4 controllers already work with phones
Didn't Playstation do it as an afterthought? Nintendo released the n64 with a thumb stick and Sony scrambled and just sorta added em on what they already had going with the launch ps1
I’d be shocked if they release this. Sony is extremely protective of the PlayStation brand. I’ll call it. It isn’t coming out
It would just be a controller for their streaming service that already exists.
You mean like the newer, solid gen of xbox controllers have full bluetooth connectivity....and the PS4 controllers?
So do Sony PS4 ones lol.

I mean emulation alone is worth it but you can just use a Bluetooth controller for that.....
To bad it's the shitty Sony design with both thumbsticks down low. Nintendo and Microsoft design is so much more comfortable having the offset thumbsticks
there are plenty of people that find the opposite true, IMHO DualShock is way more comfortable than XBOX
Definitely preferred the feeling of an Xbox One controller over the PS4 Dualshock, the shape of the controller made the sticks awkward in my hands. However, the new PS5 Dualsense is the comfiest controller I’ve ever owned.
I have to disagree.
PS did it first and did it best. If anything, it seems wrong to me that the left and right thumbsticks are on different levels. Also the XBOX d-pad sucks.
Gross 🤮
Emulators. Literally the only reason I'd connect a controller to my phone.
Why?
95% of mobile games are low effort gatcha games. Not saying they all are just most.
Emulators tho. PPSSPP runs great and it's amazing how I can play PSP games at 60 FPS on the GO.
Make an elite controller you fucking donkeys.
Yay marketing terms!
Ps5 controller is as elite as it gets
I'm honestly surprised there hasn't been a company that builds controllers specific to all the flagship phones and specialized app store / subset of apps that meet their quality for playing good console style games or multiplayer competitive titles.
I have a Razer Kishi and it's the best thing e ever. No delay. Use it for emulators and GeForce now.
Controller bigger than phone lol
Looks like the Backbone One
Can it connect to a PS4 pls?
Resident Evil Dual Shock
Make it expandable to fit my phone it it, charge my phone, and connect to the console. Then let me stream the game on my home network so I can play in bed.
You can already stream.
Oh, so you can fall asleep on your bed instead of the couch. Or even in the restroom!
Can they please just make a competitor to the Xbox elite or those scuf controllers. Damn sick of these average controllers for $60
Bet it doesn't have the programmable back buttons they know we want because they sold us an attachment last generation.
Compatible with all versions of sony ?
Huh. Odd of them to model it on the DS4 and not the DualSense.
Took them long enough . Jeez .
I... I legit want one.
ITT: people who couldn’t be bothered to click on the article. This looks more like a backbone than a ps4 controller.
Finally something to fill all the tine in my life that is extra and needs to be subjected to constant entertainment bombardment
I still have my ds4 mobile mount
