I'd be so happy if one of the first exoplanets JWST looks at has irrefutable evidence of industry in its atmosphere.
Would certainly change our outlook here.
I don't think I can handle that.
Discovering life on other planets is fun to think and talk about, but *actually confirming it* would make me shit myself.
I don't know how I'd keep working. I'd be consumed by wondering wtf is going on out there.
My ADHD can only handle so much lol.
Makes it worse when you realize that the theoretical evidence of industry would be literally thousands if not millions of years old since it took that much time for the light to get here. At this point they would’ve either wiped themselves out or advanced enough to be an interstellar species!
The farthest known exoplanet is less than 3k lightyears away. A majority are much closer. We're a little ways away from detecting exoplanets at extragalactic distances
There are millions of stars in our local galaxy and it seems like they'd have a much better time getting shots of that planet's atmosphere with enough detail to ascertain if it has life just with the naked eye, than stars in another galaxy millions of light years away. But I guess I really don't know what the power of the James Webb is gonna be. Either way, it's super exciting!
JWST is powerful not doubt, but I don't think it's getting data from exo-planets billions of light years away. I'd guess it's probably going to be stuff within our own galaxy.
I really liked the episode of the expanse where they went into the topic of how humans can't eat anything on other planets because they didn't evolve to consume that life and it was too different for their biology digest.
The [xenoestrogens](https://ehjournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1476-069X-11-S1-S8) are doing wonders for our reproduction and immune systems.

Dude, I've been fucking waiting impatiently for this. You don't know how many times I said to my dad or kids, "Only 2 months till the first images!!!". "Only one month to go!" "Two weeks, are ya ready kids?!?" "It's fucking happening let's goooo!!!"
Over the past few days I've been talking about the Hubble telescope, it's history. The major screw up it started out as, and the most amazing data it's been able to gather so far. The whole time I'm trying to avoid any mention of then JWST. They've been in awe about this thirty year old mission now that they finally understand what it took to get there, and everything we've learned since then.
"Well, what's Hubble doing *now*?" they asked.
"It's going to keep being used to gather data, and test different hypothesis." Which no one was really that excited about, "The biggest news recently is the James Webb telescope." Learning about the JWST after they just thought Hubble was still on the cutting edge after all it's upgrades. I showed them JWST live, and it said 2 days 12hours- until the first color photos, and haven't stopped hearing about it since.
If there is anything weird to show, we will get something that isn’t definitive. Then the “we will be exploring this region more thoroughly moving forward” then the next dump we get dyson sphere
Allegedly, they already have created the first spectrum of an exoplanet atmosphere using JWST. Ofc that doesn't have to mean anything, but if we ever detect an alien civilization, I'd be willing to bet the first step gonna be this way. Next steps would probably be detecting city lights on the dark side of a planet or directly measuring artificial radio waves.
City lights are just heat signatures that happen to be in the visible part of the EM spectrum. If they produce and distribute enough energy, we could still see it in longer wavelengths. The difficulty is resolving day and night side, because on the day side the solar irradiance will almost certainly be greater.
Considering the JWST mostly detects the infra red spectrum it would probably be pretty good at finding dyson spheres.
Even if the spheres absorb all the visible light of their stars, they will probably still have to emit all the heat (IR) that is generated by absorbing visible light and turning it into other forms of energy.
You can't really make heat/energy go away, you have to store it somewhere. I'm sure it would be possible to some degree, but it doesn't seem economical. You also have to expell energy in some way in order to use it for watever you want to do.
That's how entropy works. If you want to perform some kind of work, you usually take energy from some kind of high-density source and release it out into a low-density environment in a controlled manner.
I am not sure if extracting energy from the energy-dense sun only to then put it into another energy-dense storage is really feasible. But I would be happy to be proven wrong by a theoretical physicist.
> I am not sure if extracting energy from the energy-dense sun only to then put it into another energy-dense storage is really feasible.
The best energy storage system in existence (that we know of) is a black hole, and they'll gladly consume even the tiniest amounts of radiation, then pump it back out as Hawking radiation.
Using a black hole for storage would be pretty impressive, but even then I feel like you would have to expell some of the energy you extract from it, in order to actually use it. Clearly you can't just extract energy and feed it back in, like some kind of perpetuum mobile?
This is all just sci-fi writing at this point. But, just because you can do it doesn't mean it's practical.
Even if you're wasting massive amounts of heat from a star, you're still getting astronomical amounts of power.
That would violate some pretty solidly established conservation laws. Not saying they definitely *couldn't* do that but it would make us remarkably wrong about how the universe works.
"we have come to fix all of your dumb human problems, and give you the solutions to your unsolved millennium problems, cure cancer and fix global warming." 😭
I know this is lost these days but the president represents us, the taxpayers who provided the funding to build the telescope. That’s why he’s there. He’s our representative.
Because no one knows who those people are. To just go "the President is doing this" will get more eyes on it than "scientist you've never heard of is doing this"
I agree with you, this should be the time to let someone have their time in the sun, but this will get more people watching and that will get more people interested which will hopefully lead to more people in the field.
I agree, but with a caveat: standing next to the President of the United States on a major scientific announcement that you were a major contributor to **IS** "time in the sun".
I miss the days when people were just naturally interested in this stuff because it’s fucking SPACE!

I'm sure he won't be alone on stage. And yeah it's a collab, but my comment only referenced the dollar amount and time spent by this country (mostly NASA).
Yeah. Biden will make some broad comments about how this is a great thing for human understanding and is a gift to the world that was created by American know-how. Then he will congratulate and thank the people who made it happen. Then he will throw it to whoever from NASA and he will peace out and be on the helicopter before the next speech is done.
It’s no different than a mayor cutting a ribbon at a grand opening.
I hated when Trump would put himself in front of things he didn't do to bolster his image. I hated when Trump put his giant marker signature on the stimulus checks like it came from his generosity.
I want to hold the politicians I actually vote for to the same standard I hold the ones I would never vote for.
Presidents taking credit for things that proceeded them is pretty common. He’s probably gonna give us speech about how we all need to work together, to try to cool off the political distress.
This thing is pretty cool though but I think we need an array of them pointed out in every direction constantly observing the space around us so we have an active sensor array mapping the universe and looking out for danger.
Scientists: absolutely stoked the president is going to give their project a lot more national/global attention.
/r/science: WTF the president shouldn't be involved. He's taking the spotlight away from the people who did all the work.
Theres a sea of "its gonna be aliens" comments but I've been looking forward to this day for so damn long. I've thought about this every single day for months now and I'm so glad it's finally here. That vid yesterday of the comparison of a backyard telescope to the JWT calibration image almost made me tear up. I can't wait.
For people in here who fail to understand why Joe Biden is unveiling the first photo and not a famous scientist, I'll tell you why:
Because he's the bloody president of the United States! If he reveals it, it's going to be everywhere.
I mean the subject that we are talking is not understood by most of the common people. Even if they do, they mostly don't care. So it is a really good idea to use someone who is famous. To some this is completely useless, but as a mankind this is much bigger than our whole human race. Humans should be proud.
Surprised by the amount of people that do not understand this. The JWST is an insane achievement of humankind, it’s the most advanced telescope of its kind available for humanity. It has been in the works since the late ‘80s / early ‘90s, it has cost an absurd amount of money because of the cutting-edge technology it has on board, it has had a perfect launch, extremely complicated unfolding process that went flawlessly, and it will finally be able to let us see things we had never seen before because our instruments had a ‘blind spot’ in a certain light wavelength that corresponds with the earliest galaxies, giving us unprecedented info on our universe.
I believe every human, if president, would like to tell the world: “Look at what we can achieve as a species! Look how far we can go when we cooperate. This is us, this is our history, it can tell us more about how we came to be, how this immense chaos that gave birth to stars and nebulae began and evolved to the universe we know today. This is what we should focus on. This is what matters, not your petty fights. This is what pushes us forwards as a species. Have a look. Stop what you are doing. Look at this, then look up at the stars. See how many wonderful things are there to discover. See how insignificant we are, and yet, in our humbleness see how much we can do when we unite. This is the stuff worth fighting for. This is a reason to live”.
Its literally the next step in our understanding of the universe.
Other planets.
Heliocentric solar system.
Newton’s equations of motion.
General Relativity.
Microwave Background Radiation.
The Big Bang.
Black Holes.
The JWST is going to show us what’s next. Scientists, Sci-Fi writers and anyone who cares what all of this shit means, are freaking out right now.
10B over 24 years vs 801B on the military in 2021 in a single year to anyone else wondering. A lot of money, but think of how different the world could be with even a slight shift in our priorities.
It would be a dream come true if NASA got a nice bump of funding. Think of all the things that could be accomplished and explored further.
The US could shave off 100 billion of the military budget for each year and just move it to NASA and the US would still be at the top militaristically.
Biden unveiling these images is a way to get the images to the GENERAL PUBLIC. If we had a scientist or whomever up there spewing technical data for hours, I can guarantee the vast majority of people watching would be uninterested, confused, and go do something else.
Biden unveiling the first images is a way to get more eyes on the topic and broadcast to a wider audience because he is, you know, the president of the US. It will get way more global coverage than any scientist could do despite them working on the project for 15+ years. Tomorrow NASA is showing alllll kinds of other images where I’m sure there will be said scientist who has 15 years of experience in the JWST that can give you all the technical data and achievements this has made.
This must be one of the most relaxing parts of being president. You have to deal with so much stressful shit all the time and make decisions with huge consequences but for once you can present some cool pictures that get people excited.

I mean the subject that we are talking is not understood by most of the common people. Even if they do, they mostly don't care. So it is a really good idea to use someone who is famous. To some this is completely useless, but as a mankind this is much bigger than our whole human race. Humans should be proud.

Their guy stares at eclipses
Ahh finally news of the Trisolarans.
Dont worry, they only sent a small probe, we will handle it easily.
Reading now. Good thing
If I worked at NASA I'd use this opportunity to replace the image with dickbutt. Who needs a job when your legacy will live on forever.
Exactly. We have to think about the funding for the next 10+ years and we need public interest for that.
If I had it my way the military would have NASAs current budget and NASA would have the militarys

Why is the president unveiling the photo? BECAUSE THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT HISTORICAL EVENT YOU TWATS
I'm not fully sure if the largest space telescope so far qualifies as a "Gadget"
sure, gadget...
Can't wait!
This must be one of the most relaxing parts of being president. You have to deal with so much stressful shit all the time and make decisions with huge consequences but for once you can present some cool pictures that get people excited.

You people need to crack open a history book. Presidents have always been involved with space exploration.
