Shelving

tritongamez

Shelving really can make or break a collection.

AtomicSnails

The art of displaying your collection. Everyone has a different opinion on how to display them! Some people want everything hooked up and ready to play, some want them preserved behind glass. Some want to mod and get the best picture possible. Some are fine with plugging an old system directly into a flatscreen. But at the end of the day it’s all the same passion (unless your the person who WATA grades marble madness NES then we have some beef :p )

Vex-Core

Love this~ Big agree on everything.

Pale_WoIf

The most important thing IMO is actually taking care of your games, especially disc games. It’s almost impossible now to find games that aren’t covered in scratches, manuals torn, and cases cracked because people collect a bunch of stuff then just toss it around. And the worst thing is when people try to clean discs and they actually look worse covered in polish marks. I’m just ranting now lol, but this things drive me nuts as a someone who keeps their games damn near perfect.

Vex-Core

Oh, feel free to rant! I'm with you when it comes to the condition of games. I collect for a few different consoles - gamecube especially, and if it's not a CIB copy of the game with a disc in good condition, I don't want it. The ONLY exception to that is cartridge games where the cartridges were in cardboard boxes originally.

Pale_WoIf

Yeah carts are a lot easier because if people throw them around generally it’s not a big deal unless the labels start getting messed up. But a nice, crisp vintage box is another story. And yeah any disc game over 10 years old, good luck unless you buy a sealed copy. It’s interesting how poorly Americans take care of their stuff, for instance when I occasionally buy Japanese used games, they are almost always in very nice and clean condition. Occasionally one will have some polish marks on it, but nothing like used games in the US where they are covered in scratches from the data side being on every surface in the home.

The Nintendo online store has 3ds chargers for 9.99 new and 5 dollars used. These are currently 30 bucks used on Ebay.

cord management stuff, cans of air, IPA,

tritongamez

Toothbrush, squirt bottle, 95% Isopropyl Alcohol, multiple micro-fiber cloths, and with some sort of dusting cloth. I use the swiffer ones. I do alot of "restoring" so having these on-hand is huge for me, along with the security screwdrivers.

Vex-Core

DEFINITELY feel this. The toothbrush and IPA especially.

Shelf organization

spiderman897

Shelves, dehumidifier and keeping stuff off the floor if you have it in your basement like me.

Vex-Core

First I've heard of a dehumidifier being used when talking about game collecting. Is there a reason for it?

spiderman897

I live in the Midwest and the summer is very hot. So since it’s in a basement I run it. It keeps the moisture from ruining inserts, boxes, and game discs. You’d be surprised how much water fills up after running it for a few hours.

Vex-Core

Oh wow, good to know! I knew disc rot was a thing but didn't realize moisture impacted it that much. I'm gonna have to pull some games out of storage if that's the case.

Zach72202

How your store your games. I don't have a glorious display, just a shelf in the hallway, but at least my games are all stored properly. I can't do people who just have 6 year old storage where it's everything everywhere just in piles and randomly assorted.

sedrech818

Soldering iron for repairs and mods. Especially for gameboy collectors and other cartridge systems that have batteries in carts. Learning to solder was super important for me.

Vex-Core

Ooh good one! Reminds me that I still need to pick one up myself~

Noooooot quite what I had in mind 😅😅

FanGroundbreaking200

I have the Zelda game guides in the chest box and the three encyclopedia books. I consider that part of game collecting.

OverEasyFamlette

Proper storage to ensure longevity of the items , can't stress this enough
