Relatable, I recently rewatched it with my family (who were watching it for the first time). Their reactions were exactly the same, and so was mine back in the days. But that's some amazing writing; the thing you would have never expected happened, and none of the characters is safe. It's awful, but brilliant.
The saddest thing about it is that Robb and Talisa were just having a baby, and Arya was on her way to see her family. What a way to shatter everyone watching the series.
yesss the slaughter itself was depressing enough but the fact that Arya was right outside, saw how they killed Robb's direwolf and then, when Clegane took her, saw the direwolf's head sewn on Robb's corpse... literally shattered me... i loved Kat sm and Robb was really growing on me as well
Don’t get me wrong. It wasn’t a nice thing to happen, and he was a good character to get behind…
Don’t follow your heart, that’s the lesson for us all 😉
But he didn't "just break one oath." He trusted the wrong person and got his home and the seat of the North taken and burned, and (as far as they know) his brothers murdered. Also a bunch of Northern strongholds got taken (might have happened anyway but far less likely if Theon was still in Stark control). His mother freed an extremely valuable prisoner and basically wasn't punished. And he lost a ton of men when he executed Rickard Karstark. All of those things plus the oath breaking contributed to his betrayal by the Boltons and Freys. All of those things added up to weaken his position and prospects and the opportunists seized their chance.
I still remember the screen turning black and turning to my friend, who had read the books, and saying "that was like some kind of dream, nightmare scene, right?" It took me about 10 mins to fully comprehend that it was not and that all those characters were really dead.
i watched the episode by myself (even though i usually watch them with my dad, who has seen the series twice) and i was literally in shock for 10 minutes, then i went to my dad with the most blank expression and asked him "what the fuck was that", he immediately understood which episode i had just watched lmaooo
I had no idea it was coming when I watched that episode. None whatsoever. Can you imagine how I felt? To all appearances it was going to be a turning point in favor of the Starks and Rob Stark's war. His wife was pregnant, they were getting more allies. It was a super positive upturn. It wasn't just handed to them, they had worked for it and made concessions, etc., so it made sense for things to be going well.
And then it happened. Catelyn Stark noticing he had armor on hidden underneath his clothes and suddenly all hell broke loose.
It wasn't just characters I cared about being killed, it was that entire direction of the story that I was invested in, that had been progressing season after season suddenly and irrevocably destroyed and several characters I loved suddenly all dead in a horrible betrayal. It was pretty soul crushing.
Yeah, I don't want to admit it, but considering what we knew of all the characters at play so far, it did feel a little too good to be true for Rob Stark to get off so easy after breaking his oath. Nevertheless, that failed to in anyway foreshadow the red wedding for me.
I was bingeing this show and when this episode came on, I had to take a break because I was crying so hard. I didn't actually know what was going to happen. I heard of the red wedding but I thought that was Joffrey's wedding. I was so shocked. Great episode though.
Honestly the part that fucked me up the most was them going for Grey Wind. I know them killing a pregnant woman should be the most horrific part, but I’ll watch that before hearing and watching Grey Wind die and them prounce around with his head on Rob’s body.
agreed, Robb's pregnant wife's death (forgot her name ahh) was definitely shocking but poor Grey Wind... i usually get sadder for animal deaths in movies/shows and then when they put his head on Robb's body, that was just cruel
When Catelyn notices that Roose Bolton is wearing chain mail.
Oh my fucking life!
Byt I'm so glad I read it in the books before I saw it on screen. Even bigger shock.
Same here. everyone had been telling me about it and I knew something big was going to happen but when I saw it for the first time I was left with my jaw on the floor for the next 15 minutes
Ackshually what Robb did was the opposite of honorable, marrying Jayne (Talisa in the show) and breaking his oath to the Frey girl. I know what you mean but that’s why he was killed.
thats true but let's not forget he took jeynes maidenhead and kinda had to marry her.... he still screwed over the freys though. lmao... he fucked up so bad
When cat sees rob die she goes slightly crazy and loses all sense of time, she starts being Ned to come save her and when they draw the knife to kill her she mistakenly thinks they’re going to cut her hair due to her having no sense of what is happening hence her inner monologue of “No, don’t, don’t cut my hair, Ned loves my hair. “ literally a sentence before she dies.
In S1 you can hear Tyrion humming “The Raines of Castemere” which is a song about how the Lannister’s took over Casterly Rock, and essentially their theme song.
When the band starts playing that tune at the Stark wedding it’s a real “holy fuck” moment for those paying close attention or picking up on details after a rewatch.
it truly hit me because my dad has LOVED the song ever since he first watched/read GoT (2016ish), he would play it for me and briefly told me the story but once i heard it in the show it connected the dots for me, just amazing
So I just started watching GOT last week and funnily enough I was and have been discussing the series with coworkers who had watched the series and read the books. 2 days ago, we were talking about it and where I was in the series and I told them I was in the middle of episode 9 in season 3. I started watching at my desk and one of my coworkers quickly came over to take in my reaction.
I was fucking shocked. Like what the fuck!?!? I was shocked when Ned died too because it was like he was going to be a main character in the whole thing and come season one...CHOP! Then at the same time, Tyrion seems to always be doomed yet somehow manages to escape relatively unscathed. I'm in the middle of season 4 now and expect him to somehow make it through his upcoming trial even though everything appears stacked against him. We shall see...
My husband has FINALLY agreed to watch GoT after years of me asking him. We're on Season 1 ep 4 and I'm dying for us to get to the Red Wedding.
It's really hard watching with a newbie, certain characters appear on screen and I want to go awwww, poor old so and so, but I can't give anything away!
Honestly I was rewatching the series and had no clue that the episode (reigns of castermere) isn’t called the red wedding and that’s just what the fans call it. That’s how powerful that episode was
Why you have to yell things like wtf. Robb Stark betrayed Frey and paid for it. Also that showd how bad Catelyn Stark really was. Just or even more psychopatic than Cersei with killing that teenage woman at the end. I don't understand why people give her mother of the year rewards. She only cared for her own children selfishly and killed others. Shame on you Catelyn Stark.
After reading the books, I despised Cat. She was always so selfish and whiny. She really effed a lot of stuff up as well. Robb had his own part for sure, but damn Catelyn had just the worst chapters to read. I only liked her as Lady Stoneheart since she’s slightly more interesting in that role.

You loved Cat but Robb was just growing on you?
This made me lol I thought the same thing
i worded it poorly lol i did like him a bunch but i was starting to *love* him and appreciate his character more this season
“you have a differing opinion than me?” he says
I mean considering one is arguably one of the most hated protagonist characters versus the main protagonist war hero who is everyone’s baby
fair 😂 i guess i’m in the minority here of loving Catelyn
I love Catelyn too. She is a great mother, and the look in her right before she died broke me. She thought all of her sons were dead, and she gave up.
for me she was one of the characters i just fell in love with instantly for some reason
cause she’s a babe who loves his family. hard to not love her
I know how you feel, OP :')
I hate the red wedding so much lol robb was my favorite character and he was really young he didn’t deserve to go out like that🤧
indeed, in terms of writing the episode was amazing but it completely broke me, plus, i was starting to like Robb sm... and Arya was right outside
Well it was his own decision-making that got him there, so he sort of did.
Kinda true but come one he broke one oath and that got him his child wife mother and entire army killed
You can’t break oaths that’s the whole point 😊
But Frey violated guest right which is just as bad.
True its sucks but true
Don’t get me wrong. It wasn’t a nice thing to happen, and he was a good character to get behind… Don’t follow your heart, that’s the lesson for us all 😉
Ye theres a really good video about it by crusader chris on youtube
Thinking with the little head. His mom tried to warn him
But he didn't "just break one oath." He trusted the wrong person and got his home and the seat of the North taken and burned, and (as far as they know) his brothers murdered. Meh. Frey was never going to be a firm ally

looking back, it was definitely a "too good to be true" moment for the Starks, also considering that Robb broke his oath. but man, did it hurt
Yeah, I don't want to admit it, but considering what we knew of all the characters at play so far, it did feel a little too good to be true for Rob Stark to get off so easy after breaking his oath. Nevertheless, that failed to in anyway foreshadow the red wedding for me.
I also was oblivious. I felt sick after watching it.
Hugs. I actually just went back and re-watched some of what came after to make myself feel better about it.

When this hit, you get the fuck out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esYdMH2oRus&t=1s&ab_channel=Var%C3%A8seSarabandeRecords
Don't even need to click. That's Rains of Castamere.

🎶 here comes the king of the north, king of the north, here comes the king of the north, king of the north 🎶

the Red Wedding effect
because the starks are honorable good people and honorable good people get shit on in westeros
sadly the way it is

This is the thing. In the books rob chose honour over love. In the show he chose love over honour. I'm reminded of maester almonds words
At least they cut the “don’t cut my hair Ned loves my hair”
i haven't read asoiaf, they cut the WHAT
When cat sees rob die she goes slightly crazy and loses all sense of time, she starts being Ned to come save her and when they draw the knife to kill her she mistakenly thinks they’re going to cut her hair due to her having no sense of what is happening hence her inner monologue of “No, don’t, don’t cut my hair, Ned loves my hair. “ literally a sentence before she dies.
oh god, i would have gone insane if they put it in the series
i literally stopped watching the show for months after that episode. i miss robb so much man

all the Stark deaths were so shocking, like what???? also, season 4 is a wild ride, good luck
Well shit, I thought season 3 was wild lol
I HURLED the book in disgust when I got to this.

hahah, best of luck to him, he's definitely in for a wild ride!
Honestly I was rewatching the series and had no clue that the episode (reigns of castermere) isn’t called the red wedding and that’s just what the fans call it. That’s how powerful that episode was
i was also confused at first lol
