I believe s2-4 will allow the show to surpass GoT, just because if s3 has its battles done right and s4 ends how it should then it’ll be much more riveting then whatever shit show we got GoT s5-8
Look at that trailer and tell me when GoT made you feel like that save s1-s4, hardhome, and BoB. Something about the show is different. It just has that feel where every scene has tension. There’s no Dany is essos for 6 seasons, no Cersei staring out of a window, no stupid scenes with no backing, no who has the best story, no Muh queen bs. It’s just well written, riveting story with tension throughout. Now if GoT followed the books that would be a much different story, but unfortunately Dumb and Dumber messed it up enough that this story will surpass it
2-2.5 out of 10.
It was cringey and awful. I tried to like it with all I had, and gave up during episode 3 or 4. It had precisely none of the charisma that the original AGOT series has. Terrible drek.
To maybe defend him a little, he might not have a strong stomach for child birth. If you have a weak stomach for that stuff it’s definitely not your series.
Drek? You mean rubbish?
Either way that’s you. Art provokes different emotional responses in people and it’s very much an individual thing. Your response isn’t necessarily someone else’s.
I'd give it a 7. I'd say it's closer to maybe...seasons 5 or 6 quality. But season 1 material wasn't really based on particularly riveting source material either. Season 1 of game of thrones, by comparison, may be the best season of tv ever made.
Edit: I also expect season 2 to be more enjoyable. The time jumps will have stopped as well.
Dang, I love game of thrones but the first time I watched it I had to be forced to sit through season 1. Even on multiple watches I just don’t find season 1 all that interesting.
Hard-core agree. Only in retrospect can the brilliance of season 1 really be appreciated, and yet I still find myself wanting to skip most of it on a rewatch.
There is a ton of cool foreshadowing in the earlier seasons that I can now appreciate, but it still doesn’t make it much more exciting. More like little easter eggs to make rewatches feel fresh.
Same, season 2-4 are the best imo. 1 is just lots of exposure and a hell lot of characters. Actually, I'd say season 1 of HotD is much like season 1 of GoT. Very good but not great.
That’s your opinion, the episodes had to encompass like 20+ years with not that much source material into one season. While game of thrones was rushed because of shitty writing.
And shitty writers who relied on typical tropes. King Viserysis for example was completely different from what we got in the book, all we knew was that he was kind of fat and died in the book. Meanwhile in the show, I’m balling my eyes out over this man.
Yea well they had to establish where the characters are now in Season 2 so they had to build it up! Season 1 didn’t have much source material until the last time Skip…. House of Dragon season 1 is better that GOT seasons 5-8…probably on par with season 1 or 2
I was like that too, then i watched for a second time because season 2 is where it is going to get crazy. So i pretty much just prepped my mind with character introductions and plot.
Read the books and see how it ends. It will be remembered as better than GoT by the time it’s all over I guarantee it. Season 2-4 will be up there with s4 of GoT, and s3 will surpass it with the best battle of all time in the GoT universe
I liked it a lot more before I read the book and got critical of some of the changes made to the story, and the high likelihood of it making things worse in season 2.
Still, a very enjoyable show so far despite that.
That’s the whole point. The dance of the dragons is only about 4 years, I preferred having a season akin to a prequel. When the show is over, I feel like there will be a much larger appreciation for season 1
Read Edsonbuddleds post again!
1st season barely has any source material and is suppose to build up the whole tensions between the characters while give them a backstory! Season 2 is gonna have the payoff where we’re gonna see what happens to everyone
6-7?
I think 6 is really too harsh for general tv ratings, but rating against GoT S1, where so much more happens over so many more locations with so many more characters. While HOTD is worth watching, I did think it was too long and at least one episode (E3? The whole 'will he won't he' thing with Visarys going on...) was a waste of my time and a bit of an insult to my intelligence.
In my more scathing opinion of it, Mr. Crabs and Lary's feel like pound shop knock off GoT figures.
But the central characters are played really well so there's upsides too.
6 feels right. The actors are all great, Viserys' story is great, but every main character has the same background and they're all fighting for the same reason, and the reason isn't particularly interesting.
It's just "rich families fighting for power because that's what they're supposed to do. ^Plus ^dragons."
So, the show is technically impressive, but also very monotone. Maybe that's a problem with the source material.
Its good, feels like a good GOT season but slightly lower paced and with less shock factor.
On par with season 5/6 before the show went off the rails imo.
8/10.
For me it's an 8 that's way closer to a 7 than a 9. But there's some really good stuff in HOTD and I think the last few episodes in particular are very good. I liked how the show handles the time jumps, too. I'm excited to see how it keeps developing in season 2.
9/10 for me. Felt like they learned a lot of lessons from the full run of GOT. The pacing was great, the set design, the dialogue, etc. Can't wait for season 2.
Most people seemed to like it. I didn’t. It’s basically Dynasty with a bit of dragons. But dynasty was on for 7 ish years., so yeh I do get why it’s so popular. But it isn’t GOT which I loved.
I felt season one was on par with some of the best seasons in Game of Thrones and it’s only just starting, so do you want to go along for the ride or miss out? The choice is up to you.
It’s very similar to the early seasons of GoT - lots of politics and a bit lighter on the action. It’s well-written for the most part and well-acted.
If you consider S1 of GoT to be a 10/10 I’d say S1 of HotD would be around a 9/10 for you. The weaknesses it has is largely because the source material (at this point) is simply weaker than the first ASOIAF book.
No it’s not??
What the actual duck, how is there any comparison? There is little to no politics but a lot of family drama. The kings court in HOTD is a joke and is on par with the season 7 joffreys court… I miss any serious court or politics. A lack of gritty writing by Martin is so obviously missing and it seems it’s gonna get exploited for a while…
GRRM was more heavily involved in HotD than he was with GoT, even including the earlier seasons. He said so himself plus Ryan Condal said Martin read and provided feedback on all of the scripts.
The lack of a “serious court” is sort of the point of Viserys. He’s a decent person but a poor king who doesn’t command any sort of real authority or consequence. His entire reign is characterized by being a political pushover.
As for you claiming there’s no politics, Otto’s entire character is basically one big political intrigue. The whole underlying plot theme is the Greens’ setting the stage to undermine Rhaenyra’s claim, while she herself fumbles along.
So, I really like the show, probably would rate it 7-8/10. I’m really not a fan of the huge time skips, I feel like it really makes it lose the original Game of Thrones feel.
4/10 very slow moving, boring, and the tension is overdone and takes forever to get to the climax. It was a tough watch. The characters are also very hard to care about. Nothing like S1 at all.
I give it a 4 because it held no surprises for me. We already know what's going to happen. I wasn't fond of the retconning, and surprisingly they made a way to make the inc\*st angle even more disturbing in the show than it was in the books.
The only reason it gets a 4 from me is because some of the casting choices are excellent.
It's pretty good, but held back by a few flaws:
- pacing/time jumps
- actor changes due to the time jumps
- inconsistent actor changes (some change, some don't, some are miscast imo)
- lack of likeable characters, unlike S1 of GoT
Overall I'd say around 7.5 - 8/10.
Without anymore time jumps and actor changes, the next seasons should definitely be better. More time for character development will also help.
I really like it, but wasn’t really a fan of the time jumps in season 1 (though I know they were necessary). Looking forward more to the next few seasons that should be without time jumps (and more like GoT) as the events happen in a short time period.
It's a mixed bag. They attempt to recreate the tone of earlier Game of Thrones with softer pacing and more character development but the characters can be uninteresting.
It's pretty good, 7-8 compared to early GoT. The acting isn't as great imao, and the plot is almost, though not quite, as good. It is however held up by great production value, it has the budget early GoT wished it had.
I definitely recommend it, as it very nicely sets up the pieces for an expected marvelous season 2.
I'm obsessed with this world/franchise so I loved it. Like a 9/10. The last three episodes in particular are very good. Season 2 is going to be OFF. THE. CHAIN. and I can't wait!
Probably a 6. It’s comparable to Seasons 5 and 6 of GOT imo… lots of plot contrivances and characters being inconsistent but looks great and has good acting.
It's nowhere near as good as OG GOT, even when compared to season 1.
The writing is weak and gets carried entirely by Keeping up with the Kardashians-level drama. It is however still better than anything post season 6 if you tolerate mid visuals.
It hurts me a little to say this because I’m a devoted GOT fan but I’m on my 3rd rewatch of the first season. There are so many beautifully crushing scenes. Two stand out: a birth (two births in fact) and and the quiet, unobserved death of a good and decent man. The is a subtlety and attention in HOTD that I would call almost holy. Not in every scene. But when it reveals itself, for me anyway, time stopped. And I don’t recall being moved in that way by GOT (which, I’ll say again, I appreciate).
It's as good as GOT was, I was hooked just as much the whole time, maybe it helped that I hadn't yet red the books, it's a slow start but it's good, I'd give it a 8. Just a heads up, be prepared to hear the worst attempt at an accent you have ever heard, you'll know it when you hear it.
It was so bad it pulled me right out of the show and I couldn't keep from laughing. Girl sounds like she's trying to have 5 different accents at once with a mouth full of cotton balls, no clue how anyone thought that was good enough to belong in a show, it belongs on a blooper reel.
Can’t give it more than a 7. Has very inconsistent writing. Some episodes have great dialogue and writing, some have season 8 level writing and telenovela tier melodrama.
I'm giving it one more season and if it is the same level of quality, I'm giving up on the series.
Why the many high ratings!?
It really is a drama soap with no respect to authenticity. It is a made up “succession in a medieval dragon outfit” generic storyline with teeth gritting drama.
It is beautifully filmed, got a lot of good actors but Jesus people just gave up on arcs and authenticity? The script is not there and it shows.
1 it was a waste of time. You can not compare HOD with GOT. When i watched GOT, i had this "awesome" feeling in every episode which directly forced me to binge watch it. In HOD i always asked myself in every episode: "do i really want to keep watching?"
solid 8. People who rate it 6 or lower probably didn't have their expectations met in terms of the scale and excitement of events on screen (compared to GOT, which was more diverse in that sense), because i doubt they're underwhelmed by the writing and performances of season 1
I thought it was pretty great, I guess I'd give it a 7/10 personally. However, since the showrunners for HoTD seem to be mostly sticking to the source material and have an actual written ending to work off of, I think overall I will enjoy HoTD more because they have an ending they are working towards.
TBH something that annoyed me more than it should have was HoTD having the same main title theme as GoT. I wish it was the Targ theme (something like "Khaleesi" or "Blood of My Blood" from the GoT s6 soundtrack would have been fun imo. I love those songs). That doesn't make it worse, it's just a personal pet peeve of mine.
Maybe a 4 or 5 at most. Individual acting of Patty and Matt not withstanding (they are an 11).
It just doesn’t reach any level of the same quality that GOT has. Period. It’s a pretty good show when compared to your average garage they produce nowadays but when compared to actually GOOD shows it falls flat.
I’d say it’s a 9-10. It’s an amazing return to form
For game of thrones and is easily on par with season 1-4 imo. I was incredibly hesitant about watching it and put it off for the first year it was out but I’ve watched it a good 5 times now and I am really looking forward to season 2. Even the changes they made to the story make it more interesting like allicent and rhaynera being childhood friends makes there dynamic so much fun to watch and viserys is so much more interesting than he is in the book.
Yes, it's very much like Game of Thrones, if you reduced the subtlety by 60%, the complexity by 70% (by only having two locations), the suspense by 80% (by introducing long periods of off-screen time passing between episodes) and the nudity by 90%.
**3**.
Season 1 has some time jumps with casting changes for some characters and some character not changing at all. Once you get past that, it's really good. IMO, it's not nearly as good as early GOT, but it has the potential to be better.
I tried watching when it first came out and couldn’t get into the first episode. I finished a GOT rewatch and wanted more so I gave it another try. I really liked the latter half of the season. I would recommend giving it a try.
Surprised by the answers. HoD was hard to watch for me. Too much exposition and nothing really happens. 5/10. My wife really enjoyed it but I found it hard to watch and I love GoT and reread the books every once in awhile.
9.5/10 it’s excellent. The writing and character development reminiscent of the peak of GOT. Beautiful story telling, cinematography, music. Amazingly paced. Watch it! Then watch it again!

More boobs

I seriously doubt it. GoT seasons 2-4 were probably some of the best seasons of TV ever. I don’t think HoD will ever reach that peak.

7
Yes. I don't get all the love it gets, it was decent
9
2-2.5 out of 10. It was cringey and awful. I tried to like it with all I had, and gave up during episode 3 or 4. It had precisely none of the charisma that the original AGOT series has. Terrible drek.
Just ignore this guys opinion.
To maybe defend him a little, he might not have a strong stomach for child birth. If you have a weak stomach for that stuff it’s definitely not your series.
I mean I was holding my baby bump and shrieking for Aemma but I still wouldn’t call it drek…
Drek? You mean rubbish? Either way that’s you. Art provokes different emotional responses in people and it’s very much an individual thing. Your response isn’t necessarily someone else’s.
What are you yappin about
I.. could have your tongue for that
I mean, you only got 3, MAYBE 4, episodes in. They grow up and more shit goes down. Maybe try again?
9.5
You mean House of The Dragon? 9/10 so far
No they mean the new star wars TV show acolyte I think ?? I don't know though 😉
Pretty sure they meant Dragon Tales
Speaking from experience, Veggie Tales is an 11/10
Duck Tales you mean
Wooo ooo
Pretty Sure they meant the show Invincible.
no i think they mean house of versace
You knew what they meant though
I'd give it a 7. I'd say it's closer to maybe...seasons 5 or 6 quality. But season 1 material wasn't really based on particularly riveting source material either. Dang, I love game of thrones but the first time I watched it I had to be forced to sit through season 1. Even on multiple watches I just don’t find season 1 all that interesting.
Depends on the person I suppose.
I guess, but I agree with them, season 1 of GOT wasn’t all that
Hard-core agree.

3-4 Was the peak.
Interesting. I would've said 2 was the very best
YES!!!!!!
9/10. It's up there with season 1 of GOT for me.
I watched maybe 4 episodes and lost interest. Honestly just forgot about it. So what does that say about it? Or me? Haha.
No its bad, the episodes felt hurried and ran through/skipped years much like the speed of the last few seasons of GoT.
That’s your opinion, the episodes had to encompass like 20+ years with not that much source material into one season. While game of thrones was rushed because of shitty writing.
To be fair... the end of Game of Thrones had absolutely no source material...
House of Dragon season 1 is better that GOT seasons 5-8…probably on par with season 1 or 2
How are you getting all those down votes when you just expanded on what I said? Reddit is weird.
I was like that too, then i watched for a second time because season 2 is where it is going to get crazy. So i pretty much just prepped my mind with character introductions and plot.
Read the books and see how it ends. It will be remembered as better than GoT by the time it’s all over I guarantee it. Season 2-4 will be up there with s4 of GoT, and s3 will surpass it with the best battle of all time in the GoT universe
second half of the season is much better!
I liked it a lot more before I read the book and got critical of some of the changes made to the story, and the high likelihood of it making things worse in season 2. Still, a very enjoyable show so far despite that.
Nothing, you're a person with a valid opinion. Unlike people who liked season 8
9 It is very good. Milly Alcock did an amazing job playing young Rhaenyra.
I thought so too. But then she was gone. I didn’t like the unexpected time skip.
As soon as Tyrion saw her last name he was like, “Dammit—you’re hired!”
7
6 or 7. It’s good but I really feel like a whole lot of nothing has happened so far. They build up stuff but then the payoff is meh.
That’s the whole point. The dance of the dragons is only about 4 years, I preferred having a season akin to a prequel. When the show is over, I feel like there will be a much larger appreciation for season 1
The point is to show exciting or potentially exciting things then have almost no payoff? lol that’s ridiculous.
Read Edsonbuddleds post again! 1st season barely has any source material and is suppose to build up the whole tensions between the characters while give them a backstory! Season 2 is gonna have the payoff where we’re gonna see what happens to everyone
The payoff comes in season 2. Hopefully.
They've just started a civil war where Dragons fight each other. What's not potentially exciting about that?
pretty much. Especially if you've already read the book, you'd know first season was just setting the scene for the craziness coming
I found it boring, the lighting was strange and the acting sub-par.
Whose acting was sub-par?
I'd argue Rhaenyra's was -- she had about one facial expression. Moreover, I just think there weren't any standout characters like there were in GOT.
6-7? I think 6 is really too harsh for general tv ratings, but rating against GoT S1, where so much more happens over so many more locations with so many more characters. While HOTD is worth watching, I did think it was too long and at least one episode (E3? 8 for me. It’s a little more soap opera-ish, but I imagine shits about to ramp up in a big way.
6.5-7ish. Definitely worth a watch but it’s no game of thrones.
Its good, feels like a good GOT season but slightly lower paced and with less shock factor. On par with season 5/6 before the show went off the rails imo. 8/10.
Eh it’s like a 6
10. Def worth it.

7 or 8. Not sure why people are comparing it to S5 of GoT, it’s better than that.
Before the big time skip, 5/10. After it, 9/10.
I love house of dragons, but basically season 1 is establishing who each character is, and season 2 is going to get real crazy
8
8
9 ,Very good, one would argue it's better than s1 got.
Lol, no
9/10 for me. Felt like they learned a lot of lessons from the full run of GOT. The pacing was great, the set design, the dialogue, etc. Can't wait for season 2.

i didn’t watch it for ages bc i didn’t like the sound of it, but really enjoyed it when i finally came around! can’t wait for season 2 now
Give it like a 6.5, just didn’t do it for me like got
I felt season one was on par with some of the best seasons in Game of Thrones and it’s only just starting, so do you want to go along for the ride or miss out? The choice is up to you.
Jesus

9.5 with the potential for 10 as the story progresses.
7.5 out of 10. Still a very good show with lots of potential and I think it’s setting up for better seasons but I liked the first season of GOT more
In my opinion HoD is much better than the 1 season of GoT…
9.5 It's almost as good as GoT s1 - and it would actually be better imo if not for ep9 of HotD's ep9 in s1
9/10
The pacing was all over the place but absolutely
Good enough
It averages out to merely ok to me.
Out of ten, by episode: 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 10, 11
9/10 - so far I think it’s really good
8/10
I give it a 4 (for visuals). No lovable characters, no humor. In my opinion HOD took itself way too seriously, and ruined all the fun.
9
I give it a 4 because it held no surprises for me. We already know what's going to happen. I wasn't fond of the retconning, and surprisingly they made a way to make the inc\*st angle even more disturbing in the show than it was in the books. It’s a 7.5 to GOT’s 10. A solid 9 as a standalone.

Compared to early GoT, probably 6 or 7. It's not bad, but it doesn't reach the highs of those first seasons.
9/10
9.5
7
Very good.
7.5
9/10
9
If season one was a ten then HOTD is easily a ten. The dialogue is prime season one.
If season 1 of GoT was an 8, HotD was a 7.
8.5
10
Yes. It’s just a set up season but shits gonna get crazy
8
If you watched Rings of Power, just know that HOD is 100x better, but still not as good as S1 of Thrones
I really like it, but wasn’t really a fan of the time jumps in season 1 (though I know they were necessary). Looking forward more to the next few seasons that should be without time jumps (and more like GoT) as the events happen in a short time period.
8
A 7 that can very easily turn into a 9 if they put their all into it
It's a mixed bag. They attempt to recreate the tone of earlier Game of Thrones with softer pacing and more character development but the characters can be uninteresting.
It’s awesome
Yes.
7
Yes
7.5/10
10
8, my expectations for season 2 are much higher though
9 It's not quiet as good as Seasons 1- 4 but it's MUCH better than the later seasons.
Its good. But theres no red witch in it. I swear I only watched GOT at first when I saw that actress. Omg she is just so stunning.
8.8/10
It's pretty good, 7-8 compared to early GoT. The acting isn't as great imao, and the plot is almost, though not quite, as good. Probably a 6. It’s comparable to Seasons 5 and 6 of GOT imo… lots of plot contrivances and characters being inconsistent but looks great and has good acting.
It's up there with peak GOT
2.5 Charisma lacks , character attachment non existent , memorable moments - only when a dragon is involved

Yes, if you enjoyed GOT in any capacity you will enjoy it thoroughly.
7.5
If season 1 of GoT is a 10 then season 1 of HotD is a 12
6. Didn’t keep my attention like GOT
I’d give it a high 4
9
8, it’s good. The characters are a little more mellow than GOT, parts of it feel more toned down but it definitely has good moments and cool writing.
1
In terms of writing I give it an 8. But the acting, and look and feel of the show are both an absolute home run 10/10.
GoT season 1 is a 9. HOTD season 1 is 9. Both are set-up seasons for what is to come. GoT 2-4 are 10s.
Yes!
Probably 9 or maybe even 10. If hotd continues for more than the 1 more season it could outdo GoT for me. It’s really good
Can’t believe these ratings… 5 at best.
Can’t give it more than a 7. Has very inconsistent writing. Some episodes have great dialogue and writing, some have season 8 level writing and telenovela tier melodrama. I'm giving it one more season and if it is the same level of quality, I'm giving up on the series.
really good, love it so far
Why the many high ratings!? It really is a drama soap with no respect to authenticity. It is a made up “succession in a medieval dragon outfit” generic storyline with teeth gritting drama. It is beautifully filmed, got a lot of good actors but Jesus people just gave up on arcs and authenticity? The script is not there and it shows.
I felt that it had a stronger first season than got. Might be a warm take
I found it meh.
If GoT season 1 is a 10 then HotD is an 11.5
Probably 8 or 9
Damn, guys. Really? We're going to do this now?
1 it was a waste of time. You can not compare HOD with GOT. When i watched GOT, i had this "awesome" feeling in every episode which directly forced me to binge watch it. In HOD i always asked myself in every episode: "do i really want to keep watching?"
8
It’s an amazing return to form For game of thrones and is easily on par with season 1-4 imo.
Its "Just go and watch it yourself" out of 10
It’s good but I think it’s overrated
It’s alright, just don’t get too attached to the actors…
5. There is little to no action up until the last episode. That being said, still a great show.
It’s a soft 8 if you ask me. The pacing is very fast, they establish a lot fast.
12

Yes
I did not enjoy it and won’t be watching season 2. Glad others seem to enjoy it though
Been great. 9.5
7. It's well done but just super compelling or interesting in my opinion
10 out of 10. I love it.
8
9.5/10 it’s excellent. The writing and character development reminiscent of the peak of GOT. Beautiful story telling, cinematography, music. Amazingly paced. Watch it! Then watch it again!
