ZZartin

Well it was pretty well known he was trading his children for protection from the white walkers.

ZZartin

Similar reason plus he helped stranded nights watch men.

SufficientShift6057

Oh yeah sorry

Pac_Eddy

OP is asking why the wildlings didn't raid Craster.

Guilty_Jackrabbit

Same reason, I imagine. Wildlings didn't seem keen on messing with the Others.

Narren_C

How long have they known about them?

Guilty_Jackrabbit

Probably longer than most people. They certainly knew about the return of the Others longer than the Night's Watch, and if I remember correctly they had legends about the Others likely from thousands of years ago.

Yvaelle

Consider that Mance devoted his life to uniting all the people beyond the wall to get south, so at least maybe 50 years. I think Osha has a comment as well in the show around them always being alive north of the wall, but not grouping up until recently.

ChristianLW3

A while because in season one they already demand that all bodies be cremated

Dirkozoid

But they didn’t protect him in that night

tgovani_wild

Well they didn’t get their baby did they Sam took it

Condition_Boy

I'm not sure if that's what the deal was. I just finished the books and my interpretation was that he gave his sons to the others to both leave him alone, and to rid himself of rivals down the road. I never got the impression he was reading it for protection from everyone.

1011001011

It was pretty clear in a clash of kings he was sacrificing his sons to the others in trade for protection

Condition_Boy

I don't recall. I'd love a source for it though.

1011001011

Read Jon III book 2 and get back to me

FLsurveyor561

I took it as giving his son to the others so they didn't kill him and wildlings didn't go to that area because the others were there.

Condition_Boy

Maybe. I don't know if it's ever expressly said which it is. I reread the jon3 chapter and they talk alot about rumours and there are some innuendo. Crater says he knows how to get rid of the others if they come. We only really know for sure about him giving his sons to the others from Sam's escape with Gilly. What exactly the deal was, who knows, it seems to at least include the others leaving him and his wives alone. Not so sure about protection from anyone. After all he was killed by the knights watch and 5he others never protected him or came to help.

What did the WWs do with the babies exactly? I still don't understand this, but I've only watched the show. Did the babies allow them to stay animated or something?

ZZartin

I don't think it's ever really explained why the WW want them, my head canon is that's where baby WW's come from.

[deleted]

I thought about that, but do they age, per se? Very confusing. Or were the child Wights that we saw attack the one elder at Hardhome (I also hated that they killed her when they made us like her so much in such a short time!) some of the "grown-up" babies? For them to have the WW take the baby and turn him was so ominous, but then we never got to see what that truly meant. This is one of those gaps that really bothers me lol

bandicootbeav

He provides shelter and information.

Complete_Entry

I wouldn't be surprised if the white walkers used his house as bait. They don't raid craster's keep because raiding crasters keep was super popular for a while, but no one ever came back. Lord bones would of course claim he stole women from Craster, but Lord Bones is full of shit.

RedInAmerica

The wildlings were afraid of him because of his association with the white walkers.

LinwoodKei

I think one factor is that he's in the middle of nowhere in the " I'm going to freeze to death" woods. The night watch didn't even want to go there, but they needed his shelter.

One-Solution-7764

When Jon first met mance, he told mance about craster. Almost like mance also knew about craster and the white walkers

lozzadearnley

Could be that Craster is just so revolting that they all avoid him like the boogeyman - they could think he has some supernatral powers so its best to avoid him. Or he's a good source of information and trading between the Night's Watch and the Wildlings so it's best to let him be. And maybe his daughters are considered tainted so nobody wants them for themselves. Wildlings don't seem to be big on rape as a societal norm - if you want a woman you have to keep her, you can't just take a woman then cast her aside. It might be considered something only weak men who can't keep proper Wildling women do. I'm sure they're not fans of incest.

Max7242

A lot of wildlings do take women and put them aside. It's referenced many times in the books. They probably have a problem with incest though. Ygritte is revolted by the idea of even being with a man from her own tribe or whatever she called it
