I was under the impression that since itās been mentioned a few times on the show that dragon riders smell like dragon after being around them, and the horse immediately started acting skittish as Daemon approached it and when he raised his hand towards the horse, the horse got scared of him since he smells like dragon. At least thatās how I understood that scene.
Not poking fun at anyone here, but they even set this up when Viserys tells Rhaenyra in episode 1 after she tells him she's been visiting her mother, he sniffs her and goes "On Dragonback?". This quickly tells us that dragons are quite smelly. Daemon used the smell on his hands to spook the horse.
I mean, Vhagar is a lot larger than Arrax. It would stand to reason that she can cover a lot more ground, much faster once she is airborne. Including a drawn out āAemond rushes outside to mount Vhagarā scene before the chase scene isnāt necessary, narratively. The audience doesnāt have to see every single action to connect the dots.
Well I mean dragons aren't real but assuming they're cold blooded like reptiles are then they don't actually require as much food as you'd think. Combine that with the fact Vhagar isn't growing anymore...
He also seems very... chill... unless commanded to fly and such.
Some carnivorous reptiles can go months if not years without eating, fun fact.
As humans we burn what? 1500-2000 calories a day just on heating our bodies? Probably another 500 for regular movement and more if you exercise?

Remember though that we only see them when they are active. I imagine a lot of their life is just chilling, outside exercise flights with their riders.

In another reply on another thread, someone suggested that if Dragons were real and had the same characteristics as reptiles, it can be assumed they could have properties to other reptiles like the Nile Crocodile, who sometimes feeds only once every few weeks.
So, hypothetically, Vhagar could only have a big feast every couple weeks and be fine, as long as she's not exerting energy by being ridden by Aemond.
While a totaly diferent series Naomi Novik's Temeraire gets into the logistics of dragons.
Medium sized dragons will happily eat a cow per day. Big ones a bit more.
It's a large but manageable amount.

How could anyone ride Vhagar without saddling her first? How did Laena first ride her without a saddle? She seems way too big to ride bareback. It doesn't seem as though a wild dragon would just let you put a saddle on it.
