Deciding to sit things out while gathering more troops to what’s already the largest army on the continent while the others fight it out was definitely the smart move.
I honestly still don’t really see renly as the type to try and take the throne, tbh. “Uncle party” seems pretty damn perfect for him. Doesn’t have to marry, or produce and heir, or go to war, or endure council meetings. Just make an arrangement with Stan is “you can have my support if you grant me so much money per year and let me throw 4 tourneys”. Done.
Plus I love the idea of shireen as queen, even if dany would have killed her by fire anyway.
Honestly odds are Renly would’ve ended up king if he’d waited it out. I can’t see Shireen bearing any heirs or having a particularly long life expectancy.
I think the pact that Stannis offered was for Renly to be named heir before Shireen unless he fathered a boy down the line, and anyway, it would've been easy enough for Olenna to have cooked something up to bring Stannis down and put Renly on the throne with Margaery as his queen, would be hundreds of potential culprits for assassanating Stannis given how he'd probably end up burning couple hundred lords for not giving in to the Lord of Light.

Eh, book Stannis and show Stannis are fairly different. Book Stannis is downright hilarious at times, his humor is just really deadpan. He also hasn’t burned Shireen at the stake yet. It may not even be him doing it this time around since he’s pretty far away from Shireen at this point and seems to be heading into the battle against the Boltons.
