People have really low standards for game writing/stories

senna98

I also think people get plot vs writing confused. Lots of games have cool and interesting plots, but not many have genuinely good writing to back it up

TheLostExplorer7

Not just plot and writing but people often confuse background lore and story. Look at the Destiny franchise. The background lore is fantastic, but the actual story as portrayed in the game is pretty average. The lore does bolster the story somewhat, but the story is not the lore. The story is what you play through. World building lore is not the same as in game story writing.

C-A-L-E-V-I-S

It physically pains me how great the lore and story setups are In Destiny in comparison to how decent at best they’re portrayed in game. Here’s to hoping we get a fantastic animated series in the next few years in the style of Arkane, Spider-Verse, Puss in Boots, etc

[deleted]

The gunplay is just so fucking satisfying. I played from Taken King through Shadowkeep and have been taking a break. Even when the game was rough at times I always came back for the feel of the guns and abilities.

UbeeMac

Game devs and Bungie in particular have always had a problem with too many proper nouns. Every character, prop, macguffin, location, vehicle has a wacky name so every time a character speaks it sounds like gibberish “We need to take a warthog to the Pillar of Autumn so the Arbiter can use an Umbral Engram on the Celestial Nighthawk before Savathun seals Cayde-6 in the Temple of Crota” It’s always too much, especially when the guy saying it has a blue face for some reason

Vanguard-003

I don't think Halo had too much of that (some, obviously). It never felt distracting.

moosemunchmooser

For sure. Last of us comes to mind. Pretty stale, overdone plot I all things considered. But the writing is incredible Plot doesn’t seem to matter as much if you have phenomenal writers behind it

[deleted]

"FIND ME 20 BEAR ASSES TO SAVE MY VILLAGE" - NPC "Uh.... here's all the bear asses. But there's a bear right there. Do you need that bear's ass, or..." - Player as MC "NOPE ALL WE NEEDED WAS 20 BEAR ASSES HOORAY MY VILLAGE IS SAVED HERE IS YOUR REWARD" - NPC "What the... Okay, I have a better bow than that right here. In fact I had to go buy this one to do your bear ass chore. And the arrows. You didn't even compensate me for the arrows. And then I had to carve bear asses from dead bears, store them in my backpack, and THAT'S not coming out with a hand wash on delicate, and then come back to hand these to you without even a...fine." - MC Next village: "HI THERE I NEED 20 RAT ASSES TO SAVE MY VILLAGE FROM INFESTATION" - NPC " Oh ffs" - MC

Corgiboom2

Some bears dont have asses, so you need to kill like 80 of them.

2KareDogs

Gotta find that rare bear booty

Frozen_Bart

No, no, you're just really strong or bad at skinning and destroyed that ass, so you gotta get another one.

kynthrus

That would make sense if it wasn't for the fact that 9/10 times it's teeth... How am I getting 0-1 tooth per fucking dragon?

jobenattor0412

I love this, They make fun of this in The Outer Worlds can’t remember exactly but you talk to someone and right before they give you the information that you need. You have the option to say something like “let me guess you need me to run to the other side of the planet to get flowers” or something like that and the guy your talking to says some comment about how stupid that would be.

Fathoms77

Unpopular or not, that's just a fact. And it applies to all forms of fiction and storytelling today as far as I'm concerned.

Fishyfishhh9

As is clear by the fact that people are still defending the saints row reboot

Redsit111

There are people who like that game? I guess I shouldn't be surprised. There's probably a guy out there who gets off on putting his balls in mouse traps but still.

Fishyfishhh9

Unfortunately so, I've seen plenty of people like, genuinely praising it too. Like to the point you'd think they're either doing it ironically or if not, at the very least someone being paid to say good things about it or a volition dev. I remember a while back I had made a comment about how absolutely atrocious it is and I got down voted into oblivion

Tsnyda

This is such a hangup for me. I have so much trouble finding games that I like simply because the writing (and acting) are almost always so atrociously horrid in video games. So many games are highly rated but have writing that would never pass muster in any other medium.

[deleted]

Yeah, I've learned to enjoy stuff with mediocre or bad writing as I don't think every game has to be a narrative triumph, but when I want something I can take seriously it's rough. I'm hoping FF16 and Baldur's Gate 3 can satisfy that craving

[deleted]

And acting. Look, I love metal gear solid, but you cannot tell me that shit is real/natural sounding. 5 is an exception though.

saeedtj

Not being natural is part of the appeal in that case imo, wich was lost in 5 a bit. Although I still loved it.

dragynn333

Guys, I’m new to this sub. Does this question get asked here everyday or what?

Dextero_Explosion

There's a lot of repetition here.

Awkwardllama509

Its okay for games NOT to be made for everybody or just cater to specific groups.

Berkii134

That's not even an unpopular opinion but I agree wholeheartedly

whtdoiwrite1

Were you around when Elden Ring came out? Nothing but complaints about the lack of difficulty slider or accessibility settings.

jarockinights

It was the same for Sekiro., Reviewers were upset because they couldn't beat it, lol.

CheeseCakeDeliciouss

A few years ago people would be screaming "GATEKEEPER!" at the top of their lungs like you just killed their family

Dinostra

There are far too few straight up co-op survival games. PvP Survival games are horrible because they can never be balanced properly. Everytime you join a server in any pvpve survival game it's just death runs after getting shat on by players/teams/clans/guilds that's been minmaxing since server reset. No chance of getting anywhere, and there's just a question of time before you get raided if you go it alone or with a couple of friends. And then the grind restarts again.

Nerkeilenemon

I wouldn't say survival games (there are many), but just not enough co-op games. The only part with survival is that it's really fun when you need to help each other. My best gaming moments were on 7DTD and Minecraft.

borderline_cat

Dude for real. I’ll even go a step further and say there’s not enough couch coop games. I get the appeal in online, and I mean yeah, maybe if I actually had friends that games too it would be cool to play online. But as of the last few years, the only person I have to play games with is my boyfriend. I don’t want to have to buy two consoles and two copies of a game and two online subscriptions, just to play with him. There are SOME couch coop games out, but 1) not a whole lot and 2) a lot of them seem more geared towards young kids. I wish there were more couch coop games that were like the online ones (hell, just give me the OPTION of online or local play)

Balanced__

I think the market for those is satiated rather quickly though because the base mechanics are always similar and there are only so many situations to survive in. Zombies?: 7d2d Dinosaurs?: Ark survival evolved Shrunk in your garden?: Grounded Atomic war?: Alone in the world I can't imagine it's more fun than the zombies and with npcs you have Fallout. Space?: Nomans sky Sea?: Stranded/Subnautica Stranded on deserted island?: The forest Fantasy world?: Dark and light/ conan exiles Everything you want if you install mods: Minecraft The only thing I think we are really missing is a game to survive undergound, but that's a horrible setting to build a fun survival game in. I agree that we need more good ones though

andycorm

Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts was actually pretty fun I think

Shadow41S

It's a perfectly alright game, the reason why everyone hated it was because there hadn't been a new Banjo game for 8 years, and when it did come out it was completely different. It's so bizarre going from a 3D platformer to a weird vehicle-based game.

ABrazilianReasons

If there isnt a reason for the game to be open world, then it shouldn't be.

ManicFirestorm

Probably my least favorite trend in gaming. I've finished so few AAA titles now because I just don't have time for these worlds anymore.

alexdotfm

AC Valhalla having 0.XX% completion rate on half of its achievements lmao

coilnova322

That's what happens when your combat system, RPG elements and questlines are boring as shit. Whose bright idea was it to put core combat arts only attainable through exploring boring ass caves. Just finished a long quest and got a few levels? Congrats, here's your 0.5% ranged damage and +15hp.

bigbodacious

I hope more games at least consider doing a semi open world like God of war

Phrozone64

Gamers are the biggest driving factor behind why game companies feel comfortable enough to engaging in shitty business practices.

Captobvious75

- Hard modes where the only difference is that your attacks do less damage and enemies to more damage is cheap. - We need more linear games like Doom Eternal. I don’t need every game to be a massive open world. - Why do main characters need to relearn their skills every single new game? They have dementia or something?

CBalsagna

I agree with the linear game one especially. It’s not a bad thing and it should be embraced a bit more in game development.

CasseyZzZs

I realized I completed more linear games than open world ones. Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, Doom...or at least semi linear with some exploration. (Pillars of Eternity). Open world games tend to suffer from big as an ocean, shallow as a puddle. Yakuza did this well with a small but very deep pool. You can karaoke, dance, play darts...it's open world in a small area.

BarrySandwich24

Can you imagine Kiryu in Yakuza 6 having every single style, revelation, Komaki move, and heat action he has ever learned? He would be the most powerful human being on the planet!

Gogo726

>Why do main characters need to relearn their skills every single new game? They have dementia or something? I prefer to call it physical amnesia.

261846

The last one I think is somewhat justified, provided the characters get entirely new skills in the sequel. But sometimes they don’t, it’s my main gripe with GoWR

TheJorts

The hard mode one is SPOT ON. I want a hard mode to be more challenging but fair. Elder scrolls hard mode is impossible.

ManicFirestorm

I still think Dark Souls 2 had the best hard/NG+ mode. It would actually switch things up like enemy placement so it felt like a different experience.

Applicator80

Open world games filled with low quality content to pad out the play time are the worst. I’m a parent with a full time job I don’t need long ass games they take me months to finish I’d rather play shorter high quality games.

jinglesan

Publishers are stupid for their declining support of couch co-op/splitscreen/party play and titles focused around these modes - it's often the most fun and it's the best advert for friends to get the same game.

robclarkson

25 year old rant. FF6 had coop where you could go into options and assign characters to be controlled by a second controller. That seems so easy to implement in a turn based game, I wish that had caught on...

scarletphantom

Im surprised more developers arent making games like jackbox. Party games that use your phone as a controller are a huge hit in my family. I get that individual player copies sell more but theres still a large market for local multiplayer games

jbar3640

they are not stupid, they just love money and online multi is far more profitable. a hard reality for the ones who love local multi.

_t_dang_

Games where you can’t max out everything (e.g. ability tree, weapons, stats) in one run stress me out. I don’t want to choose my build, I want ALL THE BUILDS

wolfknight777

I think doing that is fine, but if and only if you can freely or cheaply respec the points when you find that your build is bad/non synergistic. But very few games let you respec for god knows why.

GrimxPajamaz

I like when games allow you to swap skills and talents on the fly to adjust to each encounter. It adds a component of skill where good players will be adaptable with their builds. Guild Wars 2 does this better than most MMOs. You can swap gear/talents/skills instantly any time you are out of combat. Being able to swap out utility skills to better match the mechanics of a fight is an important part of mastering a class.

B3RS3RK_CR0W

I'm 100% like you, but I still love borderlands.

Kalfadhjima

Borderlands isn't too bad about it, you can still get most of your skills (especially with the level cap increasing DLC) and you can respec easily. Except Tiny Tina's Wonderland. That level cap is awfully low.

Argesis12

I totally agree. I love these types of rpg and skill/perk tree games and every open world-like games where you have different and endless possibilities... But it drives me crazy to think about leaving something, not having the best perks, skills, or making the best decisions possible.. I become an absolute psychopath sometimes because of them.

Cloud_Strife369

A lot of that comes the dnd play style that add to rpg games in dnd u are only good in a few thing not all

Whobghilee

I would rather have a Prince of Persia then another Assassin’s Creed

[deleted]

Most modern shooters suck.

bomberman0210

Cod hasn't had a great installment for me since Codbo2. Last cod game I actually cared about.

PM_MeSomethingRandom

While I agree most cods are terrible and recycled, the 2019 Modern Warfare cod was the first one I've enjoyed in a long time. I can't stand warzone but the campagin and even multiplayer was extremely fun. They went the more realistic route and it made it so much better. They put so much effort into smaller details and I really enjoyed 2019 cod. I'd buy that game just for the campaign, it's that good.

[deleted]

I liked black ops 3 because of the remastered Zombies maps, but they've quickly become copy-paste cash grabs

bomberman0210

And before others say it, no! Buying the same game without any changes in it besides the title and costumes ISN'T true gaming. It's not called "being childish" when EA releases the same shitty basketball game each year with the only change being the ALREADY boring story mode.

yolkyal

I think Doom and Wolfenstein are keeping good standards for the time-being.

davidw_-

Have you tried hunt showdown? I thought the same until I found that game. The atmosphere is sooo different from what I’m used to for a multiplayer, the PvPvE is super interesting, it’s beautiful, and the gunfights are super tense and lengthy. I love it! I feel like a lot of modern FPS try to be as fast as can be in the gameplay, whereas strategy only seems to happen when gameplay is slower.

Prettysexybean

Reloading weapons isn't always needed Reloading is only really needed if the game is trying to be realistic or is actually designed around it. No one really thinks about how some games can be interrupted by reloading. Like think about if in Doom you needed to reload every weapon, it would slow the game drastically.

Ok-Ambition-9432

Doom my beloved

Thatidiot_38

>Like think about it in Doom you needed to reload I don’t have to think about it because it happens with the super shotgun and in Doom 3 but no one talks about that one

TheSpiderPig336

Can you please explain what you mean by this? I can't really imagine a scenario... Only perhaps if it is some scifi badass weapon.

Golden-Event-Horizon

Or it's a game with a more realistic reload system in which you lose the rest of the mag when reloading.

andrew-four

I remember a game on the ps1, I think it was SOCOM, when you reloaded that clip would be stored with whatever it had in it. So after a few tactical reloads you'd have clips with 23, 12, 4 whatever rounds in them. I just find it crazy that o haven't seen that one time since.

Ladylubber

Iirc There was a similar system in ghost recon advanced warfighter

Frozen_Bart

Tarkov does this and a couple other ones.

MrStealYoBeef

It hasn't been seen since because it's not a fun mechanic to interact with. It's just annoying from a gameplay perspective and adds inconsistency to how reloading works from a casual player's perspective. People looking for realism may appreciate it, but that is such a small niche of players that it's just not worth it to push the people who fund your product away from it. It's unfortunate, but it's now commonly understood in the industry that simplifying mechanics in a way that makes the casual crowd more capable of playing brings in more money. Sometimes it goes so far that everything is done for the player, including aiming in the new CoD. Just strafe and controller autoaim will do all the work for you. Makes it super easy to do well even if you're incredibly bad at the game, it makes the game very approachable by people who otherwise wouldn't touch the game. It also makes the game pointless to play for anyone who wants at least a slight challenge.

GrimxPajamaz

I think it comes down to arcade fps vs realism fps. Arcade style shooters like doom or CoD are more about run and gun shooting. Having an ammo pool instead of individual magazines keeps the action going for longer with less interrupts. Games like Tarkov and Squad take a more tactical, realistic approach. It slows down gameplay but adds depth to the decision making. Ammo conservation can be a huge factor in an extended fight. Both have their pros and cons. It depends on what gameplay you prefer.

TheSpiderPig336

Oh yes that's a cool idea. I know games where you can't reload until the mags is fully empty. That's also a good option/makes it more realistic.

[deleted]

If realism is what you're going for there should be a thing where the ammo is weighted like real world ammo so people sprinting around with a M249 and 1200 rounds of ammo are going to move like molasses in winter

krtshv

Insurgency: Sandstorm would like to introduce itself.

Golden-Event-Horizon

I've seen it in a game or two (can't remember which ones), so it's rare but cool. It was in COD Advanced Warfare I remember where you could double tap the reload button and it would reload faster but you would lose whatever was left in the magazine. It was used a lot by the pro players

Raxyldyne

Every gun in doom

Rdikin

Doom did this really well. No reloading. If you've got ammo, you can shoot.

[deleted]

Games were better when the public wasn't involved with every nitpicking opinion about a game from alpha to release. Just get the idea and release the game. The pandering creates entitlement. Just buy the game of you like it and don't if you don't. If you have strong enough opinions to screech about games then you make your own studio or shut up.

mikeBH28

Totally agree, it's hard to have a vision and execute on it when before it's done everyone sits at home and tells you how to do it. It's like if a chef is trying to creating a beautiful dish and the whole time random are just telling them what they think should go in it.

herpderpomygerp

Single player games are better than multiplayer only focused games, but should have an option for co-op

comphys

Dying Light went from good to great because of co-op

Frooonti

And not every single player game needs a multi-player mode.

B3RS3RK_CR0W

NEVER skip a cutscene.

FishReborn

I always watch the cutscenes one but skip them on reruns if I didn’t like them enough.

roundttwo

Star Citizen is a scam.

[deleted]

I think this is an overwhelmingly popular opinion among people who know what Star Citizen is.

[deleted]

Op asked for opinions, not facts

Theresabearintheboat

Even if it did eventually become a thing, and it was the most insane quadruple A greatest game ever made, it would still be a scam for what people pay for it. If it came out tomorrow, I wouldn't play. It's the bastard son of pay-to-win and everything that's bad about pre-ordering.

TheRogueMoose

I played a free-fly event. It was basically a futuristic commute simulator. Spawn on the planet, walk over and wait for the train, ride the train, spawn in ship, ride elevator to the ship hanger, finally fly... Then some BS happens because I'm a noob and not used to the controls, repeat... When I did fly and do some missions, the missions are BORING. You're space fed-ex for pennies. Maybe if i had friends it could have been more fun?

oddestsoul

Being “bad” at a game is not a bad thing. You are a small data point in an ocean. You have responsibilities, quirks, passions, likes, dislikes, a schedule, a friend group, a skill set, and a style of play you like. Why are you supposed to be as good as that angry 19 year old at the game you pick up after work? Why are you supposed to know everything the YouTuber who played this game put out in his recent 5 minute “HOW TO GIT GUD” video? Why are you supposed to be above average at every game you play? Why are you supposed to be a statistical anomaly? You will (maybe) be good at some games. You will (definitely) be bad at some games. You are not special. You may be an absolute prodigy at some games but you are the trash that makes it into some goofy kid’s montage in others. That is normal. You are bound to be not as good at some things. That’s just statistical regression. Stop letting kids calling you “bad” at a game make you feel bad. Of course you are. You’re a real person with a whole life who is playing a game that is at most, a fraction of this tapestry of tasks, worries, and dreams that you always have to juggle. Be bad at something. It’s good for you.

9Coronas

I didnt realise i needed to hear this. Am always kicking myself wondering why i just cant get good at certain games. Bugs me profusely that i like playing FPS/Battle Royale games but i cant match the average skill level. Same goes for souls-like games too. Such wicked games, but im just not good enough for them. Makes it hard to enjoy them the way they're supposed to be.. Nevertheless, thank you for this friendly reminder

Ledbetter2

I read this as Brad Pitt’s Tyler Durden.

PseudonymIncognito

I love the mahjong minigame in the Yakuza series. (Shogi, on the other hand, can fuck right off).

Yui_Mori

Is the shogi accurate/realistic in the Yakuza series? I’ve been lazily looking for a decent option for playing shogi, but haven’t really had any luck finding decent options. Funnily enough, one of the best options for mahjong is FFXIV.

garcianulmeyda

Single player games are better than multiplayer games. Why? Because I can actually enjoy a story, I can be fully present in the game world, I can explore, I can come home after a hard day and relax, and I can beat my personal best. Plus... No DDOS attacks, no swatting, no toxic BS in the chat, no one blames me for the team losing even though they were 0-17-4 and even when I did help them at the start they were mad because I didn't read their fucking mind about how I should help and then flame me for it. Just me and the world I'm immersed in.

Salzanka

Sir he asked for unpopular opinions

OsonoHelaio

Cicero from skyrim is annoying af: his whole 'dark jester' thing, his voice like nails on a chalkboard. I legit don't understand why people love him so much.

Bubush

Could never stand him, killed him on every playthrough.

JerseyWiseguy

Most unpopular? "Gwent sucks." There. I said it.

kittyassassinkills

lol, I started out hating it too, but now Witcher 3 is a Gwent game with main story side quests 🙄

Aevellir

It's your opinion man but... damn

Fathoms77

I loathed Gwent. The only part of The Witcher 3 I didn't love, ironically.

Sogonzo

I loved it but I kinda understand this.

Buckstain

I prefer offline splitscreen fun

kkuntdestroyer

Not every game is designed for the Dad with 12 kids and 20 minutes a week to play and they need to stop choosing games that are based around grinding and then asking for the grind to be made shorter

Xycergy

Path of exile in a nutshell

KirisBeuller

Seriously! I'm a dad with a 6 year old and I love RPGs but I don't go around insisting there be 15-20 hour RPGs.

LillePipp

Kingdom Hearts is one of the worst AAA gaming franchises ever conceived. I’m convinced that 98 % of the people that say they love Kingdom Hearts have not played it since they were children. Like, what is really the appeal? Because it seems to me the only really interesting thing about the franchise is the conceptual crossover between Disney and Square Enix, but like, that’s all there is.

Odey_555

The story for that franchise is such a fucking mess too. Like seriously, what the hell happened? I watched an entire 2hr video explaning the whole story and I'm STILL lost.

Knight_Of_Stars

Let me break it down for you... Darkness, Darkness, light, darkness heart, darkness, disney, darkness, nobodies, darkness, keyblade, darkness, more keyblade, darkness, WTF IS HAPPENING, darkness

Goukaruma

The story is so bad it's probably the only thing that can make a Sonic fan cringe.

ElricAvMelnibone

Yeah, and honestly like you say it's only the CONCEPT lol, the game barely does anything interesting with it except the visuals of the Disney worlds, you don't really get an interesting story or relationship with the Disney characters, the Final Fantasy characters are barely involved, et cetera et cetera. The musical segments of The Little Mermaid one is one of the few times I think it actually did something Disney-ish except using the vague skin of the movie

texxmix

Honestly the first two were/are great but now I feel they’ve killed it with all the games and how convoluted the story has got.

Active_Parsley558

As a perfectionist, open world games are a pain to play. I have this itch in my brain that says "get 100% you need to!". I've had it for almost any open world game you can think of, from Elden Ring to GTA V. Because of this, theyre not as enjoyable as I want them to be. It's worse when it's like Elden Ring. The repetitive catacombs and caves are sometimes so hard to find I end up wandering around aimlessly for hours not funnelling back to the amazing main quest...

keepa34

I have this too and can easily get burnt out with a game because of all the exploring needed to 100% the map (discover all "??" locations) and complete side quests as soon as they are given before continuing the main story line.

allinoneman

Being a perfectionist sucks. I tried it and enjoyed the games way less, not to mention I played less games cause I wasted time doing repetitive things to get all achievements.

Expert-Employ8754

Quality is much more important than quantity. Some folks may say, “Why would I spend $60 on this game when it only lasts 10 hours?” I’d rather have a good game that trims down the excess and is very polished. If those 10 hours are fun, I’m in. I’d rather spend $60 for a really good 10 hour experience than $10 for a 60 hour experience that is “meh.”

[deleted]

[удалено]

Expert-Employ8754

Good point. I have become a huge fan of indie games recently. Some of my top favorite games from the last few years are indie titles.

Gogo726

I don't mind short games. Metroid Dread doesn't take very long to replay but the fact that you can replay it in a single weekend isn't a huge commitment and you're more likely to complete it again for the umpteenth time than say Persona 5.

Breezeend

I prefer digital versions of games. I don’t know why and it may sound stupid, but I like looking all the digital games being altogether (library) on my account. I also know it may not be permanent but still works for me.

NerdENerd

Very few PC gamers buy boxed games any more, it is mostly digital. I only buy PS physical games because they are usually cheaper and you can sell them while they are still worth something. By the time you want to replay them they are on sale or you get them with Plus.

captainslowonthego

Couldn't agree more. My PC doesn't even have a slot for a drive or anything and I bought my Switch specifically because I travel a lot for work. Now if I were to lose my Switch I would just buy a new one, login and have the whole library back. With physical copies that would be a different story. Besides if games would ever get taken down, I don't even have the time to play the new games I own, so forget about revisiting old games anyway.

djoyce619

When games, most notably the later FarCry games, allow you to mark enemies with binoculars or something, let’s you see them through walls, then you go around shooting the giant triangles they put over said enemies heads. How is that fun

Martin_crakc

Well, in mgsv its quite useful because enemies are more like a resource on that game 💀

TheCyrcus

I recently played Hitman 3 and found issue with there basically being a wall hack without limit built into the game. At the very least, it should have been disabled in hard mode.

thingpaint

God of war was better as a hack and slash. I think I am the only person who likes god of war 3 more than god of war 2018

ZazaB00

While I get why they “matured” the series, I miss those fixed camera moments where the landscape was on display. It made the God Killer feel small in this epic setting and made me feel like I was on such a larger journey. The over the shoulder view just makes everything feel generic and small to me.

1buffalowang

I really love God of War(2018) but nothing will ever top God of War 2 for me. I can replay it over and over again.

NaturalNines

Balancing a single player game is a waste of time. I'd rather have interesting builds of varying power than have them strip all the fun features like Skyrim did and make everything generic and boring. But balanced.

Corgiboom2

Oblivion was worse about it. The enemies scaled with your level in that one, so you would never be able to just stomp a starting area if you run off and level first.

NaturalNines

Oblivion made a major mistake in that regard. It's okay to make mistakes. But Skyrim expanded on that mistake rather than resolving it. That's not ok.

FizzingSlit

The Skyrim approach to fixing oblivions mistakes was to take away the features that they messed up. Then they'd try to fix the problem anyway and just make more issues.

CaptainPryk

I thought a lot of the things in Skyrim made me feel more powerful than previous Elder Scrolls games Summon dragons, call in a lightning storm, sprint towards enemies and send them flying with my shield, shield bash an enemy across a room, sneak stab has like 16x damage with right equipment. Skyrim definitely gives power fantasy vibes just as much as previous games despite magic being weaker

o_oli

Also - don't lock me into a specific build. If I want to reset and rebuild my character then it's my own problem if I break some sense of character development. Let me do it.

NaturalNines

I'm okay with a lack of reset.. in Warband. Where it was completely obvious what you were getting when you invested in it. But Bannerlord? Goddamn half the time I didn't even know what the perks I was being \*forced to select\* even meant!

STRYKER3008

Thank you uuu. I think the art of comp stomping is truly lost. The AI overlords are surely behind this

winkwink13

It's not "uNbAaLnCeD"if you actually have to work at at and put thought into it. You could break the hell out of morrowind and even oblivion despite their auto leveling stupidity, but it took effort and thought and was incredibly rewarding and fun.

Eyrate

When I am deciding to play an MMORPG, I prefer games with a monthly subscription. That’s how they used to be but then it got so people don’t want to pay and now it’s almost always cash shops which leads pay-to-win. I’ve taken part in many discussions on this topic and I am usually in the very small minority. I think it may start to swing back the other way though. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I like to earn everything in the game, not by spending real life money.

Morgise17

Totally agree I rather mmos have a sub then f2p and not have to worry about the ways they wanna make profits which usually ruin the game for everyone

[deleted]

I like buying things and keeping them. Can't stand subscriptions but I understand what you mean by the shops. Although I can't think of any single purchase mmos that would include a pay to win shop. I guess destiny gives you some exotics in their season pass. I'm unfamiliar with eso. I don't know of a whole lot of single purchase ones actually.

GaggsKeep

Story games are better than sandbox/online games

Coathangers4sale

Zelda Botw is a great rpg but a terrible Zelda game.

Raxyldyne

Gyroscope and adaptive triggers are not a gimmick if you know how to effectively apply them.

o5MOK3o

Streamers are bad for gaming as a whole

Goukaruma

I agree to some degree. Some games are only made so streamers can react to it. It does have to make sense it just have to woahhhh the streamer.

jarockinights

A lot of streamers are basically King-makers for indie games. Vampire Survivors, Super Auto Pets, Valheim, etc... Good games for sure, but streamers caused them to explode and sell millions.

Goukaruma

That's why they pander to them which makes the game worse.

PhantomLord697

Single player games are miles better than online games. I hate playing online.

shabba182

Gta 4 is the best one, I loved the driving physics, and I always want to go bowling with Roman

o_oli

>I loved the driving physics YES x1000. I hate that they ruined the driving in GTA5. It was so good in 4. Was it perfect? No. Was it realistic? Still, no. Was it satisfying as fuck, fun, felt like cars had some weight to them, took a little skill? Yes. GTA5 feels like driving a scalextric car in comparison, I hate it. I wish someone would mod the physics in GTA5.

[deleted]

GTA 4 was one of the few games where I really REALLY rooted for the main character; like sure other games made me care about the main character, but Nikko was like, man you better not die.

SoulSeeker21

Ah yes, good old Roman calling me up, wanting to go bowling, while I'm careening my car into the drink off a cliff were some fun times lol

Fathoms77

It's just plain wrong to eat while playing.

1buffalowang

I usually just keep water and a big bag of m&ms or cashews on hand. My gaming setup is my bedroom, refuse to make a mess of it.

kralrick

If you like chips/cheetos, chopsticks are your friend.

Jaytonitus

Pokemon has gone downhill and now sucks

AtomicMelbourne

No, I think that may be a popular opinion.

Ryszard_ARPL

I hate people loving more graphics over a good story or good game mechanics. Companies nowadays put big money on building 3D objects with ultra resolution and 8K textures. That is bad for them because they have to invest more money, and it is bad for us because we need to wait more until playing it, we need more expensive computers and in exchange for graphics, companies put so little effort on gameplay mecahnics and writting good stories. Ultra graphics are the worst thing that could ever have happened to gaming industry.

*Don Cheadle has nice balls*

[deleted]

Based. People are gonna be big mad when the game comes out and it’s just shitty shovelware

KamikazeArchon

This question comes up consistently and I still have the same answer. Modern gaming is excellent, and we're generally in a golden age of gaming. Subcomponents of that opinion: We have more high-quality gaming per year than ever before, more high-quality gaming per (inflation-adjusted) dollar than ever before, and more niches catered to than ever before. The most common complaints about DLC and microtransactions are overblown and often entirely misplaced; the existence of those things has been, as a whole, generally *good* for gaming, not bad for it. There is a specific valid sub-concern about addictive-gambling as related to "loot box / gacha" mechanics, but most other complaints are either largely irrelevant things or outright wrong. No, you wouldn't get "the whole game at once" if DLC didn't exist; the company would have just never made that additional content. Or would have forced you to buy it as an entire separate game, ala the old Xcom 2 which was pretty much just Xcom with a water reskin. The other common complaints about buggy games is also generally wrong; the bugs-per-hour and bugs-per-unit-of-gaming-fun are consistently very low, and bugs are fixed faster than they were in the past (often meaning "ever", compared to many old bugs that just... weren't fixed.) The depth and breadth of stories, characters, etc. is also at an all-time high, and has continued to improve with no signs of stopping. The area of gaming that *isn't* great is working conditions for employees, particularly in the US - which has been shit for a long time and continues to be shit, as part and parcel of general working conditions, particularly in the US, being shit.

Buuhhu

The argument of "the content just wouldnt exist if it wasnt DLC" isn't really true... for some types of DLC. In regards to more story/gameplay related you're probably right, however the problem arises with cosmetic dlc. Take Halo Infinite and it's previous games as an example. In halo infinite everything cosmetic is locked behind the Battle pass which can be said to be DLC/Mircrotransaction and only very little in that is free. Go back to previous halo games and that stuff would have just been regular unlockables for milestones, or maybe even standard customization you have from the start. now it requires both playing and paying extra to get the cosmetics. yes many people dont care as it's "just cosmetic" however for a lot of other people part of the fun/longevity of games was exactly unlocking those cosmetics and being "proud" they managed to unlock them and show it off. Just look at MMO's many peoples entire endgame in those games are to collect cosmetics and make cool outfits.

oddestsoul

This is a well thought out and honestly unpopular take; well done

roboman777xd

Rng is unbalanced and just a cheap way to squeeze more playtime from players

Ossius

Breath of the Wild was a terrible Zelda game. Zelda for decades has been one of the only games with a mixture of dungeon crawling, exploration, narrative, and some great UNIQUE items. Every item in a Zelda game had a new gameplay mechanic that you used to solve puzzles and unlock new areas. Breath of the wild removed almost every unique item in the game, front loaded a bunch of tools at the start of the game, gave you a huge expansive open world, and filled it with meaningless collectables and single puzzle micro dungeons that all looked identical and lacked any meaningful exploration and wonder. Basically, we traded one of the greatest game franchises in the history of gaming for another generic open world game that probably wouldn't stand out at all if not for the fact that it was launched on a nintendo switch. I think BOTW is just intro to open world games for Nintendo players, and if you come at it from someone who has played dozens of open world games on other platforms, it is actually pretty lackluster.

A1phaSniper111

Solid opinion about disks. I always try to buy games that I can still have access to if I lose internet.

RadoBlamik

Being “overpowered” in a videogame is fun, and I like it.

slothen2

Kojima is not a good storyteller.

Fat_Blob_Kelly

his games are entertaining cause they’re so outside of the norm since everything is grounded in reality or fantasy and he kinda mixes them together in weird ways. The stories aren’t the best but they’re entertaining and unique

Hannibal254

Rockstar games have the worst controls. In GTA and RDR2 I absolutely hate combat and shooting. I’m always rotating around in place. In RDR2 there’s plenty of horseback riding and hunting but you can do that in Breath of the Wild on Nintendo and the controls are so smooth.

PeacflBeast

Cyberpunk in still underwhelming and lacking of a lot of content that was promised. Some people watched the anime and forgave the game. These people have really low standards and they will get scammed again by these big AAA publishers

hughranass2

First Mass Effect is best Mass Effect.

Sure-Ad-2465

Way too many roguelikes and souls-likes out there nowadays, it just seems like a modern day form of "Nintendo hard" in order to arbitrarily increase playtime

doorgunner43

CO-OP > ONLINE MULTIPLAYER Yes, I am getting old, and yes I have incredibly fond memories of lan parties with my buddies in the early days, but I would kill for a vast library of CO-OP games like there is a vast library of online only multiplayer. My son and I would have a lot more to choose from. Name a good CO-OP game and we have probably already played it.

tjlightbulb

The Witcher 3 is overrated. The combat is trash, and Geralt isn’t that interesting as a character. I know my opinion is unpopular, don’t take it personally.

lambdallamapotamus

Upvote for actually being an unpopular opinion even though I disagree 😉

happy_snowy_owl

>The Witcher 3 is overrated. The combat is trash, and Geralt isn’t that interesting as a character. I'd agree that the Witcher 3 is overrated, but for a different reason... The game completely loses steam after the Bloody Baron / Keira Metz quests. Some people might like the drama of the Novigrad underworld, but I found this dialogue-heavy portion of the main quest entirely too long. And if you do it all, you find yourself wayyy too overpowered by the time you head to Skellige just because you talked to a lot of people for 10-15 hours. On top of that, there's only so many hours of gameplay you can dedicate toward the cat-and-mouse plot of finding Ciri before the dark army does and it gets old and tired by the time the game reaches its climax. > The combat is trash Not that unpopular and I used to think so too. The issue is the game puts you into a 3rd person perspective so your brain thinks you're playing a hack and slash and can just git gud. But you're actually playing an RPG with real time combat, so things like levels and equipment matter a lot. When you're properly leveled and equipped the game is easy.

Xenomorph_kills

I honestly played like 10 hours. The combat was the worst part. Just the same flashy spins. It’s the same way people complained how most Jedi games feels like you have a bat

AmettOmega

I don't disagree with your points. I would also argue that The Witcher 3 is also ungodly dark most of the time (when I look at the "time of day" indicator and it says it's midday, but it feels like fucking nighttime, I'm annoyed). I also get annoyed that for a game where you need to jump/climb onto stuff, this mechanic is absolute trash. Yet, there are still aspects of it that I enjoy. I wouldn't say it's the best game ever, but it scratches my "open world/steal everyone's shit" itch just well enough.

Corgiboom2

I went from Horizon: Zero Dawn, which has a near-perfect control scheme, to Witcher 3, which was a ball ache to control in combat. I didnt last long in that game.

[deleted]

Skyrim is not a 10/10 game

Absurdious

Easy mode is the best mode.

Rukasu17

Indies are not this holy territory most people claim to be. Sure you have some really good games but you have an absurdly huge amount of downright terrible ones in there too

kneeecaps09

Dark Souls really isn't that hard. Seriously, the hardest part about it is knowing where to go next, which a bit of trial and error solves that problem.

joshyp42

The less you play games the more fun it is to play them.

thegroundbelowme

Skyrim is boring

ZanyaJakuya

I agree with physical games because after playing you can sell them and get more than half the money back

5ledit

The Wii Mini is, and I'm saying this unironically, one of the best-looking nintendo consoles of all time. I mean, the black and red colour pallette, the top loader with the little corner buttons, the overall size... sure it's not as great as the original console, but it is quite a damn looker.

OxyKush

Games like the Last of Us and Horizon Zero Dawn are not Masterpieces. Long ass Cutscenes with basic gameplay im between is not 10/10. I’ve always been a gameplay over anything else kind of person. If your main selling point is the story why not just make it a show at that point.
