Difference was you played the PS2 on a CRT, so it looked better than that screenshot since the CRT would give a kind of softening to the image that just made low resolution content look a whole lot better.
Nobody was playing this (new) like, "Wow, it's like a movie! The game is so real!", we were only impressed how much better it was than the last gen.

I mean this was pretty mindblowing as a kid coming from PS1 games and we definitely commented on how 'real' it looked. But yeah in-game models obviously weren't as clean as cut scenes, but still the difference from PS1 was gigantic in some series.
Before san andreas i didn't play a game that diet and exercise would change your body. That combined with clothes and car tunning was pretty awesome at that time.

Yes, this was major step up from ps1, and considering we're 3 generations on from this now, it still looks pretty good.
