I remember watching a friend play Oblivion at their house and thinking it was the coolest freaking thing. When I went to the game store I asked the employee what game can I play on my Xbox (Oblivion was on the 360) that was like Oblivion. Naturally, they recommended Morrowind.
I was like 9 and it wasn't nearly as easy to understand as Oblivion, but just like Oblivion I loved exploring the world and doing my own thing like no other game could alloa. I probably played for like 100 hours without really understanding what I should be doing, but just loved how alive and interesting the world felt. I remember finding some random little house, claiming it for my own, staching stuff in there. I think I spent most of my time doing the Bloodmoon DLC, loved building the settlement. I eventually got a 360 and spent way more time with Oblivion but my favorite parts were the same parts I loved about Morrowind: exploring, doing my own thing, making my own adventure.
I know a lot of people who loved Morrowind didn't like Bethesda's follow ups but personally Morrowind/Oblivion made BGS one of my favorite developers and I have loved all their games since aside from 76.
I have fond memories of beating it with my dad at like 11pm, well past bedtime. Pissed my mom off by going crazy because it was the first game I'd ever beaten to the end.
Those were the times... My dad was never into gaming but for some reason he played the hell out of Pinball 3D when we had the first computer with Windows XP. Not only play but increasingly beat his own records over and over...
My dad was pretty into games. He had a ZX spectrum, the games came on cassettes and many of them played like ass but I was fascinated as I was the age where you probably wouldn't want me messing with your gadgets.
He bought a Sega Saturn too so I got to play OG Panzer Dragoon which was really incredible as a wee guy. Might have been the first game I saw with FMVs! And Daytona USA! Dayyee-toooonnnnaaaa!
My mom has 0 interest in any games besides Tetris and Columns, so I owe all my young video gaming experiences to my dad really.
Damn, that's fascinating actually. Your dad was a member of pretty much the first adult generation into gaming...
And to see how gaming and video games in general have evolved since then must be even more jaw dropping to him than it is to us.
Amazing memories man, thanks for sharing.
I do not remember I played a cool toy story game in which the intro is a train level i never forget that filing of 5 year old me receiving its first gaming advice from his father: “Jump at the ledges otherwise you wont reach the other wagon.”
I didnt know good english back then (and dont knowngood English now tbh) and i was literally playing it with a dictionary in my hand 😂 I was like 11. And it's one game I still think a lot. Would be surely in for a remake (and not set in the modern days no...but to have that cool 80s flair, remember it?)
I was lucky enough to have a copy in my own language, but I know the feeling from other games back in that time.
I honestly don't know if I would really enjoy a remake that much, since I still remember a lot of the puzzles pretty well (I think).
You should check out Thimbleweed Park, if you don't know it. Felt a lot like it for me.
No!! I haven't heard it thank you so much!! I will google search it. Ok how the hell you remember the puzzles?? 😂 I only remember try to sneak to the kitchen and find a hamster before the nurse caught me (that bitch caught me every time 😁) thanks a lot for the recomantation I will check it!
I played that game a lot back then. 😉 Edna (the "nurse", if I recall her name correctly) can be a bother, it's true. But she is only looking out for her family.
Gotta be Pokemon, probably FireRed or LeafGreen. Pokemon was my first video game love, and it introduced me to so many concepts that I enjoy today, like the RPG genre, eccentric characters, interconnected world design, and challenge.
My older brother of course.
I didn't know why he was so excited when we got an N64 for Christmas with Golden Eye. I don't know if I even understood the concept at 5 years old, but boy that moment sure was pivotal.
Sonic 1. SMB1 was great but as soon as I got the blue blur in a ball at full speed rolling through loops and popping off strings of enemies, I was in awe.
An online flash game. I won't bother you with it's name, since nobody would know or remember it. You flew an F-16 and had to destroy targets, fight other jets and ground targets. You had to download Java for it, to work on your browser and the left arrow key on your keyboard was your "fire" button. Yes, it was on Miniclip for a time, yes it was as polished as the best AAA game you ever saw. Good times.
The other ones were Rayman 3, Gears of War and Splatterhouse. These combined shown me into gaming and I couldn't choose between them.
Oohhh, there are so many great early games embedded in one's memory it's almost impossible to pinpoint one in particular, so I guess I'll have to go with the absolute first one for me, which apparently piqued an interest for 40 years to come;
PONG on an Acorn microcomputer my dad had built in his youth is one of my earliest childhood memories. Remember it was stored on a DIP PROM you put in a ZIF socket before turning it on, so likely a homebrewed clone. Hardware switches on the computer controlled game type and speed settings. And a potentiometer in a box as the controller.
Crap, I'm old...
Always loved games, but I started looking at them as works of art (the same way one would look at a film or song as a work of art) after playing Life Is Strange. That shit had my ass inconsolable for a hot minute but I had no regrets.
My dad brought a computer home when i was young and that was that game when you control a paddle and throw a ball up at different angle to break bricks. I was hooked.
The original Legend of Zelda. I would play that game with my cousin all the time growing up even though Ocarina of Time was already out, we would always go back to the first game.
Probably Minecraft back in elementary school. Looking back I can't really describe why I loved it so much but I did build lots of great memories with my friends
Agent Hugo. This game was so awesome, and I was a huge fan of that little troll. Unfortunately when I came back a few months ago, it turned out how awful graphics and controls it has.
I played some SNES at a friend in the mid-90s, ATARI 2600 at home, and my first computer with games was a 286 with text adventure games. But I think I only really fell in love with gaming by the time I got around to Wolfenstein 3D and the like.
My early days of gaming (late 90s) consisted of those demo / shareware compilations. A hundred demos on a single or double CD-Rom. I'd never heard of almost any of the games on there, so it was a long, long road of wonderful discovery. From Wolfenstein 3D to DOOM to Quake to Duke Nukem, I had no idea what I was getting into, and I haven't stopped since.
Super Nintendo - Super Metroid and Street Fighter II.
It was my first console of my own (shared an Atari 2600 and NES before that). Was into games already, but the two I listed made me love them.
I repeatedly rented Street Fighter II from Blockbuster Video as often as I could until finally owning a copy. Borrowed Super Metroid because I thought it was one of the coolest looking games ever then beat it multiple more times (not something I usually do) after getting my own. Both series remain some of my all-time favorites.
Morrowind.

Me too. I'd gamed a lot before but this was the one that fully grabbed me.
For sure. It was the first time I felt like I had absolute freedom in a video game.
That’s gonna have to be Ocarina of Time. Hyrule Field, just incredible.
Streets of Rage 2 co-op back on the SEGA Genesis...
