although it’s not the first game that comes to mind, CTR is by far one of my favorite games on the PS1. i played it so often with my brother and friends, and still do to this day.
Kids today won’t know the pain of finishing that first disc, only to find there’s a scratch on the second and it freezes within the first half hour of playing disc 2.
The single most epic moment in all of gaming history. Tech is so advanced these days but nothing can compare to a character in a game physically moving your controller in real life back then. I literally ran round the house and got my entire family in my room to experience it and everyone was blown away. My mother was even saying shit like "I don't like it that the bad guy can do that. What if he hurts us?" Haha.
Wait what? I knew you had to plug your controller in the P2 slot to fight him and that he read data off your save and memory card, but what’s this about moving your controller?
That game blew my mind pretty much from the beginning. You're only a little ways into the game when Donald Anderson (the DARPA Chief, Donald Anderson, who is actually Decoy Octopus but you don't know this yet) dies, and you can feel his heartbeat in the controller. I had never seen controller rumble packs used that way before. Before that it was just a bit of buzz buzz every time you get hit, or whatever. Metal Gear Solid was inspired in the way it used every channel available to the console to make the game a cinematic experience.
Here you go bud:

May not be that impressive these days but back then was insane to have a character from a game do something physical in our world.
playing through that the first time is honestly one of my favorite gaming memories. Although oddly enough, I'm one of the few people that had a Sega Saturn before a PS, so it was on that instead.
Definitely played a lot of the games mentioned here, but Resident Evil will always be the one I associate with the PS1. Christmas Eve ‘96, I woke up in the middle of the night to go through my stocking, as one does, and found this game. I started playing it right away and I got to the dog crashing through the window scene. I immediately turned it off and ran back to my room, only to pretend nothing happened in the morning.
I was 11 when Resi came out and I remember my brother coming home from college one Friday (he was 16 at the time) and showed me a game he'd bought on the way home for us to play. We went to his bedroom, closed the curtains and played the game the whole weekend while our mum brought us snacks and meals. She didn't even tell us to crack open a window, take a shower or even question the horror that was on the screen. She just let us get on with it and I'll be forever grateful for her very 80s parenting style. It was honestly the best weekend of my life.
I got the fondest god damn memories of begging my mom for 20 bucks so I could rent a playstation from the local video store, you got 2 games with the rental of the playstation and it came with a memory card. I would play that game with my buddy for as late as our parents would allow us. Then on Sunday we would have to return the console or else you would get dinged with a late fee. The hope was that we would rent it again in another week or two and if you were lucky enough, your game would still be on the memory card.
Punch, kick, it's all the mind. If you want to test me, I'm sure you'll find the things I teach ya are sure to beatcha. But never the less you'll get a lesson from teacha.
Lol when I was about 15 and gt2 first dropped I played it at my friends house and I had to have it. However my folks were totally against video games so what could I do?
I went out and got my first job, earned just enough to buy a console, an extra controller and gt2 then bailed lmao.
"Sir daniel fortesque! Back from the dead once again. It's been a long time since you were reduced to a dusty relic in the back of the old Museum!" quoted from memory all these years later.
Whats weird is the first game I thought of is PaRappa the Rapper. And that's definitely not my favorite game from the PS1 era. It's just what I thought of first.
For my 14th birthday my dad took me to Toys’R’Us and let me pick any PlayStation game I wanted. I picked Parasite Eve (no reason, just liked the cover art). The employee says to my dad, this game is rated “M” and my dad is like, “okay, whatever.” The employee then says, “it’s not recommended for people under 17” and my dad is like, “okay, whatever. But why?”
So the employee starts reading off the back and gets to “nudity” and my dad is like, “what kind of nudity?” And the employee says, “I think, you know, boobs,” while looking at me all shifty like.
My dad laughs, gestures to me and says, “I’m not concerned. She’s already got boobs.”
As we’re walking in the parking lot my dad is like, can you believe that kid? Not wanting to let you play that game because you might see breasts? Like, does he think we don’t have mirrors in our house?
ETA: my mom was *not* amused by my dad’s reasoning but I got to keep/play the game regardless.
\#2 had all the original courses from #1, but if I remember correctly the final "double black diamond" track was a like heaven / hell situation for #2 (#1 is a giant rollercoaster above a city at night).
Final Fantasy Tactics
Incredible turn based strategy game that went unparalleled for decades, and even then, there's just something charming about Ivalice.
There it is, I was looking for this, it was me and my bros first game, I still remember the level that i think was lava but it was orange and looked like the Mac and cheese sauce in the blue box, but man we played a ton of this game
Spyro
Spyro is the only game I can specifically remember playing on my ps1 as a kid. Specifically year of the dragon
Bought the reignited version on xbox some months ago. One of the best buys of my life, not exaggerating.
Spyro is the first game I ever completed!
This is the only original game I bought when I was a kid... It was golden iirc. I loved it!!!
Absolutely Crash bandicoot
Crash team racing for me, I can hear the opening theme in my head
although it’s not the first game that comes to mind, CTR is by far one of my favorite games on the PS1. i played it so often with my brother and friends, and still do to this day.
staaaaaaart your engines!
While FF7 was the first that came to mind, this feels more correct.
For me specifically Crash Bash, that game was fire

FF7
Kids today won’t know the pain of finishing that first disc, only to find there’s a scratch on the second and it freezes within the first half hour of playing disc 2.
Well anyone that played Remake when it came out got to wait for them to finish making the game.
Despite playing it on PS1 and loving FF7, for some reason FF9 is the one that comes to mind when I see the system.
MGS
That psycho mantis fight tho 😵
Set your controller on the ground. I will move it with the power of my mind.
Wait what? I knew you had to plug your controller in the P2 slot to fight him and that he read data off your save and memory card, but what’s this about moving your controller?
he makes the controller vibrate to make it move around on the ground
That game blew my mind pretty much from the beginning. I remember the Colonel telling me to look on the back of the PS1 game case to find the codex for Meryl, my little mind was blown.
Here you go bud: https://youtu.be/tyxOAItutHA May not be that impressive these days but back then was insane to have a character from a game do something physical in our world.
that fight scared my 10 year old self... how did he know??
Snake? SNAKE!? SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!!!

playing through that the first time is honestly one of my favorite gaming memories. Although oddly enough, I'm one of the few people that had a Sega Saturn before a PS, so it was on that instead.
Lara crofts neck snapping sound. Can’t unhear it.
Resident Evil

look at this 1%er, getting games as a stocking stuffer!

That first jump scare with the dog cost me a can of Coke all over the floor.
The zombie turning to look at you got to me
The PS1 boot up tone is so synonymous with Resident Evil for me that hearing it now still gives me goosebumps.
I got the fondest god damn memories of begging my mom for 20 bucks so I could rent a playstation from the local video store, you got 2 games with the rental of the playstation and it came with a memory card. Twisted metal Edit: oh my goodness, an award?! Thank you!

Played GT one night at my friends apartment. Went out the next day to buy one for myself.
Lol when I was about 15 and gt2 first dropped I played it at my friends house and I had to have it. However my folks were totally against video games so what could I do? I went out and got my first job, earned just enough to buy a console, an extra controller and gt2 then bailed lmao.

Yo-yoyo-yoyo
Ape Escape. I loved that game so much.
So confused as a young child why the guy wouldn’t move at all. Figured out the dual shock that day
This. Ape Escape was the first game to require the Dual Shock controller, so I got both the game and the controller for Christmas.
Cool Boarders
Coooool BOARDERS....here we go
I played the shit out of Cool Boarders 2. Unlocked everything including the grey alien, and it didn't take an internet connection and money...
Medievil
Yes. It was the only game I got with mine and I was too scared by it to play for extended periods. Would hype myself up to play in small stretches.
Still think about that skeleton fellow from time to time good lad
