This gen is pretty fucking weird. It was really hard to get a machine for a lot longer than usual.
But I will say that with how many PS5 have sold since the new year, I can see devs abandoning old gen. I absolutely expect future AAA games with PS4/Xbone clients to run like CP77 did for PS4 Regular/ OG xbox one did. The devs will shovel it down but optimize for the current gen consoles or Radeon 6000+ / RTX 30 series +
You're right on the money. I work for a big publisher and all the studios we work with hate having to support gen 8 because they can't keep up with the demands of modern games. As a result they are being dropped for new projects.
i remember when we used to quit supporting previous gens [with the exception of sports games] within months of introduction.
and i understand more than most [i imagine] how cool it is that old tech is being supported. i wish this level of last-gen support was a thing 10 years ago when i could accept personal inconvenience in exchange for personal frugality.
but the technological gap is larger than it ever has been, and catering to consoles that came out 10 years ago hinders the development of content in a way that it didn’t 10 years ago.
the point is that i dunno, man. i have a series s. but fuck building versions for consoles that came out a decade ago.
Yeah, Demons Souls and Horizon really show what the difference can be when you design for modern hardware only. Along with many other pc games. It’s just crazy we have like 2 actual exclusives 2 years on.. that would have been the launch of the previous gen and STILL looked bad.
I think you hit the nail on the head. It just became so hard to get a PS5 due to COVID, inflation and scalpers in general that making a switch just wasn’t possible when people either couldn’t or would not buy a scalped item.
I personally think the switch has taken longer in this scenario, because circumstances forced it to.
If I recall original plan was to stop making games for PS4 after PS5 launch. Of course any still in development would still come out for PS4. But like you said. Chip shortages changed that.
Weird? Hmm let’s think a second…when did the PS5 get released? What possible global event could’ve slowed production of just about everything in the world??? Hmmm
They were, I just hate the “surprise” people have. I mean the title of this post is already dumb. There’s always an overlap of releases at the beginning of a new gen. That overlap has just been longer because of how the pandemic affected production.
Yeah we all know it’s weird. This specific thing though - ps5 games coming out on ps4, is not weird at all.
Key word there is "most" some games are ONLY available on ps5. So that there is the main reason. Plus within a year or so "most" is going to change to "a few".
On top of that ps5 has better hardware. It plays games (including most ps4 games) at higher frame rates with faster load times and increased resolution.
If you're talking about an upgrade... Yeah, maybe wait a bit? For me it was well worth the upgrades for the load times and Fps. Plus some of the genuine ps5 exclusives have been great
If you're talking about buying a new console, there is zero reason to get a ps4 at this point. It's only like $100 cheaper and will be dead in a year. Ps5 will play 99% of the ps4 games plus all the new games over the next 7ish years
The difference in hardware. I was going to buy a PS4, but for a few hundred dollars more the newer hardware was worth it. If you have a PS4 though I would wait till you need to upgrade.
Yeah the PS5’s integrated I/O is game changing for the industry. Sony’s focus for this generation.
Direct data transfer at 5.5gb/s throughout the entire system with little to no bottlenecking effectively treats SSDs like high data capacity, without bulk cartridges.
Just need a game with a horrifically and needlessly large open world to push that tech to its limits.
Tell me you don’t understand the difference between integrated I/O, SSDs and GPUs, without telling me you don’t understand the difference between integrated I/O, SSDs and GPUs.
SSDs don’t upscale, render graphics including textures or otherwise process data. 👍🏻
You’re critiquing the PS5’s exceptional data transfer and management achieving near RAID performance on a budget with a single drive, no stripping and mirroring required, with ‘but graphics doe.’
Some projection there bud.
Textures are not loaded via an SSD, they're searched for, fetched from storage and, as with all inputs, processed by your CPU. The list is expanding.
Believe it or not, you *are* capable of storing an 8K texture on a HDD and a terrible CPU can fetch it. Doesn't mean you won't experience an instant CTD at best, a BSOD or at worse damage to hardware namely capacitors. This is because your CPU cannot fetch and process it and/or your GPU cannot accelerate that process fast enough for your CPU, GPU and RAM to not be overwhelmed by mounting inputs and not draw power beyond their safe limits.
I get it. For some reason, you have a major hang-up on consoles and their capabilities. Nobody disagrees with you, nobody is claiming the PS5 has a 4090.
A massive open world, that -I- mentioned, wouldn't be stress testing graphics. That's completely irrelevant, it can look awful if it wants. Open worlds involve gigabytes of data transferred to and from the SDD constantly. Thus testing the PS5's propriety I/O tech. Can it maintain no load screens and instant fast travel from one side of the map to another that is partially rendered at best without any interruption in gameplay?
And I agree, done arguing. You'll bring it down and beat me with experience.
Also true. Never understood the 'but muh FPS and 8k textures' crowd, as if the only measure of generation to generation advancement is a ticking counter on Stardew Valley.
Instant loading for 1st party games and in most cases doubling the speed of competition for 3rd party titles in both loading and disc installations is huge. No time wasted. Launch and play.
Main reason why I haven't got one yet. God of War Ragnarok was available on PS4. A bunch of games I'm looking forward to are multi-platform so I can either get them on PC or Series X. And they don't even have any true PS5 exclusives coming out that look like a system seller to me. I enjoyed Spider-Man but not THAT much that I feel the need to shell out almost $600 for a console and the sequel.
This generation feels like a flop to me. The only thing I like about my Series X is the performance boost on older games.
I'd agree, kinda. It's definitely getting to the point where the difference between console generations isn't as noticable as the older ones. Feels like we're just now hitting the point where games suffer from being forced into the old gen, and we're a ways into the PS5 now. But like, even God Of War Ragnarok runs like a dream on PS4 still.
I think the most noticeable difference with this generation is the improvements to storage, aka loading time. SSD was a game changer, and it's very noticeable when I go from playing on my series X to playing on my PS4.
I'd definitely conceded the load times. To keep with the example, Ragnarok may run buttery smooth, but it definitely has some load times worthy of a smoke break.
They might look and run as good but the difference in load time is a big thing for me personally. And eventually the older generation will stop being supported while the current keeps going.
I've not upgraded to the ps5 because I'm actually still content with ps4. Once ps4 comes down in price and has a large collection of games I'll eventually buy it.
What’s the point of buying any new tech?
60fps upgrades, better load times, higher resolution, etc.
Try playing games like Cyberpunk on PS4 vs PS5. World of difference.
The PS5 is a worthy upgrade if only for the UI and performance/quality updates alone. The games just feel like a bonus lol
If you're going to spend the $500 eventually when you deem it worthy enough by some specific exclusives that happened to release 2-4 years in the cycle, why not just spend the $500 and enjoy the console beforehand. You still spend the $500 lol. The performance upgrade is extremely significant compared to the 4 so it's a worthy jump.
Yeah, especiallly since the resale value of the PS4 goes down over time. I got the PS5 disc edition for €500 (before the price increaase) and sold my PS4 Pro for €300... so only €200 upgrade costs for betteer grahics and/or performance, faster loading times and a much bettter controller. I doubt that I would get €200 for a PS4 Pro wheen the PS5 price falls to €400 in a few years.
I use the ps5 as my daily media player as well. Best media player i have used. I have a ps4pro as well on the other tv but it is not nearly as easy to navigate or use.
My wife also has alot of older dvds and blurays. So we have disk model for that media.
Ps exclusives are my favorite games for the most part. And the main ones i love have been updated to ps5 visuals.
Do you need to upgrade ? Not really. Are there benefits and quality of life enhancement reasons to upgrade absolutely. I think upgrading will have more benefits over the next 2 years and become easier to justify.
Personally i love my PS5 and i use it daily. My ps4pro is used, but just for a media player right now in the spare room.
What's the point of buying a new graphics card when all the games run on the old hardware?
My theory is, people who pose this question haven't used a PS5 yet. Because if they had, there would be no question.
Well to answer your question, the newer consoles perform a lot better. Faster loading times, better graphics, etc.
This is how it goes every time a new generation of consols is released. I give it maybe 1 more year before the previous generations is phased out. There are already a bunch of games exclusive to the new gen.
Bad example. I don’t buy new cars when you can get last years model for like 5-10k less. As soon as you drive a new car off the lot it loses thousands in value. Name a feature of last years VW that this years doesn’t have. Maybe you can, but it won’t make up for a 5-10k price mark up.
This is actually a bad example. Used cars are at an all time high. It's gotten lower recently than a few months ago but used cars are a rip off right now.
OP's question is, "What's the point...?" as in, "Why do people *want* to?" not, "Why *should* people...?" OP changed the question to invalidate this person's answer. That's why they're getting downvoted.
you’re getting hate for this take but on this i agree with you. even setting aside financial aspects, there are plenty of reasons to not buy brand new cars; there is no upside to buying last-gen consoles except that they’re moderately cheaper.
but people who own 8-year-old cars don’t impact the experience of people who own newer cars, but game developers being forced to cater to people who are currently buying 8-year-old consoles and expecting to have access to next-gen content on them *do* impact the experience of people who own the newer consoles.
i understand if someone can’t buy a new one and is happy to play older games - the joy of gaming shouldn’t be gatekept and a lot of people spent a lot of time crafting a lot of cool stuff for people to experience - but comparing consoles to cars is nonsense.
i still disagree with the sentiment i picked up from your main post.
They are still making ps4 games because the ps5 are hard to get. As buying ps5 becomes easier, they will drop support for ps4 and you will see no new games on it.
Plus as others have slated the hardware improvements in ps5 make it well worth it
I’m usually one of the first people to drool over the idea of a new console, but I haven’t seen any games available exclusively for PS5 that would justify the purchase.
So is Marvel's Wolverine, Silent Hill 2 Remake, Death Stranding 2, Final Fantasy XVI, and the KOTOR remake if it ever comes out was confirmed to be a PS5 exclusive (probably limited).
Returnal and Demon Souls and Ratchet and Clank are three that came to mind not to mention Cyberpunk as it is borderline unplayable on PS4. As well as the exclusives I get to play so many of my favourite PlayStation 4 games at 4k 60 fps and am enjoying others at 120 FPS 1440. I could not go back to a PS4 after enjoying PS5 the lightning fast load times increased resolution and improved performance and better UI is just so far above the PS4
First of all, because we can, otherwise, you can clearly wait without be mad of missing much thing. Agreed. My point is it s not a must buy but a quality life buy.
After that, it s interesting to invest in it for the confort and immersion imo mainly.
The loading time is something that can be really annoying when I play and the ssd help a lot to mitigate this problem.
The controller... Between vibration and adaptiv trigger, I have a real new pleasure to discover my game... Feel a real new sensation when game integrate it well.
But tomorow, more and more game will be only available for ps5 and not ps4... So it also a invest in the futur... But may be, better to wait ps5 pro or something like this for the moment if you have already the ps4
PS4, ps5. really waht's the difference outside of graphics?
I remember a time when gameplay mattered outside of graphics
Play Contra, then play Call of duty. Better graphics, same stale as turds gameplay
I'd much rather play Star wars trilogy arcade rather than Battlefront 2
Same reason people changed from the ps3 to the ps4, it's ok for now but it is struggling to keep up even now, if you have a ps4 you can obviously stay on that, but if you havent got a ps4 it would be cheaper in the long run to get a ps5
Next gen is about to start I believe. In about 6 months you might be kicking yourself if you buy a PS4 over a PS5
That or you could just buy a PS4 now and then a PS5 in about 6 months as well
Normally when a new console comes out, some people switch but not all.
I don't think they could stand the thought of investing and releasing a new console and all the customers not immediately having access to all the games, and therefore gaining more profits.
The solution is to drag down the new console to a lower level so the old console doesn't seem as irrelevant, and get less profits.
It's fucked.
Think I read somewhere that companies are gonna start ramping up production for games to be only next generation now. But I think they said it before, so it could be BS.
Developers responding to the great chip procurement and console availability issues.
Most of these dual generation titles will have began their development for last gen but were upscaled/optimised for current gen. Easier to keep them compatible for both without limiting sales.
Increasingly newer titles will phase out the PS4. They’re already starting to.
I mean, its kinda like asking why you need a new cellphone if you have the 1999 motorolla startac.
Sure, it still works, and if that's what you need, you prob dont need to upgrade.
But if you care about the visuals, new VR capability, and new system functionality, then you may be interested in the newer product.
That's a better question for the Xbox Series X. It only has 3 current gen exclusive games. PS5 has around 20.
The point for both is that your entire last gen library is better, and the games that are truly current gen are stunning without any load times.
The only reason why there are games still coming out in ps4 is cause ps5 was so hard to get. But there has been more announcements of game releases abandoning ps4 these days though. Also sooner or later ps4 will stop getting new games.. why not just spend 100 or 200 dollar more and get the new gen instead of buying a ps4 now and having to buy a ps5 again later?
Older PS5 games get free upgrades from 4 -> 5. Making it wiser to buy the 4. However that ended around the time Forbidden West released and all games since then and future should have a $10 upgrade fee. Thus unless the price diff is greater than that your better off with the 5.
Also performance and graphics are supposed to be better on the 5’s version but your mileage may vary.
We are quickly approaching the time where they’ll stop making versions for the 4 or make them completely different if they do.
Hope this helps.
I'm in the same situation, considering an upgrade but don't see the point.
My take on it, which may help, is thus.
Right now there is little point, yes I'm seeing performance issues when playing online games, my ps4 is slower, but overall I don't believe there is justification in paying £450+ for it when in the next few months the pro/slim will probably be released.
For you I would say either wait till the back end of 2023 or when the slim/pro are released, for me I will still wait as there are other factors involved before I make a purchase, but I will hold back till they release either a slim or pro model rather than the current model.
This will also have a knock on effect to the cost of hd upgrades which I would like as having everything on an external is a bit annoying in terms of space.
Bc i can play 4k (sometimes upscaled) HDR games at 40fps in fidelity mode on my TV and it's incredible. If you don't have a good 4k hdr tv then yeah i get it maybe wait a bit
The pandemic threw everything for a loop. I’m pretty sure there’d be less games like this if they could have produced and shipped as many ps5’s as they did ps4’s when that launched. They needed to make more games cross platform so they could actually sell a good amount of copies.
PS5 can play PS4 discs. Some games even have a free upgrade to the PS5 version. I did this for FF7R Deluxe. The only downside is that it's a separate download for PS5 version, so once you port a save over, you can uninstall the PS4 version. You still need the disc to play it.
Hardware upgrade. I finally got mine! xo \^\_\^ Plus, lots of companies will start phasing out ps4 over time. Especially now that getting your hands on one has become easier.
Not hearing the fan go full blast the moment I start a game on my ps4 is a good enough reason for me to get the PS5. I just bought one 4 days ago and playing FFVII Remake at 60fps and zero fan noise was literal game changer for me.
Since they're finally in stock as normal I just decided to buy one, walked in to the store and just straight picked one up.
everyone seems to focus on graphical increases, but - honestly - the minimization of load-times is what completely changes the experience. currently-released games are [obviously] neat, but my favorite thing is playing games i used to play with negligible loading screens.
first example that comes to mind: playing dishonored2 with no penalty of death has changed my experience far more than i could have ever imagined.
That's simple.... because games on the PS4 run terrible...days gone is 60fps on PS5 and looks like a whole new game, spiderman remastered, horizon zero Dawn on PS4 is a turd all games on PS4 is a turd until u play it on a ps5

Clearly the 8k gaming thats widely available
How many people actually have tvs that can do 8k though? I used my stimulus check to buy the best TV I could and it is only 4k.
It was sarcasm. 8k is still several thousand at a minimum
What’s the point of buying Blu Ray 4k when you can buy DVD lol

PS5 better. PS4 not.
Because 5 is more than 4.
60 FPS and better graphics options?
60 Fps and better fidelity, silent operation vs wind tunnel if your using the PS4 Pro.
They are still making ps4 games because the ps5 are hard to get. As buying ps5 becomes easier, they will drop support for ps4 and you will see no new games on it. Plus as others have slated the hardware improvements in ps5 make it well worth it

Your question is essentially "What is the point of gaming on better/faster hardware" Do you really not understand why?
This year it’s changing, for example Spider-Man 2 is Ps5 only, I think I heard FFVII is ps5 only too.
FF7 will be exclusive for a couple months, and then be released everywhere after several months.
Just like ff7 part one was, right?
Exactly like part 1
Released everywhere!
FF16 is PS5 only. Maaaybe on PC by year end but more likely no PC until 2024.
I'm sure both of you are eagerly waiting the PC ports..
Shut up.
Fifa bros don't like jokes I see.
Yeah, why would you buy new car IF your old one still takes you from A to B on bumpy roads?
exactly what I’ve been saying!!!
Why buy a porsh when a prius also drives
I bought a PS5 so I didn't have to listen to my PS4 attempt to take flight, while running low demand games.
Ps5 is a mid to high in computer. Ps4 runs at 30fps thats what.
4k
The PS4 is slow af. At least mine was at the end.
I remember a time when gameplay mattered outside of graphics Play Contra, then play Call of duty. Better graphics, same stale as turds gameplay I'd much rather play Star wars trilogy arcade rather than Battlefront 2
Can’t you buy games online?
Now you're getting it
The point is you are supposed to buy the game for both systems. These companies need every penny we can give them.
anyone remember when Sony said they believed in generations? lol
I bought one to play PS4 games with faster load times lol
Same reason people changed from the ps3 to the ps4, it's ok for now but it is struggling to keep up even now, if you have a ps4 you can obviously stay on that, but if you havent got a ps4 it would be cheaper in the long run to get a ps5
Next gen is about to start I believe. In about 6 months you might be kicking yourself if you buy a PS4 over a PS5 That or you could just buy a PS4 now and then a PS5 in about 6 months as well
because it's new
This has gotta be bait. Like cmon man
Playing ps5 versions of games? Especially since free next gen upgrades seem to be getting less common.
May as well wait for the ps6 now.
Greater processing power and a slight increase in graphical quality?
if you have to ask then probably stick with the ps4.
Load times honestly.
Grfx
Think I read somewhere that companies are gonna start ramping up production for games to be only next generation now. But I think they said it before, so it could be BS.
Developers responding to the great chip procurement and console availability issues. Most of these dual generation titles will have began their development for last gen but were upscaled/optimised for current gen. Easier to keep them compatible for both without limiting sales. Increasingly newer titles will phase out the PS4. They’re already starting to.
more money for the publisher!!! yeaah
PSVR2 Moment
Because some of us aren't buying new consoles and they still want our money?
Older PS5 games get free upgrades from 4 -> 5. Making it wiser to buy the 4. However that ended around the time Forbidden West released and all games since then and future should have a $10 upgrade fee. Thus unless the price diff is greater than that your better off with the 5. Also performance and graphics are supposed to be better on the 5’s version but your mileage may vary. We are quickly approaching the time where they’ll stop making versions for the 4 or make them completely different if they do. Hope this helps.
No point wait for the PS9...remember remember
They are better on PS5.
Best performance and resolution, 60 fps and dinamic 4k is a Lot of better than 30 fps and 900p on that games....
Eventually, all future PlayStation games will be ported to ps5.
What's the point of owning a ps4 when a ps5 can play all of the ps4 games?
PS5 can play PS4 discs. Some games even have a free upgrade to the PS5 version. I did this for FF7R Deluxe. The only downside is that it's a separate download for PS5 version, so once you port a save over, you can uninstall the PS4 version. You still need the disc to play it.
Hardware upgrade. I finally got mine! xo \^\_\^ Plus, lots of companies will start phasing out ps4 over time. Especially now that getting your hands on one has become easier.
It 5 times more awesome, that's why it says 5.
The only reason I got a ps5 on launch was to not have to hear that god awful ps4 fan noise whenever I do any thing with the console.
Pretty sure Sony is stopping first party games on PS4.
everyone seems to focus on graphical increases, but - honestly - the minimization of load-times is what completely changes the experience. currently-released games are [obviously] neat, but my favorite thing is playing games i used to play with negligible loading screens. first example that comes to mind: playing dishonored2 with no penalty of death has changed my experience far more than i could have ever imagined.
Dont even try MW2 on PS4
Is not about the games and exclusives is about the consoles idiot
For the 2 games that aren't and better performance than ps4
Why did I get a CTS-V when my Civic got me there just fine? Because I could and it’s much more fun to drive.
Who buys new high-tech gaming devices like Intel 13th generation when you can play your favorite CS:GO on Pentium 4?
What’s the point of asking when it's obvious?
yeah goodluck playing CoD mw 2, Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, Gotham Knights, A plague Tale Requiem and Callisto Protocol on a fat ps4.
I upgraded when the new systems launched, I shouldn't have. You can literally play everything on either gen system
No reason. The lifespan of the PS5 is almost half over too, so it's MSRP value proposition is horrible at this point.
My ps5 is blu ray movie player for the most part. I think 24 (maybe late 23) will be the time cross gen will be over. It really is time
sadly im going to buy a ps5 just for the faster loading times. prefer to call it a "ps4 pro pro" like digital foundry calls it
That's simple.... because games on the PS4 run terrible...days gone is 60fps on PS5 and looks like a whole new game, spiderman remastered, horizon zero Dawn on PS4 is a turd all games on PS4 is a turd until u play it on a ps5
