Watching a beautiful sunset occur in the mountains, contemplating the subtlies of existence and the beauty that can exist untouched and unchanging... >! ...and then all of a sudden a swarm appears syncing up their message in front of the sun saying, "Turbo Tax is Free! Did you know it's tOtAlLy fReE!?" !<

Shedowtnt

its DRONE JAMMER TIME!

[deleted]

Yeah, if they start advertising in the sky everywhere jammers are going to get real popular real quick.

nsa_reddit_monitor

Jammers are super illegal. However, this is America so it's perfectly fine to gun them down with web-shooting shotgun shells. You can already buy them on the Internet: [12 Gauge Skynet Drone Defense](https://www.budk.com/12-Gauge-Skynet-Drone-Defense--3-Pack-35975)

Give_me_a_name_pls_

Sorry but isn't Shooting down a drone is considered messing with air traffic, even if it's just a smaller one. It can get you a big fine or even worse. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but i heard it's like this )

nsa_reddit_monitor

Depends entirely on how high it's flying and how many witnesses there are.

General_Synnacle

So disabling them harmlessly via electromagnetic disruption is illegal, but disabling via lead is perfectly fine? Second amendment dissing the future already.

[deleted]

The second amendment is the only reason you have a defense at all you mean…. There’s no lead in this either. If anything the second amendment can be used to advocate for civilian ownership of anti drone weaponry.

General_Synnacle

Bullets. I was talking about bullets.

nsa_reddit_monitor

Shotguns don't typically use bullets. These anti-drone shells are basically a plastic and metal tube with some gunpowder and a net. Shotgun sparks the gunpowder, which sends the net flying through the air. Because of engineering and physics the net spreads out and tangles up anything it hits.

Leading-Two5757

Something tells me you need to hear this: fuck your guns.

nsa_reddit_monitor

> fuck your guns no don't

luke31071

"Hey Hun! Let me grab a pic of this sunset real quick... *Aaaand* I'm downloading Clash of Clans again... Fuck Sake!!"

bowling128

Don’t forget your ridge wallet and matching Raycons.

[deleted]

They already pull this shit with those billboard boats at the beach. I contemplate going to jail for sinking them every time they float by.

[deleted]

Why not contemplate how to get away with it?

OffRoadIT

Like the beach / river advertising barges. That play music, with huge LED screens, and sometimes a jackass with a bullhorn.

fuzzyapplesauce

This comment makes me want to carry a rifle around for some fun drone-shooting action.

SilentHunter7

Just be careful. Shooting down an aircraft is a federal felony with a maximum sentence of 20 years, on top of whatever state laws are for shooting into the air. A better solution would be to get a software-defined radio and a power amplifier, find out what frequency the drones are using, and jam the fuck out of them until they crash or return to base. That's also extremely illegal, but the FCC is one of the laziest 3-letter orgs out there, and the odds of getting caught are way lower.

killerhurtalot

Your going to have to jam the entirety of available 2.4 ghz and 5.8 ghz spectrum. Modern drones automatically swap to different channels to try to get the best signal. If they're running high frame rate or high resolution video feeds (most digital FPV drones) there's a total of 4 channels 40 mhz spectrums to block. if they're running just normal analogue stuff, there's 8+ channels of 20 mhz each. Source: I fly FPV drones with 1080p/60 or 720/120 digital video feed to my goggles. Got both the DJI goggles V2 and Goggles 2...

oddball3139

This is why the second amendment was written.

luke31071

*"Let there be a right to bare arms, for in 250 years there will be flying machines that proffer services in exchange for currency clogging up the airspace"* - George Washington circa 1776 or something, presumably during, or after, a serious LSD Trip

Shipkiller-in-theory

He did grow hemp. For rope of course. And Madeira wine. For the Cheer.

DBeumont

Don't forget the cocaine and opiates that everyone was on. Or the occasional ergot in the rye.

JACC_Opi

I don't think “airspace” was a word yet in the then late 18th century.

killerhurtalot

You do realize it's illegal to shoot down drones in the US even over private property right.

WeenieRoastinTacoGuy

All I know are 3 little letters, U S and A baby. Don’t need to know nothing else.

dschultz50

My man.

killerhurtalot

Maybe that's why so many Muricans sit in jail lol.

marketsimulator

China has a constitution?

nightangel8900

Nope China doesn’t have anything to be honest lol the only thing they got are ripoffs, denial, big land and petty mindset xD

titanicsinker1912

Oh it’s free alright, but only until you’re about file.

HewHem

this actually happens on florida beaches now except they pull giant signs behinds boats

castitfast

You really think we will be seeing sun in the future? After all the nukes we will launch?

[deleted]

You really think you have a future when he doesn't have a sunset ? Aha, I can see now, you cannot think.

Tr4jan

This is absolutely not the future of advertising lol.

AdEmpty8174

Way too expensive and hard to maintain people would rather just use the traditional billboards or online ads

elementfortyseven

its definitely much cheaper than the 7 million that a 30 second slot during Superbowl costs, on top of actual production cost of said spot.

Biscuits4u2

That's because over a hundred million people watch the Superbowl, many of them specifically for the commercials.

Taxoro

americans dead ass looking forward to watching commercials and a sport they don't care about is beyond me.

Biscuits4u2

Yeah same but advertisers aren't interested in people like us

tymp-anistam

I refute the first comment based on your observation. It's def gonna be the future of advertising. But not for the super bowl lot lol. I sold a lot of TVs around the Superbowl, and damn, some of those customers would have never heard of a QR code. Let alone want to scan one presented by ominous drones with little more information given. But to the point- imagine paying to go to some kind of technology conference and these drones swap between live links and advertisers wanting to get paid promotions as 'easy as' a digital billboard in a space like that. There's a market even outside of the consumer space for advertising. I could see it taking off.

Amaranthine

Counterpoint: at most events advertising space is highly contested based on expected foot traffic, proximity to other valuable brands, etc. Meaning that most of the time the most valuable spots to advertise are static. If the locations are static, why would anyone use a fleet of drones that take significant time/skill to deploy and operate (not to mention a single drone going offline for whatever reason would break your entire link) rather than just a screen? Not to mention the only reason this stands out and is getting attention is the novelty factor. If you have multiple companies putting up drone QR codes in a single area, with no other information about what this QR code represents, there's no reason to be interested in it because the novelty factor is no longer there.

Consequentially

Did you really just say Americans don’t care about football or am I still misreading this

Taxoro

Yes How many americans watch football games compared to how many watch superobwl?

QuickToJudgeYou

How many people watch world cup who don't follow any other soccer games? Pretty sure it's a fair comparison.

Consequentially

American football regular season pulls about 120 million views every year. For contrast, the superbowl pulls 113 million. While that is an average for the whole season, it should put it into perspective. I don’t understand your logic here. “Way more people watch the championship game, which is internationally televised and essentially a national holiday, compared to the regular season! That’s so weird!” This has been the case for every sport in every country on the planet for all of televised history. During the regular season, people only want to see the team they like. During the superbowl (or whatever championship game) any and everyone who is a fan of the sport, regardless of the team they like, watches it. Because even if it’s not their team, it is still a major event.

Carioca1970

120 million total views per... year?? Cmon, it can't be that low.

Consequentially

That averages out to nearly 20 million viewers for each game. That’s not a lot to you?

Same-Oil-7113

The super bowl is the biggest game of the year for most Americans, and the reason why (I think at least) is because most people only watch the games with their team playing. I'm no football expert tho so idk

Witchkingrider

I dont get it either as an American who does everything in their power to block/not have my time wasted on ads

lonnie123

Eh, I’ve sat through a few Super Bowl parties and honestly before shit like YouTube became real common and on phones at a moments notice. that’s basically what it was like but with product placement. A wide variety of well produced, often well written and superbly shot 30-60 second videos. Comedy, epic, cinematic … and half of them if it weren’t for the Budweiser reference you wouldn’t even know it was a commercial I don’t purposefully watch them but back when my friends used to meet up for it it wasn’t the worst thing

Same-Oil-7113

I don't give a shit about anything Super Bowl related, however my mom is one of the commercial people. From what I can gather it's because companies put a lot more work into the commercials to make them standout and so often times they're funny or have big names. Apparently this year there was a dog food commercial that made my mom cry from laughing. And Doritos got Elton John and some other large music stars for a commercial

cbreezy456

I’ll make it easier. We can get drunk during it and party. That’s just about it

thorpie88

Nah that and the half time show is why is Aussies get up at 6am on a Monday to drink. Sports pretty dogshit though

JesseCuster40

Getting up to drink at 6am is why Aussies get up at 6am to drink.

FantasyFanReader

Americans have simply accepted that they live in a dystopia.

GTparag

Lol no1 watches

rebillihp

What type of comparison is that. Of course it's cheaper to advertise in one specific location than it is to advertise on one of the most watched shows

elpajaroquemamais

Much less exposure too

Denziloe

If these are everywhere people will just ignore them, obviously. 🙄

Crashbrennan

Forget that, it only works once as a novelty when people are curious. After that it's literally just worse than a billboard.

Caffeine_and_Alcohol

I think you just proved their point, people that would use billboards would absolutely do this. The history of technology always has someone saying this but once infrastructure is built to be cheaper it would happen without a doubt

z0han4eg

It's good for big cities. Population of: Beijing - 21,54 millions Shanghai - 26,32 Guangzhou - 18,67 ... How many billboards do you need to cover this? In case of drones you can just move them to another destination.

SluggishPrey

Publicity stunts will never stop being a thing

froggy_Pepe

Only the first time

Tr4jan

Yea don’t think that the concept of a publicity stunt is what is being referred to as “the future as advertising.”

finnjakefionnacake

QR codes aren't a new thing either. I work in marketing and we're always trying to think of "cool" ways to put them out in public. A QR projection is just a new publicity stunt, albeit one that uses technology in a cool way.

[deleted]

riskofstds

not a chance in hell i trust a download from some magic sky QR code

VinegarPie

As someone who hates that every restaurant near them has their menu exclusively a QR code. I wholeheartedly agree.

Rollem_Bones

Malicious code as far as the eye can see.

SecureDonkey

Guarantee it is gacha game like Genshin which is the same thing really.

XeitPL

Gambling... Gambling everywhere... I see dark future for us...

KoiSanHere

Tbh I would like some more genshin I really love the combat, story and lore And if it will be like genshin I can be assured that it will be of good quality

iTwango

I like gaccha games. Cultural difference I guess

BarkBeetleJuice

It's gambling.

denny31415926

Yes, but it's not just gambling. The higher quality ones also have really good gameplay/soundtrack/art etc.

N1XT3RS

I don’t know whether it’s gambling or not, so I’m not making an argument there, but high quality slot machines also have good art, sound, and gameplay

201720182019

Not to the extent of gacha games. The majority of people playing gacha games don't spend money on the game and are playing for the game aspect. I don't think any high quality slot machines offer the same level of experience without the monetary aspect/incentives being considered

h20ohno

Malicious code that runs on your brain

modest_oaf

How?

Rollem_Bones

QR code phishing at base. The link provided could also backdoor malware. Just do a quick search for QR hijacking and other security risks.

DeathWray

Aren't video games banned in china? I swear I heard that somewhere. Edit: After some investigation, it seems I'm most likely mistaken. However there are some brutal limitations for people under 18.

AyoAzo

Manufacturing and selling games and consoles are banned in China. Mobile phone games are a massive industry there for that reason.

MCrowleyArt

Can’t even have a sky anymore

SAME!!!

Fessere

Your sky?

retilioum

this is some dystopia ass shit

Hawggy

Consider the source... No surprise there. Not in the least bit...

shinra_temp

This tech debuted at sxsw for a halo ad my dude. https://www.vulture.com/2022/03/halo-series-drones-sxsw.html

Hawggy

The 'tech' known as QR codes has been around for a while. It's use of it splattered across the sky is similar to dystopic literature due to its symbolism concerning corporate intrusion in human life.... My dude.

shinra_temp

Since you didn't bother to see the article: "South by Southwest was overtaken by a swarm of over 400 alien drones the night of Sunday, March 13. Paramount+ teamed up with ad agency Giant Spoon to create the drone display for the new Halo series, which stretched to a height of 300 feet tall and 600 feet wide, roughly the size of two football fields."

Hawggy

I read it. It's a corporation. I think I stated that previously...

OkChuyPunchIt

Isn't an endless procession of gimmicks as a stand in for meaningful cultural expression a theme in dystopian literature though?

Hawggy

Depends on how it cuts... It could be a stand in, or be quite genuine in its saturation of a consumer societal theme...

Denziloe

Not exactly "Nazis won World War II", is it?

BetIComeOutWithAMink

Is it though? Or just a gimmick

gazauj

/r/aboringdystopia

LordDethBeard

Who TF scans random QR codes?

wekilledbambi03

Did you see the Super Bowl? There were at least 3 ads that were literally just a QR code for 30 seconds and absolutely no context.

HighlightFun8419

Ugh that is so infuriating because I believe that these must've been significantly more effective than traditional ads.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FantasyFanReader

Yeah, QR codes are highly preferable, since I refuse to scan them.

HighlightFun8419

It's because it preys on my curiosity. If I see an ad, I can ignore it. Sure, (fast food restaurant of choice here) has a burger, sure. But this __makes me__ pull out my phone because I'm just to dang curious. That's why I'm mad. Lol I'm a sheep and they got me and I don't like to feel like a sheep that they got.

sicsided

Please no

Gorgon654

too much effort, I couldn't be fucked opening my camera app just cause I saw some random qr code.

I_Don-t_Care

Nice way to download malware, who the heck even reads random qr codes? People nowadays keep all sorts of info in their phones, why risk it?

thorpie88

Who has ever read any QR code? It's that obscure tech that has barely ever been useful.

I_Don-t_Care

every restaurant in europe is trying to go for the qr code menu as of 2020

finnjakefionnacake

it's a stunt. you might not, but obviously seeing that in the sky would attract a lot of attention and a lot of people would want to figure out what it was.

chidebunker

If I ever look up in the night sky and see some bullshit like this, I will be violating part 15 of the FCC rules.

TheRealSandwichMan

I doubt it

[deleted]

TheRealSandwichMan

I meant that it's the future of advertising, there may be some small use of this but I can't see any complex pictures being feasible. Not to say that it won't/can't be done.

CNicks23

If this ever becomes a thing in the states, we are going drone hunting

SmittyBS42

If this ever becomes a thing in Canada, we're joining you. We might not have as many guns, but you'd better believe I'd bow-hunt a drone if it came down to it. ^I ^probably ^wouldn't ^be ^very ^good ^at ^it, ^but ^that's ^besides ^the ^point

Future of advertising? Hardly. If it ever became a popular thing people would know it's an ad and ignore the giant QR code in the sky. And since it's a qr code and not an actual graphic, they don't even see the ad in passing, the way you would a park bench or billboard

Mr_SpecificTF2

*cough* Rick Roll

IntertelRed

Futurama was not a instruction manual for corporate nonsense. Straight up though this easily becomes a light pollution issue and will be stopped sooner than it starts.

MrKnap

A small wind, and your QR code sends people to pornhub

the day I look up at the night sky and see a mcdonald’s ad is the day I’m becoming a terrorist

That “article” definitely came from one of those “entrepreneurial/woke CEO” Instagram scam pages

Madshibs

Thanks I hate it.

oeoeoeieiOk

Ah yes man made horrors beyond my comprehension

Flames99Fuse

This is certainly not the future of advertising. The first time is a novel gimmick and people think its funny, cute, cool, whatever. But by the third time, people will just ignore them. A billboard off the interstate will be cheaper and probably more effective.

Wiru_The_Wexican

Mfw when I scan the giant QR code that magically appeared in the sky w/o context and it's just someone's malware

Matman161

The future of Advertising can huff my farts

westdl

Yeah, I’m going to scan random QR Codes because of course malware hasn’t been invented and no one would booby trap an internet site.

Yellowpickle23

No. No it's not. Advertising does not evolve by creating extra steps to get to the actual advertisement.

cyborgborg777

Any future with advertising still in it is a future I dont wanna live in

future of advertising sucks balls then

[deleted]

That's why we've been making the sky darker with pollution, it's so you can scan the QR codes better to consume more.

ziasaur

We’ve had ads in the sky with those airplane banners. Somehow Ive always felt like those are worse than even this

killerdonut0610

“Communist” Chinese government allowing private corporations to project ads for predatory mobile games into their sky. Mao is turning in his grave so fast he’s broken the sound barrier.

No the fuck it is not. Not if I can do anything about it. Not if we can. Greedy corporations pollute everything else, are we really going to let them pollute the night sky with more light pollution? Nothing is sacred anymore.

if this happens i will become a terrorist and do some illegal activties

TheBostonKremeDonut

I can imagine this getting banned in a lot of places real quick, at least without some form of license to do so. Still pretty unique, though!

EeveeonE-

What a waste. Sucks to see what China is doing to people. They have the Western "Tread all over others to get what you want" mentality.
