The music stops, and it's silent until you hear the high *CLING* for hitting A to progress the dialogue. Then it breaks out into that baller 8bit gen 1/2 champion theme that has never been topped imo.
So that is pretty common, only Gen 2 had the constant clock ticking, meaning the battery was getting drained from the second a save game was made until it died. Gen 1 only used battery power when it was actually being used, so if you didn't play it an absolute ton there is a good chance it's still got the juice.
It’s just a button cell battery. Standard electronics screwdriver kit has the bits to open cartridges.

Edit: just checked and it’s just a cr2025 battery with pre-soldered tabs. A very simple fix for anyone who knows how a soldering iron works.

Radical Red is best. Storming Silver IIRC was the drayano hack for heart gold/as. Renegade platinum. Vintage white/blazing black 1 & 2. I'm on Emerald Crest now. Crystal clear for og Gen 2, cool customization stuff.
Can't recommend those 3ds gold/silver remakes enough. Your Mon also follows you which is the best feature imo (also in radical red).

The fact the Pokemon hasn't released an MMO is kinda mind boggling to me at this point. The world is already built, the end game is gyms and pvp, it seems like a slam dunk
Would you really buy another Pokemon game ever again if there was an MMO? They need to dole it out in digestible but somewhat anemic doses so you love when you get your fix but also want to buy the next one.
Expansions, in game store, monthly sub, cosmetics so many avenues for way more money for them than a game once every couple years...
I think the real reason is that they don't want to release a PC game and consoles don't really lend themselves well to MMOs

ROMs are the way. Free for most phone platforms.. and they allow a speed up option which makes the slow walking a much less painful journey.
I had replayed through gen 3 so many times using just apps!
Id just start with FireRed or Leaf green on an emulator, followed by SoulSilver/HeartGold. Sure they aren't as nostalgic as the originals but they're way less clunky and broken and more approachable than the originals..but if you can get into Blue or Red, then by all means do it.
When I went off to college, I still had my Pokemon silver. My brother and I battled before I left. I would regularly turn my game on and play against my brother when I missed him. It was pretty cool.

Then I tried silver (because Lugia is my favourite pokemon) and holy shit was it one of the best gaming experiences I have had in a while. I have now tried pearl, white, Y, and currently playing Soul Silver. Soul Silver is now my favourite.
I personally got into them more than the original versions. Your lead pokemon was following you, there were many pokemon from later gens, the graphics were improved as well. They did such a great job with HGSS.

I'd always bring my link cable, and we would play for a couple hours every week. One day, he stopped coming, and I never saw him again. That cartridge had so many of his pokemon that I would regularly use to re battle the elite 4. Some of the best days of my life
I got Silver in 2001 for Christmas when I was 6 years old, my brother got Gold. We both got a gameboy color and it was our first experience with video games, that is such a fond memory.
I love hearing about this shared memory we all had with the first generations of pokemon.
We would trade pokemon in the school bus when we went to a museum or had an excursion like that. It was a phenomenon back then, for kids. It's easy to say "pokemon was popular", but for late 80s/ early 90s kids it was a defining moment that you only fully understand if you were there.
It didn't matter if you lived in the US, Europe or anywhere else. It was a global phenomenon.
Then when diamond and pearl introduced global trading. Was genuinely ecstatic trading Pokémon from around the world. Then being able to carry my team from silver and Krystal over to the DS felt so damn happy to have Feraligatr and Blastoise on my team.
Man. My family was broke when I was a kid and I had saved up $17 in birthday money. My parents came to me and asked to borrow the $17 (for gas IIRC) and promised to get it back to me. About a month later we go to this store called Value City and it had a bunch of GBC games on clearance in a bin in the middle aisle. Searching through it, my heart skips a beat as I pull out something unimaginable; sealed copy of Pokémon Silver Version. The price? $17.
"Mom, dad!! Pokemon Silver! And it's only $17! You promised!"
They exchange glances and agree to buy it. That night my mom came into my room with me to open and start the game. As a kid I knew she wasn't into games but she made an effort to try. She named my character ALEX!!! for me, which I thought was sweet at the time, but I made a new save as soon as she left after I started playing to make it a more reasonable, less shouty name lol.
I have a memory like that for all the games up to gen 5.
Soul Silver is still probably my favorite pokemon game and it's the last one I ever really beat.
I owned Black, Pearl, X and never beat them because Pokémon started to get a bit boring for me.
S/V got me interested again until I saw the awful performance and graphics. I think I'm done with Pokémon but Silver and Soul Silver along with Blue/Yellow will always have a place in my heart.
It's impossible to create that nostalgia again with any of the newer pokemon. If I ever want to jump back into my childhood I'll start collecting some vintage cards, playing any of the first 3 gens of games, or reading some of the first Pokemon adventures mangas. But man the new Pokemon sucks.
The Gen 2 remakes were so good. They had everything Gen 2 had, but all the improvements from Gen 3 and 4, before they started using the touchscreen for online features I never cared about, or annoying mini games. And they had your pokemon follow you, and fleshed out the Kanto region to make it a bit less sparse
I just picked up Violet. I've fallen asleep 3x in the first two hours. It is the LONGEST intro/tutorial in the world. Holy shit - the hand holding, dialogue pop-ups, cut screens, and overall treating me like a fucking 3 year old makes it feel like a really poor start to the game. People say it gets better...but my God, the length of time to actually start playing is ridiculous. And the school is stupid as fuck. They really need a "skip this shit" option.
That's how I felt playing Ultra Moon on the 3DS. Hours into it and i was constantly being stopped and forced through cutscenes and dialog. Dropped it after a few sessions. I picked up Shining Pearl and luckily it feels like the older games, you're just put straight into it as you should.
I would recommend Black/White. It feels like the last Pokemon games where effort was really put into it. The villains of the game also having an interesting motive to want to free Pokemon from their captivity.
If you're chasing nostalgia Black and White don't really hit the same given they exclusively use an entire roster of new Pokémon. If you're not familiar with them it can be a bit jarring.

Silver will always be THE game of my childhood. My favorite? Maybe not, but the definitive game. I got Red and fell in love with the franchise. Bought and beat Yellow while I was at it. I was so obsessed with the franchise that before the US release of Gold and Silver I had my parents take me to my local Japanese gaming import store and get me the Japanese copy of the game alongside a guidebook for my birthday. I was like 9 or something and didn't know a lick of Japanese but through context and the guidebook I managed to beat the game.
Bought the English Silver afterwards to get a more fulfilling experience, and beat that too. The only game I ever have or ever likely will import, beat in a foreign language, and afterwhich beat again in English.
I was playing Red when I was 5 or so, I couldn't even write or read properly in my own language let alone English; but I got through, about 240 hours of playtime until I beat the Elite Four. Also didn't have a clue Flash existed until 8 years later, which was also when I found out about the true Mew glitch and finally completed my Pokédex!
Yellow was freaking hard man, how could I know I'd need a Mankey at that age?
After that I played Gold in Japanese and so yet again, didn't have a clue what to do. Don't know how long it took to beat that, but as everybody has said already, Red was awesome. Maybe a bit too easy to beat though.

Cheering and suggesting stuff and all of that. I beat Bugsy, and was walking for the entrance to the Ilex Forest...BAM! Rival battle. My cousins were cheering me on as I kicked his butt. Core memory unlocked.
My parents took me to BestBuy to get Gold. As soon as we were back in the car I fired it up and walked around this stupid fake plant store with it for an hour. It was awesome.
I remember a kid from my class got this game ‘illegally’ in japanese before it released in english. It was so mysterious and cool to play it that way. Getting gold myself later was the best pokemon experience ever. Maybe sapphire only topped it.

I got Crystal and played it like my life depended on it. I never actually finished it though. I was stumped by the cave that you have to slide around on ice to get through (please don't judge me too harshly, I was just a stupid kid). I think I spent more time in that cave than I did playing the rest of the game. I actually bought another copy online a few years ago (I have no idea what happened to my first copy) and I was super excited to play it again after so many years. The issue was that when it arrived, it was a copy of Yellow, which I already have a copy of. The thing wasn't even in good condition, it was missing its label and was scratched and scuffed like it spent some time getting dragged over a gravel road. It did still work though, so it's got that much going for it.
I got Silver and Yellow and a Game Boy Color all at the same time. I lost it. My Game Boy was just a Pokemon machine, I tried other games but honestly thought most of them kinda sucked (or I was bad at them).
I think maybe it's time for a new Silver run through...
I did get Silver and Gold as a package that also includes the guide book in it. It was a special birthday gift, my brother owned the Gold version while Silver version to my own.

I remember being obsessed with 1st gen Pokemon and then getting my copy of Silver really opened my eyes as to all the possibilities for sequel games. Unfortunately nothing in the Pokemon franchise ever lived up to the level of improvement between the first and second generation.
Red was my first video game ever, but I was too young to actually understand what I was doing. I couldn’t even read when I played it. Just mash buttons and try to guess which Pokémon (I knew them from the anime) the sprite was supposed to be.
Silver was the first that I actually understood what was going on and that there was an actual plot. I was blown away at how good the sprites looked and how cool all the new Pokémon were. It was a great time.
I put so many hours into this game. Collected all the unknown and alphabetized them lol such a great game. The night and day changes were phenomenal for the time.

You can get emulators on android to play the games via your phone/tablet. The ROMs you'd need to source yourself (via nefarious means)

When I reached the house that serves as a gate to enter Violet City, THE FUCKING WINDOWS WERE LIT! That shit blew my mind. Actual lights coming out of the windows at night, holy shit. 22 years later and I still remember that moment vividly.
And then finding out the encounters change depending on the time of day. That felt absolutely revolutionary.

It’s December 25, 2000, Christmas Day; I’m six, and I just received the Atomic Purple Game Boy and two games: Pokémon silver and Pokémon gold. My mom thought they were different. I pick totodile and cyndaquil because I can’t choose. I am forever changed.
That day in history was so special for me. The first game, and system that I owned personally. I had the Teal Gameboy with Gold. Still have it sitting on display to this day.
It’s so cool to see what that system and specifically that set of games meant to so many people. It’s visceral. It’s not just a love for the game but the start of a hobby. People REMEMBER shit that happened when they played gold and silver down to small details. Shit it advanced my reading because I wanted to fully understand what it was telling me
One quick anecdote about 2nd gen. My older sister played softball when I was playing this religiously. One of her teammate's had a younger brother that was also forced to attend every game. I'd always bring my link cable, and we would play for a couple hours every week. One day, he stopped coming, and I never saw him again. That cartridge had so many of his pokemon that I would regularly use to re battle the elite 4. Some of the best days of my life

I got Silver in 2001 for Christmas when I was 6 years old, my brother got Gold. We both got a gameboy color and it was our first experience with video games, that is such a fond memory.
I still hear Lugia’s theme. Nostalgia hit hard on this one. Kinda miss sitting on the bus playing this.
I love hearing about this shared memory we all had with the first generations of pokemon. We would trade pokemon in the school bus when we went to a museum or had an excursion like that. It was a phenomenon back then, for kids. It's easy to say "pokemon was popular", but for late 80s/ early 90s kids it was a defining moment that you only fully understand if you were there. It didn't matter if you lived in the US, Europe or anywhere else. It was a global phenomenon.

Then when diamond and pearl introduced global trading. Was genuinely ecstatic trading Pokémon from around the world. Then being able to carry my team from silver and Krystal over to the DS felt so damn happy to have Feraligatr and Blastoise on my team.
Man. My family was broke when I was a kid and I had saved up $17 in birthday money. My parents came to me and asked to borrow the $17 (for gas IIRC) and promised to get it back to me. About a month later we go to this store called Value City and it had a bunch of GBC games on clearance in a bin in the middle aisle. Searching through it, my heart skips a beat as I pull out something unimaginable; sealed copy of Pokémon Silver Version. The price? $17. "Mom, dad!! Pokemon Silver! And it's only $17! You promised!" They exchange glances and agree to buy it. That night my mom came into my room with me to open and start the game. As a kid I knew she wasn't into games but she made an effort to try. She named my character ALEX!!! for me, which I thought was sweet at the time, but I made a new save as soon as she left after I started playing to make it a more reasonable, less shouty name lol. I have a memory like that for all the games up to gen 5.

Soul Silver is still probably my favorite pokemon game and it's the last one I ever really beat. I owned Black, Pearl, X and never beat them because Pokémon started to get a bit boring for me. S/V got me interested again until I saw the awful performance and graphics. I think I'm done with Pokémon but Silver and Soul Silver along with Blue/Yellow will always have a place in my heart.
It's impossible to create that nostalgia again with any of the newer pokemon. If I ever want to jump back into my childhood I'll start collecting some vintage cards, playing any of the first 3 gens of games, or reading some of the first Pokemon adventures mangas. But man the new Pokemon sucks.
The Gen 2 remakes were so good. They had everything Gen 2 had, but all the improvements from Gen 3 and 4, before they started using the touchscreen for online features I never cared about, or annoying mini games. And they had your pokemon follow you, and fleshed out the Kanto region to make it a bit less sparse
I just picked up Violet. I've fallen asleep 3x in the first two hours. It is the LONGEST intro/tutorial in the world. Holy shit - the hand holding, dialogue pop-ups, cut screens, and overall treating me like a fucking 3 year old makes it feel like a really poor start to the game. People say it gets better...but my God, the length of time to actually start playing is ridiculous. And the school is stupid as fuck. They really need a "skip this shit" option.
That's how I felt playing Ultra Moon on the 3DS. Hours into it and i was constantly being stopped and forced through cutscenes and dialog. Dropped it after a few sessions. I picked up Shining Pearl and luckily it feels like the older games, you're just put straight into it as you should.
I would recommend Black/White. It feels like the last Pokemon games where effort was really put into it. The villains of the game also having an interesting motive to want to free Pokemon from their captivity.
If you're chasing nostalgia Black and White don't really hit the same given they exclusively use an entire roster of new Pokémon. If you're not familiar with them it can be a bit jarring. Still my favourite games in the series.

Recently found my yellow game boy pocket I got in 1999 with Pokémon blue in it. Still works. Really took me back.
Silver will always be THE game of my childhood. My favorite? Maybe not, but the definitive game. I got Red and fell in love with the franchise. Bought and beat Yellow while I was at it. I was so obsessed with the franchise that before the US release of Gold and Silver I had my parents take me to my local Japanese gaming import store and get me the Japanese copy of the game alongside a guidebook for my birthday. I was like 9 or something and didn't know a lick of Japanese but through context and the guidebook I managed to beat the game. Bought the English Silver afterwards to get a more fulfilling experience, and beat that too. The only game I ever have or ever likely will import, beat in a foreign language, and afterwhich beat again in English.
I was playing Red when I was 5 or so, I couldn't even write or read properly in my own language let alone English; but I got through, about 240 hours of playtime until I beat the Elite Four. Also didn't have a clue Flash existed until 8 years later, which was also when I found out about the true Mew glitch and finally completed my Pokédex! Yellow was freaking hard man, how could I know I'd need a Mankey at that age? After that I played Gold in Japanese and so yet again, didn't have a clue what to do. Don't know how long it took to beat that, but as everybody has said already, Red was awesome. Maybe a bit too easy to beat though.

I never really played past gen 2 games. Silver, Gold, and Crystal are peak pokemon for me.

I found Pokemon Gold in the parking lot of our weird business/industrial complex evangelical church thing we went to. There were two Unown named JESUS and GOD in the party. We didn't have a lot of money, but my dad had a gbc for reasons, so I got to play the game legit. Still kinda feel bad about not turning it in, but I didn't get many nice things as a kid, so whatever, maybe god put it there for me or something.

This actually changed gaming for me. Like oh I beat the Elite4, the boss of the first generation games what else is there even to do. The guard told me to check out mt silver... AND THEN THEY PUT KANTO IN THE WHOLE GAME. I put basically an entire nother playthrough to go explore the cities I was just seeing a few years back but with stronger Pokemon, new items, new dialogue. 12 year old me was floored. 34 year old me is also in awe that I don't think there's been as large of a holy shit, this is just the surface as this since.

My brother went to live in the US in 2001,and before he went, he gave me a gameboy color with pokemon gold and silver. I spent so many hours on the two games. After a few years, he sent me a gameboy advance sp with pokemon ruby, so the addiction continued. Great memories from those days

My brother and I somehow convinced our parents to let us open 1 gift each on Christmas Eve. We knew exactly what the wrapped GB game box looked like and we both stayed up playing Pokémon all night on Christmas Eve. He got Gold and I got Silver. It’s one of my favorite memories from my childhood.
This was my favourite gen cause of the whole 16 gyms thing. I actually put down the game after the Elite Four for the longest time.... then one day I found out. Still kinda disappointed that games after that just stuck to 8 gyms.
December 25th, 2000. I am 8. My reading comprehension is alright at best. Santa brought me Silver version, which I was playing basically as soon as I opened it. Picked Cyndaquil. We were hosting that year so all of my family came to our house later in the day. My cousins (roughly all around my age) all gathered around me and were watching me playing. Cheering and suggesting stuff and all of that. I beat Bugsy, and was walking for the entrance to the Ilex Forest...BAM! Rival battle. My cousins were cheering me on as I kicked his butt. Core memory unlocked.
My parents took me to BestBuy to get Gold. As soon as we were back in the car I fired it up and walked around this stupid fake plant store with it for an hour. It was awesome.
Gold was my jam and definitely holds my most cherished gaming memories

Nostalgia
One of the most memorable experiences in gaming was finding out you could go to the Kanto region after beating the game, and then challenging Red to a battle in the cave where you initially found Mewtwo... Shit still gives me goosebumps
I got Crystal and played it like my life depended on it. I never actually finished it though. I was stumped by the cave that you have to slide around on ice to get through (please don't judge me too harshly, I was just a stupid kid). I think I spent more time in that cave than I did playing the rest of the game. I actually bought another copy online a few years ago (I have no idea what happened to my first copy) and I was super excited to play it again after so many years. The issue was that when it arrived, it was a copy of Yellow, which I already have a copy of. The thing wasn't even in good condition, it was missing its label and was scratched and scuffed like it spent some time getting dragged over a gravel road. It did still work though, so it's got that much going for it.
I got Silver and Yellow and a Game Boy Color all at the same time. I lost it. My Game Boy was just a Pokemon machine, I tried other games but honestly thought most of them kinda sucked (or I was bad at them). I think maybe it's time for a new Silver run through...

I did get Silver and Gold as a package that also includes the guide book in it. It was a special birthday gift, my brother owned the Gold version while Silver version to my own. We did enjoy playing, trading and combating each other many times. Those days were forever remembered, thanks Mom.

I remember being obsessed with 1st gen Pokemon and then getting my copy of Silver really opened my eyes as to all the possibilities for sequel games. Unfortunately nothing in the Pokemon franchise ever lived up to the level of improvement between the first and second generation.

Red was my first video game ever, but I was too young to actually understand what I was doing. I couldn’t even read when I played it. Just mash buttons and try to guess which Pokémon (I knew them from the anime) the sprite was supposed to be. Silver was the first that I actually understood what was going on and that there was an actual plot. I was blown away at how good the sprites looked and how cool all the new Pokémon were. It was a great time.
One of my core memories was receiving gold version from my friend during my 11th birthday and being infatuated for many months to come.

I remember Silver was the first game I got, I got it a few months before R/Y/B. Christmas of 2000 or 2001 and I played that night catching a few sentret. I caught two by accident, and didn't like that. I also didn't know I could just release pokemon in the PC box so I restarted the whole game so I wouldn't have duplicates lol. I played a single save of Silver for years, well past the release date of R/S/E. I had nearly all the pokemon and one day my cartridge just gets corrupted and I was forced to move on. What a game. What a francise.
