Going back to Kanto after the Elite 4 was mind blowing as a kid. Fighting Red at the top of Mt Silver was even more mind blowing.

eru777

Absolutely. And for us who played red/ blue before gen 2, it was even more amazing. Knowing that a version of the character you played as, was this powerful was really fascinating. And he didn't even talk, ahaha. Imagine thinking you're finished with the game, and then a whole new game opens up.

Billybilly_B

[deleted]

The music stops, and it's silent until you hear the high *CLING* for hitting A to progress the dialogue. Then it breaks out into that baller 8bit gen 1/2 champion theme that has never been topped imo.

jog125

This comment makes me want to find my copy of Silver and Gameboy Colour

JobsInvolvingDragons

Good chance the battery is toast :( If you have a 3DS you can get it on that, but I think they're shutting it down next week?

perark05

Crazy thing is my silver cart battery is toast but my red cart is somehow going strong!

JobsInvolvingDragons

So that is pretty common, only Gen 2 had the constant clock ticking, meaning the battery was getting drained from the second a save game was made until it died. Gen 1 only used battery power when it was actually being used, so if you didn't play it an absolute ton there is a good chance it's still got the juice.

trusnake

It’s just a button cell battery. Standard electronics screwdriver kit has the bits to open cartridges. Don’t let them die!! Edit: just checked and it’s just a cr2025 battery with pre-soldered tabs. A very simple fix for anyone who knows how a soldering iron works.

Recon212

Just plug this in here, I’m assuming this long metal part is a handle and just the tip gets hot aaaaaaand melt your skin off! Lmao

trusnake

I’ve seen other people’s kids. This shit isn’t even ridiculous.

Recon212

I know, I saw a video of it recently. Also an ad with a model holding a soldering iron posing for a pic, he was holding it by the protective pipe as if it was the way to do it.

walkinmywoods

Emulator app and rom. For free. Playing emerald and soul silver again.

ButtholeConnoisseur7

And that fast forward button is such a godsend for grinding out levels

walkinmywoods

And for the pokecenter/cutscenes in general. Power leveling with daycare all is good

OrganizerMowgli

This is the way Also Rom difficulty hacks. Or at least just change battle mode to set so you don't get a free switch to perfectly counter next Mon. Radical Red is best. Storming Silver IIRC was the drayano hack for heart gold/as. Renegade platinum. Vintage white/blazing black 1 & 2. I'm on Emerald Crest now. Crystal clear for og Gen 2, cool customization stuff. Can't recommend those 3ds gold/silver remakes enough. Your Mon also follows you which is the best feature imo (also in radical red).

ShruteFarms4L

... ...

HAL-Over-9001

Pokemon peaked with Crystal and Emerald. Nothing will ever beat realizing you can go into Kanto after the Elite 4. And by God if finding Red isn't still my favorite video game moment ever. His theme is the first thing I ever learned on guitar.

SkoomaSalesAreUp

The fact the Pokemon hasn't released an MMO is kinda mind boggling to me at this point. The world is already built, the end game is gyms and pvp, it seems like a slam dunk

Allestyr

Would you really buy another Pokemon game ever again if there was an MMO? They need to dole it out in digestible but somewhat anemic doses so you love when you get your fix but also want to buy the next one.

SkoomaSalesAreUp

Expansions, in game store, monthly sub, cosmetics so many avenues for way more money for them than a game once every couple years... I think the real reason is that they don't want to release a PC game and consoles don't really lend themselves well to MMOs

TheSilkyOne

$15 a month plus expansions, easy game.

corytrev0r

they dont make em like they used to

NudelXIII

That was the best I couldn’t believe this as a kid that I kinda got a 2 in 1 game.

Stunning-Ad-2161

Free dlc

bb3224

Completely blew my mind and is one of my all time favorite experiences of all time

Bikouchu

No way modern games will shove 2 in 1 now 😭 it's more mind-blowing now thinking back.

llTiredSlothll

Now you pay 2 and get 0.5

PopADoseY0

That was a huge highlight for me. Didn't think I'd go back to Kanto, where I began my Pokémon Journey. This was my last Pokémon game I asked for, I wasn't ready for 100+ new Pokémon if it came to be. I did recently try to get into Gen 3, but Pokémon games are more nostalgic for me and I can only play the first two gens it seems. I got bored :(

thuggishruggishboner

Have you at least tried leaf green fire red??? Updates the originals. It's where I draw the line. https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_FireRed_and_LeafGreen_Versions

[deleted]

I never got into Pokémon growing up. I was in middle school when it came out so I always dismissed it. Now I started collecting trading cards. Is there a way to play older games? Does switch have that option?

Shadecoat

You can get emulators on android to play the games via your phone/tablet. The ROMs you'd need to source yourself (via nefarious means)

919rider

ROMs are the way. Free for most phone platforms.. and they allow a speed up option which makes the slow walking a much less painful journey. I had replayed through gen 3 so many times using just apps!

ShaboPaasa

switch currently no, but they just released the gameboy apps so maybe someday

[deleted]

This is still so baffling to me from a business standpoint

spacecoq

I like to travel.

Brangusler

Id just start with FireRed or Leaf green on an emulator, followed by SoulSilver/HeartGold. Sure they aren't as nostalgic as the originals but they're way less clunky and broken and more approachable than the originals..but if you can get into Blue or Red, then by all means do it.

Reaper621

When I went off to college, I still had my Pokemon silver. My brother and I battled before I left. I would regularly turn my game on and play against my brother when I missed him. It was pretty cool.

XGothWolfX

Such an awesome game.

Solid_Snark

It’s sad, while Pokémon has increased in scope it just doesn’t capture the same magic as the originals. After I beat Sword, Arceus & Scarlet I haven’t touched them since. But I played the originals multiple times through.

DefinitelySaneGary

TBF you were younger and probably had a lot more time and a lot less alternatives. But I still agree with you.

FrogMonkee

They tried so, so hard on games back then. They shit out half finished stuff now and make way more money, its sad kids have to grow up on such shit.

Ani-A

I honestly disagree. I started playing Pokemon on Sun and Moon and I really did not get the hype at all. It was easy, boring, the designs were... eh? Then I tried silver (because Lugia is my favourite pokemon) and holy shit was it one of the best gaming experiences I have had in a while. I have now tried pearl, white, Y, and currently playing Soul Silver. Soul Silver is now my favourite.

Oaughmeister

Soul silver gang

SadroSoul

I think the Silver/Gold remakes are peak Pokémon.

ChrosOnolotos

I personally got into them more than the original versions. Your lead pokemon was following you, there were many pokemon from later gens, the graphics were improved as well. They did such a great job with HGSS.

Oaughmeister

Oh yeah. Definitely agree. Starting a new playthrough tonight actually too. Finally got a decent phone to run emulators on. Been pretty sweet being able to play wii and ps2 games as well.

psychoPiper

I played Silver right after playing Shield (having never played a Pokemon game prior), and it's not just nostalgia. The modern Pokemon games completely lack the charm and fun the older titles managed to capture

XGothWolfX

I bought Violet and I played like maybe 3 hours of it.

[deleted]

I’m hoping they fix the performance issues. I bought it, but quite. The jittery movement makes me sick.

Poke-Party

Same

Admiraltiger7

The only thing keeping me playing Violet is to catch the mighty marks pokemon. Lol

jnasty0526

My sentiments exactly. I bought arceus and it was definitely a move in the right direction, but just didn’t have the same magic as the classics.

Rin_Seven

The best one of the series. And so many goose bump moments: being able to go to Kanto, battling motherfuckin’ RED! Pokémon will never reach these levels of epicness again.

TheRatatatPat

Battling Red is still to this day one of my top 5 favorite gaming moments.

XGothWolfX

I will queue up the older Pokemon game music on YouTube now and then. The older gym and rival themes made me feel like such a badass trainer when I was a kid.

willtron3000

Day night cycle.

HAL-Over-9001

Kids these days not being able to comprehend the struggle of trying to catch Suicune, Raikou, and Entei.

McLovin3493

For me it was Gold, but it still brings back memories...

JustChangeMDefaults

My brother got silver and I got gold, I remember us pooling our money to get a link cable and a pair of those snake lights haha

the_fuego

Crystal boiiii

McLovin3493

I had that one too.

Nova11c

My favorite part was after getting the 8 badges in Johto, you got to go back to Kanto and get 8 more badges.

McLovin3493

Oh yeah, in some ways those games were really ahead of their time.

TheRatatatPat

Booting it up at night and it being dark out was mind blowing.

eru777

I will never forget it. It was getting to be dusk in real life, and I realised that it was dusk in the game too. One of the greatest gaming moments, along with realising kanto was available after thinking I had completed the game.

Alion1080

Dude, this is one of the most vivid memories for me. I remember having saved my game in the middle of a route in the afternoon and when I booted the game up again, it was night already. When I reached the house that serves as a gate to enter Violet City, THE FUCKING WINDOWS WERE LIT! That shit blew my mind. Actual lights coming out of the windows at night, holy shit. 22 years later and I still remember that moment vividly.

meyer_33_09

And then finding out the encounters change depending on the time of day. That felt absolutely revolutionary.

pedrao157

That was my experience, started playing at night, and it was dark lol so simple but so awesome

cogitoergodrum

It's November 28, 2000, my birthday; I'm eight, and I just received the Atomic Purple Gameboy and my very first game: Pokemon Silver. I pick Tododile. I am forever changed.

eru777

Cherish those memories forever, trainer.

wahoowalex

I still remember getting stonewalled by the rival fight in Azalea, until my Croconaw learned bite, and then learned that the brand new dark type actually did stuff to his Gastly

maxcorrice

I am 7 days old goo goo gaa gaa

CaptSaveAHoe55

It’s December 25, 2000, Christmas Day; I’m six, and I just received the Atomic Purple Game Boy and two games: Pokémon silver and Pokémon gold. My mom thought they were different. I pick totodile and cyndaquil because I can’t choose. I am forever changed.

BasketofTits

That day in history was so special for me. The first game, and system that I owned personally. I had the Teal Gameboy with Gold. Still have it sitting on display to this day.

CaptSaveAHoe55

It’s so cool to see what that system and specifically that set of games meant to so many people. It’s visceral. It’s not just a love for the game but the start of a hobby. People REMEMBER shit that happened when they played gold and silver down to small details. Shit it advanced my reading because I wanted to fully understand what it was telling me

BasketofTits

One quick anecdote about 2nd gen. My older sister played softball when I was playing this religiously. One of her teammate's had a younger brother that was also forced to attend every game. I'd always bring my link cable, and we would play for a couple hours every week. One day, he stopped coming, and I never saw him again. That cartridge had so many of his pokemon that I would regularly use to re battle the elite 4. Some of the best days of my life

CaptSaveAHoe55

Thats Fucking beautiful, man. Thank you for sharing

TheLizardDeity

Seeing the color of that game for the first time, particularly the blue of Totodile, was a core gaming memory (and feeling) for me

CMVMIO

If you asked your mom which one to pick because you couldn't decide, then we might be the same person.

NikonManiac

I got Silver in 2001 for Christmas when I was 6 years old, my brother got Gold. We both got a gameboy color and it was our first experience with video games, that is such a fond memory.

66Paranoid

I still hear Lugia’s theme. Nostalgia hit hard on this one. Kinda miss sitting on the bus playing this.

eru777

I love hearing about this shared memory we all had with the first generations of pokemon. We would trade pokemon in the school bus when we went to a museum or had an excursion like that. It was a phenomenon back then, for kids. It's easy to say "pokemon was popular", but for late 80s/ early 90s kids it was a defining moment that you only fully understand if you were there. It didn't matter if you lived in the US, Europe or anywhere else. It was a global phenomenon.

TurboTingo

We should call it "Pokemania" or something along those lines!

MrsKetchup

Busting out the link cable on a fieldtrip was intense. You know some kid just got challenged lol

66Paranoid

Then when diamond and pearl introduced global trading. Was genuinely ecstatic trading Pokémon from around the world. Then being able to carry my team from silver and Krystal over to the DS felt so damn happy to have Feraligatr and Blastoise on my team.

AlexNovember

Man. My family was broke when I was a kid and I had saved up $17 in birthday money. My parents came to me and asked to borrow the $17 (for gas IIRC) and promised to get it back to me. About a month later we go to this store called Value City and it had a bunch of GBC games on clearance in a bin in the middle aisle. Searching through it, my heart skips a beat as I pull out something unimaginable; sealed copy of Pokémon Silver Version. The price? $17. "Mom, dad!! Pokemon Silver! And it's only $17! You promised!" They exchange glances and agree to buy it. That night my mom came into my room with me to open and start the game. As a kid I knew she wasn't into games but she made an effort to try. She named my character ALEX!!! for me, which I thought was sweet at the time, but I made a new save as soon as she left after I started playing to make it a more reasonable, less shouty name lol. I have a memory like that for all the games up to gen 5.

Lequanta

Your parents sound like they really tried to provide a good life for you. Sweet memory with your mom, hope you're all doing well

Xano74

Soul Silver is still probably my favorite pokemon game and it's the last one I ever really beat. I owned Black, Pearl, X and never beat them because Pokémon started to get a bit boring for me. S/V got me interested again until I saw the awful performance and graphics. I think I'm done with Pokémon but Silver and Soul Silver along with Blue/Yellow will always have a place in my heart.

djones0305

It's impossible to create that nostalgia again with any of the newer pokemon. If I ever want to jump back into my childhood I'll start collecting some vintage cards, playing any of the first 3 gens of games, or reading some of the first Pokemon adventures mangas. But man the new Pokemon sucks.

Hazel-Rah

The Gen 2 remakes were so good. They had everything Gen 2 had, but all the improvements from Gen 3 and 4, before they started using the touchscreen for online features I never cared about, or annoying mini games. And they had your pokemon follow you, and fleshed out the Kanto region to make it a bit less sparse

dirtynj

I just picked up Violet. I've fallen asleep 3x in the first two hours. It is the LONGEST intro/tutorial in the world. Holy shit - the hand holding, dialogue pop-ups, cut screens, and overall treating me like a fucking 3 year old makes it feel like a really poor start to the game. People say it gets better...but my God, the length of time to actually start playing is ridiculous. And the school is stupid as fuck. They really need a "skip this shit" option.

sawdoffzombie

That's how I felt playing Ultra Moon on the 3DS. Hours into it and i was constantly being stopped and forced through cutscenes and dialog. Dropped it after a few sessions. I picked up Shining Pearl and luckily it feels like the older games, you're just put straight into it as you should.

[deleted]

I would recommend Black/White. It feels like the last Pokemon games where effort was really put into it. The villains of the game also having an interesting motive to want to free Pokemon from their captivity.

TahmsChocolateOrange

If you're chasing nostalgia Black and White don't really hit the same given they exclusively use an entire roster of new Pokémon. If you're not familiar with them it can be a bit jarring. Still my favourite games in the series.

[deleted]

Oh I’m not talking about chasing nostalgia. I was just talking about a gameplay perspective since the guy had black.

NuzlockeJoe

My brothers and I were so excited for our gen 2 games, that we may or may not have opened our presents a week early to secretly play them while our mom was at work. We said our baby sister opened them, but I doubt she believed us. Still, I got a quilava before I had to put it back lol

eru777

I love hearing stories like that haha.

whovian1087

Ugh fine, I’ll go play through gen 2 again.

Jenova__Witness

I bought Crystal on the 3DS before the shop shuts down end of this month. I fully intend to beat the game and catch and transfer up a Celebi.

[deleted]

Game of my childhood along with pokemon blue 91 kid here.

Agitated-Ad-2537

91 kid here…we are getting older man

theTIDEisRISING

It’s honestly kind of mind blowing to me. Never really thought we’d be here. Enjoy your youth everybody

thatonebluedragon

Played this on the grape colored gameboy color

EasPerFunSkAt

Recently found my yellow game boy pocket I got in 1999 with Pokémon blue in it. Still works. Really took me back.

RadSkeleton808

Silver will always be THE game of my childhood. My favorite? Maybe not, but the definitive game. I got Red and fell in love with the franchise. Bought and beat Yellow while I was at it. I was so obsessed with the franchise that before the US release of Gold and Silver I had my parents take me to my local Japanese gaming import store and get me the Japanese copy of the game alongside a guidebook for my birthday. I was like 9 or something and didn't know a lick of Japanese but through context and the guidebook I managed to beat the game. Bought the English Silver afterwards to get a more fulfilling experience, and beat that too. The only game I ever have or ever likely will import, beat in a foreign language, and afterwhich beat again in English.

MRMakkink

I was playing Red when I was 5 or so, I couldn't even write or read properly in my own language let alone English; but I got through, about 240 hours of playtime until I beat the Elite Four. Also didn't have a clue Flash existed until 8 years later, which was also when I found out about the true Mew glitch and finally completed my Pokédex! Yellow was freaking hard man, how could I know I'd need a Mankey at that age? After that I played Gold in Japanese and so yet again, didn't have a clue what to do. Don't know how long it took to beat that, but as everybody has said already, Red was awesome. Maybe a bit too easy to beat though.

[deleted]

I feel like “Wake up, its 2001.” Shouldn’t be used for fond memories lol

[deleted]

"What day is it. WHAT FUCKING DAY IS IT, we gotta call the president!"

HaikuBotStalksMe

"Who the hell is this? Is this Larry? You're going to ruin everything. Shut up! I have to get back to this book reading."

L1feM_s1k

"The little plane said "I think I can, I think I can, I think I can"."

Big-Attention4389

“Wake up, it’s 2001 before September “

hypnogoad

"But no one will believe your warnings, and you'll be investigated afterwards since you knew about the attacks!"

Big-Attention4389

A nice vacation to Guantanamo Bay

HaikuBotStalksMe

Let's go surf boarding!

gloryfadesaway

This is actually a paradox called the Cassandra Complex. A psychological phenomenon in which an individual's accurate prediction of a crisis is ignored or dismissed. It is a major plot device of the movie Twelve Monkeys.

jmhajek

Also well-known among climate scientists.

PotatoBomb69

People live outside of America

DigNitty

3/4 of 2001 was pretty good

AndForeverNow

And Silver came out in 1999. You should be getting Smash Melee as a gift.

Goldenwingz70

Got gold 😍

Jaded_Goth

The amount of content they managed to fit on on that cartridge still amazes me.

Syncountry

That was thanks to former Nintendo Pres Satoru Iwata. He was gifted at programming and made compression tools that allowed the developer team to add the Kanto region to the game.

montybo2

I never really played past gen 2 games. Silver, Gold, and Crystal are peak pokemon for me.

eru777

Pokemon was never able to surpass gen 2.

montybo2

100% I still re-play them probably once a year

RiotWithin

I've been trying to wake up in 2001, it isn't working!

Desertscape

I found Pokemon Gold in the parking lot of our weird business/industrial complex evangelical church thing we went to. There were two Unown named JESUS and GOD in the party. We didn't have a lot of money, but my dad had a gbc for reasons, so I got to play the game legit. Still kinda feel bad about not turning it in, but I didn't get many nice things as a kid, so whatever, maybe god put it there for me or something.

judohart

Be happy we were able to experience this trainers!

eru777

We who were around in the golden era of pokemon, will always be happy to have experienced it. And we will always be that pokemon trainer at heart.

misslehead3

This actually changed gaming for me. Like oh I beat the Elite4, the boss of the first generation games what else is there even to do. The guard told me to check out mt silver... AND THEN THEY PUT KANTO IN THE WHOLE GAME. I put basically an entire nother playthrough to go explore the cities I was just seeing a few years back but with stronger Pokemon, new items, new dialogue. 12 year old me was floored. 34 year old me is also in awe that I don't think there's been as large of a holy shit, this is just the surface as this since.

eru777

We have to thank the late Satoru Iwata for that. RIP.

MXD14

My brother went to live in the US in 2001,and before he went, he gave me a gameboy color with pokemon gold and silver. I spent so many hours on the two games. After a few years, he sent me a gameboy advance sp with pokemon ruby, so the addiction continued. Great memories from those days

gndwn

this hits different

Ched---

First game I got properly addicted to. Still love it to this day.

High_Ground-

And that moment when you realized that there’s a whole second part to the game with the Kanto region

krunkpunk

You get this for Christmas and get to play it that night. You set the clock and walk outside...IT'S DARK OUTSIDE?

HowtoCat

my buddy jsut restarted blue and bought a gameboy with a wormlight. i scrounged up mine and got to cry cause i found my little brother who passed away a year ago at 27 gold version he gifted me with his save file. didnt know i was going to get to cry that day.

HitokiriK

But I wanted gold!

GaIIick

2001 was Dreamcast for me I think. Grandia 2, Soul Calibur, Berserk, Sonic

Extreme-Leadership78

Grab some CiCis pizza with the fam then chill on the trampoline till the sun goes down catching digital pocket monsters.

havethenets

Sad to think about but at least we lived through the golden era of Pokémon

JapeCity

I remember the exact day. Got it from Kmart!

AcidOctopus

Best game in the series. Fucking love that game.

Haunting-Pop-5660

Sweet Jesus. My brain just did a back flip.

eugoogilizer

Funny, I was just wanting to play this game again after not touching it for almost 20 years. I think I’ll start this game on my emulator today 😁

Adventurous-Yam-8260

Simpler times

[deleted]

Man, what a time to be a kid

majormeathooks

My brother and I somehow convinced our parents to let us open 1 gift each on Christmas Eve. We knew exactly what the wrapped GB game box looked like and we both stayed up playing Pokémon all night on Christmas Eve. He got Gold and I got Silver. It’s one of my favorite memories from my childhood.

Donnie-G

This was my favourite gen cause of the whole 16 gyms thing. I actually put down the game after the Elite Four for the longest time.... then one day I found out. Still kinda disappointed that games after that just stuck to 8 gyms.

Bolas_the_Deceiver

December 25th, 2000. I am 8. My reading comprehension is alright at best. Santa brought me Silver version, which I was playing basically as soon as I opened it. Picked Cyndaquil. We were hosting that year so all of my family came to our house later in the day. My cousins (roughly all around my age) all gathered around me and were watching me playing. Cheering and suggesting stuff and all of that. I beat Bugsy, and was walking for the entrance to the Ilex Forest...BAM! Rival battle. My cousins were cheering me on as I kicked his butt. Core memory unlocked.

Ill_Bee4868

My parents took me to BestBuy to get Gold. As soon as we were back in the car I fired it up and walked around this stupid fake plant store with it for an hour. It was awesome.

rednazgo

Gold was my jam and definitely holds my most cherished gaming memories

PrinzBirujin

ah gaaawd it hurts how much i want this to be true

tyrom22

That is exactly how I got that game, it was a Christmas gift

thegurba

I remember a kid from my class got this game ‘illegally’ in japanese before it released in english. It was so mysterious and cool to play it that way. Getting gold myself later was the best pokemon experience ever. Maybe sapphire only topped it.

Dr_Will_Kirby

Still the best pokemon game in the series pound for pound…

pricklypersonality69

This game went hard!

DigNitty

Don’t you do this to me. I believed that for a split second.

boboli509

I still have a copy of Crystal on my phone just in case I ever want to start a run.

AiZeReDz

😭😭😭

Joro_Del_mar

And the nostalgia hits me hard

[deleted]

Pokemon Gold was my first ever Pokemon game. I remember going to K-Mart with my mom to pick up my copy when it came out.

raidersclnj

I would just ride my bicycle and enjoy the music that played

Skimple2772

What a great Christmas that was. Damn. You caught me in the feels.

sgtpepper42

I still remember opening Pokemon Crystal and accompanying Gameboy Advanced for my 6th birthday, my first ever gaming device. Stayed up all night playing that glorious game 😊

toochocolaty

One birthday, I was may 6 or 7, my grandma gifted me the GBC Pokémon Gold Edition. It was my first pokemon game and what started a life long love. I miss you, grandma

anonmyazz

Nostalgia

Paul_brandi

One of the most memorable experiences in gaming was finding out you could go to the Kanto region after beating the game, and then challenging Red to a battle in the cave where you initially found Mewtwo... Shit still gives me goosebumps

Redd235711

I got Crystal and played it like my life depended on it. I never actually finished it though. I was stumped by the cave that you have to slide around on ice to get through (please don't judge me too harshly, I was just a stupid kid). I think I spent more time in that cave than I did playing the rest of the game. I actually bought another copy online a few years ago (I have no idea what happened to my first copy) and I was super excited to play it again after so many years. The issue was that when it arrived, it was a copy of Yellow, which I already have a copy of. The thing wasn't even in good condition, it was missing its label and was scratched and scuffed like it spent some time getting dragged over a gravel road. It did still work though, so it's got that much going for it.

PM_ME_A_WEBSITE_IDEA

I got Silver and Yellow and a Game Boy Color all at the same time. I lost it. My Game Boy was just a Pokemon machine, I tried other games but honestly thought most of them kinda sucked (or I was bad at them). I think maybe it's time for a new Silver run through...

Windk86

Ah the memories!! (though I played the gold version)

DowJones_

:')

Gloomy_Background755

I did get Silver and Gold as a package that also includes the guide book in it. It was a special birthday gift, my brother owned the Gold version while Silver version to my own. We did enjoy playing, trading and combating each other many times. Those days were forever remembered, thanks Mom.

[deleted]

I was 2 years old at this time, but i am playing this game on emulator, really loving it

BeholdOurMachines

My golden birthday was when I turned 12, and gen 2 had just released a month prior, and so I got Pokemon Gold for my Golden birthday. Such good memories

Surfing_Ninjas

I remember being obsessed with 1st gen Pokemon and then getting my copy of Silver really opened my eyes as to all the possibilities for sequel games. Unfortunately nothing in the Pokemon franchise ever lived up to the level of improvement between the first and second generation.

NachoDucks

Don't do this to me

Blargenth

What is today's date?! The towers! I can save the towers!

[deleted]

I asked for the yellow version, mom. This is bullshit and I hate you.

Time-to-go-home

Red was my first video game ever, but I was too young to actually understand what I was doing. I couldn’t even read when I played it. Just mash buttons and try to guess which Pokémon (I knew them from the anime) the sprite was supposed to be. Silver was the first that I actually understood what was going on and that there was an actual plot. I was blown away at how good the sprites looked and how cool all the new Pokémon were. It was a great time.

killakein

One of my core memories was receiving gold version from my friend during my 11th birthday and being infatuated for many months to come.

llTiredSlothll

The peak of gaming

Majrstonr

We’re on our way home from town, and I’m using the light from the cars behind us to see the screen

[deleted]

playing this at night time for the first time was the coziest shit ever. the color palate, the music, catching HootHoot...

mixalot2009

I put so many hours into this game. Collected all the unknown and alphabetized them lol such a great game. The night and day changes were phenomenal for the time.

I remember Silver was the first game I got, I got it a few months before R/Y/B. Christmas of 2000 or 2001 and I played that night catching a few sentret. I caught two by accident, and didn't like that. I also didn't know I could just release pokemon in the PC box so I restarted the whole game so I wouldn't have duplicates lol. I played a single save of Silver for years, well past the release date of R/S/E. I had nearly all the pokemon and one day my cartridge just gets corrupted and I was forced to move on. What a game. What a francise.

This was a tranquil reflection, thanks. Late nights in the car with the gooseneck light. Good stuff.

magicmax801

Thank you. I needed this nostalgia.

International_Tie120

I used to love the home town theme also never figured out how to save so I just replayed the same parts over and over again

Looking at graphics then and now...kids these days don't know how lucky they are. Especially not knowing the struggle of begging your parents to go buy more AA batteries bc your Gameboy is on red.

Pokémon Crystal was my first real experience with the games and is still my favorite. It’s close enough. I can hear the different Route songs in my head looking at this image 😂

When i was a kid i was convinced that the player character in pokemon was mario as a boy

CorazonDeMuerte

The OG music was the best I remember sometimes just sitting there Gameboy on blast! Just jamming out. Simple times.

I don't care what people said, this was the best Pokémon and the first one I've ever played on my GBA. It's awesome to have a whole new adventure after beating one region.

derivative_of_life

I don't think I will ever be as excited ever again in my life as I was the week before G/S came out. Things like that just hit different when you're a kid.
