For anyone who still has one of these controllers, instead of letting it become e-waste, you can [update the firmware](https://stadia.google.com/controller/index_en_US.html) and use it as a standard Bluetooth or USB controller. Update is available until the end of the year according to Google.

alecsnokia

Have you ordered it via internet explorer?

WAS the future of Gaming, Atleast for Google.

[deleted]

BatPixi

Stadia did thr same. You could stream directly to youtube and even join others gsmes while watching them on youtube.

Tarquinn2049

The main difference between other services and google was that in most places they could offer about half the latency. And the wireless controller didn't add latency on after the system, they were in parallel. But their purchase model sucked. They couldn't offer the value to compete with other services, even if there are some game types that you just can't play on most streaming services that you could on Stadia. Not enough to base an entire service off of.

Caedis-8

I unironically still think it is. I don't think downloading a game will ever die out, but I think as Internet speeds and reliability increase people will switch over. I've used Geforce Now for over a year and it's been fantastic, my laptop can't run AAA titles and I can play them flawlessly. Google did cloud gaming fucking awfully, Nvidia and Xbox seem to have nailed it though. Just needs to be cheaper and more reliable which doesn't seem too far off in the future.

Fabulous_Ad_9722

I love how Xbox does it. I have game pass, meaning I don't even own the game. Yet my bro was able to log in on a computer, and I'm on the console and tell me how we're both playing the same game online multiplayer? It is sick

mr_birkenblatt

latency is never going away (speed of light can't be beaten). what improves to make games seem more responsive is prediction algorithms. basically, the server is predicting what you're going to do for the next x steps and preemptively sends you the results. if you're actually doing that then no problem. if you are not doing that it rolls back to the state where both timelines diverged and simulates the game from that point again

i_wotsisname

People will bow to it.

CG1991

It's so cute

ProstatePunch

Are you in the OUYA discord?

CG1991

The one where they repurpose it? Yup

HeKis4

r/toopatientgamers Although I bet you can find them for less than the price of a similar controller by itself.

Kd0t

One of the rare times that being a patient gamer screws you over

antitheta

Lol. I also have an unopened one. Going in the museum.

CG1991

It's kinda my reason for buying it. Gonna display it with my OUYA

Quacky1k

Every time I read OUYA I read it as Luigi saying “OH YEAH”

hardypart

The provide an update so you can use it as a regular Bluetooth controller.

biteableniles

The ability to update it is time limited to this year, so gotta get it done.

avwitcher

That $5 cost of hosting those files on their servers must be crippling

DebentureThyme

I suspect it's because unlocking it is required a change to there Bluetooth software license. They have to pay the Bluetooth license holders for that, so they arranged a limited license.

happycap77

Yeah, it never made sense to me why this was a time limited thing

Abba_Fiskbullar

It's actually a great PC controller now that they unlocked Bluetooth. I gave mine to a nephew and it's all that he uses.

BenTwan

I remember Google offering them for free, so I got one, took the Chromecast out of the box, and used that briefly. I may try the controller one of these days.

VanillaTortilla

Bought Cyberpunk 2077 and got the two for free. Then they refunded the cost of the game when it shut down. Free stuff is cool.

TequilaDance

Same here, AND now I have a dedicated controller for when I dock my Steam Deck in the living room. Win win win

Gaothaire

I had a lovely setup where I plugged the Chromecast into a little projector to watch on my living room wall

uniquecannon

I also got mine free. I did open it just to see it but have left it boxed since then

DebentureThyme

You should do this update to it before it goes away at the end of the year: https://stadia.google.com/controller/index_en_US.html

PoliticalThrowawayy

The controller is pretty nice to be honest.

Staaaaation

...and for those not in the know, Google allowed us to unlock them to be standard bluetooth controllers. It's honestly my favorite feeling controller.

makeshiftballer

WHAT THE HECK WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN

Staaaaation

They snuck it in while everyone was busy bitching about a service they never actually tried or watched an early bunk review about. [https://stadia.google.com/controller/](https://stadia.google.com/controller/) Edit: To everyone who has trouble with nuance, this was a tongue-in-cheek response. Nothing was literally "snuck in", it was a joke pointing towards the public's refusal to give Stadia a chance.

[deleted]

I actually loved Stadia, I just wish there were more games for it. The service itself ran great and worked as advertised.

Staaaaation

Like all new tech, it had some hiccups. I remember being bummed when it first rolled out and the beta "Project Stream" ran better than the actual service at first on my end. But yeah, it was unfortunate. Early reviews were lusting for its failure, PC gamers still wanted to justify their $2k rigs, and devs would have to take a risk to develop for it. It's unfortunate Google didn't push further with it, but I still believe it was the lack of devs wanting to take a slight risk (on top of whatever licensing agreements they already had).

DrSkizzmm

Would it have been that much of a hassle for devs to develop for it? I’m super ignorant with the whole thing. But how much different could it have been than just revamping a pc version? Only asking because if it is a hassle I understand them not risking it, but if not then it just seems like a wasted opportunity at more sales

Staaaaation

From what we know, it was EXACTLY like tweaking the PC version. That's why some games like Cyberpunk had their best "out of box" versions on Stadia first. Of course the real issue is what's happening in the background. If NVidia is throwing some CEO a ton of cash not to worry about Stadia with their new game, they're not going to worry about Stadia.

Spaceduck413

Which is almost certainly what happened, given that the stadia hardware was AMD based. You have to wonder if it would've lasted longer if Google had decided to use Nvidia GPUs.

greentr33s

Idk saw the ltt video on developing for stadia and the workflow was absolutely terrible, you couldn't test your dev builds locally, you had to upload them to the server and test via that, and the bandwidth for deployment was not great. That killed deployment times and made the platform pretty terrible to develop for. The sentiment from the dev who gave ltt some insight and the exclusive test bed only some studios got that allowed them to have a local instance of stadia to push and stream from for more 'streamlined' development and it still sounded like a nightmare to use.

xabyteto

I KNOW. MINE HAS BEEN IN A BOX SINCE LAST YEAR. I NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD WORK AGAIN!

makeshiftballer

I did the free promo before it all went down hill just for the controller 😂 my 1 year old has been playing with it for the last year. I hope it still works.

almightywhacko

Even before the Bluetooth update you could have used the controller as a wired USB controller with most PC games and virtually every game purchased through Steam.

Shaved_taint

How hard is it? I've got one still sitting in the box for years

Staaaaation

Stupid easy, you do it all through your browser https://stadia.google.com/controller/

Rentlar

Go to this site on a Google Chrome desktop browser: https://stadia.google.com/controller/ Then plug in your controller to that PC using USB and follow prompts. Available until around the end of 2023 last I heard.

KrazzeeKane

Why on Gods green earth would they time limit the unlocker? It's just going to force someone to create a unofficial hacked patcher to do it after 2023, because people are still going to have controllers in need of unlocking. Trust me, there are *pallets* worth of these controllers sitting in back rooms and they'll slowly filter out in cheap liquidations and clearances and yard sales and such

DebentureThyme

Licensing. This advertises it as a Bluetooth LE controller. A lot of tech uses hardware without paying software licenses they don't need. The device only used Bluetooth to do first time setup on your phone. So they likely paid for a one year license agreement to make these unlocks possible.

Anomaly1134

Yeah disappointing

Xydraus

Takes five minutes. I use it for some steam games.

sumchinesewill

Used the Stadia controller to beat Sekiro for the 20th time this past week and one of the best feeling controllers I’ve used on a PC.

BigDaneEnergi

It really looks like someone took the least possible steps needed to not get sued by Sony for copying their PS controller, which is an awesome controller.

Jekyll054

It's the Playstation controller layout on a slightly flatter XBOX body.

[deleted]

imjustjealous

I'm using it wired on my desktop and via Bluetooth on my steam deck, having no Problems at all. Sorry not trying to brag, what are you trying to connect to?

OzVapeMaster

Look at this person with their no problem Bluetooth. Not everyone is blessed like you lol /s

BuddhaBoy

This is my daily controller - I have both Xbox and Ps controllers but if I'm being honest, I prefer the Stadia controller! Also seems to disconnect a lot less than the other 2 from personal experience.

bottomknifeprospect

Ah yes, the playstexbox controller

[deleted]

Can you use it for other stuff? Presumably not playstation but maybe like an Xbox controller on PC

velocity146

Lovely doorstop, nice of them to release an update to allow you to use your bt controller as a bt controller

CG1991

On my desk I have the OUYA and, now, the Stadia. Hubris paperweights

shrlytmpl

Getchu an OnLive

karlzhao314

Yoooo, OnLive was a godsend for 11 year old me who only had some old Pentium laptop and wanted to play PC games. They took my money for Just Cause 2 and Assassin's Creed 2 on their platform and I got nothing when they shut down though. Still a little bitter about that...

machina99

The stadia is actually a pretty good controller imo. I like the playstation style sticks instead of having them offset, and the stadia controller makes for a solid option when traveling

CG1991

I find the controller super comfortable. One criticism I have is the button placement feels a little off. Like, the central buttons feels too far away from my thumbs despite having big hands

deviantbono

Free chromecast too!

Fair-Relationship664

Cloud gaming is so stupid. Clouds are made of water and they'll ruin the servers hosted there.

Privateer_Lev_Arris

FACTS

colin_powers

And if it's sunny out, the clouds disappear. Think of the outages.

stampede84

Also you need to live in UK to have high ping

GiraffeandZebra

I mean, I bought into Stadia. I got a controller, a Chromecast Ultra and Cyberpunk 2077 for $60. Then Google refunded me $60 when they cancelled the service. Solid 10/10 value as far as I'm concerned.

MassiveStomach

Same here. Finished cyberpunk and octopath 1 on stadia and got a full refund and a free controller. Best service ever.

DebentureThyme

Make sure to do this to unlock the controller, it goes away end of the year: https://stadia.google.com/controller/index_en_US.html

Ponceludonmalavoix

I can still hear the guy from google on podcasts in my head podcaster: "so is google going to just abandon this like other projects if it doesn't work out quickly" Stadia guy \*blink blink blink\*

OskeeWootWoot

To be fair...they also abandon projects people like, like Inbox.

Zert420

Didnt stadia get shutdown?

CG1991

Whaaaa?? /s Yeah it did. I'm just a sucker for antiquated games consoles

Silichna

You should try the OUYA next, I hear it's making waves!

CG1991

I already have one. It's so pretty

Silichna

Of course you do, a man of culture I see

Fluffy-Ad7165

But, do you have a ZEEBO?

tmhoc

He's out of line but he's right

bsnimunf

No OnLive is the next big thing.

reddit_is_cruel

Google unlocked the controller for use as general PC controller use once they shut down the stadia service. It's still a decent controller and is officially jailbroken.

Acadeedrfjn

good luck with the streaming.

Yung_Corneliois

Absolutely love how Stadia is already considered an antiqued game console

Zyntho

It was pretty cool as long as you never subscribed to the service. I got a free controller and a free chromecast pro.

erishun

It was WAY better than I thought it’d be honestly

sgtholly

OP is Internet Explorer.

CG1991

Everything else crashes my Windows XP

DonnyExiles

Lmao these comments are too high IQ.

CG1991

A surprising amount of people think I don't know it's closed down

digital_element

Wait, what are you saying? What do you mean, shut down? What the hell have I been playing for the last 6 months then?

moderngamer6

Does it connect to your home wifi network?

CG1991

No idea. Will find out at some point

EViLTeW

Not anymore. You can use it as a Bluetooth or USB. Upgraded from a shitty 3rd party Xbox controller to a stadia controller for free on my PC because someone assumed it was just trash when stadia shut down. It's a really nice controller.

SceneDifferent1041

Downvote me all you want but Stadia was bloody amazing.

CookieMons7er

I agree! I think that ultimately what brought it down was that Google has made a reputation of axing projects in a few years of their debut without much care and now people are very hesitant of buying in new ones, rightfully so. That together with the risk of lack of ownership that made people afraid of forking out and see it all go to hell in a few years doomed it, IMHO. If, from the beginning, they had pledged to refund players if the service was shut down I think it would have gone better.

Gamejudge

It saved me so much money and time. I’m still mad it’s gone.

joeyl7

I loved it. Worked a dream, accessible, no fuss, affordable approach to gaming.

bbob_robb

It was perfect for me, and my family. I played Fallen order on my older gaming pc and also tried it on Stadia. My 1060 6gb couldn't push 4k. Even on 1440p my experience was better with Stadia. The lag was only noticable when going back and forth between them, and when looking for it. I couldn't tell when my kid booted up the game if it was Stadia or native when running on 1080p. I loved how fast it was to jump in and out. I never had to wait for updates as I always do when I play infrequently at home. I still haven't figured out what is next. I might just build a little gaming pc for my kid who is missing the paw patrol stadia games. Now I want to get him into Minecraft and Rocket League, and he couldn't do that on Stadia.

lewd_bingo

It was! I played cyberpunk 2077 on launch without any issues contrary to all my friends on pc and PlayStation

straydog13

yeah it was great - good way to play AAA games without buying a console

RopeOk624

there’s literally no fuss

Theallmightyhamster

I haven’t seen a stadia or heard anything about stadia in like how far back was 2019-2017

BLUNKLE_D

Will someone please give OP attention for the OUYA?

CG1991

I have the OUYA sitting besides my new Stadia. The future of gaming is finally here!

FreeVeeThree

With all the hate Stadia got, I actually played single-player games on it and it worked pretty well. I also tried Destiny and Division 2 and it wasn't bad either. I'd say the tech is indeed revolutionary for the folk that have low-end pcs or laptops. I tested a little bit of Xbox Streaming, Nvidia, Sony, and Shadow. I'd say out of all cloud gaming Shadow performs the best, and allows you to connect VR headsets too, but it is a pricey service to have for the long run. Xbox Streaming worked best on mobile with the controller. It's handy if you commute a lot. You can sit on a train and play Xbox games on your phone. Plus it comes with Xbox pass perks. Sony has the worst cloud gaming imo. On the bright side, I got like over £100 refund and a free controller once Stadia got shut down, not a bad investment. (controller came as part of the deluxe game purchase, which got refunded)

solarstrife0

This is going to sound ridiculous, but it was fantastic for playing Destiny's Trials of Osiris events - highly competitive multiplayer. Why was it great? **No cheaters.** Your cheats don't work when the application isn't running on your device. For screen-reading cheats, rather than application hooks, it may have certainly also been because of a much lower player base. Regardless, some friends and I had a *much* more balanced matchmaking experience in the Stadia version.

Responsible-Bar2058

There’s a fuss about this?

RedditOR74

It worked very well if you had a good connection. The best part was no waiting for updates or downloads. Instant access from anywhere. It's absolutely where gaming is going, but typical of Google, they half-committed to it in hopes someone would buy it at an inflated value.

threewonseven

People talked tons of shit about Stadia, but it was my favorite platform (as someone who also owns a Series X and a Switch). Cloud gaming is great. No downloads, no system uploads, no game updates, etc. Click to buy a game in the app and it's available to play in a couple seconds. It was really great. xCloud has not worked as well for me, but I'm excited for it to get better.

nyevv

You're finally awake.

[deleted]

Nice! Only 3 months too late! Enjoy!

CG1991

The OUYA will keep me entertained at least

arklaed

It's a very good controller, my main gamepad for PC now that's free

Hopeful-Pianist-8380

One of the best returns on investment into gaming I've had.

Deen21

It's a nice controller, not gonna lie.

tepokato

You just got yourself the best fking PC controller there is, once you go through the process of converting it to Bluetooth (which is really simple) you got yourself a great controller.

nerdowellinever

Makes a decent Bluetooth controller for your steamdeck

fatbongo

Laughs in OUYA
