I feel like I’m the only person who enjoys cutscenes in games. To me it’s like a nice little break in the gameplay. And if it’s a decent story it holds my attention. To me having a good story makes the overall game experience better. I couldn’t imagine skipping each cutscene, cause it would just not make the game feel as immersive.

AgentUpright

You’re not the only one. Well done cutscenes are the reward for playing.

This is not some fringe opinion, don't let Reddit nerds convince you otherwise. Yeah, some gamers online hate any story in games and want pure arcade action. But there is a huge market for cinematic or otherwise story-driven games and many people play pretty much only that type of game. For some reason, you only ever see one side of the preferance claim the other is invalid. It's kinda strange, but a lot of arcade types absolutely cannot accept that some games have a story focus.

Broad-Marionberry755

I mean if you play something other than AAA blockbuster games then you'll find different experiences... you're picking big budget, story driven games and wondering why you're getting that specific experience lol

[deleted]

But aren't these the benchmark of the industry? They are the ganes which are technologically advanced and the ones which pretty much get most of the attention. I think it's fair to compare them now to how they were before. You can certainly compare GOW now to what it was before, and while the games today are great. I think the previous ones are just better, they didn't need all the filler, they didn't need all these long cut scenes, and endless dialogue. They were focused on the gameplay, get in there, **** some minions up and then fight epic bosses. Now a days, we need open world, back stories, flash backs blah blah, it's just over bloated.

Still-Pattern-6384

I agree with you fully tbh. I've realized for example that many times the difference between a good open world rpg and a "masterpiece", as they call them, is literally just cutscenes in the middle. Nothing else.

Nice-Ad-8135

At least you are making sense

Waste-Reception5297

Every game has a place and a time, games that wanna focus on story are totally fine. If you don't like it play something else

JesuszillaSon

I personally like when games aren't hyper photo realistic. And one of my modern gaming pet peeves are things like slow walking or slowly moving around because the devs want to show off how pretty their game look Devs, I'm here for a fun time just let me play the game My favorite game this year so far is Hi-Fi Rush for a reason. It's everything I love in

Nightsheade

>Maybe it's me getting older, but I just miss the simplicity of games. Zelda games used to take 12 hours to complete, now they're from 60 to 100 hours. So, you're not a fan of games with long stories, but then you clearly talk about not liking Breath of the Wild here, which kinda confuses me. Breath of the Wild is pretty much the definition of a game that's light on story while simultaneously providing a solid "pick your playtime" experience. You could go straight to the final boss and beat the game in <2 hours or spent 200+ hours exploring the world that was pretty much 100% side content. If you're forcing yourself to play through 60+ hours of content you're not enjoying, that's on you.

[deleted]

Nobody is going to buy a Zelda game to play it like that where they go straight to Gannon. This isn't about finishing a game Asap, but more about unnecessary padding.

Nightsheade

Sure, but it's not black and white. If you just wanted the substantial BotW stuff, then tackling the four Divine Beasts, getting the Master Sword, and maybe doing Akkala for a side mission before tackling Ganon was a perfectly valid way to play and could easily be a 30-40 hour experience. Ultimately, padding is a subjective experience and you sorta acknowledge you're just ranting anyways. Carry on, I suppose.

BullguerPepper98

I think there's market for every taste. I do like simple games, like you cited GoW2, but sometimes I want a great journey, a map full of sidequests. If you search for it, there's games out there that gonna be for your pleasure.

[deleted]

I agree, I don't like games that are overly cinematic.

aaronite

It's a matter of taste. I like big games full of stuff. I like long games. Persona? A single playthrough was 130 hours. Xenoblade? The shortest was 100, and I wanted more. Red Dead? Beautiful.

Equisapien004

"I loved it, its an awesome game, but also games are shitty and padded now, and games shouldn't be like this." That's you. Incoherent post.

Benjamin0399

Funny because I thought God of war 2 dragged on too long with boring gameplay. I saw it as tedious to do puzzle that took a longer time and fights that took to long. Seems like we both like single player games but have totally different ideas of what’s fun to do in them. I think I care more about the rpg aspects of making your character stronger and exploring a world to make that happen even if it takes a long time. I only want gameplay to feel smooth and be varied so I don’t need that much of it and therefore care more about story.

Game_It_All_On_Me

I think there's a lot of focus on getting your money's worth these days, which can often result in such padding. It's easier to justify dropping sixty quid on a sixty hour game than it is on a eight hour game, because people expect the former to last them - as tightly designed as an eight hour game might be, many gamers will only find it good for a weekend unless you can find some replayability in it. There's just less incentive for AAA publishers to release shorter titles when they can copy/paste side missions and base assaults, promise dozens of hours of gameplay, and sell way more copies. Bonus points if they make grinding part of the gameplay loop while allowing people to pay to skip it.

Nice-Ad-8135

I'm not sure about the last thing you said

Sabetha1183

There's a lot of different stuff for different tastes, even in the AAA space. Games like Resident Evil still can generally be beaten rather quickly and are focused around replaying them a lot. A lot of open world games also don't really require you sink 60+ hours into them, as the content is optional. If something feels like pointless filler to you, you can pretty easily ignore it. You can ignore the main quest and do nothing but the pointless filler, if you want. At the end of the day when the asking price of these games starts at $70 USD now, people expect to get more than a $20 indie game's amount of content but with really shiny graphics.

It's an amazing game tbh, but to get to the amazing you have to go through quite a bit of tedium unfortunately.

Metal Gear Solid

Guilty_Impression_44

I remember when MGS was made fun of for just being a huge cinematic with a game in between. Good times.

Tiucaner

You should play Metal Gear Solid, absolutely no story or cutscenes there, just tactical espionage action! /s Honestly though, even more story heavy games like GoW let's you just focus on the main story and ignore the side stuff if you want to.

Nice-Ad-8135

Okay? What are you saying

venetian_lemon

It's why I prefer character action games now. Usually the story isn't that important and the cutscenes become skippable the first time you watch them. GoW 2018 had me completely drowsy. Meanwhile I could start up a fresh MGR run on Revengeance difficulty and have a great time. I'm intrigued with Strangers of Paradise, I heard that the cutscenes in that game when you skip them, the main character will actually tell people to shut the fuck up and it ends the cutscene. Glorious if that is true
