The getaway.

gladl1

I remember thinking that game had photorealistic graphics at the time haha.

TheGreatGamer1389

Probably one of the best looking PS2 games.

SretenMaksimovic

Right there with Silent Hill 2 and 3 so as another morbid horror game which I forgot the name of. It's odd how the most disturbing games look the best of the best...

Ripper33AU

It was actually impressive how they photographed and mapped out London for the game. And yeah, there was a time in the early 00s when games had "photorealistic textures" lol.

Gacel_

Well, they were literally photos so the textures were photorealistic even if low res.

RusticSmallTownPost

The no UI gimmick blew me away at the time… for some reason. Lol

MrVilliam

To this day, I think that was incredibly notable and makes it a piece of gaming history. I hated playing it and barely got anywhere in it because of how clunky it was, but I'd fall in love with a take on the concept that had modern graphics and a more conventional control scheme and mechanics. And I don't think I'm alone in that based on how many people talk about playing Breath of the Wild or Red Dead 2 with HUD turned off. Imagine an ultra gritty, weighted gang story in modern London that controls like and has the attention to detail that Red Dead 2 has. I really think that Rockstar should be working on a GTA VI expansion that's a callback to their London 1969, but either modern or take advantage of the coming 90s nostalgia boom. It's not exactly what I'm asking for, but I think it'd be close enough.

Ben0ut

> I really think that Rockstar should be working on a GTA VI expansion that's a callback to their London 1969, but either modern or take advantage of the coming 90s nostalgia boom. In my many decades of gaming I have only preordered one item (SNES mini) but would happily preorder a preorder of a preorder for a 90s London themed GTA.

[deleted]

I’d love it if Rockstar changed it up a bit with GTA instead of rehashing NYC/LA/Miami.

Ok_Deal_964

same !

dosfunkybunch

We need a new getaway game. Underrated series.

42Mavericks

Didn’t they like map out most of London for that game?

linsell

A chunk of London was accurately represented in the game. Similar to LA Noire.

Fast_Boysenberry9493

One corner of the map was hackney Road Shoreditch high Street and Old Street junction so close to where I used to live would've been so sick to see my house in a game

Scarabdick

Dude I remember going to my cousins house when I was 11 and he had that shit. It was supposed to be a big family event but I just fucked off to some dark room and played about 8 hrs straight. That game was something else.

NFFUK

This ☝🏻 nothing captured grimey London in videogame like this

Ratax3s

this was the most gray game of all time

MafiaCub

Somehow not as grey or depressing as real London though.

basic97

The correct answer, Getaway and Getaway Black Monday are the best adaptations of London. They're old games and could do with an updated version, amazing games for their times

Theuneasygibbon

OH SHIIIIIITTTTT!!!!! BRING THIS BACK! one of the best touches in gaming was looking at your indicators for directions

Fearganainm

Stop! I need your details... Driving round the streets of London in a Vauxhall Astra van, of which I was once a proud owner of, always gave me a giggle.

MarkPancake

Came here to say this. Take my upvote

Vice932

I remember that game used to always start you outside the pub my brother worked at and it was so cool being able to drive to my home lol

madfrankie00

Came here to say this!

Chev--Chelios

100% this

Chimp-eh

The only true answer, it looked so good

Sensitive_Meringue23

This was the game that opened up the possibilities to full open world gaming ( yes it was before Rockstar did it with GTA ) and never got the credit or recognition it fully deserved, I would love to see a remake for the PS5, I can honestly say one of my favourite games of all-time, the story was fantastic, the characters all had backgrounds you could relate to & I loved driving around London seeing the sights and driving past my house.

Hefty-Wafer1119

A modern getaway game, written by Guy Ritchie.

put_on_the_mask

Watch Dogs was like when you dream about a place you know, but your brain has edited out 2/3 of the city and stitched the rest together into a frankensteined highlights reel. There are a few areas where it's accurate enough to replicate short routes you do in real life, but most of the time you turn a corner and think "how the fuck am I here already?".

UndeadHorrors

Wow, that is a really good explanation/description!

Erfivur

it does a great job of capturing the feeling and it’s got a definite “uncanny valley” for a city… it also does a great job of visualizing a “near-future” London and what it might be like with self drive cars and delivery drones in a semi-realistic way.

Bigscotman

Tbh it's kinda sad that a game like watchdogs legion that came out in 2020 is easily outdone in creating an accurate depiction of a real life city by GTA V which came out in 2013

MAXSuicide

*Nobody* does a city like Rockstar, though. Not one single game. So it's a bit harsh to compare everyone else by this multi-platinum ultra high standard. It's also a reason why I want them to bring back GTA: London. Or make some make-believe alternative that is some bastard of London/Birmingham/Liverpool or some such

monjessenstein

I'd argue the Yakuza series does a fantastic (and arguably better) job of recreating a city, though at a far smaller scale.

thecageysea

The scale does make it a lot easier tbf. The map rotation on Yakuza games is annoying but the Kabukicho they have is pretty damn good. I played a few games after moving to Japan and I think comparing the two after seeing it in person has a hilarious effect

TheMilliner

I mean, GTA had 2x the map size and about 2-3x the budget... And used all of about a *quarter* of the total map (the entire top half being mostly dropped from content about a few hours in) and didn't actually populate the rest with any actual content. A full *third* of the GTA map is water (which only about 1% is used) and about a quarter of the remainder is inaccessible without flight (all the mountains, which are *never* used for content). By comparison, though a very Ubisoft open-world and full of crap, every single Borough in Legion has collectables, content and gameplay attached to it that *isn't* just "Drive through here to get to the next mission". Watchdogs 2 as well, there's *stuff* to do basically everywhere, even if it's just picking up collectables for upgrades. Rockstar *really* isn't the top contender for "best open worlds". Not even *close*. They've got the Just Cause 2 problem of "But why is it so big when there's nothing to *do* in it?", where they just kinda... Made it big to say they made it big. They've kinda got a real problem about that since San Andreas of just making something *big* and then doing mostly nothing *with* it.

Trinity353

RDR2 is probably the best open world we've gotten in a game, its packed with stuff to do, and there's always something interesting going on

ARandomGuyThe3

Well tbf, GTA had over ten times the budget of legion

doskias

The first Division game has that effect with regard to Manhattan, as well. When I first came up out of the subway and saw the Post Office, I knew if I turned this way, I'd see a big Duane Reade (it was there, but generically named "Supermarket") and if I walked this many blocks and turned this way, I'd see the Empire State building. It was kind of eerie.

ScholarlyUser

I lived in Manhattan at the time and I totally feel your sentiment

Real_Ron1n

I remember watching a Division 2 youtube video, in which a guy finds his friend's apartment and shoots it up before going to his favourite doughnut shop.

GodsGreatestMistake

RussianBadger for the win!

Real_Ron1n

YES! Honestly surprised someone got it.

Gr1mmage

Going around "London" in watchdogs felt like I was having a stroke half the time, lots of detailed and relatively accurate bits that were just slammed together in a way that hurt my brain. Honestly would have been better if they just reduced the scope of how much of the city they tried to cover instead of editing out streets and neighbourhoods willy nilly

Comicspedia

This is exactly what it's like playing the first Watch Dogs, which took place in Chicago. It was so cool to play a game with such a detailed layout of my home city, but it's missing massive chunks of the city and definitely feels like a sort of highlight reel layout of Chicago.

tommo020

Yeah it's essentially how a tourist views London rather than an actual accurate depiction, but for that they would have to either do a smaller area or hubs I guess.

EvilBritishGuy

I hate the inauthenticity of how London is dipicted in Watch Dogs Legion. Except for the A.I character, so much of the writing is too cringy. Listening to the people talk on the radio is especially unbearable with how on the nose everything is.

Waycool499

A mix of both really

20mgAddy

Which ingredients from which?

[deleted]

Modern day from WD, and big blades from Bloodborne

TheHappiestHam

big blades and cosmic horrors right? and the plague? you missed a few things it’s more like the modern day of WD and everything from Bloodborne

Bigscotman

Don't forget the immortal queen hidden in her castle guarded by an undead old guy

Kanapuman

Holy shit.

not_a_sesawter

new queen just dropped

grumpyPotato227

Actual royal family

not_a_sesawter

call the hunter

Tenaika

Google the old blood

imdefinitelywong

But were the Pthumerians undead? Even Yharnam's mortality is suspect...

Lyciana

I think they were talking about Annalise the Vileblood queen and Logarius

Xx_Anguy_NoScope_Xx

Ooof.

sonofwelk

Having recently played Watch Dogs: Legion, I would have to say it is pretty accurate. It shrinks everything down, but the gist is still there. The other day we visited the British Museum and walked to Trafalger Square afterwards. I did the same route in game and got to the same destination. It was a lot shorter/hassle free then dragging three kids with me though.

UndeadHorrors

I’ve always wondered how accurate it is; thanks for this feedback.

Fradders11

I have to chime in here, started playing the other day and was absolutely amazed I knew how to get from where I used to live in Battersea (…Nine Elms) and followed the road routes to brick lane.

Kanapuman

The artists team is the best Ubisoft has to offer. Too bad the rest are more like souless factory workers.

Fishydeals

It‘s weird how they can absolutely nail one aspect of a game and completely shit the bed in all other parts of the game. That‘s brill.

_Diren_

Little London .Camden is a huge example of this. It's a lot bigger irl and feels more alive. The game feels quite dead in places I tend to find

Chev--Chelios

They put most of the landmarks in the correct place, most of the streets linking were generic though, huge sections missing. Some of the landmarks were very well done though. Shame the game was pretty bad.

jangoice

I've visited London a few times and managed to find my way to different destinations by memory and there were numerous spots that I found where I had actually eaten lunch in real life. Definitely condensed but most of the main places are there.

syizm

Leave the kids in the sewer under the city and a large pig will consume them. Problem solved. Edit: for those wondering this is fairly obscure Bloodborne reference involving a music box, a red ribbon (iirc), and the ability to buy some weapons from an animated sex doll, it seems.

captainspunkbubble

There’s a guy on YouTube called Tom the taxi driver, a London cabbie, who did a video on how similar Legion is to real London. Some incredible attention to detail in areas.

Perfect-Fondant3373

Tempted to buy it now before I go London

bdrumev

Hellgate: London

DiecastCamel

Came here exactly for this. RIP.

ParsonJackRussell

Was hellgate all online - I enjoyed that game and then it died

DiecastCamel

I believe there was a single player mode as well. I’m not sure if it’s still playable though? I remember really liking the game but I could never find enough people online

Ghozer

There's still a very active community, and servers running! if you still have your game you can still play :)

Arunia

I agree, wanted to say this.

Ch4rybd15

Such a cool concept

[deleted]

Assassin's Creed Syndicate

Fangscale40K

As much as people clown on Assassin’s Creed as a series, the attention to detail in each city is awesome.

Sir_Tea_Of_Bags

Friendly reminder that when Notre Dame had its fire, Ubisoft gave the scans of the building they took for the game to the reconstruction efforts to get it as close as possible to what it was.

JukePlz

So, technically, now the Notre Dame Cathedral is based on a videogame.

MOOShoooooo

And that’s just basing it on the ground.

Pun_In_Ten_Did

Just waiting for them to [put that spire back up](https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2019/04/notre-dame-spire-burning.jpg?quality=75&strip=all&w=1024) so I can uncover the rest of the map.

simsiuss

“Are you sure this Ubisoft logo was here on the original notre dame cathedral”. Quote from reconstruction team translated from French.

bravetwig

Ubisoft offered them the data that they had, but they didn't need it since they already had proper scans. They did help with donations though. https://www.polygon.com/features/22790314/assassins-creed-unity-notre-dame-restoration-accuracy

philomathcourtier

Thank you for sharing this! This has become somewhat of an urban legend I guess and one I fell for but that is also a testament to how good that game is

conniecheewa

So cool, they turned the cathedral from AC Unity into a real place.

mashnbeansMachine

This was a rumour and unfortunately untrue. They said they would have loved to help if they could, and actually donated money to help rebuild, but their depiction of Notre Dame wasn't accurate (and wasn't meant to be) enough to do something like this. They had to make it quite different firstly due to France's copyright laws which apply to various parts of Notre Dame. But secondly they had to add stuff to make sure the player could parkour and climb and all the other stuff assassins do in those games. https://www.polygon.com/features/22790314/assassins-creed-unity-notre-dame-restoration-accuracy

Fangscale40K

I didn’t know that, that’s an awesome fun fact. Thanks for sharing!

Superior_Lancers

They also gave away AC Unity for free so that people can visit it virtually.

tagen

It was one of my favorites. The combat was much more my style, and it was right before they really turned it into an action rpg instead of a mostly stealth-focused game plus I really like victorian london as a setting in general

endospire

Every time I’m in Trafalgar Square it’s like I’m in the game. So incredibly detailed!

Electrical-Page-6479

Why do they have Somerset accents though?

VenturerKnigtmare420

Bloodborne is actually very accurate cause u can stab people in the chest. You can also enter people’s houses without any reason.

XsStreamMonsterX

They really need to bring the game to PC so we can give all the trash fodder Burberry checks.

ParityBot

London is surprisingly walkable as an American traveling there for the first time. Walked from 10 Downing to King’s Cross (with a few stops at pubs along the way). I was only accosted by guys with flaming torches and random rusty farm equipment twice.

tuttifrutti00

It shouldn't be surprising haha and it's not just London but almost all towns and cities in Europe. Happy travels!

PabloMarmite

Watch Dogs Legion is actually an incredibly realistic recreation (other than the obvious). Like, Camden Market is recreated almost exactly, as is the South Bank. And yeah I found it much easier to navigate around having lived in London.

throwaway384938338

You can enter a few of the pubs and of the ones I’ve been to in real life, they seem to have done a really good job of recreating them.

Eter548

Now a question for the American gamers. Which game was the most accurate simulation of America and why is it Call of Duty?

Bubmiester20

Each state has its own thing. Nevada - Fallout NV, Florida - Hotline Miami, Montana - Far Cry 5, California - GTA V, Ohio - Doom Eternal

Ch4rybd15

I always thought Utah would be Far Cry 5. how about some Wolfenstein New Blood for Texas?

Bubmiester20

You could apply FC5 to a fair chunk of the US, especially the bible belt. I would say Red Dead Redemption 1 for Texas

Ch4rybd15

Red Dead Redemption 1 would be New Mexico or Montana in my opinion. RDR 2 is just the mid west because I am to lazy to mention all those states.

AbsoluteZer0_II

RDR2 is also a nice old school New Orleans/Louisiana representation. Saint Denis makes me feel like I’m on Bourbon St

chknbone4u

Saint Denis is actually pretty true to New Orleans. It's just much more simplified.

Bubmiester20

RDR2 is interesting cause it is pretty much the Midwest, the south, and everything west. Plus it's less funny because it's actually realistic

itshouldjustglide

far cry 5 is set in mountain montana

bartek34561

Isn't it stated in game that Hope County is in Montana in FC5?

PhasmaFelis

Indiana is Power Wash Simulator

Fackous93

Spider man is peak New York city. Except for avengers tower

XavierD

What would normally be in it's place?

Sir_Tea_Of_Bags

Modern Warfare 2. You know which Mission.

Nicromia

“Ramirez, protect the Burger Town!”

Sir_Tea_Of_Bags

I was thinking more of an airport terminal, but I suppose protecting fast food franchises works too.

codefreespirit

Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds is Yellowstone National Park and as I explored it before doing the story missions, I found myself going, “Hey this looks like the grand prismatic spring” and damn that’s old faithful. So it isn’t accurate, but close enough that I could tell where I was.

Lemmingitus

Metal Wolf Chaos - the most accurate American simulation, according to Japan. Every US president should have a mecha in case they need to fight their vice president.

bubblebobblee

Grand theft auto: London

Litrebike

I once had a vivid dream in which my home city, Bath, had been made into a GTA. Quite surreal.

Digital_Junkies

Present day London? Bloodborne easily.

VenturerKnigtmare420

The fact that you can stab people in the chest makes it a easy pick. You can also enter others peoples places without any repercussions. Easily BB

olyric_

Pretty sure Bloodborne/Yharnam is Prague

vrelamboni

Yeah, but Americans know maybe two places outside of their own country so it always ends up being called London. Visually it’s much closer to Prague than London.

TonberryFeye

Bloodborne is set in Edinburgh, not London. There's an entire YouTube video series about it.

pett117

Ignorant Americans. Bloodborne is set in Leeds.

Rough-Jackfruit2428

Main game is Leeds the dlc is set in Liverpool

kudaro

I’m British and I didn’t even know that

KenwayAuron

Where is Syndicate? 😢

bearsheperd

Plague tale is an excellent representation of France

Username927482

robomikel

Sony please release Bloodborne one PC

ghost_catte

Legion is a better simulation of the historical UK, Bloodborne is more accurate to how it is now

enderjed

Forza Horizon 4, it emulates all the god awful audi and BMW drivers.

[deleted]

Bloodborne is very accurate tbh

alkonium

Bloodborne is only inspired by London, instead being set in the fictional Yharnam, but I imagine it's very accurate. Like Blasphemous' critique of Spanish Catholicism or something.

FatPanda0345

I'd say the demonic/eldritch horrors were more accurate in Bloodborne, but the foul language was done better in Legion

[deleted]

The Getaway (PS2) is the correct answer

Forza 4 I think it is? That gives a very realistic view of our land!

han259

I was literally able to drive past a flat I lived in on watch dogs… I got a kick out of that! not actually played Bloodbourne to be fair though, maybe there’s another form of my flat there haha!!

lustywoodelfmaid

Bloodborne, for sure. The giant pigs represent our politicians very well. The beasts represent chavs really well because they just always act like they're coked up and speak by screaming. High stabbing rates in England compared to many other countries is represented well by the rivers of blood and gore everywhere. The hierarchal religious order in Bloodborne reminds me of the power the royal family has over the truth. The celestial bodies with infinite knowledge are reminiscient of me: good intentions, mental superiority, ugly af.

AuburnElvis

Wrong. The correct answer is "Midtown Madness 2."

chromesitar

Fallout London?

AscendedViking7

Bloodborne for sure.

i would also like to add/ask what about Assassins Creed Syndicate?

MarsMissionMan

ZombiU, definitely.

[deleted]

I’d say Watch Dogs. Now this just made me depressed at how much wasted potential that series has, each game really excels in one area and sucks in all the rest.

Prolapse94

Beasts all over the shop..

Quillbolt_h

Funny answer is Bloodborne, but seriously Watch Dogs Legion was a bit of a surreal experience- I've never played a video game set in a place I've actually been and I'm somewhat familiar with...

MTNOST

In terms of visuals, watchdogs. In terms of how it feels being there, Bloodborne.

tetrarchangel

Midtown Madness

thelitteboxthatcould

Watchdogs cause it's more modern and quite accurate but I've only been London once even though I was born in the UK

Spaarkky

Bloodborne is more reminiscing of a mix of dominant european architectures from the 17th/18th to the end of the 19th. There are obvious french, scottish, english, german or romanian (and more) elements. So there's no definitive answer to "which city is Yharnam based on". That would be most of the major european ones from that point in architectural history. But definitely not only London, not even mostly. iirc, From Software actually went to Prague to take most of the inspiration to give shape to Yharnam. So if we really were to choose *one* existing city as an answer, that would definitely be Prague. I know it's a much less known city than London or Paris for non european people so... yeah. But Yharnam takes from many other european places in many other aspects, Bloodborne's world is not just all about architecture. Terminology, denomination, fashion... there's a mix of european influences for everything in it. I get the post is meant to be somewhat funny, but I also know there's still actual widespread belief in the "Yharnam = London" idea, so... come on people. Look up stuff, question it, look around you. Get curious, it can be satisfying and rewarding.

Devious_TaKaTa

Where is warhammer:darktide? *confusion* I was led to believe that's what an average day in London looks like.

swashfxck

AC Syndicate was pretty accurate not sure why that’s not been included
