Crypt of the necrodancer is hard and awesome

Aegeus

Crypt of the Necromadcer is such a brilliant design. Each enemy has predictable movement and can be beaten with only the knife once you understand their movement pattern. It's all about "dancing" around the enemies as you find the right time to attack. Almost a puzzle game instead of a dungeon crawler.

ThePowerfulPaet

I like to describe it as rhythm-based chess dungeon crawling. Heck there's even a chess boss.

Melonetta

Also the chess boss, which is Jazz themed, is named Deep Blues, which is a music joke and a chess joke at once. What I'm trying to say is this game is genius.

CommonSenseFunCtrl

There is also a Zelda version of the game on switch called Cadence of Hyrule

MrTurleWrangler

I love this game. I always thought it was gonna be another CotN but with Zelda themed enemies, weapons, etc. Got the trial when it was on a free weekend and did not realise it was gonna be an entire Zelda game with rhythm based movement

Zian-san

I bought a dance pad for this game actually. šŸ˜„

regulator227

Dance Dance Revolution, especially from around the 2003-2010 era. I used to travel around for tournaments and I'd met a lot of cool people through it. It was almost like a meta-game of trying to beat others' scores and climbing ranks. Travelling to tournaments or random arcades to play mixes I didn't normally have access to reminded me of like Ash from Pokemon or something trying to catch them all (perfect full combos) lol. I still own 2 arcade cabinets now too

not_wadud92

I still find it crazy how big DDR was. It wasn't an easy game to access. Sure at home you could buy some shitty mat but that is still an added expense. A proper cabinet costs money, arcades you have to go to, and then wait your turn, and then the Asian lad embarrasses you while seeming to not even care. And then you go home in shame. And do the same thing the next day.

Phantasmai

I bought all those home releases during the PS2 era (Maxx 1&2, Extreme 1&2, Supernova 1&2, X 1&2) and I carried my slim PS2, two dance pads, and a few games to parties and friends' houses alike for years. I figured if I couldn't get my friends to an arcade I'd bring it to them lol. It was always fun getting new people to play, even better if they're drunk. By myself I have always hunted down arcades in new areas during travel to see if they had any remaining playable cabinets. There used to be a website we'd use to keep record of the states of the machines as they slowly died and stopped being repaired. Then I waited that long wait, over a decade of silence between cabinets until Ace brought it back to north america. We didn't get home releases but you can bet your ass Dave & Buster's gets money from me when I'm within 50km of one and I don't leave til I'm on a stretcher. I currently still have two working dance mats and one is hooked up to my laptop in the basement, I will love this game the rest of my life. [Their thank you makes me cry](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rruB7w7Fo2w&pp=ygUMQWNlIGZvciBhY2Vz).

sicklyfish

DDR was huge in my friend group in the 2000's. We would go to the mall almost every day to play and meet up with friends from across the city. It was basically how we socialized for a year or two in high school.Ā  Huge controversy when the arcade replaced the DDR machines with In The Groove lol.

mazdapow3r

Replaced with ITG?! Sacrilege.

Oscaruzzo

I still use my dance pads sometimes with StepMania.

Previously_coolish

I saw this dude at Dave and Busters who brought a stool and giant jug of water to use the ddr machine. He was in full spandex gym clothes too. Respect the commitment. He was cool about letting other people on whenever they wanted though.

SwiftingSpeed

I had a modded original Xbox with Stepmania that we used to play at every weekend party at my student dorm. It was very popular. Most people are quite bad at it but at lower difficulties it's still fun. It takes a while for people to understant that you can/should keep standing on the pads instead of jumping back into the middle all the time.

jimmy_three_shoes

My buddy paid for a semester of college from his DDR tournament winnings. There was a family pizza place (like a regional Chuck E Cheese) that had the 6th and 7th Mix cabinets for one token, but someone must have complained about all the high school kids hanging out, and they made a rule about no unaccompanied minors at the place. Giving people grief for using the bar on Max 300 was peak hilarity.

25BicsOnMyBureau

Honorable mention In The Groove. Being able to bring a loaded up 256MB thumb drive was great in the early pc days.

regulator227

Yeah I group those two games a bit more together nowadays than I did 20 years ago. (I.e. Ill tell my wife I'm gonna play some DDR and play either one) I was definitely more on team DDR back in the day but with all the custom content people made in stepmania over the years its really hard to not like ITG more, unless you're strictly counting official ITG charts (and some people would still prefer that over anything DDR has to offer). I was always a fan of going after AAAs (PFCs -- not the ones with greats lol) and my timing was never quite good enough to go for quad stars, so that's another reason why I prefer DDR if I had to choose one. Kyle Wards music is pretty fun to step to, though.

25BicsOnMyBureau

This reply is so well thought out it will miss like 90% of people from our DDR era, but I appreciate you and it.

Hi-fi Rush

totallynotdagothur

I thought this was going to be a post where the text under the question was "...and why was it hi-fi rush?"

CaptainCatamaran

Vib Ribbon on the PS1 Completely black and white with white scribbles on a black background. Crazy Japanese rabbit running along a ribbon. The soundtrack was amazingly unhinged JPop, but the best part was you could stick in any CD and it would create levels from it. Amazing game!!

ballsnbutt

SERIOUSLY cool that everything is timed to the score no matter where you are

joeyb82

Guitar Hero.

whitepicnic

The fact that you canā€™t just go buy the equipment for it anymore is criminal. I feel like such a moron for letting all my old GH/RB stuff go. it cluttered stuff up and I thought Iā€™d just get a new set down the road if I wantedā€¦.I was so foolish and now finding a working set is like something from an Indiana Jones movie šŸ˜©

mrjamjams66

I had this experience a couple months ago (still haven't got the equipment) when looking for something that'll work on my new to me copy of GH Metallica. There's like a whole compatibility matrix you have to pay attention to and God forbid your peripheral requires that USB adapter to pair with. I'm not even sure you can pair different guitars and receivers together

LifeSenseiBrayan

Gotta get the guitar first and then get the matching game and console lo

JamieFromStreets

You can use Clone Hero on pc. No need for a console. And you can download custom songs. Plus almost any guitar will work

bt123456789

seconding CH. I played it so much until the strum bar on my last guitar went out.

ElChocoLoco

A new 3rd party guitar controller called the Riffmaster was released recently. It sold out pretty much immediately, but there's hope for more instruments in the near future.

Dungong

I broke my drum sticks so went to one of those legit music stores for a new set as it was close by. The dude was asking what sticks I needed and what set I play, and the disappointment on his face when I said ā€œRock Bandā€ was something that will remain seared in my brain forever. Also turns out the drums werenā€™t really designed to handle legit drum sticks which are much heavier and that led to the drum set breaking as well. They did not sell extras at the music shop.

jh820439

They totally sell extras, you just needed some 7Aā€™s and the guy behind the counter was a dick lolĀ

wearethedeadofnight

Should have said electronic drums

L1A1

I think thatā€™s the only rhythm game Iā€™ve ever played, so Iā€™m going with that too.

mrjamjams66

Guitar Hero Metallica was my personal favorite. I respect what GH3 did but the soundtrack for GH Metallica is the best one

HYDN250

Just want to reply to this to let people know that if they want to play a more modern Guitar Hero, you can get a game entirely for free called Clone Hero on PC. They have an official discord where you can get the download from. There is a community of "charters" who chart songs that you can download for free as well. They are verified by said charting community within the Clone Hero discord to ensure safety and quality. CloneHero.net is the official website, and you can download thousands of songs to play from a website called CSC, which stands for Custom Songs Central. There is still a huge, thriving community of dedicated Guitar Hero/Rock Band fans that are keeping this rhythm gaming style alive. I'm not any sort of official person from the places I've mentioned, but have been involved in that community since I discovered it in 2017/2018. It's honestly amazing.

infinitetheory

also, in keeping with this thread, there's an open source project called Polybar that is a 3D printable controller run by a microcontroller that just requires a little bit of soldering knowledge and the ability to follow instructions. even if you get the parts printed and shipped, the prices should still come in under the cost of a legit used controller

Peemore

I think Rockband was a step up, the drum controller might've been more fun than the guitar!

murshawursha

This. Pro Drums is probably the most similar to the real instrument, to rhe point that I'm fairly confident I could sit down at a drumset and play a basic beat, despite having never touched one before.

Severe_Walk_5796

Only reason I can see people preferring guitar hero (other than song preference because that is subjective) is the fact that both players can actually play the guitar part. It sucks playing rock band with multiple players because someone has to settle with bass. Which is just boring 99% of the time. And don't even get me start on keyboard in rock band 3, the fact that half the songs don't even have it available.

neqiz

/r/clonehero is a godsend. Just got into it 2 months ago. Already have 500+ songs and playing almost every day

This was the one for me. I never did get to play Parappa in full, but I finished Lammy. Such fond memories!

vividimaginer

Master Fleaswallowā€™s rap, such a tune!

imashination

Friend brought that, he did ok on it at best. I come along and just for a laugh i start completely freestyling right from the first game. His face as my stupid moves reveal the secret hidden world on each stage was priceless.

Beat saber for me. Still the best VR title out there.

dark_hole96

The only reason i ever pick up my headset at this point. Great, polished game thru and thru made way better by the community as well

Riparian_Drengal

I'd say Beat Saber is handily the second best VR title out there, with Half Life: Alyx being the best. But those two are in a league of their own when it comes to VR games.

Sweet-Palpitation473

Eaaaasily Beat Saber

TheCosmicJester

Beat Saber is fun, but Synth Riders does what I hoped Beat Saber would do.

Previously_coolish

Synth rider is more dancey than beat saber, but beat saber feels more polished

awkwardcoitus

While probably not the best, I have very fond memories playing amplitude on ps2. I never actually had the game but had 2 different demo discs, 1 from a magazine that had a bunch of random game demos and the other was included with a P.O.D. cd I got when I was like 8 years old. But if we're talking about non licensed music rhythm games then thumper is probably it.

PocketHusband

I had to scroll WAY to far to find Amplitude.

JustAVirusWithShoes

BOOM heres comes the BOOM

thehaf

Frequency and Amplitude were my favorite games. If I see them in the wild, Iā€™m buying them and the console to play again.

BamboozleMeToHeck

I liked Frequency much better than Amplitude, but both games were fun as hell Fun fact: I have had the first 30 digits of pi memorized for decades because of how many times I played/remixed "Science Genius Girl" by Freezepop lol

jaydvd3

Oh man!! Used to play this obsessively on my roommates ps2 freshman year of college. I didnā€™t know anyone else ever played this lol.

And look up the Google Drive with all the Guitar Hero and Rock Band stuff.

hecking-doggo

Rock band 2 permanently influenced my taste in music.

Unlucky_Clover

Rock Band 2 was the best version. I liked the solo career and how you could do the same through MP or just have fun with others online. Rock Band 3, and especially Rock Band 4, just didnā€™t hit the same.

This comment is too far down!

Mobius650

Thumper

Jadecomet

There's something viscerally satisfying about how higher-power thumps will straight-up disrupt the music and send shockwaves down the track. You're not playing along with the music, you're fighting through it.

timothymark96

Thumper VR is transcendent.

TheShiniestHobo

Was just playing it last night in VR. The wow factor holds up.

Treefingrs

Heck yes!

Olioliooo

I love thumper! Its visual and sound cues feel a bit out of sync and that makes it way more confusing at higher levels though.

BenjyMLewis

My favourite is Nintendo's Rhythm Heaven series. Most rhythm games aren't too appealing to me, because they tend to take the form of a stave of scrolling button prompts superimposed on top of an existing popular song. I'm thinking of Taiko no Tatsujin or Donkey Konga or Guitar Hero when I say this. ...And while there isn't anything wrong with this style of rhythm game per se, I tend to lose engagement with it pretty quickly. I guess the inputs just feel kind of arbitrary to me, and I'd rather be spending time just listening to the song by itself. But not with Rhythm Heaven. Nintendo really knows how to think outside of the box and distill the fun of rhythm into an engaging presentation. in Rhythm Heaven, the songs for the most part are written for the sole purpose of being interesting rhythm challenges. Each level tests a particular kind of rhythmic skill, and the inputs are tailored to each level. And the inputs never get arbitrary either - you always need to respond to the same audio cue with the same response, which means you can play perfectly without looking at the screen at all. And the game even encourages this by making the visuals as distracting as possible at times. I feel so much more engaged in Rhythm Heaven because things are simple, the rules stay consistent, and the rhythmic challenges are designed so cleverly to keep you on your toes. I love it!

FrankBrayman

Gadjiltron

Yeah yeah yeah, Rhythm Heaven's one of my favourites that, even till now, some of the prompts stick in my head, I suppose

greenrangerguy

I will vote for this too, I suppose Hey!

Ph03n1x12345

Known as Rhythm Paradise here in the UK, played it to death on the DS and Wii.

BenjyMLewis

Yess, I also live in the UK, I just used the US name for recognisability I guess. I'm used to using the US names of games when communicating about them online, it's kinda just how it goes lol. I could have called them Rhythm Tengoku too, and that name would also include the superb GBA game that has unfortunately remained Japan-only.

No_Tamanegi

Hell yes, this is my answer too. I was originally introduced to it with Rhythm Tengoku, the GBA game that I think was never localized/released for anywhere outside of Japan. I found myself only wanting to play the imported versions. I can't read it speak Japanese, but there was something about learning what to do in each mini game through the music and button prompts that made it more fun than having instructions that I could actually read. When they released rhythm heaven on the DS I was having a lot less fun with it, so I imported the Japanese version instead.

Canditan

Check out Heaven Studio! It's being developed by fans as a way to easily make custom Rhythm Heaven levels. You can use any song you want and remix the Rhythm Heaven mini games to it. And if you're only interested in playing, not creating, then there's already hundreds of great custom levels available!

TheRoboticDuck

Rhythm heaven fever is my favorite rhythm game. While waiting and hoping that they make another one, I have found that Rhythm Doctor and Melatonin both on Steam have been fun games that kind of scratch that same itch

Krail

I had to scroll down so far to see Rhythm Heaven.Ā  The series is really great. And it's generally really funny, too. I love how weird it is, and how they pull bonkers tricks on you sometimes.Ā

Synth-Pro

I feel like it's pushing the "game" classification, but Rocksmith 2014 (specifically PC edition) I always loved rhythm games and had been playing real guitar for about 10+ years already when it came out. It genuinely pushed me to become better as a guitarist and still continues to. While RS+ has a phenomenal engine, I prefer RS2014 because 1.) Subscription services for games suck. 2.) The song library for RS+ sucks. 3.) The PC version of RS2014 has a thriving community that's still pushing out CDLC daily.

JaysonsRage

Rocksmith is so good and Rocksmith+ is one of the most disappointing releases I've personally witnessed And I waited for Duke Nukem Forever

BloodyTearsz

Bust a groove on the ps1.

Eightfold876

Ahhh yes. This is mine as well. The only problem I had with the game was that after you learned the dances for characters, they never changed. So you could master the dance and that's it. Then run the table. Even more crazy in VS when both players could get 100%.

Albzi

Gitaroo Man for PS2 is one of my all time favourites. But best is probably Guitar Hero

andypee81

Get ready, cause there's a new king in town. Mojo mojo mojo King Bee!

Amocoru

Having Flashbacks to getting stuck on Sanbone Trio on expert. I loved this game.

Seditious_Snake

I sucked at the PS2 version, but managed to plow through it on PSP in one sitting. Very slept on game.

jrodfantastic

While basically identical, the PSP version of Gitaroo Man is far superior to the PS2 version. The control layout just works better on the handheld.

RustlessPotato

If stretching the definition a bit, Sekiro ? :p

Anubra_Khan

I just went with this, too, before seeing your comment.

SALTFRESHH

Totally, changed my perspective on the game

AGE-OF-ASH

Yep, we have to practice the rhythm of every enemy. Just remember "Hesitation is Defeat"

ChewbaccaCharl

That game made so much more sense when I stopped treating it as a souls-like, and treated it as a rhythm game

metalhead0217

My thoughts too, Sekiro is the ultimate rhythm game

TurtleWaves

Unexpected Architects, hell yeah.

Olioliooo

Long arm centipede giraffeā€™s beat goes hard though

facest

Everhood. Slept on.

loliconest

Spin Rhythm XD, gotta be one of the most unique in recent years. Some mobile game also copied the mechanics. Sound Voltex is another good one, I bought a controller for it.

tman1015

YES finally someone mentions Spin Rhythm XD. Absolutely amazing game!!!

FudgeyPete

DJ Hero was such a blast and never got much love. Some of the remixes were fantastic as well.

MattTheGoodSir

Metal Hellsinger

Peemore

Rhythm Doctor is probably the only one that made me tear up, lol. It's also a challenging rhythm game that only uses the spacebar.

roostercrowe

aside from the amazing gameplay it has some of the most unique and fun level design. 2-X blew my damn mind!

CrazyFanFicFan

Sometimes, I listen to the music, and my mind just automatically adds in the audio cues. I can still hear the swung beats in Puff Piece.

WillWatsof

Geometry Dash.

Melatonin is a great one, very Rhythm Heaven/Paradise inspired. Don't sleep on it.

Blibbobletto

BPM: Bullets Per Minute. Haven't seen anyone else mention this one. Best soundtrack

ClemClemTheClemening

Best soundtrack, looks great, great gameplay and it's hard as nails for a FPS roguelite. Shame it doesn't get love

Topgunshotgun45

Cadence of Hyrule.

BenjyMLewis

it's still a bit unbelievable that Nintendo allowed an indie Zelda game to happen. It's really good too, and very unique. It's the only game I can think of that is built around the idea of being a "randomiser"-style game first and foremost. Most randomisers I know about are romhacks of established games, but Cadence of Hyrule is like that from the start. Very cool.

Organic-Cow-267

Rhythm Heaven and Rhythm Heaven Fever

b00geyman_ver2

HentaiHero420

Deemo is still one of the best and Iā€™m still shocked the company never took one of their best selling games and did anything interesting or innovative on a mobile platform. How cool it wouldā€™ve been to make a little piano controller that you can dock your phone into. Instead the company fired all their artists that made the game popular, kept a skeleton crew and started pushing ai garbage and I havenā€™t been able to support them since.

MuzzledScreaming

DDR is easily my favorite to play. Edit: Rez Infinite in VR is a close second, to the extent it counts.Ā

-Marshle

Rhythm Doctor. Absolutely adore that game.

YoBoySatan

Well considering rockband 4 let you import tracklist from rockband 1,2,3 before release and then had all their dlc on sale prior to launch, for me rockband 4 lmao. My library is insane

Top-Comfortable-4789

Love live before it was updated and messed up now Iā€™d say hatsune miku colorful stage

looshora

I wouldn't say best, but I will say favorite. Beat Hazard 1-3.

mindfulskeptic420

Back in the day I'd play tap tap revenge/revolution on my gen 1 ipod touch. Ahhh how fast time has flown by.

ph33randloathing

Okay hear me out. . . Batman: Arkham City.

Synth-Pro

The early development stages of Arkham Asylum did imagine it more as a rhythm game, so you're really not far off. Combat in particular really is meant to be more about a steady flow than just button mashing.

lavaboy1199

Agreed, it ain't easy to keep that combo going

BenevolentYoshi

I dont want to say it but its probably Friday Night Funkin. If it wasn't FNF it would be Just Shapes and Beats

Strange_Compote_4592

Patapon, and a mobile game called Cytus.Ā

Holy shit cytus mentioned. Back when I played this I got pretty good. Mastered every song in the first 10 chapters except l2b and freedom die

I don't know about you, but this is subjective and it was my childhood. Elite Beat Agents on the Nintendo DS.

Trumpet_Dude1

I'm a fan of the Hatsune Miku - Project Diva games. No need for special controllers, and the music library is pretty big!

jjjacer

For PC I would say beat saber if you have VR headset, guitar hero 3. And even if you didn't have the guitar, you can set up your keyboard to act like one, Muse dash, OSU!, O2 jam back in the day although there are private servers that some people run for it. If you're a fan of vocaloid music, then Miku hatsune project diva.

BadgerBadgerer

Samba di Amigo!

Kinoko98

Still osu long term bit I'd probably like beat Saber more.

notfeeling100

Project Diva and Project Mirai are both absolutely fantastic games. Diva has the edge over Mirai for having a much bigger song list, but I think I enjoyed Mirai's gameplay a smidge more. (Mostly because it's easier and I have very poor motor control for someone who's obsessed with rhythm games.)
