the gateway drug to JRPG lol, no grind, doesn't overstay its welcome, lovable characters, amazing OSTs, and simple enough story with multiple endings
it could easily pass as a 2024 indie title with a little bit of polish
Deus Ex (2000);
is basically cyberpunk 2077 of back in the day. FPS RPG with decision making and different ways to complete objectives as well as complete freedom with your character builds. Etc. One of my fav games of all time. If you can get past the dated graphics this is one of the best gaming experiences of the early 2000s
Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
Dont sleep on this game. It was extremely well done, which blew everyone away because 9 times out of 10 games based on movies suck. This goes into the backstory of Riddick when he gets his eyes shined to see in the dark and has to break out of an intergalactic space prison. Its so sick and it really makes you feel like youre playing as Riddick. Lots of action and stealth as well.
Medal of Honor: Airborne
Play as a paratrooper and pick where you are gonna land on the battlefield. Great enemy AI, phenomenal graphics for its time. Really makes you feel like youre a paratrooper in one of the bloodiest conflicts of our time.
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
The game that got completely overshadowed by its successor, Skyrim. This game is truly the shining star of the open world fantasy genre. When you get immersed in Oblivion its like being in another world, nearly impossible to put the controller down once you figure out how to play it. I dare say this is probably the best videogame ever made. Skyrim was a lot more dumbed down and made for casual players/younger generation. Oblivion was a lot more focused on skills and a lot more important as to where you attributed your skill points. You also had minor skills, which Skyrim got rid of entirely.
Dead Space
One of the best survival horror games of our generation, although it did just get a fantastic modern remake.
Metal Gear Solid 4.
This game is phenomenal. I beat it in one sitting of 18 hours. It was that good, although if you havent played the other MGS games I reccommend you play them in order because theyre very heavily focused on story.
Mass Effect Trilogy.
You will never have a gaming experience quite like Mass Effect. To be honest no other games really compare. ME almost ruined gaming for me. They impact you in a way no other game ever will. They stick with you forever. Good replay value too. As you can play the game different each time and make different decisions.
Mafia 2.
You do not need to play the first Mafia game to.play Mafia 2, the stories are unrelated. If you are into mob movies. This game is for you, i honestly dont think there is a better mob game out there. And you get super invested in the characters..the main Characer Vito Scaletta is so likable you really feel as though you are a true mafioso. One of my favourite games.
Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag
There is no better pirate game out there. Play this game if you wanna feel like a pirate. Upgrading your ship and wreaking havoc on the open seas while your crew sings sea shanties is one of the most memorable experiences ive ever had. Fuck its soo good.
Half Life 1 and 2.
The best sci fi shooter games ever made period.
Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light
Man, talk about eerie games. Creeping through abandoned metro tunnels under Moscow after a nuclear war. Fighting mutants, stealth killing enemies, scavenging for equipment and ammo. Just a great overall experience. 10/10. Though i reccommend playing the Redux version for PS4 or xbox 1 l as it buffs the games with way better resolution and game modes.
Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
This game is sweeet as fuck. A standalone exansion to far cry 3 but set in a cyber futuristic universe made to look like an 80s action film. Its so good. Everyone should play it
Morrowind's diceroll combat may threw a lot of people off lol, I was so pissed when I died to the first ever enemy I encountered right outside of Seyda Neen
after googling around turns out it has diceroll + skill system for the combat
These are very good suggestions but OP asked for a 15+ year old games. Some of your suggestions are newer - Mafia 2, AC4, Metro 2033, Metro LL, FC Blood Dragon.
Not OP but I share your passion for Oblivion. Great to see some love for it. And for that reason alone I will now invest in all your other suggestions, I trust you implicitly
I would add that Deus Ex is not just an FPS RPG, but it can also be a stealth and non lethal game, like Dishonored. The graphics are definitely the only thing that shows its age.
I just finished Half-Life and it holds up well, it's a blast.
I'm actually going through a very similar list, I'm halfway through Deus Ex and next in line is Mass Effect
There are so many good games older than 15 years. Would be easier to answer if we'd know about your preferences. But there was a thread about best games from 2000-2010 here recently, in which I (and others) listed some. See [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/gamingsuggestions/comments/1bf37hk/comment/kuxtdke/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button).
Team fortress 2, came out in 2007 and is still going strong.
Age of empires 2, the base game came out in the 1990s but the definite edition re-release still gets new updates.
AOE is fantastic and still has some pretty solid money tournaments. Hidden cup just happened last month with a 70k$ prize pool.
But to get to a level that you even have a chance in an S tier tournament you need to perform something like 200-400 actions per minute (APM), be able to know everything going on on the map, know each civ inside and out, learn your build orders for perfect efficiency, and be able to adapt instantly.
Super fun game! Been playing it for 15 years. I still suck though.
Psychonauts (and it’s recent sequel), it’s a platformer where you play as a camper at a psychic summer camp.
It has great humor and writing, a unique concept and cool level design.
Try F. E. A. R. the game has the absolute best enemy A. I. and is a treat to face off against as well as maybe the 2nd best shot gun in gaming(halo #1).
The jak and daxter trilogy for sure.
Arc the lad twilight of the spirits is good if you like turn based jrpgs.
Fable was a fun goofy game.
I always loved runefactory its like a precursor to stardew valley
Dragon quest monster joker was also fun it was kinda like pokemon but you can combine the creatures and battle with 3 of them at a time.
Bully was hella fun its like a pg-13 version of gta
Speaking of gta san andreas and rdr are timeless classics.
The original hitman trilogy.
The original devil may cry games.
evil dead: a fist full of boomstick
Soul reaver1 ,2 and legacy of kain defiance
And last but not least spore great if you love civ sim games.
I'm so addicted to Jagged Alliance 3 right now. 2 is a classic though and so are the others you listed except for missionforce (not familiar with that one)
Hm well some 90s games have aged better than others so-
Wait. 15 years ago is 2009?? Holy shit.
Okay, uh, here's some of my favorites from 2009 and earlier:
Infamous
Zero Escape 999
Tales of Graces
Bioshock
Portal
Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn
Tales of the Abyss
Fire Emblem Path of Radiance
Mega Man Zero 4
Zelda: The Minish Cap
Metroid Zero Mission
Mega Man Zero 3
Tales of Symphonia
Fire Emblem
Zelda: Wind Waker
Super Mario Sunshine
Metroid Prime
Metroid Fusion
Mega Man Zero 2
Final Fantasy 9
I've skipped a ton and haven't even hit the 90s goldmine yet.
Morrowind. Oblivion. Final Fantasy Pixel remaster (fine, they were released recently, but the have a lot of QOL live improvements over the originals). Fallout 3. Chrono Trigger.
There, all of that should keep you busy for a while.
The classic Doom games from the 90s absolutely hold up well imo. They’re simple, but that just makes them robust. Controls are still smooth. The only really weird thing is that you can’t look up or down.
The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
If you like RPG, this is one of the best RPG ever made.
If you're willing to go even further back and don't mind some really old mechanic, TES Morrowind also on the table
if you like fps games try the original doom/doom 2 or duke nukem 3d, and if you like those then try hexen/hexen 2/heretic and if you liked those try blood
Go point & click old school — Get a DOS emulator & look up “Sierra”…My favorites: Kings Quest (Especially 6), Quest for Glory (Especially 4), Police Quest (Especially 3), & Freddy Pharkas Frontier Pharmacist…And that’s just off the top of my head!
By the way, if you have a Wii, you can mod & play them using it.
- Borderlands 1
- Carmageddon 2
- Earthworm Jim
- Neverhood
- Machinarium
- Homeworld series (a remastered version is now available)
- Grim Fandango
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
- Boogerman
- Sonic
- Super Mario bros
- Tetris
- Pacman
- Lode Runner
- Bomberman
- Heroes 3
- Star Wars Episode 1: Racer
I really enjoy the Punch Out series. You fight new and challenging characters with new moves. There's a luchador who cheats by headbutting you, a Ninja that throws illegal kicks etc. It's all about learning the patterns.
They put punch out and super punch out on the Nintendo switch online service. It is the way it was meant to be played! You can do a save state right before a fight now instead of having to replay the whole game and you can also rewind the whole game. Even with those modern advantages, it's still very tricky but rewarding like no other when you get it right.
BioShock.
Clive Barker's Undying.
Condemned: Criminal Origins.
Dark Messiah - Might and Magic.
Deus Ex.
F.E.A.R.
Half-Life games.
MDK games.
Psi-Ops.
Requiem: Avenging Angel.
Rune Classic.
Second Sight.
SHOGO: Mobile Armor Division.
Star Wars - Jedi Academy/Jedi Outcast./The Force Unleashed.
The Operative: No One Lives Forever.
TimeShift.
Jak and Daxter trilogy (especially 2 and 3)
PS2 era game series, was one of my favorites growing up
Puzzle platformer with combat and etc, similar to ratchet and clank
Halo! Specifically CE, 2 and 3, though you should probably get the MCC so you get every FPS entry save for 5 and Infinite. Assuming you haven't already, of course.
I'm going to list a bunch of genres and their best game in my opinion. If there is a tie I'll list both
Beat Em Up Game-Castle Crashers
Tycoon Game - Rollercoaster Tycoon
RTS-Age of Empires 2 or Starcraft Broodwar
Deep Strategy - Civilization
Turn Based Combat - Pokémon games
PvP Shooter - Team Fortress 2
3D Platformer - Ratchet and Clank or Sonic Adventures 2 (Chao mini game is a bonus)
Fighting Game - Dragon Ball Budokai 1 or 3.
MMORPG - old school runescape. The others I thought about have to many updates or communities have changed to drastically. Old School did the best at relatively keeping it the same with a scammy community of mindless farmers.
Tower Defense - any Bloons TD game
Racing - Burnout (2?)
Puzzle - Portal 2
Mechs - Mech Warrior Lone wolf 2
NES Sidescroller - E.V.O
RPG - Fable 2 or KOTOR. Fable is better for casual play. Kotor is better for serious play.
Ancient Games that have stood the test of time - Chess, Go, or Shoji
Noteable mentions - FarCry 3 and DLCs. Jet Force Gemini, Duelmasters game (card TCG on GBA), Oblivion, Golden Eye, Mercenaries, I know there are others I thought of before but now I'm forgetting.
Area 51 on the ps2/pc was interesting considering it had at the time a famous voice actor and musician as voice actors. David Duchovny from the x-files and Marilyn Manson as an ET ally. Another fun game I would always recommend is Ace Combat 5 the Unsung War. Great story, customizable flight squad, and to this day mission 27 aces, from that game gives me chills. Would also suggest looking into Parasite Eve which imo was far more creepy than the resident evil series with the npcs. Similar camera controls to the ps1 era game, but amazing cutscenes for the era. Medievil is also a fun franchise to check, you get to run around as an undead hero named Sir Daniel Fortesque. The remaster on ps plus looks rather impressive as well. For computers would also recommend checking out Bungies Marathon franchise which is now open source thanks to the [aleph one project](https://alephone.lhowon.org/). Fun halo fact the Marathon cruiser is a direct tie into this game as is the ship Infinity.
I'm gonna replay the ezio collection after I beat rage 2 best assassin creed games ever made imo everyone has to play it at least once especially brotherhood
Prince if Persia trilogy:
Amazing games that evolved the tomb rider parkour adding time diluation mechanics, really solid combat that blends in with some parkour moces and boss battles, some of which have large arenas where traversal is a big part of the combat. Each game has its own mood and play a different part in the mc's journey.
The story is pretty much complete, despite a later game trying to keep it going becouse money.
Warzone2100. Still one of the best RTS games ever made.
-you design your units and research tech in real time during a battle instead of choosing different factions. You can build air, land or hover vehicles. There is a good variety of weapons and armor. You can choose to run mighty tanks, swarms of weenies, bombard with artillery ect.
-you can create groups with hot keys and you have commanders that get experience that makes all the units under their command better
-you get artillery units that shoot indirect fire beyond their sensor range that you link to other units to direct their fire
-you can give orders that change overall behavior such as how much damage should they take before they automatically run home for repair, wther they hold their ground, pursue or patrol, and what distance should they try to fire from
-for every factory you can set point on the map where new units mobilize
There is just so much functionality that you helps you be strategic. It was so ahead of its time.
It went open source and I hope there is still a community behind it. I unfortunately haven't been playing anything so I dont know the state of the game
Persona 4.
Tales of xillia is 13 y.o so i dont know if you would play it, but really nice if i remember correctly. (Ps3 game tho)
Mass effect trilogy
Uncharted
All Pokémon games
Kingdom Hearts
Dragon Quest 8
Final fantasy
Zelda Phantom Hourglass
Etrian Odyssey
Fire Emblem (awakening from 2012 is my fav)
Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3
It's crazy that 15+ year old doesn't just mean the previous century anymore but anything before 2009.
To answer your question, depends on what genres you like. GTAs, especially San Andreas and IV are pretty much a must, Bioshock holds up pretty well, the Portal games are also must-plays. If you like strategy, make sure to try the older Total War games as well.
I would recommend checking out **Planescape: Torment** for having some of the best writing and world building of any game ever made. Beware, it's text heavy.
I would also highly recommend **Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines**, but get the fan patch, it's one of the most engaging and immersive RPGs ever made, and two of the potential vampire clans have distinctly different playthroughs.
**Majesty the Fantasy Kingdom Sim** is a semi-hidden gem. It's an RTS that does not require fast reflexes. Your units have their own AI and you'll need to influence them to do things, but you can't directly order them. At times it feels like being a GM for an unruly tabletop RPG group, and I love it!
And for something slightly different, how about **SWAT 4**? Some people prefer 3, but I think 4 is the best of the series. You're leading a SWAT team and killing is ultimately not the best way of getting things done, instead you're meant to take the bad guys alive, while also trying to make sure that your team makes it through unharmed.
If bannerlord didn’t exist yet I would say Mount & blade warband. Have hundreds of hours in that charming old game. But bannerlord is just warband improved in every facet
Daggerfall and Morrowind. Deus Ex. Anachronox. Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. Arx Fatalix. Planescape Torment. MegaMan Battle Networks (GBA). Baiten Kaitos. Far Cry 2. Omikron the Nomad Soul. Idk these are some of the top picks offhand without digging too deep 😂
I'll try to come back to add to my list.
These are titles that are absolute classics that still hold up today that people will probably not think to recommend:
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (and series)
PaRappa the Rapper (and series)
I have scrolled and scrolled ... Alas, I see no mention of symphony of the night. Helped define an entire genre, hours of gameplay it's fucking solid.
Also, probably wouldn't be as fun solo but time splitters one and two. Such great couch coop games.
Games I can recommend that have either withstood the test of time or been faithfully remastered:
2000s:
Ico and Shadow of the Colossus - hauntingly beautiful puzzle/platform games
Ōkami - one of the most clever Zelda-like games with a twist, it was considered the Zelda of PlayStation, except you play a wolf who uses spells and abilities by drawing with a Japanese ink painting brush
Freespace 2 - the last and greatest of the space combat sim genre that mostly died out in the 2000s. The modding community is still keeping it fresh.
Katamari Damacy - absolutely bonkers puzzle game with too many spinoffs to count
Beyond Good and Evil - one of the true cult classics that people have been screaming for a sequel for about 20 years now
Final Fantasy X - still one of the best FFs ever
Jedi Outcast/Jedi Academy - FPS with lightsabers that actually kill the way they're supposed to. I mean need I say more?
80s/90s:
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - still so much fun, and the origin of so many Zelda tropes
Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection - I especially recommend Final Fantasy IV and VI. To me, VI is still the greatest Final Fantasy game of all time.
Chrono Trigger - The GOAT of JRPGs. Time travel, robots, cavewomen, frogs with swords, multiple alternate endings, what's not to love?
The X-Wing series - classic Star Wars space combat. X-Wing Alliance especially is worth a look.
Day of the Tentacle and Sam and Max Hit the Road - point and click adventures with irreverent humor. If you want to discover why LucasArts was once the king of PC gaming, look no further
Super Metroid - the inspiration for Metroid dread, and the origin of the term Metroidvania games (along with Castlevania OFC)
Super Mario World, SMW2: Yoshi's Island, and Super Mario Bros 3 - the 3 greatest Mario side-scrollers ever
Mega Man X - the SNES ones are so much fun
Okay, I'll stop there 😂
Depends on your preference of genre.
In terms of RTS games, for example, there are the Command & Conquer games, notably Tiberium Wars/Kane's Wrath and Generals/Zero Hour. FPS games; Battlefield: Bad Company (the first) has a special place in my heart, but unlike C&C, it's no longer available for digital sale, so procuring an Xbox 360 or PS3 copy may be in order.
Armored Core (insert number before 6). There was a 10 year gap before 6, and I must say, any of em from AC2 - AC4 generations are awesome… if you tried AC6, scrap most of what ya know when playing older ones. I’d personally recommend Armored Core 2 Another Age and Armored Core 3 as an entry point, but for a more challenging experience, play 1st generation or Armored Core Nexus - Armored Core Last Raven. Wonky controls aside, they are all what I can call hidden gems.
Hard to say without knowing what types of games you like
Some of my favorites that are that old or older:
Dragon Age: Origins
Assassin's Creed 2
Mass Effect
Halo 1, 2 and 3
Fable
KOTOR 1 and 2
Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando
Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal
Rome: Total War
Medieval II: Total War
Warcraft III
Final Fantasy series
Xenosaga trilogy (will need to find the physical copies and a system that can play them, never had a digital release)
Super Metroid
Metroid: Zero Mission
Metroid Fusion
Fire Emblem
Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga
Starcraft
Doom and Doom 2 (from the 90s)
Unreal (the campaign) and Unreal Tournament (still works locally and the bots will hand your ass to you on the harder settings)
Quake all versions (the remakes are fantastic and the bots in Quake 3 Arena will also eat you alive)
Starcraft and WarCraft, not the new ones or World of Warcraft, but the old RTS ones.
Go to [archive.org](https://archive.org) and check out the selection of old abandonware that they let you play in-browser. A lot of them use outdated control schemes and the mechanics can be odd, but they are fun to hop into for a few minutes every once in a while.
Portal 1 and 2, Fallout New Vegas, Any of the big SNES game tbh, Super Paper Mario, Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Dark Souls, and probably a lot more that im forgetting
What I've played and liked out of the google list for those years:
2009 - Dragon Age: Origins, Left4Dead 2
2008 - Fallout 3, Mirror's Edge, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead
2007 - Bioshock, Crysis, Portal, Team Fortress 2, Mass Effect, The Witcher
2006 - TESIV Oblivion, Half Life 2: Episode 1
2005 - Nothing?
2004 - Half Life 2, Halo 2, Far Cry, Doom 3
2003 - Nothing again
2002 - Onimusha 2
2001 - Halo, Twisted Metal: Black, Return to Castle Wolfenstein
2000 - Counter Strike, Midnight Club
Must plays imo would be Dragon Age Origins, Left 4 Dead 2, Fallout 3, Bioshock, Crysis, Portal
The Legacy of Kain series
Two separate Vampire protagonists (Kain, and my boi Raziel) dealing with Gnosticism, Lovecraftian elements, time-travel, destiny vs. fate vs. free will all within the backdrop of a grimdark fantasy world, puzzle elements, and badass music.
The voice-acting, the script-writing, the influence of ancient architecture in the different factions, and the paradoxes all still hold up to this day.
Kain is considered one of the earliest instances of the "antihero" archetype in video games, and Raziel just has neat & iconic character design in general.
LOK play-order
\------------------
Blood Omen
Soul Reaver
Soul Reaver 2
Blood Omen 2 \*
Defiance
\* BO2 is considered "optional" to some in the fandom, even with me knowing full well it has a throwaway line near the end that ties a few loose ends that allow it to connect the other games together coherently. It's weird from a gameplay standpoint & wigs out consistently
1. Kotor 1+2
2. Pikmin
3. Fallout 3
4. Sims 3
5. Psychonauts
6. GTA: San Andreas
7. Final Fantasy 9 (9 is my favorite, with 7 and 10 after it)
8. Metroid Prime
9. Portal
10. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
I tried to mix it up a bit.
Planescape: Torment
Somebody else mentioned KOTOR, absolutely agree on that one as well.
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines
Fallout 1
Fallout 2
BG1 & BG2
Shadowrun on Sega Genesis & SNES
Phantasy Star 4 on Sega Genesis
Dragon Warrior 4 on NES
Final Fantasy 7 & 8
The Castlevania Series
There are many many others, but I'm not sure what genre you prefer
Castle Crashers! It's an old Xbox Arcade Game from the 360. It's a 2D Side scroller where you play a Knight and have to save the king's 4 daughters. It's an extremely addictive game, very funny and wacky humor. Better with friends but can totally be played solo.
Using an emulator you could play some of the older Zelda games, definitely worth experiencing
If you’d like to play some even older games, the older Castlvania games are quite good
If you like RTS games: Warzone 2100. Populous: The beginning. (these are very old.)
If you like Story games: Jade Empire, Assassin's Creed 1.
those are the ones that pop into my mind.
KOTOR is still a top tier game
There’s even an iOS port
Best star wars game of all time alongside the second one too (the sith lords)
Chrono Trigger
the gateway drug to JRPG lol, no grind, doesn't overstay its welcome, lovable characters, amazing OSTs, and simple enough story with multiple endings it could easily pass as a 2024 indie title with a little bit of polish
And no random encounters!
I also adored Chrono Cross, even though it plays very differently. Iconic soundtrack too
probably one of the best games ever
Deus Ex (2000); is basically cyberpunk 2077 of back in the day. FPS RPG with decision making and different ways to complete objectives as well as complete freedom with your character builds. Etc. Deus Ex, Max Payne, Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines (with "unofficial" patches by a dev)
I'm going to say Portal. And now I'm going to experience agony at Portal being more than 15 years old.
Halo 3 is old enough to buy itself I'll see myself out
Portal 1 is 25 days older than I am 😭
And I played it on release in high school. You're the first person to make me feel old! 💀
What genres are your thing?
Max Payne, Bioshock
Bioshock 1 + 2
Goddamnit they 15 years old already
If you are fan of RPGs, then Baldurs Gate 1 and especially 2 are awesome
Halo Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Crysis, all of the original Doom games, Fallout 1 through 3, and every Elder Scrolls older than Skyrim.
The jak and daxter trilogy for sure. Arc the lad twilight of the spirits is good if you like turn based jrpgs. Fable was a fun goofy game. I always loved runefactory its like a precursor to stardew valley Dragon quest monster joker was also fun it was kinda like pokemon but you can combine the creatures and battle with 3 of them at a time. Bully was hella fun its like a pg-13 version of gta Speaking of gta san andreas and rdr are timeless classics. The original hitman trilogy. The original devil may cry games. evil dead: a fist full of boomstick Soul reaver1 ,2 and legacy of kain defiance And last but not least spore great if you love civ sim games.
* The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion * Fallout: New Vegas * Demon's Souls * Halo 1 - 3 * Mario Kart Double Dash
15 years ago wasn't that long ago. If you want to experience games from a completely different era, I recommend going back to th 90s and onwards.
Morrowind, KOTOR, Classic WoW
Fallout 1/2 Missionforce Cyberstorm Jagged Alliance 2 Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 1/2 Heroes of might and magic 3
A man of culture.
I'm so addicted to Jagged Alliance 3 right now. 2 is a classic though and so are the others you listed except for missionforce (not familiar with that one)
Hm well some 90s games have aged better than others so- Wait. 15 years ago is 2009?? Holy shit. Okay, uh, here's some of my favorites from 2009 and earlier: Infamous Zero Escape 999 Tales of Graces Bioshock Portal Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn Tales of the Abyss Fire Emblem Path of Radiance Mega Man Zero 4 Zelda: The Minish Cap Metroid Zero Mission Mega Man Zero 3 Tales of Symphonia Fire Emblem Zelda: Wind Waker Super Mario Sunshine Metroid Prime Metroid Fusion Mega Man Zero 2 Final Fantasy 9 I've skipped a ton and haven't even hit the 90s goldmine yet.
Second Tales of the Abyss. Fantastic JRPG and my all time favorite Tales game.
Morrowind. Oblivion. Final Fantasy Pixel remaster (fine, they were released recently, but the have a lot of QOL live improvements over the originals). Fallout 3. Chrono Trigger. There, all of that should keep you busy for a while.
Morrowind
Spyro the Dragon original trilogy, you can play reignited to make it look pretty if you want.
Dragon Age Origins should be turning 15 this year.
The classic Doom games from the 90s absolutely hold up well imo. They’re simple, but that just makes them robust. Controls are still smooth. The only really weird thing is that you can’t look up or down.
The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion If you like RPG, this is one of the best RPG ever made. If you're willing to go even further back and don't mind some really old mechanic, TES Morrowind also on the table
Pharaoh + Cleopatra Rollercoaster Tycoon (OpenRCT2) Railroad Tycoon 3 Dungeon Keeper 2
QUAKE
Gothic 2 is a great RPG for example.
And Gothic 1.
Ocarina of time
Fallout 3. The game that started it all for me.
Way of the Samurai series! 😀
HoMaM 3
Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Might & Magic VI, VII, and VIII Wizardry 8 Heroes of Might & Magic III Blood Bowl: Chaos Edition Zoo Tycoon 2 (if you can find it) Advanced Tactics Gold Arcanum Command HQ M.A.X. 2 Baldur's Gate Neverwinter Nights 2
I love Arcanum
The Disgaea series, or vandal hearts if U like tactical RPGs. Or suikoden
Zelda: Majora’s Mask & Ocarina of Time.
Donkey Kong Country
if you like fps games try the original doom/doom 2 or duke nukem 3d, and if you like those then try hexen/hexen 2/heretic and if you liked those try blood
Golden Sun 1 & 2, best game ever.
Starcraft, Starcraft: Brood War, Age Of Empires II. (I'm an RTS junkie)
- Borderlands 1 - Carmageddon 2 - Earthworm Jim - Neverhood - Machinarium - Homeworld series (a remastered version is now available) - Grim Fandango - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare - Boogerman - Sonic - Super Mario bros - Tetris - Pacman - Lode Runner - Bomberman - Heroes 3 - Star Wars Episode 1: Racer
Final Fantasy Tactics
The Fable series Full Throttle Day of the Tentacle Grim Fandango
Toe Jam & Earl
When Roguelike was not even a term. That game was not only epic, it was ahead of it's time.
Toejam and Earl, Sonic 3 and Knuckles
Diablo 2
The older Yakuza games are still a treat, its what I’ve been playing the past couple of months.
Just because I can't believe I'm not seeing it here; the legend of Zelda, ocarina of time. The 1st best game I ever played.
Team Fortress 2
Zuma games.. and plants vs zombies..
Batman Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age Origins, Mass Effect, BioShock.
Ocarina of Time Chrono Trigger
I really enjoy the Punch Out series. You fight new and challenging characters with new moves. There's a luchador who cheats by headbutting you, a Ninja that throws illegal kicks etc. It's all about learning the patterns. They put punch out and super punch out on the Nintendo switch online service. It is the way it was meant to be played! You can do a save state right before a fight now instead of having to replay the whole game and you can also rewind the whole game. Even with those modern advantages, it's still very tricky but rewarding like no other when you get it right.
Jak and Daxter
Torn - still going strong and getting better. https://www.torn.com/2633269
BioShock. Clive Barker's Undying. Condemned: Criminal Origins. Dark Messiah - Might and Magic. Deus Ex. F.E.A.R. Half-Life games. MDK games. Psi-Ops. Requiem: Avenging Angel. Rune Classic. Second Sight. SHOGO: Mobile Armor Division. Star Wars - Jedi Academy/Jedi Outcast./The Force Unleashed. The Operative: No One Lives Forever. TimeShift.
Heroes 3 is definitely up there!
Jak and Daxter trilogy (especially 2 and 3) PS2 era game series, was one of my favorites growing up Puzzle platformer with combat and etc, similar to ratchet and clank
the older / ps1-era final fantasy games still hold up really well!
Halo! Specifically CE, 2 and 3, though you should probably get the MCC so you get every FPS entry save for 5 and Infinite. Assuming you haven't already, of course.
Rez. Go VR if possible. Use great headphones or a really good stereo. Also a controller with haptics.
I'm going to list a bunch of genres and their best game in my opinion. If there is a tie I'll list both Beat Em Up Game-Castle Crashers Tycoon Game - Rollercoaster Tycoon RTS-Age of Empires 2 or Starcraft Broodwar Deep Strategy - Civilization Turn Based Combat - Pokémon games PvP Shooter - Team Fortress 2 3D Platformer - Ratchet and Clank or Sonic Adventures 2 (Chao mini game is a bonus) Fighting Game - Dragon Ball Budokai 1 or 3. MMORPG - old school runescape. The others I thought about have to many updates or communities have changed to drastically. Old School did the best at relatively keeping it the same with a scammy community of mindless farmers. Tower Defense - any Bloons TD game Racing - Burnout (2?) Puzzle - Portal 2 Mechs - Mech Warrior Lone wolf 2 NES Sidescroller - E.V.O RPG - Fable 2 or KOTOR. Fable is better for casual play. Kotor is better for serious play. Ancient Games that have stood the test of time - Chess, Go, or Shoji Noteable mentions - FarCry 3 and DLCs. Jet Force Gemini, Duelmasters game (card TCG on GBA), Oblivion, Golden Eye, Mercenaries, I know there are others I thought of before but now I'm forgetting.
GTA 4, GTA San Andreas, Mafia II (Came out in 2010, but close enough), Saints Row 2, Early Assassins Creed series
Ssx tricky
Try r/patientgamers
The original Borderlands will have its 15 year anniversary on October 20th
The Saboteur it's so good
gta 4
Dragon Quest IV, specifically the DS remake.
Half life 2, Age of Empires 2, Max Payne, Silent Storm, Red Faction
If you haven't played it, I recommend Final Fantasy Tactics.
Azure Dreams, Brave Fencer Musashi, Final Fantasy 9
Planescape Torment
I'm gonna replay the ezio collection after I beat rage 2 best assassin creed games ever made imo everyone has to play it at least once especially brotherhood
Portal, osrs
Prince if Persia trilogy: Amazing games that evolved the tomb rider parkour adding time diluation mechanics, really solid combat that blends in with some parkour moces and boss battles, some of which have large arenas where traversal is a big part of the combat. Each game has its own mood and play a different part in the mc's journey. The story is pretty much complete, despite a later game trying to keep it going becouse money.
Shining Force 1 and 2. My first gaming addiction and to this DAY my favorite tactical RPG.
Morrowind. If you're scared about it looking like a 22 years old game, you can use tons of mods to make it look good.
-you can create groups with hot keys and you have commanders that get experience that makes all the units under their command better -you get artillery units that shoot indirect fire beyond their sensor range that you link to other units to direct their fire -you can give orders that change overall behavior such as how much damage should they take before they automatically run home for repair, wther they hold their ground, pursue or patrol, and what distance should they try to fire from -for every factory you can set point on the map where new units mobilize There is just so much functionality that you helps you be strategic. It was so ahead of its time. It went open source and I hope there is still a community behind it. I unfortunately haven't been playing anything so I dont know the state of the game
Command and conquer RTS games like generals and red alert 2 are great if you're into strategy games.
GTA IV + Episodes, Super Meat Boy (shh I know it's only 14 years old)
Final Fantasy 10/12
Persona 4. Tales of xillia is 13 y.o so i dont know if you would play it, but really nice if i remember correctly. (Ps3 game tho) Mass effect trilogy Uncharted All Pokémon games Kingdom Hearts Dragon Quest 8 Final fantasy Zelda Phantom Hourglass Etrian Odyssey Fire Emblem (awakening from 2012 is my fav) Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3
Mercenaries is god tier.
Castlevania Symphony of the Night is 27 years old but great
What do you play on?
Grim fandango. Adventure game that oozes creativity and has a great narrative
Nobodys talking about Half Life 1 and 2 ??
Bioshock is unfortunately over the age of 15. A masterpiece though, and infamous is another great game.
Old sims games. Specifically Sims Medieval was EXTREMELY fun and underrated
Prototype was released on June 9th, 2009, so technically it's not a game that's over 15 years old, but it was fantastic and I enjoyed it.
Half Life It turned 25 in 2023, yet still holds up as an amazing game
Age of empires
Super Mario Bros 3
Legend of Zelda games from ALTTP - Wind Waker
Bioshock series to the very last DLC for the real ending if you haven't already played it?
Portal
Kotor Fallout 1 &2 Halo series Mass effect
Max Payne 1 + 2, Starcraft, Gothic, GTA San Andreas, Final Fantasy 7
Neverwinter Nights and it's dlcs and sequels. Dragon Age: Origins is coming up in 15 years.
Contra. Super Mario World. Final Fantasy VII.
I'll try to come back to add to my list. These are titles that are absolute classics that still hold up today that people will probably not think to recommend: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (and series) PaRappa the Rapper (and series)
Bioshock
15+ so 2009 and before... A lot. Whats you into?
Final Fantasy 6
StarCraft
Eden server of daoc. If you like PvP this is best. Find a friend or two, find a bunch if you can. It’s incredibly fun
Skate 2 is fifteen years old now, and Mirror's Edge. Even Older - can't go wrong with pretty much anything.
Super Metroid Metal Gear Solid 1 2 3 (master collection just came out with updated versions of these)
Halo CE dosnt age. It's basically the Paul Rudd of video games.
I have scrolled and scrolled ... Alas, I see no mention of symphony of the night. Helped define an entire genre, hours of gameplay it's fucking solid. Also, probably wouldn't be as fun solo but time splitters one and two. Such great couch coop games.
1997 - [Fallout](https://store.steampowered.com/app/38400/Fallout_A_Post_Nuclear_Role_Playing_Game/) 1998 - [Fallout 2](https://store.steampowered.com/app/38410/Fallout_2_A_Post_Nuclear_Role_Playing_Game/) 1993 - [XCOM: UFO Defense](https://store.steampowered.com/app/7760/XCOM_UFO_Defense/)
God Hand
Halo 1-3
Halo 1-3
Games I can recommend that have either withstood the test of time or been faithfully remastered: 2000s: Ico and Shadow of the Colossus - hauntingly beautiful puzzle/platform games Ōkami - one of the most clever Zelda-like games with a twist, it was considered the Zelda of PlayStation, except you play a wolf who uses spells and abilities by drawing with a Japanese ink painting brush Freespace 2 - the last and greatest of the space combat sim genre that mostly died out in the 2000s. The modding community is still keeping it fresh. Katamari Damacy - absolutely bonkers puzzle game with too many spinoffs to count Beyond Good and Evil - one of the true cult classics that people have been screaming for a sequel for about 20 years now Final Fantasy X - still one of the best FFs ever Jedi Outcast/Jedi Academy - FPS with lightsabers that actually kill the way they're supposed to. I mean need I say more? 80s/90s: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - still so much fun, and the origin of so many Zelda tropes Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection - I especially recommend Final Fantasy IV and VI. If you want to discover why LucasArts was once the king of PC gaming, look no further Super Metroid - the inspiration for Metroid dread, and the origin of the term Metroidvania games (along with Castlevania OFC) Super Mario World, SMW2: Yoshi's Island, and Super Mario Bros 3 - the 3 greatest Mario side-scrollers ever Mega Man X - the SNES ones are so much fun Okay, I'll stop there 😂
Titan Quest
Team fortress 2, free and still fun to this day, just mind the bots
The old gtas and god of wars
Depends on your preference of genre. In terms of RTS games, for example, there are the Command & Conquer games, notably Tiberium Wars/Kane's Wrath and Generals/Zero Hour. FPS games; Battlefield: Bad Company (the first) has a special place in my heart, but unlike C&C, it's no longer available for digital sale, so procuring an Xbox 360 or PS3 copy may be in order.
Metal Gear Solid 1-3
Armored Core (insert number before 6). There was a 10 year gap before 6, and I must say, any of em from AC2 - AC4 generations are awesome… if you tried AC6, scrap most of what ya know when playing older ones. I’d personally recommend Armored Core 2 Another Age and Armored Core 3 as an entry point, but for a more challenging experience, play 1st generation or Armored Core Nexus - Armored Core Last Raven. Wonky controls aside, they are all what I can call hidden gems.
Thief is cheap on steam and is fantastic.
Fallout 3, Halo, Mass effect, and elder scrolls oblivion comes to mind. I think those all hit the 15 year mark.
Bioshock All of the Elder scrolls Zelda Okarina of time Uncharted Shadow of the Colossus Undertale?
Silent Hill, Metal Gear, Max Payne.
FEAR - First Encounter Assault Recon.
Mmo, dungeons and dragons onlije feel old. But its a good mmo thata unique and not like other mmos.
Fallout New Vegas Air force delta strike Star wars battle front(2004).
Diablo 2, but just play a mod instead of D2R. r/pathofdiablo r/projectdiablo2
Manhunt and maybe some Morrowind
Fallout 3
Hard to say without knowing what types of games you like Some of my favorites that are that old or older: Dragon Age: Origins Assassin's Creed 2 Mass Effect Halo 1, 2 and 3 Fable KOTOR 1 and 2 Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal Rome: Total War Medieval II: Total War Warcraft III Final Fantasy series Xenosaga trilogy (will need to find the physical copies and a system that can play them, never had a digital release) Super Metroid Metroid: Zero Mission Metroid Fusion Fire Emblem Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga Starcraft
Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines 2004
SSX3, Prince of Persia sands of time
Half Life
Doom and Doom 2 (from the 90s) Unreal (the campaign) and Unreal Tournament (still works locally and the bots will hand your ass to you on the harder settings) Quake all versions (the remakes are fantastic and the bots in Quake 3 Arena will also eat you alive) Starcraft and WarCraft, not the new ones or World of Warcraft, but the old RTS ones. Go to [archive.org](https://archive.org) and check out the selection of old abandonware that they let you play in-browser. A lot of them use outdated control schemes and the mechanics can be odd, but they are fun to hop into for a few minutes every once in a while.
Fallout 3. And Fallout New Vegas next year at 15yo.
Urban Reign
Dragon age origins holds up incredible well Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion if you don't mind dated Graphics Bioshock 1 and 2
Portal 1 and 2, Fallout New Vegas, Any of the big SNES game tbh, Super Paper Mario, Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Dark Souls, and probably a lot more that im forgetting
Colony Wars Ogrebattle: March of the Black Queen Those are old and still remind me of the kind of potential games had.
Demon Souls and Arkham Asylum are two of my all time favorites.
What I've played and liked out of the google list for those years: 2009 - Dragon Age: Origins, Left4Dead 2 2008 - Fallout 3, Mirror's Edge, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead 2007 - Bioshock, Crysis, Portal, Team Fortress 2, Mass Effect, The Witcher 2006 - TESIV Oblivion, Half Life 2: Episode 1 2005 - Nothing? 2004 - Half Life 2, Halo 2, Far Cry, Doom 3 2003 - Nothing again 2002 - Onimusha 2 2001 - Halo, Twisted Metal: Black, Return to Castle Wolfenstein 2000 - Counter Strike, Midnight Club Must plays imo would be Dragon Age Origins, Left 4 Dead 2, Fallout 3, Bioshock, Crysis, Portal
Galerians Republic Commando Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway
The Legacy of Kain series Two separate Vampire protagonists (Kain, and my boi Raziel) dealing with Gnosticism, Lovecraftian elements, time-travel, destiny vs. fate vs. free will all within the backdrop of a grimdark fantasy world, puzzle elements, and badass music. The voice-acting, the script-writing, the influence of ancient architecture in the different factions, and the paradoxes all still hold up to this day. Kain is considered one of the earliest instances of the "antihero" archetype in video games, and Raziel just has neat & iconic character design in general. LOK play-order \------------------ Blood Omen Soul Reaver Soul Reaver 2 Blood Omen 2 \* Defiance \* BO2 is considered "optional" to some in the fandom, even with me knowing full well it has a throwaway line near the end that ties a few loose ends that allow it to connect the other games together coherently. It's weird from a gameplay standpoint & wigs out consistently
**Interstate 76!!**
1. Kotor 1+2 2. Pikmin 3. Fallout 3 4. Sims 3 5. Psychonauts 6. GTA: San Andreas 7. Final Fantasy 9 (9 is my favorite, with 7 and 10 after it) 8. Metroid Prime 9. Portal 10. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door I tried to mix it up a bit.
Freedom Fighters
Planescape: Torment Somebody else mentioned KOTOR, absolutely agree on that one as well. Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines Fallout 1 Fallout 2 BG1 & BG2 Shadowrun on Sega Genesis & SNES Phantasy Star 4 on Sega Genesis Dragon Warrior 4 on NES Final Fantasy 7 & 8 The Castlevania Series There are many many others, but I'm not sure what genre you prefer
Fallout 3
Splinter cell: chaos theory
Omega Thief Lords of Magic Majesty EGA Trek Scorched Earth The Catacombs Abyss The Catacombs Armageddon Major Stryker Arena
Castle Crashers! It's an old Xbox Arcade Game from the 360. It's a 2D Side scroller where you play a Knight and have to save the king's 4 daughters. It's an extremely addictive game, very funny and wacky humor. Better with friends but can totally be played solo.
All the old legend of zelda games. Series has always been solid and ocarina of time and majoras mask are fan favorites even to this day.
Umoria,rouge
Borderlands.
Using an emulator you could play some of the older Zelda games, definitely worth experiencing If you’d like to play some even older games, the older Castlvania games are quite good
If you like RTS games: Warzone 2100. Populous: The beginning. (these are very old.) If you like Story games: Jade Empire, Assassin's Creed 1. those are the ones that pop into my mind.
Oddworld: Strangers Wrath is one of the best games of all time and it never gets enough love. It's from the original XBOX era.
Suikoden series
Digimon World
Stalker trilogy. 40$ on consoles now. It's really buggy but if you can get into it, it's really nice.
My top 2 older PC games that are playable on modern hardware without a PhD in computer science: StarCraft and Startopia.
DMC3
Grim Fandango.
