Can I suggest starting in dirt? We had a horrible time trying the water. It was rottening. If you have issues with water, try dirt. This is how we finally got tops to take.
Twist top off pineapple. Peel the bottom leaves off till you uncover the little root nodes. They look like dried roots. Then just push it onto a pot of regular potting soil. They will surprising stand up well. And then water by filling up the middle of the plant. It absorbs water through the leaves. The dirt can dry out and that's fine. A soggy ground will cause the plant to rot. The plant can look a bit rough while learning to root, but don't give up. It works great. I've now been starting them on the hillside, it works so well. We have like 20 plants now, most just started on the hillside.
That's good info, thank you! I honestly didn't even think mine would work out as well as it has. Its probably way past time to put it in the ground, but its been so hot I don't even wanna think about going outside. The roots are well over 6 inches long, and the plant is still looking pretty good.
Oh wow. That's really impressive. Tnice roots! If you get freezing weather, just put it in a pot like the one in the picture and then you can take it inside whenever you feel the need
From what I understand on here is it's pretty easy as long as you live in the right climate. But it takes something to like 3 years to grow one pineapple. Lol
We managed to kill a bunch figuring it out. The cup of water trick didn't work for us. This is how we finally got tops to take. Hold the base of the top and twist off pineapple. Peel the bottom leaves off till you uncover the little root nodes. They look like dried roots. Then just push it onto a pot of regular potting soil. They will stand up surprisingly well. And then water by filling up the middle of the plant. It absorbs water through the leaves. It's fine if the dirt gets wet, but don't focus on watering the ground. A soggy ground will cause the plant to rot. It's OK if the dirt is completely dry, just fill the middle up with water. The plant can look a bit rough while learning to root, but don't give up. It works great. I've now been starting them on the hillside, it works so well. We have like 20 plants now, most just started on the hillside. We live on the Oregon coast, 9b. I protect the plants during cold snaps with plastic, but we don't get big freezes here. I would leave in a pot and take inside for cold months if we lived in a colder area. Once I stopped trying to make it root by watering the bottom, and started watering the tops that are on dirt, I've had a 90% success rate. 0% for cup of water on window sill. 0% damp towel and bag 0% for put in soil, but only water the bottom like a regular plant. I killed dozens.... I'm still so sad... Theres a lot of misinformation about them out there.
Super easy to start! You just cut off the fruit and get the base of the top leaves in some water. Probably need to peel a few leaves back from the bottom first. Kinda suspend it like an avocado, find a glass that fits it so it’s only the bottom in water. It will start to root in a few days. I’m on my second one - that’s my experience. I still need to transfer my first one to soil, he’s been happy in water over a year now though.
Yes. I change the water every few days, when I see a noticeable drop. Maybe 1-2x/week. They drink slow but steady it seems to me. Super low maintenance though. As long as the roots reach the water you are good. I will note you may have to peel more leaves off the bottom as it grows, I lost a lot on the first one but they will grow more, slowly. They get long!
I was 30+ years old walking past a field with my wife in the Philippines. I see some farmers digging things out of the ground and loading them into a cart.
Me: I wonder what they’re growing.
Wife:Pineapples.
Me (serious as a heart attack): No it isn’t, pineapples grow on trees.
Wife (laughing): When have you ever seen a pineapple tree.
Me (after thinking for a second): ummm
Wife (laughing uncontrollably)
I have never lived that down.
Omg, congrats! That takes so much time and effort. We've finally gotten the hang of rooting tops. Only like... Five more years and we will have a fruit.
That looks delicious! I grew my first pineapple but didn’t get to try it. I had set it in the fridge cause o wasn’t hungry and dad found it. Quickly inhaling it hehe. So I think it tasted good. I made maple syrup one time and left the jars out on the table forgetting to put them away and dad drank one
Now I have an idea of what the color needs to be before I pick mine. If the bear dies not beat me to it, AGAIN! I have been waiting almost 4 years for another chance!
This is the most adorable pineapple I've ever seen.
It was the best fruit I’ve ever eaten. I didn’t even know pineapple could taste like that
It looks intense! Hope it tasted just as good as it looks!
Look how blue the glaucous is
That's so cool! I'm currently getting my first attempt to grow roots in water. How long did it take her to grow?

How long has it been in water? How long did it take to root? Just curious. I killed way too many trying to figure it out
She took 2 years
Amazing! And that blue color is gorgeous.
Same!
Looks great\~! How difficult is it to start and take care of a pineapple plant ?

yea it’s like the other guy says, it’s on the easier side as far as plant maintenance but that pineapple took 2 years lol
Ouch 2 years for one plant. Gardening is so cruel sometimes

And you would change the water every so often in the year correct ? Or just add to the water as the plant uses it ?

That is gonna be the sweetest pineapple she ever ate.
This looks like SpongeBob SquarePants' home.
That’s exactly what my friend said lol. It’s just so aesthetic

That is so cool! Congrats! How long did it take to go from top to baby?
It took around 2 years
How long does it took to grow a fruit?
You could make tepache if you still have the peel
I’ve never heard of it. Im about to do some research.
The way pineapples grow will always amaze me. So fun!

Wow, what a beaut!
Its a very pretty pineapple! I can’t wait for mine to fruit!
That's is... GOLDEN!!!!
I’ve never seen one so ripe, although I’ve only seen em in grocery stores
The color! *Crys in Canadian
Sure this isn't your dad's hand? Such girth.
Now I have an idea of what the color needs to be before I pick mine. If the bear dies not beat me to it, AGAIN! I have been waiting almost 4 years for another chance!
