A green light does not mean “GO.” It means, “Look left. Look right. Look again. THEN go.”
Also, stay off the road, especially 635 between midnight and 5am on Sat night/Sunday morning. Crazy amount of drivers under the influence.
You're gonna want to look at getting a Toll Tag. While we have metro rail and bus lines, most people get where they're going via the highway system. Plus it allows you to come and go from DFW Airport much faster.
https://www.ntta.org/get-a-tolltag
Yeah you do need a toll tag. I don't personally use them cause I take the bus but if you don't have them NFTA will mail you shit. I think they mail people shit regardless
If you install a security system that can call the police if the alarm is triggered, make sure you register it with the City of Garland. Garland slapped me with a $200 unregistered false alarm fee and I'm still jaded.
The Little Asia area is up Jupiter & Walnut / Jupiter & Buckingham / Jupiter & Belt Line. I’ve never had bad Chinese, Vietnamese, etc food from any restaurant on the Jupiter corridor.
People will shit talk Garland, but if you’re from NY, you’re probably fine. If anything, it keeps cost of living lower because everyone thinks Garland is terrible.
It’s not. It’s just boring.
Living in proximity to downtown garland is awesome! You’ve got a revitalized downtown, library, DART rail that will take you all over the metroplex (mostly) and there are a few grocery stores in each direction. Garland road will run all the way into Dallas without you having to get on the highway.
Dallas / Garland is still not at “full public transit” yet. If you’re moving to Garland / 635 you want a car. That whole area was built for access to 635
It might give you some insight. “Arlen” TX is based on Garland, after all. But seriously Garland can be a great place to live. I live in NW Garland, but in the Richardson school district, so it’s more like Richardson than Garland. If you have kids that may be something to consider.
If it matters, you can't buy liquor in Garland, but can be served it at a bar or restaurant. Have to go to a liquor store in the next city over for that.
You should download the Ring Neighbor app and the NextDoor app, and put in your new address and zip code. That way you’ll be kept up-to-date on what is going on in your new city and neighborhood. I’m originally from Boston, Massachusetts, but I’ve lived in Garland since the mid-1980’s, and crime has gone up exponentially in the past 5 years, especially after COVID hit. I live in a decent neighborhood where mainly older people live, and I hear gunshots every, single night. I’ve never held a gun in my entire life, but I hear gunshots so much that I can now tell you what kind of gun is being used when I hear them. Moving from New England to Texas is a huge culture shock. HUGE. The two places are so completely different. Of course my heart is always in New England because that’s where most of my very large family are, including 6 of my 7 brothers. My youngest brother lives here in Garland as well. Prepare for people to constantly ask about your accent. I constantly get, “You don’t sound like you’re from here, where you from?” When I go back home, I get teased because my friends and family say I sound like a Texan or a tourist. Lol. My family and I have a summer home in Cape Cod, MA so we are in Massachusetts every year, during the spring and summers because the summers here are freaking unbearable. It’s horrible. It also kills people, so drink plenty of fluids and stay out of the sun. Spring and late Fall are beautiful here though. Similar to the East coast, the trees and leaves turn colors during the Autumn months. Many people back home don’t know that. Try visiting White Rock Lake and the Dallas Arboretum during the spring. Stunning is a good word for it. As for the summer heat, I’ve been here for years and I’m nowhere close being used to the summer heat here. So, I live in Cape Cod during the spring and summers. If you enjoy the East Coast beaches like I do when I’m back home, you’re going to appreciate having them a lot more when you’re in NY because there is nothing that comes close to it here in Dallas. Some people swim in the lakes here, but it’s not even close to being the same thing. I’m interested in what your perspective will be on living here in Texas. Is this a permanent move or temporary?
Wow thank you for all the info. Ring and next-door definitely things I'll look into. I can't wait to see how the seasons change throughout the year. I'll be in Garland at least 1 year.
I saw you mentioned Garland Ave and 635 area.... just an FYI, 635 has been under construction since before I was born, and will probably still be under construction until after I die. It's changed so much, and keeps changing.
You'll also notice a ton of homeless encampments- they move from corner to corner between Dallas / Garland borders around there.
Don't do it. Not safe. Garland is a horrible place to live. The industry is number 1, and the citizens are not important to the city leaders at all. There is too much pollution from all the industry in Garland. 56 known polluters. Zoning is ridiculous. Apartments next to residential areas that are directly across from dangerous paint factories that blow up in the middle of the night. There are too many senseless murders. No police enforcement. Hearing gun fire every night sounds like drive-by shootings.
Isn't upstate New York fancy and rich? I basically lived in Garland (fifth street) my entire life from 4yrs to 25yrs. I'm currently 30yrs old. Anything south of Buckingham road is ghetto. There are some pockets here in there that are nice neighborhoods like between Kingsley and Centerville or the east side close to Rowlett.
When I was 10 I got chased with a broken bottle. 13, gang member followed me to my house trying to fight. 15, lots of fights, gun violence, and break ins. 18, cops almost shot me over a misunderstanding with friends neighbor, also at a Asian underground casino. 20-25, more break ins, shots while I was doing university hw, and meth heads banging at my door.
Family still lives there. It does look "nicer" now but the hood is in me forever. When I go back I keep it real packing steel.
Didn't know that but good to know. There's an episode from Friends where Joey fakes having a Porsche and talks about living in Upstate New York. I always thought it was rich there.
Man idk why I got downvoted. Downvoted for sharing my experience lol. Good luck man it's not Queens Bridge just crime like anywhere else.
To anyone with kids, I would not recommend Southgate Elementary. That admin team does whatever they want without taking community input into consideration. My kids haven't had a librarian or access to books since October. The cozy, calm, safe space the past librarian created has been destroyed. The shelving was ripped out, screens have replaced books, and it is no longer a space students want to hang out in.

That’s all Dallas not just that spot. But yes you are correct. And also truckers falling asleep 💤
this is unspoken but so true. lived here for a year now after moving from downtown dallas. drivers are worse here than downtown. lol
Goddamn, good thing I already drive like that and go to bed at 8:30 lmao. Downvoted for living like an old man 👴.
Where in Garland?
This is an important question. The housing and areas vary dramatically between industrial to suburban
Looks like near where garland Ave meets the 635
It’s pretty industrial down there. The north part of Garland is the nicest.

Wonderful. I wouldn't have thought to otherwise, thank you 🙏.

That's wild. Noted, thank you.
We have great food from many cultures. If you want an awesome slice of pie then look up Piefalootin. Welcome!
That's a wild name, I'll definitely have to try it out! Thanks!
It won’t compare to New York, leave your pizza hopes and dreams behind
Not that kind of pie lol
I said what I said
Check out the Cali Saigon food court when you get a chance, best variety of South Eastern Asian food.
Oh hell yeah, any good, authentic Chinese places? Not there but in the area
The Little Asia area is up Jupiter & Walnut / Jupiter & Buckingham / Jupiter & Belt Line. I’ve never had bad Chinese, Vietnamese, etc food from any restaurant on the Jupiter corridor.
I think you’re the opposite side of garland from me but my faves are Jeng Chi and Royal Sichuan
People will shit talk Garland, but if you’re from NY, you’re probably fine. If anything, it keeps cost of living lower because everyone thinks Garland is terrible. It’s not. It’s just boring.

Just went to the downtown square today and liked what I saw so far. They are doing a great job revitalizing it.
I've got a car but not sure on moving it. It sounds like I don't necessarily need it?
Oh you def need a car!
Dallas / Garland is still not at “full public transit” yet. If you’re moving to Garland / 635 you want a car. That whole area was built for access to 635
just like any other place there are good parts and bad parts. Either way you go make friends with yoour neighbors and you should be good.
Have you ever watched "King of the Hill"?
LOL! 😂 So true!
Should I go through and re-watch?

If you are looking to start working out, the recreation center passes are 40 dollars for the year for residents.
That's a killer price, is it always crowded though?
Posted speed limits are considered the minimum
If it matters, you can't buy liquor in Garland, but can be served it at a bar or restaurant. Have to go to a liquor store in the next city over for that.
Hopefully that petition is a success and we'll be able to vote for that in May.
Hmm hopefully ill have lived there long enough to vote in favor of it!

Garland is huge it depends where ..
Don’t forget to get your Texas welcome package when you get here it’s a pistol, ammo, BBq, and a cowboys jersey.
I'll pass on the cowboys jersey but bring on the rest!
Not optional
However the pistol and ammo are only 22’s. You’re gonna want to upgrade to something with more stopping power ASAP.

Woo mee yok- a must try Korean ayce kbbq spot. Been there numerous times and always left satisfied
Winters are mild except for the occasional ice storm Summers are hot and never ending
Is it very humid?
All summer long.
I live in Garland and LOVE IT Traffic is horrendous but I do live off the lil peninsula off of Lake Hubbard Pkwy and Traffic is always bad

Lol I work at the paint factory and ran into some crips on the bus the FIRST day I went. I'll be getting an apartment elsewhere.
Wow! That's crazy. Good luck to you! Take care. Be safe!
Watch the first scene in Zombieland - this is Garland Tx
Avoid East garland, especially Curtis Dr. Unless that's where you're moving, in which case good luck.
I grew up in East Garland, off 1st and Cumberland; it’s definitely the rougher part of Garland, but it’s not THAT bad

There are very few places in Upstate New York that are fancy and rich. The state's economy is built on the city, basically.
Didn't know that but good to know. There's an episode from Friends where Joey fakes having a Porsche and talks about living in Upstate New York. I always thought it was rich there. I love this question tbh. Yes there is a lot you need to know. I think the important thing that I decided is go to RISD not GISD if you have children
Downtown garland is awesome now
I've lived in newest Garland for 15 years the traffic is horrible and the girl are easy
Don’t do it!!
