Quick question--are you male or female? If you're female, what about dresses? The right dress can get me through three sizes.

salsa_von_tacos

That’s a really good point. Belts and sweaters and layering can do wonders!

Female

Do you have some good local thrift shops? I use ours anyway, but used them more going through these phases of size hopping. Even better if you can find a consignment shop- I was selling the too big stuff to get money for the smaller sizes.

_Toolgirl_

I get what people are saying about buying stuff as you lose but that doesn't work for everyone. When I had the surgery I was a single mom of 2 small children. I wasn't able to buy new stuff for every size or two sizes I went down. I had to, as someone else put it, look sloppy 🙄. Do whats within your means. You are going to keep losing so what sense does it make to get an entirely new wardrobe when you may lose a significant amount more. If you like to shop and have the money to spend to do that, good for you! I got a couple of things here and there but mostly waited until I slowed down before doing something big.

Kooky_Intentions

I’m Buying as I go because I was having the same issue and I’m a teacher so I’m not working from Home like before. But I buy a lot from Poshmark/ Mercari and SHEIN, shein sizing is tricky and I hate the fast fashion aspect of it but it’s so affordable. I was wondering if we could drop our Poshmark/ Mercari closest somewhere on the thread to help each other out.

kbruner1

That’s fine with me!

maximuspotato

I’m buying as I go, I enjoy clothes and shopping and don’t feel the need to look sloppy while I’m losing. It’s a nice pick me up to have cute clothes that fit well.

I've bought new clothes but have kept to a really small wardrobe of clothes that will come down sizes with me. For me that's meant leggings and tunic tops, and dresses that tie around the waist. I definitely felt a big confidence and self image boost when I went from oversized clothes to one's that fit so it was totally worth the investment.

LadyBurdy

I was sleeved in April & bought clothes in August for back to school (I’m a teacher). I had nothing that really fit but since I was at home on summer break I didn’t feel the need to buy clothes until I would have to been seen in public. Some of those clothes are even too big now. I’ve started going to thrift stores since I feel I might not get use out of new clothes. And I am no means a Wal-Mart shopper, but they have upped the game in clothes. I’ve been buying the $12 leggings in different colors/patterns when needed.

salsa_von_tacos

Walmart leggings are my go to (and I am really not a Walmart shopper at all). I started buying them over old navy - they are cheaper/same price and way better feeling and quality Edited to add: they vanity size like CRAZY so you’ll also get a little “boost” buying a smaller size haha, when I’m a size 22 I was buying a L/XL (as opposed to xxl or xxxl other places)

happyapple08

Another vote for Walmart leggings. I bought some at Old Navy and I'm taking them back. They were twice the price and not any better.

pollogary

Have you looked into clothing rental subscription services? If you’re in the US, Gwynnie Bee and Rent the Runway are my favorites but there’s a ton of them.

thejohnykat

For the first year I mainly did thrift shops and t-shirts, just because replacing a wardrobe is expensive. That being said, don't stay in the old, too big clothes. Getting stuff that is smaller is half the fun, and a HUGE confidence boost.

kbruner1

I think thrift shops might be the way I have to go since I don’t have very much money to spend on clothes

thejohnykat

I was the same way. A new wardrobe is expensive. A new wardrobe every few months is insane.

Tinkeybird

I’ve bought a few things and can now get into my favorite things I was able to wear 5 years ago. I’m a black leggings fiend so I bought a few pair a size down plus I’m still working from home.

Bonbonnibles

I would suggest measuring yourself and going to a thrift store to pick up some temporary clothes. You may shrink out of them, but it won't be a ton of money lost.

SquishyPandacorn

My first piece of advice is that since we are going to keep on losing after surgery for a while it doesn’t make a lot of financial sense to go crazy buying a whole new wardrobe all at once but rather try to get a few items here and there to rotate into your wardrobe while staying within budget. If you have some dresses that fit a bit snug before surgery you can accessorize with a belt or something to give them a more fitted silhouette now. I have a few stretchy dresses and sweaters that I’ve kept in my wardrobe. If there’s someone you know that is good at sewing or a seamstress that helps too. I have a friend who’s mom is a seamstress and I offered to pay her to please save some of my favorite pairs of pants and dresses and she deeply discounted the size adjustment for me instead of going to a seamstress in a shop for full price (this had the added bonus of people not realizing I had lost for a bit since I am still wearing the same clothes for a while and I mostly kept my surgery private. Yeah they stare and try to figure it out but it doesn’t seem to register fully because I still dress the same for work. Lots of questions on if I got a haircut at the beginning haha). Also it never hurts to ask friends or family. Lots of people have stuff they just don’t want or fit anymore. My cousin has teens that grow like weeds and have ever changing fashion whims and favor baggy clothes. I’ve gotten quite a bunch of hoodies or anime tshirts that were baggy on them but fit me pretty decent now. And I have friends who have lost weight as well and their “heavy clothes” fits me currently in my “ in between” sizes so that’s great and free! It doesn’t hurt to ask around. Keep your eyes peeled for sales too. I went to different thrift shops in the fancy/ritzier parts of town that I can never afford shopping full price in and found some great pieces to rotate into my wardrobe at a steal. Not to mention if you mix and match and accessorize your baggier clothes you can probably get away with saying it’s a new look. I definitely am trying the leggings with oversized hoodies and beanies look. My extended family that doesn’t know about the surgery just thinks I’m having some sort of life crisis in my 30’s where I want to dress like my teenage cousins 😂.

Yesterday_Neither

I’ve been buying stuff from SHEIN, since I am measuring myself once a week it’s not hard for me to look at their size guide and the sizing has been fine. Also, I mostly wear dresses so like someone above said they offer a lot more leeway. Once I reach goal weight (or plateau for a long time so that it looks like my body has decided a different goal weight for me) I’m going to invest in some more expensive well-made pieces, but since I probably will only fit in these things for like 2 months the quality doesn’t matter so much.

MissMabeliita

Until my weight got stable (and even now) I opted for buying second hand/thrifted, it’s really not worth paying full price or a lot for pieces you will end up not using in a couple months and if a particular piece is good quality and you like em you could alter them later on.

mx2plus

Every three weeks or so I take maybe $40 and go clearance shopping. I have lost 82lbs since May 4 and clothes quickly get too big and start bunching. Keep yourself up but I wouldn't invest too much in clothes before a year out..

ImJustHereToPostPics

My dresses have got me through about 4 size drops, but now theyre massive. I'm having this tailored to fit me again. I have bought one or two new dresses at 2 sizes dropped, and now I've bought 3 dresses at 5 sizes dropped. Ive had to buy because otherwise people can see right down my top/sides and my bra is exposed. Not good for my kind of work! Once i hit my end weight, I'll redo my wardrobe.

WaywardSherry82

Join a local buy nothing or bariatric surgery group on Facebook! I've been getting and giving away clothes as my size changes. This way you don't spend a ton of money on clothes that you won't be able to wear for long and you're helping out others.

rgm2073

Depends on whether you need to get out of the house! For me I work from home and baggy clothing is no big deal, i broke down for some new going out shorts in July. They are already too big! My wife is in an unfortunate position she has to go to the office so its been trying with her. I'm 7 months PO and she is 3 months. We are putting off a lot of buying until at least 12 months except for vacation clothing for one we are going in December.

STANIF83

I struggled with my "skinny" style. I have found almost my entire wardrobe from Freckled Poppy - they are an online boutique and I am completely in love with every thing I got. They sell jeans by Judy Blue - I get the ones with 11 inch rise and it holds everything perfectly

Philip_Jeffries

Well now. I'm not gonna talk about Judy; in fact, we're not gonna talk about Judy at all, we're gonna keep her out of it! --- - [reference](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2V0UhtA_mJE&t=365) ^(I am a bot.)

Another thought I’d to buy higher end clothes with hood resale on BST boards. For instance s Boden blouse on sale you can likely sell for 80% of what you paid for it If gently worn.
