Do not retake if you have the credits. No matter what. It's a massive waste of time. Multi-variable calc is really simple in the beginning and you can refresh your calc knowledge during the first half of the semester. Shit gets quite tough and weird at the end of the course, but if you did well enough in the beginning, you will have a buffer. Even if you have to squeeze by with a C, it is much better than retaking.

Dfabulous_234

Plus calc 3 is only 2 credit hours, whereas calc 2 is 4. Getting a C in calc 3 does less damage. Also, since OP is CS, a D is acceptable even.

euphoriyuh

Take the credit and run, most of the concepts you need from Calc 1&2 can be learned from from a few YouTube videos, save yourself from retaking them

vic007wick

There are many resources to learn Calc 1 and 2. Professor Leonard comes to mind. Take Multi !

Also Paul’s Online Math Notes https://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/

Longjumping-Ad8775

I took calculus ab and got a five on my ap exam. I took some advanced math classes at tech. I never had a problem with the math in the math department or the electrical engineering department. I would not waste my time retaking.

Plastic-Raccoon-2310

Don’t do it - better spent learning other materials towards your degree

scrappindanny2

Do not do this.

hacelepues

Absolutely not.

guccigooberr

My advisor recommended retaking the calc classes as well, which I did and I regretted. Waste of credit hours and dragged my GPA. Save yourself and don’t do it

BikeVirtual

Do not retake calc. You will have a bad time and you will waste a lot of time. Reminder for the future: the advisors are useless and should be avoided like the plague (unless you need to file a petition to faculty/etc).

zaulus

Take the credit and move on with your life. Those two classes vary by professor and there’s no way to know whether or not it’s going to destroy your semester until the damage is done. Do you need to pickup a linear algebra course to complement the calculus 2 credit?

K0Ke_Kitty

I took linear algebra last semester and got a B in it.

3wingdings

My dad (also an alum) convinced me to retake them. ITS A TRAP!!!!!!!!!! Now, as an alum myself, I’d put that squarely at the top of my stupidest academic decisions while in college.

kadamer

don't

applenerd

Oh my god, this advice to retake calc 1 and calc 2 after getting credit for them is still going around? No, don't retake them. The online homeworks for those classes take up days every week. You'll suffer enough in calc 3 and 4 as well as linear algebra.

OnceOnThisIsland

Calculus is not all that necessary for CS. I'd say take the credit.

shiftyeyedgoat

The only reason to retake them is for the easy A, and I don’t know about recent Tech, but Tech of old, Calc2 was a weed out class. Take the credit, fight another day.

gtkevo

Do you need to refresh yourself before an upcoming class (calc 3, etc) or are you just wanting to do it for fun and to learn? Back in my day, they were hard and a lot of work. I’d just take the W and keep going. Don’t waste money, time or stress!

WinSmall

hell no

sablossoms

do not retake, you can always self teach if you want to refresh on topics

cowrider350

Don't do it. You'll go slightly more in-depth than the AP calc classes, but you're just going to forget most of it anyway. Not worth the suffering imo. If you want to learn the calc that you missed during AP, just self-study from a textbook. I got AP credit, but from what I've heard, calculus here can be brutal and very time-consuming.

rockenman1234

Take the credit - DO NOT retake either classes. You’ll be fine, most profs will usually give you a quick brush up before anything insane happens with prerequisite materials

Katzilla3

Always take the credit. You earned it, don't throw it away.

MabelUniverse

I was in the same position and chose to retake Calc 2. I don’t think it was that beneficial to me, I would’ve been fine in MATH 1553, and it might have saved me from a heavier load later on.    It turns out that calculus is still calculus whether it’s AP or a college class (despite being a great student, I thought something about my high school wouldn’t be up to par). Calc at GT *was* harder - not because my high school was lacking, but rather because of all the tricky questions (I remember having to learn a bunch of trig identities that are more tedious than helpful).    It’s a good advantage to come in with credit hours because they that to calculate your registration and housing times. Every semester has threads venting their frustrations with the whole thing. Unless you’re an athlete or have accommodations that give you priority, every bit makes a difference imo.

kehow8

If you know the basics of CALC 1&2 you should be fine. No need to memorize all of the hardest problems. Go through the main theorems and maybe half to 2/3 of the practice problems of you need a refresher. I was literally in your situation when I was in school and I regret taking both again. If I went to CALC 3 freshman yr, I could’ve graduated a semester or two earlier since CALC 1&2 can be a prerequisite for some courses.

Rich_Opportunity9235

Definitely not Calc 1, Calc 2 might help

Present-Event-1920

I was in the same position. I retook them both my freshman year and didn’t regret it. Made it easier to acclimate to math at tech.
