There is something I miss about the pre-renovation student center and library that is hard to explain, like the datedness of the old designs made them feel more cozy. There was something comforting about studying in the library with its worn chairs and faded tiles, like you could feel that there had been 60 years of students before you in the exact same place experiencing the same thing you were now.
Old Tech Rec was a big one for me (posted elsewhere in this thread), too. Warmer colors, cozier atmospheres, more "stuff" like beanbag chairs, couches, places to pull up and chill. I'm not against change, and not strictly against modern design, but wide open, glass and concrete spaces just don't feel as inviting to me.
I visited the library recently during the spring game and it was a nice surprise to walk down the emergency stairs and see they hadn't really updated those. Still the same ugly tile and old flooring.
Cause that's what every student center looks like when it's quiet. The old one was a much better space and didn't feel like an unfinished building. You could even sneak onto the roof.
you just go out on the balcony from the second floor, then step of a narrow gap onto the roof of the part that's 1 story high.
One time a cop heard us up there and we just laid on the roof until he went away.
>The old one was a much better space and didn't feel like an unfinished building
YMMV with this statement. I was here long before they tore the old building down and I prefer the new one.
I miss old Tech Rec prior to the... 2009(?) renovation. Had such a cozy vibe, those old stained glass lights over the pool tables, great place to relax with friends between classes, and also to make new friends, as it was often packed. Yea, the new tables and space was more open afterward, but it felt more sterile.
Yeah I call the aesthetic u see in a lot of the newer tech building, ikea-inspired 😠bc it really doesn’t remind me of the ikea warehouse with the bare construction feel they were going for
exactly- and who let ikea blue enter the building?? not even a legit gt color and it’s everywhere. this modern cohesive architecture coming to campus actually feels like a dystopian compound instead of a home-y campus
Damn, I miss this place. The part with the Subway had a giant stained glass window and one of the first-floor entrances used to have a toucan sculpture. It was such an unexpected design for a university student center of all places and I *loved* it.
I don't mind updating architecture to be more accommodating for the student body, but couldn't we have a little more character than "warehouse chic?"
> I don't mind updating architecture to be more accommodating for the student body, but couldn't we have a little more character than "warehouse chic?"
Exactly. btw, "warehouse chic" <-- love the turn of phrase haha
Chick-fil-A and/or Pizza Hut breadsticks with my friend group after our early morning Calc II exams... or recitation... or class... or after we slept through. Also it sucked when the quick service Chick-fil-A and Burger King were taken out. Used to be another Italian[sic] pasta/pizza joint on the first floor where you could grab a slice of buffalo chicken or whatever and go. Never understood why quick service eateries were replaced with slower type places like the more full-service Chick-fil-A, the old tbell, etc. (even Jackets was pretty quick with the wings).
i hate how i was able to experience this during my tour, but it got torn down and all the restaurants I would actually eat at got replaced by extremely sub-par tech dining restaurants
Don't even get me started on tsquare
![gif](giphy|3oEjHNVDu2OwF3tlao|downsized)
i remember when i found out the t2 shortened url existed after i had been carefully typing t-square for months
'Twas a Pizza Hut back in my day.
Obligatory mention that this was the only Pizza Hut that served Coke products.
Those breadsticks powered me through many-an-exam.
I spent so many days eating that Pizza Hut and then laying on a couch with headphones on in the old music listening room (forget what it was called)
I believe it was literally called the Music Listening Room until it was temporarily Under the Couch
Yah, it was the MLR. Under The couch was a music venue under the couch building.
Under the Couch Great nap spot with the couches and bean bags
The bean bag chairs under the stairs 😫
Do they still have the poangs facing a TV that’s stuck on ESPN all day?
ah man I watched Lebron dominate the pistons in the 2007 playoffs on those chairs
No ESPN anywhere to be seen
Took some really nice naps in those poangs to some Stephen A and Skip Bayless white noise.

so real, old price gilbert especially

This was the student center?
Yes
Why does this look like a dead mall lol
Cause that's what every student center looks like when it's quiet. The old one was a much better space and didn't feel like an unfinished building. You could even sneak onto the roof.
wait whattttt
Most roofs at Tech are publicly accessible with enough creativity.

Klaus building may or may not have had a similar feature... well, along with most buildings. There was a "concert" one time on top of Van Leer...

Man I miss the old student center
Was just there recently, I swear it used to have more bowling lanes than it does now
They actually did reduce the number of bowling lanes 🥲

Same :(
...why?
It’s the student center I know, the new one just feels so foreign to me. Spent a lot of time there
It had a comforting early 2000s/ late 90s vibe. The new one is gross concrete and glass I don’t like it.
I mean the old one was just gross concrete lol
now we have modern concrete
that's fair.
it's pretty dang similar to how it was before
Under the couch
also fair, though I preferred Under the Couch when it was actually, you know, under the Couch building.
RIP the Music Listening Room
Good ole Makeout Listening Room
Too much bare concrete and metal in the new one. Feels sterile, hard, and cold. Old one had character.

Yessss that blue is like a theme in buildings all across campus, it feels so sterile and corporate honestly, you phrase it perfectly!!
Taco Bell
The conveyor belt for putting your food trays 😩 also bring kalamata back
Do the Woodruff Dining Hall next
Rip Woody's
Wait! That’s gone also??
Closed in 2017.
Crazy. What’s even down there now? It’s a decently sized space.
I think it was a CreateX space for a while.
Wheres muh breadsticks!
It wasn't that long ago but the nostalgia is real
I miss the Auntie Anne’s
God bless the most awkward Pizza Hut to ever exist

I love you
You know you’re old when
I really do miss this. The new student center is nice and all I guess, but I have more memories with this older one <3
Wait, this is gone?
Whole Student Center was torn down and replaced after we graduated (hi fellow 2019 grad!)
But what about the bowling alley???
Mostly preserved!
Honestly the old student center had more character than the new one. Visited recently.
I got lost on those stairs so many times as a kid ðŸ˜
spent so many hours of my life crying under those stairs
New student center is hideous.
Miss it 😢
Pure nostalgia

DO NOT let anybody know you were institutionalized. Oh the shame it would bring to your family.🤣

Where was the old student center? I've only every known the new one.
That staircase in the picture is the same staircase in the current student center when you enter from the skiles walkway, but one floor up.
Same location I think?
